Blue Posted May 29, 2015 Share #1 Posted May 29, 2015 If this was already shown elsewhere, I apologize. I did a quick browsing of the latest Headlines thread and couldn't find them. Anywho, here's some pictures from 5/22's Blog Entry. (Looks like all courtesans RPers willl have fun with this dress) Personally, I am particularly excited about the first one on the right (the Old London type of coat). I hope BLM can wear it, it'd make for Jet'a's new look in Ishgard. 1 Link to comment
Gegenji Posted May 29, 2015 Share #2 Posted May 29, 2015 I have to agree on that top right one, it caught my eye first and foremost (followed by dancing Lala). There's a lot of interesting armor designs, sure, but I'm hoping that there will be a nice collection of All Class gear to make some more... I dunno, "mundane" outfits? Stuff you'd likely wear around town and not look like you about to go fight some terrible evil at the drop of a hat. Link to comment

I'm looking forward to town gear, of the type that lets you blend in and not catch the eye with extravagant details, like that coat. Let us hope for more town gear prizes on the Gold Saucer! In particular, I'd like this piece for my female Miqo'te: Link to comment

Ciel Posted May 29, 2015 Share #7 Posted May 29, 2015 It's not just coutesans. I've been wanting a bellydancer-like outfit as someone who plays a traveling performer. I'm not sure why the automatic assumptions seems to be SEX RP. Link to comment
Brynhilde Posted May 29, 2015 Share #8 Posted May 29, 2015 I love the MNK one (damn that is a badass Highlander bro mm) and the final heavy-ish armour set with the skirt. Link to comment

I actually wondered if that was a MNK look or not, it's one of the few outfits I've seen of the new stuff that I could picture Zarek wearing IC-ly. Link to comment

Blue Posted May 29, 2015 Author Share #11 Posted May 29, 2015 It's not just coutesans. I've been wanting a bellydancer-like outfit as someone who plays a traveling performer. I'm not sure why the automatic assumptions seems to be SEX RP. The design is clearly intended to appeal the sexual drive (the cut on the leg, the laces around the legs, among other things). If you have seen some movies, you will see that is reflects the typical attire of concubines in the arabian/turkish/egyptian ancient times. They both delved into bellydancing and courting. Going around the streets in that attire was considered indecent (it still is, in those countries), and as such attributed to traders of sex (which again did include bellydancing. most of bellydancers ended the day with their customers in bed). I'm not sure why the negative reaction to that, however. Huh.. who uses a Naginata? I love Naginatas :-X I do agree it looks similar to a Naginata, but the posture of that model induces to me think that's a great sword, so... DRK, I guess. Link to comment

Aaron Posted May 29, 2015 Share #15 Posted May 29, 2015 Why can we never get a cloak or something with the hood /on/ or at least a visor option. The generic robes with the hood on now just don't cut it for me. Link to comment

We need more polearms to choose from! A naginata would be nice, as would a lucerne hammer. I really like the poleaxe shown in the images above, though. Link to comment

I'm not sure why the automatic assumptions seems to be SEX RP. I'm not sure why the negative reaction to that, however. Because the insinuation seems to be courtesans and ERPers will be the ones the set will appeal to. While that might be partly true some of us just want it because it looks nice. It's kind of offensive to think anyone who wants it is just out to get laid. Maybe that wasn't your intent but that was how it came across to me. Link to comment

It's kind of offensive to think anyone who wants it is just out to get laid. Maybe that wasn't your intent but that was how it came across to me. You're reading too much into it. The first thing that came to mind was courtesans. And if the OP thought that first thing, they're not going to be alone, for very obvious reasons. That's not insinuating that ONLY courtesan RPers are the ones interested in that outfit, just that it is the strongest association people will make with those kinds of outfits. Unfortunately, this is not something you can control. It's the result of repeated reinforcement from all kinds of media using that attire for that particular kind of appeal (and the design itself, frankly, being really obvious in its design intent in the first place). You really shouldn't be bothered by this. Neither courtesans nor ERPers nor anyone associated should be considered 'lesser beings' or looked down upon, so this should not be an offensive inference to make. Furthermore, you should have enough self-awareness to know how you're coming across given how you dress your character (or, ICly, how they dress themselves), unless, of course, a lack of self-awareness is a part of the character. You can be annoyed that people aren't making the associations you think they should be making, but you have about as much control over that as you do anyone else's thought patterns. The most you can do is correct people when they make incorrect assumptions based on your state of dress. And if you're wearing an outfit with that strong an association with that particular trade, you're going to be doing a lot of correcting, sorry to say. 1 Link to comment
Martiallais Posted May 29, 2015 Share #22 Posted May 29, 2015 But while that might be the OPs first thought, it's not everyone's first thought or even intended manner of use. It could be a case of 'post history' (I mean look at poster titles) coming into play but I read it as being annoyed that while none of the other pictures had any sort of label or dialogue added to them, the OP specifically said COURTESAN RP for those outfits alone. I believe in the other thread where these were shown there was talk of Blue Mage and jokes referencing Aladdin made as well. Link to comment
Zyrusticae Posted May 29, 2015 Share #23 Posted May 29, 2015 Of course it wasn't everyone's first thought. We're not a hive mind. But, I mean... an outfit that bares legs, midriff, and shoulders is always going to get comments to that effect. And the artist's intent is actually largely irrelevant to this (though, again, I would argue that the intent is really bloody obvious). None of the other new outfits present the character as sexually available the way that one does. This should be a surprise to no one. If anything, you should be glad that this is the first instance on the site where someone pointed out that (really obvious) association. I was certainly thinking it when I saw it. I just knew better than to point it out, lest this exact conversation begin to play out. Really, I just find the objections to the comment to be quite silly at this point. If I put on the coliseum galerus I know exactly what kinds of comments I'll be getting. I'm not going to get in a huff and be offended by it. I'll accept what I get and move on. It's only when people are outright disrespectful that there is an issue, and quite frankly, what seems to be more the problem here to me is simply a lack of respect for what the courtesan profession stands for. If it weren't for the objections to that little comment my thoughts would simply begin and end with "yeah, I bet it will be" and nothing more. Now I'm just wondering how many people wear bikinis ICly outside of Costa Del Sol and are mystified by the propositions they receive. Now that's a curious thought... Link to comment

I think the OP assumed that from the live letter thread where someone (couple people actually) said the outfit was courtesan like. I'm unsure though. I don't see the problem though honestly. If you want to dress in that go ahead lol. Link to comment
Ruran Posted May 29, 2015 Share #25 Posted May 29, 2015 Let's not read too much into one passing sentence of the OP's post, yeah? (Even though admittedly, they could have phrased it better.) This thread is about how awesome these new armor sets look, and they all really do look fantastic. I love the ones on the third row, I've been hoping for some more barbaric/brawler-looking armor, with a lot of fur and trappings, yessss. +_+ I'm pleased to see FFXIV's overall style moving toward a more gothic theme.
