Ari Kagon Posted June 30, 2015 Share #1 Posted June 30, 2015 While we are generally a pretty kind community, I'm sure once in a while we run into certain people who do things that just grates on our nerves. I've been RPing for a while over a few different games and have developed OOC pet peeves about things people do ICly. What are yours? (Note: This thread is not meant to offend and may even provide tips for RP etiquette with certain people, on that notion please be civil.) My pet peeves: -People who emote what would be an internal monologue. I shouldn't be able to read your mind unless I have some aforementioned ability to do so...which I don't. -Taking major actions against another character ICly without their permission. Mostly refers to injury of another persons character. Please ask me first if I'm cool with you stabbing me ICly and I will return the courtesy when I ask to bump into you and snatch something from your pockets. -RPing my character into RP purgatory. Usually has to do with kidnapping or things of that sort. No one likes being in a position where they aren't able to do things for long periods of time. I can't think of anymore at this moment, so now it's your turn!:frustrated: 1 Link to comment
Manari Posted June 30, 2015 Share #2 Posted June 30, 2015 When people metagame, even unintentionally, by calling me by the surname displayed in-game. My character's displayed name is an alias, or more accurately, a name she uses that non-Miqo'te can easily pronounce. Long ago when she lost her tribe, she discovered that non-Miqo'te could not properly say her birthname, and she got tired of the aggravating attempts, so she decided to just tell everyone her name was Manari, because everyone can say that. She never ever has told anyone her surname is Onai, because it isn't. It's her tribe's name, and the game needed me to enter a last name to make the character. So I always cringe every time someone calls her "Miss Onai" or something similar. 1 Link to comment
Flickering Ember Posted June 30, 2015 Share #3 Posted June 30, 2015 My RP pet peeve: -When people make a big deal out of RP pet peeves to the point where the roleplayer sounds like a stick in the mud. They then have trouble accepting RP or having fun in RP because they can't look past their pet peeves. Or they stop RPing with someone over a pet peeve that really isn't and shouldn't be a big deal. TL;DR RP induced meta negativity -My RP pet peeve is 'RP pet peeves' 6 Link to comment
Tumensuns Posted June 30, 2015 Share #4 Posted June 30, 2015 I try to stay true to the lore, and so it makes me fairly nit-picky, but I try to stay relaxed with it, but there are some I just have trouble overlooking. One major being an added accent that doesn't make sense for the universe the character is apart of. Saying you've grown up in Limsa all your life, but you have a big thick german accent, doesn't make sense. Link to comment
Nebbs Posted June 30, 2015 Share #5 Posted June 30, 2015 Nothing specific, or rather everything.. but it only becomes an issue if the RP is not really engaging. Sooooo... Make the RP interesting and engaging and I will put up and go along with most things. [edit] And keep IC and OOC separate.. in fact I would happily never go OOC. Link to comment

One major being an added accent that doesn't make sense for the universe the character is apart of. Saying you've grown up in Limsa all your life, but you have a big thick german accent, doesn't make sense. Hah, this. That being said, appropriate accents can be really immersive. Similarly, my other pet peeve is excessive stuttering or "thick" accents that are just utterly illegible. Furthering on the notion of breaking immersion, it kinda makes me shake my head to need to lean forward and squint at my chat trying to decipher strange languages consisting of about 50% apostrophes or hyphens :B Link to comment

Lilia Lia Posted June 30, 2015 Share #9 Posted June 30, 2015 This is going to be a long thread. I guess a recent pet peeve of mine is the whole "if you don't like it, don't RP with me" attitude. Show a little respect for your community. If something you're saying or doing is bothering people, consider simply not doing it. A healthy community is one that freely exchanges criticism and feedback. RP is a social activity so it's ultimately not something that you just do for yourself. People who emote what would be an internal monologue. I shouldn't be able to read your mind unless I have some aforementioned ability to do so...which I don't. This actually doesn't bother me as much as it seems to bother everyone else. I know better than to behave as though I'm mind-reading, and I can use it to sort of understand the character's facial expression or body language. It can also give me the feeling of our interaction forming a bit of a story where I can look back on it and know what happened more clearly. I don't do it myself though. 1 Link to comment
Altitis Acquired Posted June 30, 2015 Share #10 Posted June 30, 2015 - Mary/Gary Sues... People whose characters are "perfect", "flawless" and can do no wrong, who believes he/she is always right and everyone who disagrees with them are wrong. Essentially godmoders, who dodges ever attack and who forces his own emotes on others, for example. - People who use IC as an excuse to harass people. There are indeed people who have OOC problems with others and take it to IC, hiding behind the whole "it's my character, not me, can't you tell the difference between IC and OOC?" excuse. You should always be able to back out of RP you don't agree with, so when asking someone to please stop harassing you, they should respect that and stop. And the people I talk about are those who don't stop, but then continues the harassment, even doing so OOCly. I've encountered my fair share of these people, but luckily not so many in FFXIV, so that is indeed a positive point. ^^ - Trolling lollers who jump around and stand on tables in the inn when people are trying to RP, with the intention of being disruptive. People did this ALOT in WoW when I was RP'ing there, drinking enlargement potions, putting on huge armour and then danced on the tables while yelling alot of random shit. Basically "HEY, LOOK AT ME, I'M AN IDIOT!" kind of people. Link to comment

Threndual Posted June 30, 2015 Share #12 Posted June 30, 2015 Basically all of the above. Biggest issue is actually a small one and is no ones fault but my own. And that is seeing the same race majority, it's no surprise to me to find Miqo'te and Hyur are very popular but I myself am a fan of Roegadyn and Au'ra and there doesn't seem to be as many of them around. Cithramir Posted June 30, 2015 Share #14 Posted June 30, 2015 Most of what the OP has said falls into line of some pet peeves for me. Another I would add is people who don't take into consideration the guards or other militaristic NPCs around when they go to fight someone. I won't name games here and I'll admit I have not been able to RP in Realm Reborn yet as I only recently joined the game. Yet, one scenario in other games that has always made me :frustrated: is when one player would outwardly attack another player with a handful of NPC guards around them. Sorry guys but if you wield a weapon in a public place and go to attack someone, the guards are going to be on you in a matter of seconds. (Disclaimer: This of course only applies to cities and locations that have values enough to care about such things. A pirate city may have 'city guards' but they may not exactly be paid to prevent the open attack between two individuals. ) Link to comment
Sin Posted June 30, 2015 Share #15 Posted June 30, 2015 That moment when you realize your perfect, flawless post that on its own might make a convincing argument that you are the modern reincarnation of Shakespeare himself hasn't been responded to in a while... You're anxious. It's so good, and perfectly showcases your character. It is an embodiment of his spirit in text form. You want to be nice though, you don't want to hurry your partner if they're just taking a little longer than usual, so you wait, and you wait. You RP partner whispers you after a while. "Did you post?" You scream your lungs out cursing the FFXIV chat system. Once more it has arbitrarily decided to devour your post, perhaps believing it too gentle, too pure for this world. You reluctantly set out to break your masterpiece up into smaller bits. 11 Link to comment

That person who is the "3edgy5me" type that makes you want to hurl a Hawthorn Heights CD and Hot Topic Gift Card toward them and wish them the best of luck. But hey, it's hard out there in Eorzea. 111 Posted June 30, 2015 Share #18 Posted June 30, 2015 My main pet peeve is people making emotes that include your character's reactions. Especially in combat. Something like... "Buff Van Darkblade parries sending the sword flying from Evangeline's hand." Unless we have pre agreed, don't tell me what happens to my sword. It's MY SWORD! RAWR. I'm all for having my char be beat down, you just don't get to do it! 1 Link to comment
Gone. Posted June 30, 2015 Share #19 Posted June 30, 2015 Don't have many, but these would be the major ones that I tend not to always share opinions on: Dropping sensitive subject matter (i.e. rape, abuse, mutilation, torture, bigotry, etc.) without fair warning and consent. Expecting my characters to always be happy and affectionate with open arms, especially during situations where that is exceedingly unlikely to happen. Writing someone into a corner; always give your partner a decent way out. To not do so is incredibly unfair and counterproductive to cooperative storytelling. -People who emote what would be an internal monologue. I shouldn't be able to read your mind unless I have some aforementioned ability to do so...which I don't. What if it's to build proper subtext? Link to comment

If I had a dollar for every time the chat system has eaten one of Chao's posts, I wouldn't have to work anymore. Virella Posted June 30, 2015 Share #21 Posted June 30, 2015 Applying real life logic, issues and what not to this setting; if I wanted to roleplay irl, I ehm, would not roleplay and just go outside instead. 1 Link to comment
Asmodean Posted June 30, 2015 Share #22 Posted June 30, 2015 The only two I have would be: -Having rp out in the open world but then ignoring everyone buy your little group. If you don't want someone possible joining in then please avoid using /say. Most people from what I have seen are nice enough to ask before jumping in. - Others trying to shape my character growth and changes over time, to something they want to rp with more. Asmo is a more stoic and quite person for reasons, don't try to force him out of that and expect suddenly think he's fixed. It would just make him avoid your character for the time being until he has come into his own as a more open person. After all the changes have started for him, but no one would notice, so just let his change run there course. Link to comment
Syranelle Ironleaf Posted June 30, 2015 Share #23 Posted June 30, 2015 One of my biggest pet peeves in roleplay is the usage of would. Roleplay in game is present tense because the action is happening now, not later. The argument I most often receive is that it's passively "asking permission" to perform an action, leaving room for your RP partner(s) to react. You can do the same thing in present tense, though, you may have to be more descriptive in an effort to create visual or tonal cues for others to react to (like we do in real life.) 3 Link to comment
Flickering Ember Posted June 30, 2015 Share #24 Posted June 30, 2015 My RP pet peeve: -When people make a big deal out of RP pet peeves to the point where the roleplayer sounds like a stick in the mud. Usually, RP pet peeve threads end poorly. Regardless of your intentions, it is a negative premise. Listing these out commonly rile up some manner of paranoia, making it harder for folks who are already scared, to approach in RP. What does listing out pet peeves accomplish? It's not really a discussion thread. It is also, to be honest, hard to not get the impression that people care a great deal about the pet peeves they list. It smells of "if you do my RP pet peeve, you're not a good RPer or a good writer." But I get the feeling I am starting something with this. If you're posting just remember the following: A: no RPer is perfect B: you probably do something that somebody else considers a pet peeve C: those who invoke a pet peeve on your list probably have lots of other great positives about their RP style D: relax sometimes; it's good for you Lastly, I don't consider things like meta-gaming, God moding, power gaming, ic/ooc crossing as pet peeves, personally. I would consider those common courtesy. 2 Link to comment
