Your character as a student.

Recommended Posts

There was definitely another thread or two like this one in the past... still, it's been a while and I feel I have a bit of a better grip on my characters since the last time, so maybe the answers will be at least a little different.

Chachan is likely the sort that would be struggling in a few of his classes - especially in the more academic ones like the various sciences and mathematics - mostly due to comprehension issues. He tries his hardest, though, to fight for every C he gets. Due to his physique, he could possibly be scoped out to be on the school football team's defensive line - where he does surprising well considering being so much shorter than everyone else - and this could lead to some more passes than not on a few tests in order to keep him around for the team. They likely keep this on the down-low, though, since there was certainly an incident once where the fact became common knowledge and he got pretty upset about it and redoubled his study efforts to show he could do it himself... resulting in the kid being all burned out for a big game.

Born to a family who is relatively famous for making a selling firearms, there would probably be rumors going around about how someone shouldn't upset him because he'd totally cause the next school shooting. Instead, he's just an awkward teen who is nervous around girls, wants to have friends, and is more content than anything either making things in shop class or working on his car. The little musclebound lunkhead who, despite what most people would think, stops to pet dogs and will totally help you out if your car breaks down.

This is actually a large part of my character's backstory. She comes from Sharlayan and was the top student in her class. She's always been the quiet type and while she wasn't openly smug about her intelligence, as you described, she does have something of a superiority complex. She is also prone to do this:

Gogon would likely fall under this sort of thing too, actually. Top of his class, especially in mathematics, and likely taking several AP courses at once. However, he's much more aloof about his intelligence and thus his superiority complex would be so much more obvious. Due his lack of physical strength, you'd figure he'd end up shoved in a locker more than once...

But he "weaponizes" his intelligences as well. If there's a dirt on a student, he probably knows it and makes sure they know he knows, just so they show him the proper respect. Never anything openly overt, but the signs are usually there that he has some sort of hold on folks since even the local gangs will not harry him (though they'd certainly grumble about him). Oddly, he also serves as a tutor and is generally a good source of information if you can both pay the prerequisite fee and deal with his condescending attitude.

Judge, even in this situation, would be too old to be a student. He's either that strict elderly teacher who is very by the books or, possibly more likely, something as high as the vice- or full-on principal. He'd be the sort prone to giving lengthy and confusing lectures on what students should be doing at assemblies and having a strange probation method that baffles even the other staff. Double-Secret Probation? Sounds like something Principle Jredthys would set.

Don't be fooled, though. Even with all his oddities, he's very much in favor of seeing the student body succeed and will go to great lengths to ensure that. He's willing to put his own neck out on the line to ensure a safe, orderly learning environment and - while oftentimes confusing - his punishments for infractions are always fair and scale appropriately to the issue at hand. Plus, he is quick to let you off the hook if it turns out you weren't at fault or were set-up.

This took longer to think about than I care to admit.

Elise (Lynx) would be the type of student who adheres well to authority yet is secretly exploiting the rules for her benefit at every chance she gets. Her grades would be a combination of A's and B's; A's in sciences, mathematics, and law and B's in all other subjects. She doesn't have many friends but she doesn't avoid socializing every now and then. She's not the most attractive person out there, but she isn't very ugly either. Elise doesn't actively seek out trouble; it either comes to her or is a by-product of her actions. A dark sense of humor lines her words, which can put off most people trying to know her better. In reality, it's her way of coping with a lot of violence in her past. She also carries a concealed switchblade on her person at all times.

Other students look at her like a quiet authority figure; even the hoodlums, troublemakers, and other kids prone to showing off their strength display grudging respect for her. The goody two-shoe students aren't any better as they're on guard and wondering if she'll backstab them. Students who are mostly indifferent, got plenty of other things to do, the military type, or are carefree won't mind her presence as much; they may even welcome it. She refrains from exercising authority unless necessary, lest she is seen as openly abusing her power.

If there were a phrase to describe her, it'd likely be "a lynx with glasses."

Just joined Vyldbrand Academy IC, so I guess we'll see!

(...though for a rl sort of High School....)

A'kos would be the transfer student people didn't quite know what to make of at first. He'd be reserved until someone struck up a conversation, then he'd be pretty talkative. Tall and exceptionally athletic yet have absolutely NO interest in joining a sports team, and thus be hounded by coaches and varsity players alike. You might be able to catch him working out in the school weight room or practicing gymnastics after school though.

He'd try to hang with the smart crowd, until he was turned away for not being brainy enough and/or being mistaken for a jock. So he'd be something of an outcast by midyear. He'd probably have one or two very good friends that were also on the outs. He'd be cool with that, and probably be their protector from school bullies. Probably have a crush on a certain girl, one that was tough and an anti-bully bully herself, backing her up in fights and enjoying them but probably not spill his actual feelings.

Classes he'd try hard, but would probably top off as a B student generally, with a couple A's depending on the class. Not doing so well on tests, but making up for it with extra work outside of class, or on projects. He'd love classes he wasn't so great in, like literature, and be more bored with classes he was great in like certain sciences or PE. The class he'd shine most in would be machine shop and mechanics. By his junior/senior year, he'd get a reputation for being a grease monkey, maybe a biker, which would be fine, since he's been working on the sickest motorcycle that school ever saw. With a certain fondness for video games and anime, it'd probably come out looking as close to Fenrir from Advent Children as possible without breaking too many laws. Only it would have a side car attachment for his best friend who still couldn't drive, because, well, that's his buddy.

Years later, he'd show up at the reunion riding that bike's evolved descendant (and, it'd probably have a Cylon monoeye or Kit's tracer) a highly paid engineer and top martial artist. He probably wouldn't worry about seeing his buds from school because, they'd still be in touch anyway.

Kai would be the bookworm, always having a book in hand. Regardless, He wouldn't be the one who would out-smart anyone, Just always obsessed with his books and reading. Kai's brain doesn't contain knowledge aswell as most. Information goes in one ear, lingers for a few hours and leaves through the other.

D'aito had little interest in literacy until she learned that books might contain stories about adventure and tales in strange places with strange people.  After that, she would always badger traveling merchants for books.

She had little formal education and experienced a lot of hands-on learning in a home-school or apprenticeship fashion.

So if she suddenly transferred to high school, she'd be that girl who practically memorized the entire Harry Potter canon but couldn't do basic math, had little knowledge of actual history, and was unfamiliar with popular culture, and had been homeschooled. (And no, that's not me.  But I am friends with her)

Sel would be that guy that, when the teacher came to collect the homework, would hand them a weeks worth of homework and already be reading even further ahead in the book. He would also be taking extra classes so that he could master everything that the school had to offer him.

He would also at some point try running for Class President, but would most likely fail if he had to do it on his own, because he would get so distracted that he would forget to put up posters, or go to the debates.

Aiswynd would be that weird foreign exchange student that is having a hard time fitting into local society. He's kind of quiet and confused with how people act and social customs. He's also the reason the local stray cats have all begun hanging out on campus because he feeds them during lunch.

Arch would be the type to build a fort out of books in the back of class while breaking fingers of classmates or teachers trying to distract his independant study-montage.

Teachers dislike him and his shenigans but aren't really able to do anything because he's like pet of principal and keeps scoring high grades.

Nira - Dedicated bookworm, excessive compulsion to forsake everything else. Accidentally stains the front of her skirt with ketchup, but is too fixated on the upcoming test, so it escapes notice. This incident is noted as she walks into class, and that is what's best remembered of her for the rest of the year.

Leih'a - Average dork. Not too good at school, not too athletic, does not have any particular social finesse. Is clumsy, always strikes out with girls. Has average (read: above average) looks. Car may be a robot in disguise. His pinnacle school career moment is flash mobbing the prom's slow dance number, having bribed the DJ to replace soft jazz with hardcore rave techno while he dances in his shirt, tie, and skivvies. And nothing else.

Leona - Total tomboy rebel. Grades are just below average, has a devil-may-care attitude, and would rather have fun and enjoy life than fret over the future. Boys avoid her, perhaps out of fear she might break 'em one way or another. Likely has a secret love for something very girly that she would not outwardly associate herself with.

Luca - Rich 'princess' sort. Quiet, overly focused on the grades, much like Nira. Unlike Nira, the actual 'learning' is secondary. Only success matters. Can be initially cold and stuck up, but reasoning with her will find she's rather down to earth and compassionate. Defining moment is rushing to the defense of the clumsy awkward girl everyone picks on. Father probably used to (read: still does, despite insisting having retired from) work for a notable organized crime lord.

Gara? Total smoking in the girls room rebel, though she'd spend a lot of time hiding and reading books... No one must know! And at the end of the semester she's among the top ranked (but not THE top) and anyone who breathes a word about it gets punched.

Ah, the double life~

But then, she never had a formal education, but if she had it probably would've been like that. Instead she had a lot of tutors of the years, and when she was between them she bought or outright stole texts.

In his younger years, he'd be the little kid whose constantly in trouble. Not for being a bad kid really, but talking to loud, forgetting class is in session, energy levels off the chart.

In high school years, shacked up with whatever female he could get behind the bleachers, complete with all the alcohol and drugs he could sneak in

Ellie would probably be going to a private school -- and she'd be that infuriating kid who perpetually slacks off, crams a 2-week project into an all nighter, turns it in at the last possible minute, and still gets a good grade on it. You never see her study or expend any effort on her work, unless it's something that genuinely interests her. More often than not, she comes in late and falls asleep in the back of the class instead.

If she had actual motivation, she'd easily be an honors student. But instead, she's content with her B average. Everyone likes her and yet she has very few friends; she's not considered a 'popular' kid. Her favorite subject is easily drama class, and she can Shakespeare like nobody's business.
