Miss Gaz Posted October 30, 2015 Share #52 Posted October 30, 2015 I have a Lalafell for a FC leader and I take him very seriously even if he does play a child like his char is 15 or so. But we all treat him with respect. Link to comment
Val Posted October 30, 2015 Share #53 Posted October 30, 2015 Children Lalafel is just the stigma that comes with playing the race due to the awful majority playing them. Same applies to gay/manwhore catboys, mesbian catgirls, and others. You either accept that it is there and RP beyond it or play something else. 2 Link to comment

Leanne Posted October 30, 2015 Share #60 Posted October 30, 2015 As everyone stated, the childish aspect is just a stereotype mainly created by the players, since the majority of the lalafells shown in MSQ tend to be some scary/creepy peeps. My character treats them respectfully, but is not over showering them with hugs and pettings, cause, cause...well, they're adorable and some of them let her do it! (even the overly serious ones) '-' Although, indeed, want to be taken more seriously? Grow a mustache. It is surekill. Heck, grow some form of facial hair. Even you ladies. Yes, talking to you Virara. Link to comment

rainichan Posted October 30, 2015 Share #64 Posted October 30, 2015 I kid, I kid. My main is a lala. While she might be eye level with a sea of ass, that does not make her a child. She survived the Calamity, deals with pirates-- excuse me, privateers -- and while sure, she's happy and cheery, she's definitely not a child. Maining one, whether I really rp her or not, I would definitely take them seriously. They may be cute, and sure, they can use it to their advantage, but not all will. I mean, yes, while this may be hard to take seriously: she can totally kick your ass. Link to comment
Zezeki Posted October 30, 2015 Share #65 Posted October 30, 2015 Zekiki's a pretty serious person, and that goes a long way in being treated that way. Like I stated earlier, it's never been a particular problem for me (I'm on break from work so I can write a bit more.) There's going to be certain stigmas surrounding any race in RP within a MMO setting due to how a majority of those players play their characters. Which has been stated a number of times throughout the thread. If you really want a character of that race, you have to observe the stereotype, and why it's there in order to try to get past it. You still might come in contact with it, but that's not something that you deal with on your end. You could just do what I do. And that is just doing you and if it isn't working out the way you want just say fuck it and shelve the character then look at making something else. 1 Link to comment
LiadansWhisper Posted October 30, 2015 Share #66 Posted October 30, 2015 Love the NPC Lalafell you run into. Unfortunately, most of the PCs I run into are pretty childish (not all - I'm lookin at YOU, Zanzan!). It's hard not to treat them as a bit silly with the uber-Kawaii emotes and the like. Pumpkinweed Posted October 30, 2015 Share #67 Posted October 30, 2015 I read just about every single comment here and I agree and disagree with some of the comments. In regards to Gus, my character, being some sort of staple or guideline to the quintessential lalafell, I simply say 'I hope not'. This isn't because I don't take my own character seriously, but because I feel role-players all bring a little bit of something different with their own creation. When I first made Gus, it started off as a character who had little and had to make his way to where he is. Those that 'don't take the character seriously' weren't around to experience his journey and that's okay; don't use my character as the shining example of what you think isn't something 'serious' because I'll beg to differ. Gus learned magick and had a teacher in conjuring (L'yhta Mahre). That lasted for a good long while until Gus had everything he needed to move on. Next came business and he learned some stuff from players (No longer playing unfortunately) from the wonderful free company. From there, Gus had to recruit people on the promise that he could pay their wages and that he had a legitimate business. Only players who actually interacted with the character would know that he was playing it close to the chest in regards to the whole operation. The character was stealing gil from fountains for goodness sake. He lucked out with "Spooky the 13th" being a huge success and thus making him a gillionaire. These days, Gus plans events, makes business partnerships, checks on people, feeds the poor, helps out adventurer's that are short on cash without any due reciprocation and so forth. This, most people generally know... but has anyone really joined Gus on any adventures? Some have and they know he hunts all manner of rumor and paranormal monsters. There is a lot to the character and I'd say despite being someone obsessed with pumpkin, he's a character that is taken seriously for the most part. In regards to Berrod's statement about 'not taking Gus seriously', of course he doesn't. Berrod is a busy man who's off doing some pretty heavy stuff in comparison to selling goods and hunting rumors, ect. Most players wouldn't take a businessman seriously because they have bigger fish to fry; that does not make him or any other lalafell character that isn't a scrapper (adventurer) any less serious. Bottom line, a character is as serious as the character gets involved with whatever he's role-playing with. Gus has seen and done it all with the best of the best and without having to pull out a weapon and beat something or someone down. I'd say that puts him somewhere. If someone wants to play a lalafell and be treated seriously, as many have already said, act normal. I read some people say 'well my character likes chocolates'... so? I'm a grown man and I love chocolates too, that doesn't make someone a child. Go out there, get your hands dirty, interact, smile and if you have to get into a scrap even if you lose, do it. This is just role-play and you'll get what every other player gets in the end. Also, I've seen many other lalafell played right. I don't RP with him much, but Chachan is played just fine as he is and I've never seen any problems with him. Heck, I've never really had problems either... what's this about now? :dazed: Link to comment
V'aleera Posted October 31, 2015 Share #68 Posted October 31, 2015 This is an issue of IC-OOC bleed more often than not, like a lot of other biases in the broader RP community. Correct it where it occurs, and ditch anyone who refuses to be corrected. Link to comment
Shoshopu Posted October 31, 2015 Share #69 Posted October 31, 2015 Chachan is probably known for playing his main, young adventurer character, but he also plays Chachanji's older brother Gogonji, who's basically a cranky curmudgeon. I've played with Virara and Shoshopu too, who are both mature and never come across as child-like. weeps The whole childlike lalafell thing honestly isn't something that occurred to me at all when I was making Shoshopu, and I have never felt like I've had that problem, but some of my friends who play lalafell have. Back when I played FFXI and my tarutaru character, who I kept in mind when I made Shoshopu, had adventures in my imagination because I didn't write or RP, she got into some pretty serious and heavy stuff. However, since it was strictly in my imagination she kind of existed in a vacuum. Nobody ever took her one way or the other because she didn't interact with other players that way. So I went into playing Shoshopu with the assumption people would take her seriously and I just went with it. But I don't think Shopu comes off as one of those dark-compensation lalafell (like Virara or Abigor, who could and have kicked her ass, respectively). It's not something I intentionally go for, anyway. Her race only affects her character to the extent that her culture has influenced her as a character (the nomads who ride around on big animals thing), otherwise, she's just... her. She's a smart young woman doing magicky things. tl;dr at the outset I chose her race for reasons that were independent of the kind of character I wanted to have and the story I wanted to tell. And for the most part, with just a few exceptions, that's how she's carried out in RP. She's practically only a lalafell because in FFXI I was a tarutaru, and in that game it was for all that sweet MP. a tangent: Sometimes I wonder. Maybe I just don't RP at the Quicksand and public events enough, or something. I know people with lalafell characters who get creepy tells sometimes when they go out, but I've never had that on Shoshopu. (Sometimes I get compliments on her appearance in general, but not lately) I wonder if she looks too... "normal"... Dark, natural colored hair, as opposed to some kinda bright color, no makeup, no kawaii uguu outfits (at least not conventionally kawaii uguu, but I think she's cute as shit) ... and I wonder if that might be tangentially related to why I don't feel as if I've ever had the problem of people ICly not taking Shoshopu "seriously". But I'm used to not really attracting a lot of attention online in general (anon hate or creepers and the like) so it might just be whatever reason there is for that. This post got rambley as shit, I'm sorry 1 Link to comment

This post got rambley as shit, I'm sorry I like how Shoshopu looks. (Too bad no big eyebrows though...) I think she's very cute. I'm sad we've not had many chances to RP yet despite living across Mist, but I'm going to make more of an effort to be around. I am pretty aware of how uber-weird my character is, and I'm thankful I get to play with both other Lalafell and cloudbreathers who are more normal yet not boring. I always look for opportunities to do happier or funny RP when I can to counteract my general writing habits, and to lend then weight. Only dark rp all the time gets depressing. As for the weird RPers, a few had their characters express an interest in Virara, which was unexpected but fine with me so long as they don't expect anything. I've only had one other Lala approach Virara with untoward intentions... Egh. However, one of the benefits of being such an impossibly innocent and yet corrupted character is I get to play dumb when those scenarios happen. I've gotten good at blowing up romance and erp scenes before they happen with her ferrous cranium. Link to comment
