Final Fantasy VII Remake Gameplay

Recommended Posts

I saw that as well. Could just be a placeholder UI, like we saw in early Versus/XV trailers, too. Nothing about the combat looked turn-based to me. If they can find a way to make ATB work in a game like this, though, then more power to 'em. But FFVII meets Kingdom Hearts sounds pretty amazing to me, more so than any turn-based system. And I say that as a person whose all time favorite FF is FF6.

You know, after looking at the interface you'll notice there is a "Defend" option.

Given how reminiscent this is of Kingdom Hearts and how much this looks like a RTB Hack and Slash I kneejerked into assuming that as well....until I noticed that.

Why would you have a selectable "Defend" option with a RTB system? You wouldn't.

Perhaps it's just a updated and very pretty turn based system?

......

*crosses fingers?*

It's probably a "block" action that's binded to a button.

Like in those RTB games where you block, roll, counter etc

Actually, XIII was real time (ish) and had a defend button iirc

best decision they made, nobody wants to sit through that atb bullshit.

You should visit some of the FFVII dedicated boards. GameFAQs has a lot of people livid at the idea this won't be turn based anymore, xD

From the looks of it, I'm getting a FFXIII vibe since they do show explicit Attack and Defend options in lieu of just pressing buttons to do those actions.

I think of XIII as automatic combat more than real time combat.

Thankfully this seems to be a reworking of VX's engine, which is exactly what I was hoping for.

That part where Cloud turns sideways to squeeze through a gap is flat out re-skinned assets from VX.

I love me my turn based games (looking at you Dragon Quest) but I don't need to play the exact same game with better graphics. I want it to be different.

Yep. That scene immediately made me think of that cave in Episode Duscae.

You could guard, but only if your active character was a Sentinel. Otherwise it looked like this:

Soooo, I thought some of you might be interested in this.

"I can’t say the new game is completely action-based, but it has more of that element and real-time than the previous game."

“However, what makes Final Fantasy and RPG different from other games is that the players have the ability to choose weapons, capabilities and magic to be strategic minded, so while the new game has more real-time element, it will also maintain that strategy building element, balancing these two factors perfectly to enhance the gaming experience."

“The game is still in development, and we have not fully grasped all the abilities of and upgrades made to PlayStation 4. The graphics are superb on PlayStation 4, and more polygon volume is available to make it better.

“The way we harnessed the power of the PlayStation 4 was to maintain the graphic quality of characters like Cloud, Tifa, and Aerith in the movie called Advent Children in our game, and this was the starting point. So, what we’re aiming for with the Final Fantasy VII Remake is to have the same quality of these characters in real-time while playing the game, and this is only achievable with PlayStation 4.”

I'm gonna be the one to say it and will probably get chewed out for it but fuck it.

In my opinion, turn based combat is dead these days, people should get over it.

I somewhat agree, but it works well for some games. Bravely Default/Second and Dragon Quest are still carrying that torch. But you're absolutely right that most are moving towards outright action or some kind of hybrid system a la Tales and Star Ocean.

Yeah, long live Tales and its' easily abusable word salad acronym (linear motion) battle system (or EAWSA-LMBS for short).

no, I do not like Tales, and as far as I'm concerned Star Ocean died at 2, and we don't count the PSP remake as it replaced the hilarious VO.

If it's fun to play and the translation is up to today's standards I'll pick it up. if I hear cross-dressing scene has been removed I will rage.

Oh shit is that low effort posting. Maybe. Um ok.

They somehow managed to make Cloud more feminine but I guess that's the style in Japan. But Barrett is up my alley and around the corner. So, yes. Good. Barrett. MMM. Yeah. YEAAAHHH.

I really like turn based combat :C

It's not dead, the success of games like Pillars of Eternity or Shadowrun belay that reality.

Some people like the tactical aspect. I still like action RPGs, I've played almost every Tales game. But I really like turn based RPGs. I'm sad that this remake is dropping the original system.

^This. I do like action RPGs, but they just can't compare to turn-based RPGs.

Still, y'all should've seen this coming, why would they waste time and resources to remaster the original FFVII in HD if they were going to make the same, identical game with updated graphics?

Exactly this. That would be lazy and unnecessary, as the original, ATB-based game is available on almost every device imaginable at this point.

This remake is clearly designed to introduce a new generation of gamers to an old classic, not exclusively pander to original fans. Therefore making it impenetrable with ATB doesn't sound like a wise idea. Given this is also a console game, citing examples like Pillars of Eternity (which I find hard to the point of unenjoyment) is not entirely useful. They want people to play through the game and win, not get stuck at a notoriously difficult boss which is the third in a sequence, and dying sets you back 45 minutes. If people want that, play the original.

But it's not as prettttttyyyyyyyy

It's like remaking Super Mario and turning it into an FPS.

It's absolutely nothing like that. But hyperbole is fun! Let me try:

"I want my highly detailed, 1080p, pseudorealistic character models to adopt a cool battle stance and stand perfectly still in formation as rockets are launched at them while waiting for a meter to charge in order to retaliate. Because it's so much prettier that way!" :?

Don't get me wrong. I love turn-based games, and I love the ATB system. But I've already played that game. I'm replaying it right now, even! It holds up really well. But this is going to be a fresh experience for newcomers and fans of the original. That's awesome, I think.

I think this game at least does justice to what was said. A FF7 . Its not a high definitive edition or just a FF7 with prettier graphics. It's a true remake in that sense. A remake that caters to a broader audience nowadays than the past did. A remake that will be known as part of SE's trademark seeing how they are progressing towards an action-based system for their games with FF15. (Also gaming technology wasn't advanced enough to make complex action games). I'm having hope for it atm.

Also I would not use Pillar of Autumn and Shadowrun as comparisons to the same turn-based system that FF has used. They're in the style of western-style tactical turn-based games and IMO play completely different than japanese turn-based games that we see in bravely default or FF. Do not forget either, Japanese companies design their games to cater to what they may find successful in their loca demographic first before considering western audiences (at least, thats what I think.) Its why design philosophies for eastern games and western games are so different. You wouldn't use Shadow of Mordor to compare to the action combat of Kingdom hearts.

Um.

It's not hyperbole... a game is a rule system. If you change the rules of monopoly it's not monopoly anymore. If you change the core mechanics of a game, it's not the same game.

There's not really any wiggle room. This is a new game, that will have the story and characters of ffvii. But it won't be FFVII, which makes me sad, as I was hoping for an updated VII, with better graphics and new side quests and things. Not this.

I'm so glad we're in agreement that this is not the same game.
