"Ugh I need to update my character's Wiki"

Recommended Posts

So this is weird, and I don't know where else to ask it, but

I've noticed on mine and my friends' character's pages there's a new item in the infobox for "Server" and it's listed as "Unknown". Now when I go to my character's page to edit it, it's not there to edit. I assume it updates based on what category the character's page is in? Since there are Balmung and Gilgamesh categories? How do you change this?

edit: I tried throwing [[Category: Balmung]] in there so it'd update the category the page was in but it still didn't work? Still says unknown? How fix pls advise

edit 2: I guess you're just manually supposed to add | server = Balmung (or Gilgamesh) to the infobox. Kinda sucks, I'd rather it not be there at all or at least be able to change where in the infobox it is

The server (along with Au Ra, Doma, sharlayan) tags were added recently. It should be an optional field as per Freelance Wizard's explanation here.

The current infobox template can always be checked here as well!

There was a pretty big demand for a server field that could do auto-tagging, so I added it in. I just changed it so that it's fully optional (i.e., if you don't provide it, it doesn't appear, as opposed to defaulting to "Unknown").

In terms of positioning, there's no real way to move fields around in the infobox at a user's command, and no matter where the field is placed, someone isn't going to like it. :P So, I just put it before the 6 optional stat blocks. If you really want the server to be at the end, you can tag the page manually and add server as one of the 6 optional stats in the infobox.

Is there a WYSIWYG editor for wiki? Because I get lost on html.

It's got some visual editing, but not really. Wiki code is shortcuts for the HTML it eventually gets rendered as. The editor would have tools for things like bullet points, lists, bold, etc.

Are you trying to make a page without using a template though?

No I swiped my old characters template but the code parts to change color etc add symbols just confuses the hell out of me. xD

No, but it's not HTML. It's wiki markup. Kinda like BB code for forums, and the text editor does have a toolbar to help you out.

EDIT: Ah, and I'm slow. Ah well.

well.....you can use HTML in wiki markup. A good example of this is seen in the Bancroft templates

Not sure which the one I'm using is. I'll have to look at the other templates available maybe switch it out.

True. I guess my main point is that you don't *have* to use HTML. But, yeah, the Bancroft templates have a good chunk in there.

Looks like a Bancroft-based template, so colors are done in HTML.

I'd highly recommend using something like this if your trying to find the code for a color! (it's free and web-based)

https://color.adobe.com/create/color-wheel/

The hex code is what you'd want to replace to change the colors. For large replacements, I'd suggest copying all the wiki code into a plain-text editor (notepad works!) and using the replace command. It can save you a lot of time.

If you've got questions on editing stuff, lemme know!

Awesome I'll look into this more! Really appreciate the help!

*looks around aimlessly* ...if anyone ever needs help with making a wiki, please bother me. I like helping lol

I...really may need to take you up on this. *nods slowly* I've got a lot of the info blurbs and tidbits ready, even a template (and permission to use it) but am just clueless and kinda freeze up when I start working on it.

Just updated mine with slight changes and additions, but nothing big.

As for meta-gaming, I have Vachir's entire background written there, and I have yet to be approached by someone who pretended to know it ICly without having Vachir tell them. So from my experience, people have either been good at not meta-gaming, or just not read my wiki, though I have posted the (tiny)URL for it in my search info for anyone to read. :P

I can also imagine people looking at Vachir's background info and go "lol, too long, didn't read". And I have gone with the standard template, so I guess it looks boring which could also make people avoid it. xD

I keep meaning to create a page, but whenever I try, I always have a bit of a crisis of confidence and wonder who on earth would want to read it.  I'll have to force myself this weekend, I think.

I had that too, but my alternate use of the wiki is to kinda remind myself of Vachir's past and traits etc. Like, if I can't remember his twin sister's name, I can just look it up on his wiki. xD

I never thought of that!  I keep notes using notepad, which isn't ideal!

I do the same thing. I also just have a massive information obsession, so I like to have somewhere to keep all my information or have a nice place to reference people if they ask a question about my character(s).

I don't much shy away from keeping more "confidential" stuff on there because it amounts to a test for others for me. With that knowledge at your fingers tips, are you still honest and good enough with your character to keep meta out of it? If not, well, then I likely wouldn't have wanted anything to do with you in the first place. If so, great! Maybe some of that information will actually benefit people in starting RP.

I also have a habit of combing through others' wikis for layouts and features I find aesthetically pleasing and ganking them for my own use. ^_^; I am always working on Corelyn and Dail'a's wikis to improve them or add more info.

*squints at*

*continues to fiddle with the default template while trying not to break it*

I know the feeling. I'm terrified that when I edit something I'll somehow ruin the template. Not surprising, I suppose, given that my solution to technical problems is to thwack something until it works again!

i've p much stopped updating mine. A) barely anyone reads it and B) most of the important details i know off hand.

I'm sure there's plenty of people who read other role-player's profiles. There's just no real way to show it. I'm firmly against any sort of 'page view' counter though - that sort of thing just encourages popularity contests and e-peen stroking.

It existed for the site used back on the WoW server I played on and ended up being removed as a feature due to many role-players abusing it, flaunting it and generally just tricking it to be seen as much more popular than they actually were.

Though to be fair it is easy to feel like people aren't reading stuff. It's why feedback is important and a friendly message given to someone in response to an intriguing post/story/profile can mean a lot.

I've had people message me on the RPC before saying they've looked at my wiki page and are interested in setting up RP. If it's happened to me, it's not that uncommon. :P Especially with how my pages are only half-done at best... Speaking of which, I should probably finish sorting out the backstory for some of them...

Beyond this, it's a computationally expensive thing for MediaWiki that interferes with caching, so we've turned it off for performance reasons. :) Popularity contests are harmful in more ways than one!
