I don't have the scan to check it again, but I seem to remember it was stated rather approximately along those lines, that they have to lead their tribe on the way to greatness or something. Which doesn't necessarily mean that they are tribe chiefs, but merely leaders. Which also tends to comfort me in saying that they have a very central social status to the tribe, and not just on breeding. But maybe I'm wrong. One screen definitely said leading them to greatness, and another mentioned them being leaders of the tribe. It was weird. I tried to find it on my phone for exact wording but I couldn't, and my work blocks tumblr via firewall (not that I'd remotely care to get on it at work >_> definitely not a safe place). If someone else doesn't post it by the time I get home, I'll see if I can find it! Here is the Seeker page if this is what you were looking for. On topic... I am also VERY surprised that they didn't couch things in vague terms like "a small number of..." or "few" and yes, I do feel for those who try very hard to abide by lore and play a Dragoon. This is rather pulling the rug out from under them. Thank you! I think there's another part that someone else capped that talks about Nunhs being leaders, though.

The lore book says that Nunh are leaders in Seeker tribes as a standard in direct contradiction to the original lore post. I don't remember anything like that? They don't say outright they are leaders... Unless there is a scan I missed... They do. I saw the scan as well and raised a brow. I positioned Val's father as the leader of his sect/tribe, since Wolf = alpha male = nunh seems to fit well together, but I acknowledged that most tribes had breeding males and leaders separate. I assumed it was an error, and they did state that there were some errors.

Nah. You don't need lore explaining what equates to obvious game mechanics and chat systems. Linkpearls, for example, are just custom chat channels, yet they felt the need to go very in-depth with explaining them through in game for some reason. It's not just MMOs they do it with. It's every single game they've released in.. forever.

Well, that circles back to something someone brought up earlier - the Soul Crystal helps you learn the abilities and whatnot in most cases. I remember someone likening them to arcane cliff notes that help spin you up to speed faster than someone who didn't have one. So, does that knowledge just... disappear from your mind once you don't have it anymore? I know mechanically you go back to your base class and whatnot, but what about from an IC perspective? Do those memories and skill sets remain? Do they get sort of fuzzy and difficult to recall like dreams after waking up? Or are they just gone entirely, leaving you feeling like you KNEW how to do it but it's forever on the tip of the proverbial tongue? See, this is the problem I have with SE. Ever since... FFX, maybe? They've had this stupid idea/thing where they have to immerse all of their game mechanics in in-game lore. I appreciate the effort, but some mechanics really just don't need it as I would hope/think people are intelligent enough to realize it is a mechanic. ..That being said, I would assume it's the latter of what you offered, based solely on the mechanic alone. The abilities a character is given are insanely powerful and require a great deal of skill and experience to pull off. The soulstone gives you that. I can imagine losing it would cause someone to lose the knowledge, but through experience you may be able to learn to do it without. The problem is that some people would no doubt try to say they can learn everything without soulstones, although I guess we already have some that RP knowing everything with soulstones.

I don't think it really matters all that much in the long run. As people said, they can RP however they want and most people will probably continue to do so regardless of the lore. I'm sure a few things will need to be changed on a per-character basis, but overall I agree with the rest. Just say you left the order or so on and so forth. Truth be told, in this game, you almost have to RP as some sort of special snowflake-y thing in order to RP any of the jobs. They're all--if not most--built around the idea of being some incredibly rare, powerful occurrence. Some people follow that, others just prefer to avoid it altogether. I still stand by the idea that the Soulstone thing is just a dumb mechanic for job transitioning that SE has to explain via bad writing, but that's just me. I tend to ignore/avoid talk of them IC if at all possible and assume everyone is just super well trained

In-Game Achievement in Relation to a Character
Val replied to Renault Delumiere's topic in RP Discussion
There are no IC governments or anything like that. The Council was.. decent. It was fun. I wasn't directly a part of it so much as I RPed a character that doubled as a bodyguard/assassin for Dreyfus and kind of gathered information to give to the Council. I was a Night Elf rogue It was a lot of fun! Here, most people seem pretty laid back. I don't think anyone really does the achievement stuff. People do bend the lore, but usually within the purview of what has already been established. No one has any sayso/governing role over others, and I am admittedly surprised to not see some sort of FC/guild based on the Flames or whatever law force to patrol the streets. Almost every MMO I've RPed in has something to the equivalent of that. -
In-Game Achievement in Relation to a Character
Val replied to Renault Delumiere's topic in RP Discussion
Thanks for your reply. There was another poster asking about the WoW comment so I will clarify for you both! There were a handful of players on Moon Guard who had claimed to be part of the groups of heroes who had conquered certain enemies. As a server-wide rule, you could only claim such if you held the realm-first title/acheivement associated with it. I am thinking of one player in particular as an example, a Paladin named Eldanesh, who had the "Conqueror of Naxxaramas" title, which he then wore proudly, and was part of his story in which he had been part of the team to storm the undead fortress of Naxxaramas and kill the minions of the Lich King within. Other players were free to claim to also have been alongside him, but they simply held less credibility. This was a discussion that was held on the realm forums (I think back in 2010?) and the general consensus was that this was "Ok" because only a small group of players could achieve these things and so there would not be hundreds of people walking around claiming to have killed the big bads ICly. Ah, yeah. That was after/around the time I quit, I think. I helped get super deep into Naxx 40 back in the day, but I never really cared to do Naxx 20 because it was just.. idk. The same? I was on Moon Guard when The Council was around, which consisted of myself (RPing as a guard), Dreyfus, uh.. Nithian? Female rogue? They made rules and whatnot for people in Stormwind to follow. I want to say Arranax was around then as well? I could drop some more old school names from there, but I don't really know what happened to it as I kind of bailed when the game got relatively boring for me. I know it no longer exists. I think people already claim "Hey I was with X" in game, such as fighting during the cataclysm and helping to take out primals, but no one expressly states they are the top whatever. As I said before, I don't mind people claiming whatever as long as they can back it up. I've had people claim to be the best combat fighter and then do some weird sprint 20 yards, bounce off a wall, then sprint 20 yards back kind of wrestling rip-off move and armbar someone in the ground. They were using rolls, so of course the attack connected, but I prefer far more realism in my combat. Flashy fights are how you usually get your ass kicked, and I would expect someone that claims to be the top however percent to know that kind of thing. This may sound a tad cynical, but I don't really have that much faith in people these days. Thank you for your clarification, though! Some of that may have been going on during my time there, but I honestly don't recall when I quit and how long I was around. -
In-Game Achievement in Relation to a Character
Val replied to Renault Delumiere's topic in RP Discussion
I'm in the camp that OOC achievements based on OOC merit/gameplay =/= IC achievements. Your character can be everything in the game, but there is no realistic way for that to happen unless you mary sue them to hell and back. Some people have lives, jobs, or just think the PvP in the game is atrocious and would prefer spending their time doing something else that they think is fun. I don't believe it right to limit these people based on personal interest. As someone mentioned earlier, so long as they pick something and can RP it well enough for it to be believed, I don't really care what they do while playing the game. It's the character I'm interested in, not their individual achievements. I played WoW for a very, very long time, and I'm not entirely sure when the achievement thing popped up. It must have been after I left. I do vaguely recall some people claiming they solo'd Onyxia/Ragnaos shortly after the first or second expansion IC and everyone laughing at them or just telling them it was impossible. But.. I mean, that's kind of common sense. Or you would think it would be. -
Personally, I tend to ignore them. I just don't see the point in RPing an NPC. If people want to write fanfiction and all of that, that's fine. As was mentioned earlier, I don't have to read fanfiction if I don't want to. If Val's hanging out in the Quicksand and Thancred or someone walks up behind him and thwaps him on the back of the head, he's forced to respond to that. I feel it's kind of egotistical to think that someone could write/assume everything about a character they never made up. There's just too many variables, many of which have already been listed here, that could come into play. Not only that, but while the RP may be personal headcanons, they're being written in a medium that everyone responds to things which are canon. If it was done somewhere else, privately, it wouldn't be such a big deal, and I don't mind people that do. To be honest, I really just don't understand it. I write/RP because I enjoy making characters and throwing them at whatever the world has to offer them, often changing them in various, surprising ways. That's the fun in RP for me, you know? Looking back a few years after making a character and seeing where they've ended up, as well as the various events (some small, some large) that helped shape them on their path. I like seeing all of these new, unique characters and the uncertainty of what they are like and how they will react to things. When you see X canon character, you already know (at best) how they are going to act, or at worst, have to deal with someone that quite honestly plays them poorly.

A request to those of us already with personal houses and/or altitis
Val replied to Seriphyn's topic in FFXIV Discussion
As others here have already said, I plan on waiting a few days before I check to see if there are any apartments. I do have a handful of alts without an FC that I'd like to get personal rooms for, one of which would be very suited IC for an apartment, but it's not a necessity. I honestly don't play him much and if I really just want space for him, I can toss him in my main FC and call it a day. I really hope that SE fixes the housing situation, though, and that all of those without one are capable of buying them. You'd think they'd be able to manage something outside of a glorified FC room though. I get that there are certain limitations, but why not allow the room to have some sort of balcony or something? Idunno. At any rate, good luck to everyone that will be involved in the mad rush for apartments! -
I would have posted earlier, but I've been super busy IRL. I know we ran into each other a couple of times at tavern night and in the Quicksand, but I'd be happy to RP on any of my characters! I have some that are Void-related as well as those that hunt it, and some that would be keen on just relaxing and hanging out

It is definitely a ton of FATE grinding but it's not absolutely awful. I think we've got about three months to do it in? Going for one a day typically has you grind FATEs for about an hour depending on RNG. I've heard rumor that the last 3 weapons require 30 legendary tokens per, so I don't know if I'll be doing those all in one day. I don't think it's necessarily terrible unless you're a masochist and want to fate grind for days without stop.

Devs are likely doing some light reading. https://www.amazon.com/Pokebutt-Go-Pounded-Em-All-ebook/dp/B01IAGH4VI/ (SFW book listing lmao)

I'd definitely considered going, but I think I'm going to put my budget (and PTO) toward Dragoncon this year. Never been and it's relatively close to where I live. That being said, maybe next year will be better and I'm envious of everyone going hope all of you guys have fun!

Mei is fine. Just use distance against her. Even as primarily a Reinhardt player (due to people not wanting to play tank for whatever reason) I can outsmart her slow and two/three-shot her. McCree certainly needed the nerfs. He was killing tanks with his stun combo, something that was wildly out of balance. As it stood, no one stood a chance against him if he was utilized right. He could snipe Pharah out of the sky and stun kill literally any other character.
-
I was also hoping to slightly balance nerf Hanzo to match with nerfed WM as well since Hanzo's arrow can hurt a lot still (I dont mean his ulti) Tbh, Hanzo having twice the hitbox on characters than anyone else is what makes him so powerful.

IT'S SO GOOD HFUAHFUADFHAOHA083108234102FAHSFUHASDFUGAI3YGRAIFASFIAYG3RIAF Overwatch prolly like everyone else here

I've been playing it pretty religiously. I do have a couple of favorites, but I'm apparently one of those rare-ish people that swap to what we need based on what the enemy team has/what the situation calls for at the time. There's only one or two heroes that I don't feel I'm that great at. I think I'm pretty decent with the rest!

State of the gamePLAY, maybe. Most people i know from 1.0 still think the 1.0 story was better than the 2.0/3.0 story, in most places. Some of the newer story is pretty good, though! I wouldn't know! I skip all the cutscenes 8-)
-
It was a cheap retcon, one of many. I can't really say I blame them considering the state of the game at that point. Cheap retcon, but it worked sorta.

From then on, many others awoke with it, including every player character in the 1.0 storyline, since that story was less about a special snowflake super hero Warrior of Light, and instead about the Warriors of light, pluralized. They were abundant (and less strong than the current superhero WoL), but not anywhere near as abundant as people with the Echo. It's still RARE, but it's not locked out of player lore. You could have it, justifiably, and thus could fight primals without being tempered. This is really just a plot device that SE uses to justify a bunch of people playing the game at the same time. It is massively inconsistent with the actual main story, as there is only one Warrior of Light and suddenly multiple when there needs to be a raid or something done. As with most, I just avoid doing the whole main scenario altogether. Val (and most of my characters) are just dudes trying to live life. I find it to be a lot more fun that way than to try RPing special snowflake #15180410 with Drakenfang, his indestructible bastard sword and his bow that always hits its target.

I have to say I agree with this 100%. Most of the companies have shifted directions and the development teams that made those games are either spread out, gone altogether, or just managed to capture lightning in a bottle once and don't know how to recreate the magic. And maybe, just maybe, part of the problem is that we as gamers have grown up and down want to admit our interests have changed. Whatever the case may be, I'm glad to see a spiritual successor for Chrono Trigger soon.
