Miqo’te Mating Strategies Explored: a biologist’s point of view
Val replied to Myxie Tryxle's topic in Lore Discussion
No, it really does. He's claiming something is widespread where I live, and that's just not true at all outside of maybe - maybe - some backwoods inbred hicks (though I question whether they would know what a cotillion was). He's talking about my home and painting it in a negative light by making claims that have no basis in reality. Forgive me for being offended when my home, my people, and my culture are being lied about Far be it from me to deny someone a chance to indulge in righteous indignation, but you're off the mark, His point about accepting what's normal to you is still very much valid is what I mean. Also I'm from the south too, fuck the south. That's part of it. Another part is him saying that it's prevalent in many societies today, then he goes on to state something that happened to him in the south as an example. This is but a singular occurrence. I can assure you that it is not "prevalent" and most people you mention this to would think it's ridiculous. -

Alabama South 8-) Only state we can claim more inbred and worse than us is Mississippi. And they just declared confederate history month, so. I feel like we're suddenly winning. ...Until this state ultimately declares it too. -
Miqo’te Mating Strategies Explored: a biologist’s point of view

Yes, you would. If you were raised in a culture where your sexuality was not your decision (Orthodox Judaism for example) you would either gladly accept your duty to your family, or risk losing everything by challenging their decision. A Miqote's mating requirements are not far off from the arranged marriage structures present in many societies today. When I was little, I was taken to all kinds of play dates with a girl 2 years younger than me because our parents planned on having us establish a relationship through our lives and then one day marry. That's one of the ways Southern families arrange marriages. Unfortunately our parents had a falling out and the union was canceled (which is good because when puberty hit, it turned out I'm very gay) but I never questioned the idea that one day I was supposed to marry that girl. It was just a fact. My grandparents and great grandparents all had arranged marriages, and so would my mother have had she not been the rebel of the family and shut herself out of familial traditions for most of her life. Southerners are a little more like Miqote than flat arranged marriages in that we have things like Cotillions where all the young people are brought together in an oohlala fancy schmancy setting and sort of matched by our mothers. "Wouldn't little Timmy and Amanda make a lovely pair? They'll have a beautiful family if they can get along." Ultimately, these couples tend to fall in love or at least deep caring with time, and stay together for the rest of their lives. Uh...what part of the South are you from, exactly? Because I'm from the Deep South, too, and uh, I've never heard so much as a whisper of anything remotely approaching "arranged marriage." Yeah I'm pretty deep in the south and this is crazy -
You're welcome to RP with me anytime Though I'm usually afk in game, when I come back I try to check my messages and see what people said! I'd be happy to! It is looked forward to 8-)

Just keep in mind that if you want to be picky about the lore, when dropping the tribal name, it isn't just the apostrophe that's dropped--it's the whole letter. I've seen a ton of Miqo'te make their names something simple like "J'ohn" and "D'ave" and "W'endy" or whatever, but that's not how the naming conventions work. As Alderique pointed out above, dropping the tribal name would have them be called "Ohn," "Ave," and "Endy." An example of this is my own character, Val. He dropped his and is simply Val, whereas his tribal name is W'val.

I have to agree with Kellach here. To me, the VA is just atrocious and I can't stand it. It's better than some, but it makes me cringe every time I hear it. Part of it could be, like Kellach mentioned, that I think the writing/script they're given in general is pretty abysmal. iskipcutscenesbecauseihatethestoryandthevoiceactinginthemisawful

balmung [Event over!] "So... do you wanna buy some drugs?"
Val replied to Pahn Dotharl's topic in Chronicled Connections
If you want him to get involved in some less-than-savory things, I can offer an alt of mine that works for a mob/mafia-type thing :v they help peddle drugs and just take advantage of people. If he's really desperate, it could make for some entertaining RP! -
Hey guys! I was unable to be on the RPC/took some time from the game for a bit, but we're still around! If you're still interested, hit me up in game or via the RPC and I'll also be trying to find you guys! I'm still trying to get in touch with Jess'a as well, but the times just never seem to match up ;o;

I am suddenly reminded of the time that Faye and I ran not Aery, but the dungeon before that. I was tanking, she was healing, and we had this absolutely shit NIN that kept attacking the last boss during the transition you're supposed to take his wings out. We wiped three, maybe four times on it. Yes, we tried to explain to them that you have to swap to take out the wings. It didn't help. We even refused to move until they agreed and they still just attacked the boss. At this point I want to believe it was just a troll, but nah. The whole dungeon they were awful. I don't know how anyone expects anyone to help those kind of people You know, lmao, it was that dungeon not the Aery. I just remembered, "HEY WE KILLED A REALLY ANNOYING DRAGON." It was a Bard and he just...he kept running into the AoEs. We wiped over and over and over again. I kept trying to be helpful and encouraging but the Bard finally just dropped. We got a...I think it was a Ninja or a Dragoon, and one-shot the boss next pull. Haha we did the exact same. Finally just booted them, got another player, and oneshot the boss. In games when one person can make or break something, you really can only hold their hand so much before they, too, need to put forth some effort to get stuff done.

If you have made it to level 60, you are no longer a "new player" in my eyes. If you haven't figured out your buttons, or how not to stand in fire by then, there are problems that, quite honestly, I don't pay $16.99 a month to solve for you. Pretty much this. I don't mind helping people, but if people aren't willing to help themselves at that point then I really don't care to be around them, especially considering this game holds your hand from 1-50 and has other systems in place meant to teach you absolutely everything about it.

We've some some pretty interesting story lines going on currently, both in the FC and out! I find it humorous how so many characters just happen to cross one another that normally wouldn't during such things. Honestly, I've always craved non-linear RP that was just the sum of various characters being themselves and creating conflict without one of the parties fussing or complaining, and I think I finally have!

WoW started the trend of efficiency over social interaction with many of its systems because people would constantly complain about waiting in Westfall for an hour (or two, or three) to find a group for Deadmines. But no one forces people to use these systems. If you want to be social, you can still spam cities/zones/areas looking for a group. No one ever took that away. We, as people, inherently want things that are easier and therefore decide to use what's been given to us. Like you, though, I think I had a lot more fun in MMOs and created more of a bond when I had to look for dungeons in such a manner as opposed to one-offing them in a roulette and never speaking to the group again. I'll have to agree that I have had pretty few bad experiences in dungeons and whatnot myself VS the woes people complain about here. If something awful happens or I get someone crappy in a dungeon, I tend to just deal with it and move on. I don't really see the point or need to air out laundry on a public forum, but I suppose that's just my general way of not wanting to bother others or air out things openly

I think that's because MOBAs are a 40-minutes-or-more team combat that's actually decided in the first five minutes who is going to win. Source: something I read somewhere one time, ain't never played a MOBA You're not wrong. An incredibly small percentage of MOBA players will ever be spotlighted. Yes, you have an internet moniker, but the chances of you running into the same people after the hour-long match are slim to none, so why bother being nice in a competitive environment? Not to mention that if you're grouped with people trolling you or just being dumb, it can be frustrating as you know you've wasted an hour of your time. They keep trying to find ways to make the environment more friendly, but short of actually changing the entire design, I don't see how it will ever happen. I played League back in the day when it only had a handful of champions. When its community became shit, I bailed and went to Smite when it was still in beta. Now its community is equally as horrid, as is every other MOBA I've ever tried. At this point I just stay away. If I want someone to tell me (or others) how bad we are, I just spend a little time with Faye. She's Satan or something, or so people tell me.

Honestly, I have to agree with Warren. Everything you've said has been around constantly. I know (and was one of) the original WoW raiders that refused to use mods simply because they felt it was cheating. If the devs wanted attacks called out, they'd add it to the game naturally (and they eventually did, but having it so early on destroyed any sense of challenge). As for this game's community being MOBA-like, nah. I can't agree with that one bit. MOBA communities are horrid enough to keep me from ever bothering to play in them. You're going to have pricks wherever you go, but the design of the MOBA space in general tends to bring out the worst in people.

If this is the case, I would look to conjury for some influence since it uses aether from the environment rather than from yourself. Conjury is also not limited to the three elements it uses in-game, so there's no reason you can't use fire, lightning, ice (i honestly don't even remember what buttons to hit for this ability), or shurikens(???). If I decide to include these mechanical abilities IC, they'll be conjury instead of ninjutsu, though I don't see myself using them heavily. I imagine the Domans developed their own ways, so if you're a practitioner of ninjutsu as described in the game, you can flash some gang signs and make it happen. I think conjury/the practice thereof would definitely have some sort of influence considering eastern customs. The quest basically tells you that they believe their gods are in their surroundings and they use Mudra to borrow the aether/elements of those surroundings. Really, I don't think the characters should be limited to game mechanics. It just seems that conjury has their powers given to them by the elementals and the ninjas use the power of tupac to force/coerce the elements.
-
I like to be creative with it. The questline specifically states that you take the elements from the nearby surroundings. That being said, I added a bit of geomancy influence to it. Val can't absorb the mudra required for fire unless he's near a source of fire. He can't call a lightning strike down if he's indoors, but he can absorb the aether from the air around him. It puts a bit of a realistic spin on things, I think, to make it interesting. That being said, I think the combinations should allow for more than just the skills that we have. Certainly you have those to play on, but water + air = ice shards and things like that. It's just my personal portrayal and it makes it a bit more fun to me. People can RP it however they want, but on its own I think mudra would be pretty powerful and I like to give my characters limitations

We do! I'll look for you in game and send out an invite Right now, as I've said, there's not a lot of us and not an absolute ton going on. We're mostly facilitating RP for other people right now, but we could get together and do some random RP on the side as well sometime!

Argent Dawn EU, though I moved over to Defias Brotherhood until about mid-Cataclysm once the RP-PvP servers opened up. Oooohh! I had a lot of friends that played on Argent Dawn!

Val and this guy could go far together. In all honesty, welcome to the RPC The interactions with you have been great thus far!

Welcome to the game! 11 years ago? If I might ask, what server did you start on in WoW? I was on Silver Hand =D It looks like we followed a similar routine. I went to Warhammer, LOTRO, and played TSW for a little bit though I never actually RPed there. To be entirely honest, I usually give most MMOs a bit of a shot before I duck out >_o; as sad as I am to say it, Warcraft is what held my attention the longest and XIV has probably kept me here longer than any other aside from that. At any rate, it's great to see you here! Looking forward to seeing you around in game =)

Is your character open for killing/death? What about injury?
Val replied to LadyRochester's topic in RP Discussion
All of my characters are open to killing/death/injury at any time. I don't mind it. Some of them live pretty dangerous lives so I imagine it will come eventually, and I don't like the lack of risk that they simply can't be killed. So yeah, if someone wants to take Val out, they most certainly can. I'd be surprised if Melfice survives his current storyline, as well as other characters. There is always the option of revival, but that's something I don't take very lightly. It has to be big. It has to take effort. And it's probably going to be a one-off if it ever does happen.
