<-- oldish fart. Too tired to quote properly this morning: ExAtmos, yeah, we're on about the same page with the OOC stuff. My comment was more I keep seeing more pre-OOC planning of characters / etc. More info then I want to know, pre-scripting plot-lines, etc. What you're talking about has been around, for me, for as long as I can recall. On the subforums, I wonder if the new site could save filters. (aka don't show these tags, only show these tags) then we could get the best of both worlds. Visibility for those that want it, the ability to filter for those who don't want to see stuff that isn't theirs? On an earlier community site I helped maintain we had similar issues. We had a faction divide with one faction being far more active than the other. To attempt to deal with similar complaints we'd split up the forums into separate areas for each faction but it, in some ways, exasperated the problem. Folks would log in and see "There's 85 new posts for Faction A, and only 10 for Faction B. The site caters to Faction A." Maybe a good filtering system would alleviate both perceptions? I don't really know a good answer to it. I am hoping that if this other Mateus specific calendar gets rolling and they start curating the event feed for that server that it can become the application of record so to speak for Mateus events and also feed the new RPC's calendar. I'm really hoping it has the same level of success the Balmung calendar does in reaching varied audiences.

"That's my joy and too much OOC kills RP, IMO." This.... 1000x this.... Yeah, I've been around probably a bit longer, and I agree, I don't like doing RP on forums and the like. I do think forums are great for coordination, OOC lore discussions, getting the word out about events and as as public IC message board. (even 30 years ago [hell, I feel old now] we had a BBS / mailing list for those purposes for the two LARPs I was dealing with). I really can't do the pre-planned RP, I feel so lost and theirs this little voice in my head yelling at me for metagaming the characters. I could get on a soapbox about the death of the virtual world concept and our move towards the fixed vignette style of RP but that really begs another topic all together. Us living world folks are still out there. Don't despair too much. My last rant on it elsewhere brightened a few others to the concept, maybe... just maybe... our open world RP will blossom again. (I'm a hopeless optimistic)

Yeah, the lack of the calendar being in use here for Balmung is likely a bit my fault.... I've been poking on occasion Unnamed Mercenary on ways to get around that in the future. A good number of the calendar events I pull for the Balmung RP Calendar comes out of the events forum but they don't make calendar entries here because it's double work. Speaking of which, keep your eye out, there's a certain someone working on something for Mateus that isn't me. I've been tossing code snippits their way. I'm looking forward to seeing what comes of it.

Poke me at some point this weekend (erroch#5348 on discord if you don't see me about) if you can get me into the other discords we can see what we can propose about using them as an application of record for the directory listings.

*offers fistbump to Skae for being another old hat* It's not hard to do but discord is very noisy. People tend to do sentence length messages instead of full post length resulting in a lot of posts. It'd probably be better to record a days worth of chat logs from a channel and post them in a single html searchable post if you really want to go down that road. I do have some older code that does that, but I'd need to bring it up to date. (It doesn't respect deleted / edited messages and rich embeds break it) Discord's api can be found here: https://discordapp.com/developers

On Discord. Discord is more the IRC / Skype / other real time discussion group killer. It's really good for what it does. It's key benefits are it's stupid-simple to set up, easy to use, easy to get other people into it, and it removes the need for paying for voice server for most groups. It's also very likely that someone you want on your discord server is already on discord for something else so there's no "yet another product" problem. It is lacking in quite a number of ways and a large scale community tool, however. It lacks permanence. It's a pain to export content to a more permanent medium from. Discussions are mostly exclusive to who's on at the moment and are mostly limited to one per channel at a time. Event tracking. You need at least two third party tools to do this (a calendar and a relay bot) User tracking. (All you get, user ID and the name#1234 tag one of those requires a bot to acquire.) For most small groups this isn't much of a problem. You don't need to worry about permanence, and they're mostly TZ centric. The biggest advantage to a forum like the RPC is the permanence feature and the easy of copying your stuff to a different medium. That permanence allows people to participate in more of the discussions that happen off hour for them or even earlier in the week. On Discord (or IRC/Slack), said interesting topic has already been scrolled past and four or five other discussions may have happened since you were last online. With discord in trafficked channels "necroposting" becomes a matter of hours instead of months on heavily trafficked discord channels. That permanence thing also allows forum RP to happen between people that may not be around at the moment. (read: RP by mail) Anyway, TL;DR side of things, discord is nifty, but it's not a full solution to what a decent community needs, in my opinion.

On the other server RP Event calendars. I've attempted to help a number of people get started on a Mataus RP Calendar. I know at least two people are working on the infrastructure to handle the weekly posting, change tracking, etc like I have. I'd love to see a Mataus Weekly RP Event list and ones for other servers pop up. Sadly, I don't have the time to moderate / police / etc, another set of google calendars now the time to really build out my system to handle multiple ICS sources for different discords / etc. There's also still a lot of fiddly hands on time to prevent abuse that needs to be done every month, and that's with all of my old RP connections I can sent out to events I can't physically log in to confirm, etc. In the end, Nefzen and I saw a need and decided to do something about it to give back. I firmly welcome anyone else to do the same (hell, feel free to use the same formatting I do, or not, it's all good by me!) I guess I should also toss out my disclaimer that I'm in now way anything other then a generic user when it comes to the RPC. . I have other thoughts but I'll throw them into their own post.

That might not be a bad idea. One of my general rules of RP is everything must have a price of some sort. If they're protecting against something in particular, that should come at a price. Perhaps in your shielding of them, their projected aether based abilities are dampened a bit as well. At that point use of the new 'protection' comes as a choice instead of an 'always yes' thing. Meaningful choices make for good stories.

My take on spying in character. a.) don't do it unless you have a good IC reason to (this usually means you've interacted with the group before, or are hired by another group they're interacting with, etc.) b.) don't use game mechanics to hide yourself. Don't use the gatherer stealth skill, physically hide behind the tree. c.) poke folks to ask "Hey are you all really there ICly." if it's not a common public spot. (read: if you catch them in the wild at a campsite or some such.) d.) Emote. You need to give some indication that you're physically there and not someone idling around as a non-RPer. Jot things down, tilt your head or raise your eyebrows in time with something said. e.) Suck it up and deal with the repercussions if you're caught. I tend to prefer open / world RP to closed. I'm of the belief that closed "no one should overhear it" RP should be done in private locations, party or non-overhearable methods. It's a minimum impact on the open world and the immersion of others thing to me. Just really a polite thing to do when in public locations and you don't want your RP to be overheard/interactable with, or taken ICly. Open chatter in public places in public channels, to me, is a tacit invitation of interaction, otherwise why bother RPing in the open world? But I'm an old fart, so take it with a grain of salt. I grew up on the dreams of virtual worlds. Dreams which have largely been tossed to the wayside by the masses.

....I mean... What's sixty billion double dollars worth now anyway given inflation and all. Some crafters probably scoff at that amount these days. I'd suggest hititng up the event calendar and finding a few events to get your feet wet and interact with others. If he's just free from the bloodsands, there are a few fighters group things (The Grindstone on the weekends, and the Lominsan fight club on Monday nights for example). Good luck on the hunt for folks to RP with.
