It wouldn't be beyond reason to have someone spin up a Diku based mud on a virtual host somewhere and get a few people to create zones based on areas in FFXIV though. Could be an amusing little side project.

I have a notepad next to my computer that I keep track of things on. I tend to be age indiscriminate until someone pops a descriptive emote that states otherwise. Most people, I've found fall into the 'you see what you see' category. The outliers seem to be pretty descriptive about their non-obvious characteristics on first meeting someone. Take notes, it's a good habit to get into as it helps separate character vs player knowledge.

While I enjoy a good bout of pvp, I have problems with mechanical pvp, and it creeps into any heavy system based thing. I get very performance self-competitive when playing video games. Always pushing myself to do better. In mechanical pvp it's -really- hard for me not to play at my best. Narrative combat lets me have Erah'sae 'fail' more and in more interesting ways.

My personal read on this (which is a little speculative, so take it with between one and many grains of salt ) is that the beastmen often learn the common tongue to interact with others. ... You also have groups such as the Ashcrown Consortium that has been directly engaged in trade with the beastmen that may have been helping them to learn the common tongue. It seems in many cases they have little trouble communicating with outsiders these days. (See the SB fishing quests among other things) There are some further spoilery things you find out about that group and this topic by doing the quests that unlock once you've maxed all your ARR beast tribe reputations.

Markets are a bit cheaper but far higher velocity on Balmung. Housing's about the same on both. Balmung still has a bit (read: a lot) more publicly advertised open RP events. RP is RP wherever you find it. Lydia's got the right of it.

Welcome to FFXIV. As far as the health issues and what not, most folks will understand when you just don't have the spoons to deal with activities like this. A bit of a landmark event. The Balmung RP Discord Bot is now hosted by 225 distinct discord servers. Ye gods. This thing is far more popular than I realized. We may be having a small outage of service starting tomorrow 2017.07.31 due to an expected cut fiber line. I'm assured it won't be cut, but have you ever known a backhoe not to cut the fiber line? Esp when the sewage main being replaced goes right under it. Service should be restored within 24-72 hours if it indeed goes out. This will take the discord bot down for the duration. We're working on getting to each event in the system to vett them, we're having a bit of a delay in the refresh due to things like the sewage line backing up into the house and trees falling on stuff. (It's been one hell of a summer.) If you show up at an event and no one is there, please let me know and we'll get it looked into more closely and/or remove it. A number of groups canceled their events for SB and didn't bother letting anyone know, so we're playing the every two year catch up. Edit: Also the link shell has more or less been supplemented by the discord bot notifications. That and I'm hardly online to post them in the mornings and what not. Some folks use it to announce events but it's more or less deprecated at this point. This may change once Nefzen gets back into the swing of things, but I doubt it.

Tabletop RPers say exactly the same thing and have the same problem. Everyone wants rules that "get out of the way" in some form or another. There was a table top system I played some years ago called Primetime Adventures that was more focused on collaborative storytelling in an episodic fashion as opposed to a 'combat system'. It might be a bit more of what you're looking for Kismet? If I have the time I'll try and hunt down my copy of the book. They do have a PDF for sale relatively cheaply though.

I've had a day, (sewage backing up into the master bathroom will do that...) so I'm going to possibly come off wrong and probably ramble a bit. If so oh well, I tried... So I see I took your initial statement wrong, and it's not 'villain' it's random criminal RP you're looking to inflict upon others. Here's the thing... One person's 'a little fun' often ends up being annoying for other people who are involved in other things. Often it's not spice if it's not consensual, it's irksome. It's cliche. If you want to give a protagonist something to do, talk to them. Become a proper antagonist. Just remember in character actions bear in character repercussions and have a grand time. On the repercussions, there is only so many times you can say "Have your night in jail for x crime" and then have someone do it again before you just... give up. You mention WoW as being more empathetic... I can tell you on WoW, it wasn't so much empathy on both servers I played on for a decade... it was us getting jaded. It got bad enough to where we just started ignoring it. Things like "Oh, someone's poisoned the bar's drinks again. Good thing we have that decoy stash." or "Oh, someone's burned the orphanage down again... does anyone even use that thing anymore?" became stock responses. I really wish I was kidding. The guard guilds more or less collapsed because of the annoyance that is random criminal rp that never learns. If you want to play a little 'beneath the law' there are ways to do it. The thread is full of them.

He got a great deal on it at a fundraiser for the Adders. Boom. Done. That's kind of defeating the purpose of leaving it open ended. Until it's defined it's full of possibilities. It could have been bought, it could have been salvaged, could be one given to him by a friend. All sorts of things it could be until it's defined. Could be the property of someone else's character weaved into backstory later that doesn't exist yet. There's a power, as a storycrafter, with leaving things undefined.

To be honest, I think we lost more from the EU folks bailing to Omega then we did to Mataes. Events I stick my nose into in US Prime are still rather heavily populated. There's a lot of random walk up RP I see in the main cities. The most recent one I attended was crescent's beach bash which had, at a loose count, around 100 people turn up. I don't really have a good estimate as we had model culling was going on. While we've lost some events on the calendar I think most of those were more from people shutting down for the expansion than leaving the server. I'm starting to see more of them show back up and new ones get added as well. Balmung is still going rather strong and most of the usual folks are still around.

It hasn't happened yet. They're just digging up my front yard on Monday or Tuesday as we have a break in the main drain pipe, sewage backing into the house, etc... The fiber line goes directly over the sewer main so double the fun...

There is a saying among a certain school of roleplayers... "You can post-rationalize anything." While you can pre-apply reasons for a bunch of stuff in your apartment there is a certain utility in leaving a lot undefined until you need it. Those stray books, they're whatever you happened to have needed your character to read last night to enhance the story currently happening. The chess pieces, gift from an old friend or something found. I've got a mix of things with pre-applied logic behind them and things I've got no idea on until they'll be referenced in Erah'sae's apartment. There's a map table with chess pieces and a stuffed chocobo on it that represents routes for his courier gig. There's a carpenter's workbench because he is an IC carpenter. The books next to his bed? The fact that his bed is twin adder standard issue? No idea, if/when they become relevant I'll come up with something. There are vague ideas but I haven't needed to define them yet. This really works for RP because the minutiae of our real houses change with a good bit of frequency, most houses / apartments are fairly static once you find a certain aestetic you like.

Just a heads up. Due to RL sewage issues, my front yard is being torn up as early as Monday. This will probably end up severing the fiber line to my house as runs above the main sewage line. This will be out for a currently in-determined amount of time until work can be completed and C-Spire can fix the issue. I should add to my previous post, that that sort of method acting requires some care and a really solid sense of 'self' to prevent bad bleed over. My characters are just that, characters. The terms 'avatar', 'muse' (ye gods, I hate that term), or even person is way too strong in my opinion. It also requires a bit of a 'cool down' period after playing the character to let reality reimpose itself. To let lingering emotions fade, and the like. (Especially any violent ones which a good conflict will bring.) This is not entirely unlike the small period of disorientation felt after finishing a really, really, good book.

Personally I've almost always played male characters (and I'm a male). I've tried and I can't convincingly pull off a female persona. I don't really care one way or another about the genders of the players of other characters though. I do have an amusing story about a friend who played a female character back in his wow days. The character was subtle, non-violent, more or less the 'everyone's loving second mother' type of persona. Apparently he played the female part so well that he had trouble getting people to believe he was a guy behind the keyboard some years later. I was over at his house when someone started sending him tells about particular female problems. He replies that he's a guy and didn't have the proper body parts to be of help, but they persisted saying 'she could drop the charade, they all knew the player was a girl. it's alright. and included even more detail'. He looked over to his wife with this horrified embarrassed expression on his face and said "I have no idea how to handle this." She took over the keyboard and stated with "I'm such and such's RL wife. You really need to get that looked at by a doctor." After that, they were more inclined to believe he was a lesbian until he finally got on voice coms. Much embarrassment and a few accusations of using a voice changer followed.

I think we're getting a bit off the original topic, but it's a good topic. Maybe we should spin up thread to discuss this part further? The original poster was asking on 'random open rp villainy' where we're delving into the dangers of differing views from popular opinion and resulting antagonistic responses. That sort of antagonistic behavior over alternative viewpoints is society though, and it shows in game at times. The Ishgarde's story line has some good examples of this too over the peace with the dragons. Even the main characters have some issues with radical viewpoints (or even simple ones. There's some trash talk about pirates from a certain scion.) While the world of Eorzea is neutral at a high level, and that shows a lot in the MSQ, at that level you're dealing with people who have continuous external threats to deal with as well. This is a strong unifying force that causes many 'sins' to be overlooked. (I could go on about how this sort of thing also works in the real world but that'd delve into topics best left off public forums these days.) Once you get to the common folk, you start to see the polarization show up again. Ul'dah with the Ala Mhigans. Ishgarde with Asyale's followers, etc. I do it's valid for characters to coalesce around like minded viewpoints and reject those they find offensive. That is probably more the core of why we don't see more RPers taking more extreme stances. You really need a base to work with to cause that sort of conflict and not have your roleplay just dry up. To get more varied viewpoints someone has to be the first to create a base for that 'different view' and get others to buy into it as well. A good example of this I've recently seen a group of Garlean sympathizers Rping about doing just that. They have established a group to freely RP those characters in while interacting in the world and causing other people teeth-grinding headaches. There hasn't been much dogpiling of them (there was once I saw in the middle of Gridania proper... that's kind of to be expected though.)
