Oh my red flags... where do I start..... 1.) Not using all of the letters. If people are talking in shorthand like we're on pagers in the 90's. I left that decade behind a long time ago. I can't stand it. It is all I can do to not be vitriolic about the habits and walk away. 2.) More OOC chat than IC chat. - I'm an immersive RPer, I tend to ignore OOC almost all together when I'm really able to get IC. If someone between lines is discussing the latest youtube video or how awseome other event in public channels while RPing, I'll probably pass from anything serious. I don't mind slow typing, but waiting 10 minutes because someone won't actually pay attention... no. 3.) More OOC chat than IC chat. - Round 2. Someone who wants to discuss the potential outcomes of everything OOCly or wants to chat OOCly along side RP. When I RP I want to forget myself, and let the character go, if we're discussing everything OOC between lines of IC text, you're going to get more me than the characters. That sets off my self-metagaming flag and I won't enjoy it. I want to have my character be able to say the wrong things, make mistakes, be blatantly wrong and the like. 4.) Drama mongers. Nuff said. On one of the earlier topics, folks that leave mid RP, or only do small scene things. Sadly, that's me for the most part. In big crowds, I have about 30 minutes before the chat scroll starts inducing major headaches. My fiancee can't either. It's a bit saddening but It might have something to do with getting older, but we just can't swing the chat spam like we used to. Filtering the chat down to party doesn't really help because I feel horrible about missing people trying to interact with me in /say or what not. It also makes me twitch since I'm of a school that anything I say ICly should be audible and able to be acted upon by those that would be able to hear it, especially if I'm not expecting them to. Also, sometimes the discord bot is exploding (or people are exploding about the bot) and I have to take care of it. (Or the six year old decides to defy bedtime, I'm not sure which requires more mid-RP work than the other...)

The bot now supports categories I just rolled out an update for the discord bot that now supports channel categories and should now be a little bit more sound against discord meddling with the channel types / hierarchy in the future. Carry on and enjoy! ~ Erah’sae / Erroch

Discord broke the bot if you use categories. Discord broke how the bot iterates channels with it’s ‘categories’ update. If you have channels in categories, the bot won’t be able to find them to send it’s messages until I can sort out something. Fun. I’ll try and get it fixed this weekend.

I knew I forgot to go into something in my post. Thanks for bringing this up. There's a line with that. Most of us are on one side. Urianger is often on the other. Going overboard on the esoteric or eclectic for a character dialect is fun at times. If you do though, just be consistent with it. It can give a bit of a hook to draw some folks into interaction with your character while they try and sort the eccentricities. As long as it is consistent the regulars you interact with will come to learn the turns of phrase and won't even have to think about it anymore. Initial joke aside, I love how they handle Urianger. He's an example of excessive eclecticism (does that word work for language theory?) but they make him work through consistency. edit: one day I'll quit botching this system's quote structure...

But yeah, it does mean to introduce even if not really spoken that way often, but it's just an odd thing. Yeah, I wouldn't worry much about it. It was just more a 'be careful' point than anything else. I've gotten burned by doing this myself at least a couple of times. Edit: And there I go throwing 'yeah' in twice when I quickly type something out. Heh. Yay for repetition and self cliches!

Ye gods, your spoiler text is why Nefzen and I decided to pay to move to Balmung in the first place. That drove her off Cactaur, except it was also tell spam. That said, I'm hearing pretty decent things, Mateus for several of my friends there still feels like a 'small town' instead of a 'big city'. It's easier to see repeating folks in open world RP rather than having a population overload where you can't remember who is who.

For the vocabulary while reuse happens, it's not necessarily a bad thing. You'll find, if you look closely, that there are speech patterns in most people's dialog. Our characters should have speech patterns just like regular people. They will have their phrases they go to by default quite frequently. While not using the same phrase thrice may seem more interesting I'd suggest avoiding it unless the there is some reason for the alternate word/phrase usage. As far as expanding yours the best way I can think of involves two things. a.) which has been stated a lot. Read. Read read read read. Read things you're not familiar with and try to find authors from a variety of cultures. a.) Immerse yourself in different communities. I'd suggest doing this more in real life then in game if you can. Go hit up some events you normally wouldn't. Drop into a museum or a free art show. Maybe go help out for an afternoon in a soup kitchen. Go there in person, talk to people and pay attention to not just what they say, but how they say it. It's literary research! As an aside, beware of the thesaurus for it sometimes lies. I'm going to pick on you a little here. Don't take it personally it's just because you gave the perfect example and I'm too lazy to find another one. " I've used a website that provides a word each day that I figure I could inoculate(thanks for that one merriam webster lol) more interesting vocabulary into my character's speak. " While the online dictionaries and thesaurus give literally definitions they often leave out the contextual usages of said word. For example the use of 'inoculate' where pertains to the mind is regarding the hardening against or biasing towards concepts and ideals instead of something like adding new facts or vocabulary words. Ex: You want to inoculate yourself against the habit of reusing the same word or phrase.

As a reminder, this was a three month old dead horse of a topic until 30 minutes ago. Almost everything that could be said on this has been said to the point of exhaustion. I'd suggest we do more forward looking than debating what is now, effectively, history?

Just making sure this stays in the 'recent' list for a bit longer. It's a good location, and a decent plot for accessibility. Any FC with aspirations of running regular events would be well worth looking into this. Yeah, there's a bit of a headache of shuffling people between FC's but this is a pretty good bit of work being cut out from even just buying a house evacuated in the kugane rush. (airships are a pain, both building and leveling them) Good luck to whomever tosses their hat in.

I've got to back up Unnamed. Always treat everything 'evidence' wise as suspect and use your best judgement. Faking chat logs / screen shot chat has been a thing for at least two if not three generations of MMO's now. It does make me wish there were some actual proper chat logging in the game though. With this 'screenshot' / active 'cut and paste' only logging it's hard for the other side to contest data as well. Feh.

Minor Discord Bot Update (0.9.8.1) Added an “&purge x” command which removed then last x messages from the current channel. Both the bot and the user need the Manage Messages permissions in the channel for this to work.

I am not saying it was legacy code... Balmung RP Discord Bot version 0.9.7 But it was legacy code. So, I started writing the bot back in earlier days of Discord. The platform’s grown and changed as lot and since a lot of stuff kept working, I hadn’t really gotten around to changing a lot of the underlying code. Well, something broke in my dealing with deleted channels, and that in turn broke other things like the daily event feed, etc. Long and short, the bot’s been updated to handle this (and other unforeseen eventualities) Along with this, I’ve robustified the thread handling on the bot so it should better handler larger volumes of messages with fewer slowdowns. Dealing with the Google Calendar API is still ‘slow’ until it’s cached, but everything else is a bit snappier.
