I got a postponement of the meeting I'm waiting on so I'm glad I can respond to this. Immersion is one of those terms that gets thrown around a lot and I don't think most people really understand what it means. For some it just means RPing free of distraction. For me to become 'immersed' in RP is kind of like method acting. It's something I haven't been able to indulge myself with because I have too many constant real world distractions to keep me from falling into a character that closely. >> How do you create the line between IC and OOC if you are truly "immersed"? For me, this being like method acting, you leave yourself behind and put yourself in the character's position. You let yourself feel instead of just watch. Yes, there's a ton of bleed over because you're making yourself feel what the character is feeling, and going through a lot of it as you're creating a rather direct emotional attachment to what the character is going through. While doing this I tend to completely cut off OOC communication except for the bare necessities. (read: I'll probably send a tell before doing something like trying to stab someone's hand, etc to make sure it's ok.) It is difficult to keep OOC influences away from the character, but this is not really any different from regular day to day RP as well. >> Do you play in 1st person view to maintain your immersion? Not really. I sometimes zoom in to check to make sure I should be seeing what I think my character is seeing. Sometimes I've zoomed in to help prevent self-meta-gaming. It is really impractical since you have a very narrow viewpoint in 1st person mode compared to a real world 160 degree scope and in game 1st person point of view is often a 80-90 degree cone. >> Do you declare that you are "immersed" to others during RP interactions, or is it something participants should just pick up on? No, not in the least to either question and no one really needs to pick up on it. If someone I'm RPing with is baragging me with OOC tells about the scene or their actions I'll often just suggest "lets leave it in play" or "let the scene play out as it will, do as you want" to keep it from spilling over into OOC too far. >> Is the etiquette for interacting with an "immersed" player/character different than the etiquette for interacting with an avatar? No? They may ask you to just stick to IC interaction, but that goes for non-immersed people too sometimes. There's no grand line or change of rulesets between the styles of textual character acting we call RP.

((other rather interesting stuff from Valance cut, I'm just not quoting it all because it's a long but well constructed post. Go read it.)) The problem with comparing this to open RP is open RP is there to get noticed. If petty crime open RP happens and doesn't draw a response, what is the point other then chest beating? Once a direct action draws a response, a story begs a resolution. Lolorito is a grand example of a 'good' kind of antagonist to play. He rarely acts overtly, he manipulates situations to his own end. If he stays subtle there'll be a lot of grumbling about him but nothing actionable. Because he doesn't drop to the level of 'stupid evil' he doesn't warrant a direct punitive response. In fact he's positioned himself to where a direct response would probably have the actor fall on the wrong side of the law. Lolorito is the best sort of example of a RP-able antagonist. I wish I'd have thought to mention him in my earlier post.

Now the brass tacks. Given the IP stated this was for 'public random RP' you have a conundrum. It sounds like you are wanting public random antagonistic RP. There are many different types of antagonists and all of them have differing levels of issues when faced with the public. The most banal of these are what my circle has started to dub "stupid evil". There's another saying that goes along with this "stupid gets you dead." These are your more cartoon character levels of evil. "I'm going to burn down your bar" or "I'm going to beat up these people." That sort of level of banal evil has an issue; there is no way to sustain this without invalidating the stories of the 'good guys'. If an antagonist of this sort keeps showing up, getting caught, showing up again to rinse / wash / repeat, the only real purpose of this sort of antagonist is to portray the incompetence of the protagonists, or the failings of a system. Both of these eventually end up with the protagonists becoming more and more harsh in an attempt to permanently resolve the story or ignoring the antagonist as if they don't exist. Most 'random open RP' villainy, sadly, ends up falling into the above category. To use Gegenji's 'overwhelming counter response' example of nicking someone's gil pouch in the quicksand getting extreme level so of counter play, this is absolutely expected. If you're at at the mall, and someone points and yells at someone running off with "He stole my purse!" you can expect, at the least a good portion of people to get involved if there's no real reasonable risk of personal harm. In MMO's you have the added issue that most players are well seasoned combatants so have less fear of personal harm (for whatever reason). To not attempt to assist would be to break character for them. You kind of have to plan around stuff like this. To really put people on about this, you need to exert a level of OOC control. The simplest example of this is to plant your own target instead of picking someone random. An example using the same set up that could work. RP out bumping into them. Apologizing, what have you, maybe spill your drink on yourself, as a distraction / excuse for rushing off. Give it a good 5-10 minutes and then have that person declare their coin-purse has been stolen. Some people will put two and two together, but you're gone. Repeat this process several times with other OOCly willing participants and you may start getting a reputation and congratulations, you're now in a good place to start a story for any who are interested in investigating but without being caught blatantly red handed. Eventually the antagonist would need to get caught, or the goods returned somehow or the story serves no purposes but to distract from RP already going on. Then you have the subtle evils / villainy. These are beautiful. These tent to be more 'supporting cast' than antagonists. There are several FC's which entirely fall into this area. Again, Gegeenji mentioned something about this as well. These are the manipulators, the 'fixers' the 'problem solvers'. From your Rumpelstiltskins, to your politicians, to your corrupt Yellow Jackets, these are those that enhance others stories but with a twist or an unexpected cost. Something to further their own gains while not directly acting themselves. It has it's own world of issues esp today but I'm out of time for the moment so I'll have to deal with that later.
-
I think the best way someone put it about playing an antagonist. (Alignment really doesn't matter, you've just got protagonists, antagonists and supporting casts for stories) An antagonists's purpose in a story is to enhance the story of the protagonist. There are groups where the protagonists are 'villains' but they're generally publicly low key, out of the public eye villainy. Their internal stories tend to revolve around achieving goals or avoiding the heroes (antagonists) etc. I'll post again later on some of the types of issues with types of antagonists in open RP in a bit, but I've got to dart off to work first and get things settled.

balmung Looking to Support Roleplay, perhaps more.
Erah'sae replied to azahana's topic in Chronicled Connections
Support characters and facilitators are awesome for role-play purposes. That's the niche I love to play in myself. I don't really want to be the hero/protagonist or antagonist for a story, but I love enhancing roleplay or throwing people at one another to fill RP rolls. Granted now I'm mostly doing it from an OOC sense. I wish you luck in your search for a good fit. I'll let you know if I hear something come up. My usual go-tos for the more mercenary type stuff are currently still getting their SB fixes sorted at the moment but are coming out of it. -

About the only pre-arranged romatic RP I've done was with my OOC SO with one exception and that was still a RL friend. We designed characters that worked well together, and worked romantically, but never really made that the focus of their RP. Romance was just something that kind of was implied / expected most of the time.. It freed us up from dealing with others focused on relationship based RP because our characters were already committed. It also gave a brilliant excuse to duck out of scenes. It also helped when that we were both the type to look at our characters and going "What can we do to these poor sods now!" and then when said atrocity was surmounted, we had that close partnership between them to play out the coping and resolution. Now, allow me to turn towards a more 'beardy' discussion on this for a moment. (It's a technical term) In the end we all play for a more or less similar reasons. To change the way we feel, either through accomplishment, to avoid something, to indulge ourselves in something. Maybe to make sense of things on a small scale when we can't do that with the rest of the world. We achieve this in so many ways it's beyond counting. Each of us through different things. We all change how we feel in different ways. Some by climbing an infuriating tower; by punching things in savage raids; perhaps by weaving an intriguing storyline or getting that perfect screenshot. Maybe even something as simple as derailing Kugane shout into puns about tea. Maybe even in exploring romance in a virtual setting. How we all change how we feel based on what desires and needs. I'm not going to go into analyzing what might be the case with these posts. It may be something as simple as not wanting to deal with that sort of situation coming up on the fly in their RP and dealing with anxiety and drama there? Maybe the satisfaction of coming home, logging in and knowing that they have someone there to RP with? There are as many causes and answers as there are grains of sand. In the end it's no more or less valid then shaping a character to fit a particular concept or FC nor then logging in to grind a craft skill to 70 or what have you.
-
You could literally be doing anything. It really depends on the character themselves. If they have a job, it could be work. If they have family, something could have come up with family. It could even be as simple as their chocobo sprained an ankle while they were in Tailfeather or some other out of the theater location. For an added bonus, perhaps poke a few folks in your fc/group/etc and see if there's something plot wise that needed to be handled off screen. Maybe your character was off taking care of that, and then you have a hook to get back into things?

I am so glad I'm not the only one that doesn't have the tag on most of the time because the tag itself makes me twitch. (That and I forget to turn it on) To answer previous stuff: Forum posts often have these little tags like "(open)" as we see in several threads on this forum. For people really wanting it to be closed except for a group, there's often a disclaimer stating as such or a "[closed]" in the topic. You can give your thread context and control the venue in which it is shown. Things in world, well, RP interaction is why we're on a RP server, isn't it? There are so many other private avenues available for private RP (party / whisper / fc chant / linkshell / etc) but only one in game for public RP. In my opinion the responsibility is on the speaker to limit their venue appropriately to where they wish it to be responded to. If someone is going to talking / acting ICly within earshot of others they are putting their /say and /emotes into the public space and should expect others in the same public space to respond accordingly. This is how organic roleplay works. This is how you create a living, breathing world for our stories to interact in. If a private/public conflict arises, the solution should be to politely inform that this wasn't meant to be public RP, and then to take the conversation to one of the many readily available private channels. It is a far simpler thing and far less restrictive of a thing to do that rather then to restrict all others from interaction in a public venue.

You can use the share button on the PS4 controller to share a screenshot to a twitter or facebook account alternatively save it to a USB device. I think you can save it to the phone as a 'usb' device and then upload it to whatever image host you desire from there. -

Also add to all of the above by a quote in the MSQ where the NPC asks another NPC to practice in Conjury and Thaumaturgy as the basis for Red Magic. There is no specific mention of Black Magic or Succor at all. It might hold up as not being a product of the two banned magics on a mechanical level.

Even those got a little easier to justify given the Red Mage story. There were survivors of Mhach and Amdapor in Gyr Abania. It's feasible that others survived as well that still practice the White or the Black besides those that decided "we're going to cross train now".

How is my name not Lore Abiding? I'm tired of being told it isn't.
Erah'sae replied to Mother's topic in Character Workshop
What your character decides to call herself is what your character decides to call herself. Maybe she just had parents that had a thing for kitsune? If anyone complains, tell them exactly that and to take it ICly. There shouldn't really be a debate over it it's lore abiding because in the end, it doesn't matter. As an example we have some really screwed up names in the real world that are no more or less valid. Just be prepared for some IC push back about the name at that point. -
He's the last 'traditional red mage' but he's been going around taking apprentices. He tells you of one he previously trained and he picked up another apprentice after the main character. Who's to say once the cat is out of the bag, more don't follow? (Note: I have not finished the red mage story quests, mine is only level 67)

One thing that makes them a bit more immersive is if you don't emote your thoughts like I've seen a few people do. Show don't tell is a grand mantra to go by when emoting for the Qestir. Sometimes you might need to be a lot more nuanced in your emotes to give subtle queues to convey meaning. Some of the most interesting interactions with a Qestir may be when the others get the wrong idea of what you're trying to convey. Chalk this up to the cultural divide perhaps? This does bring some interesting questions though. There is a fate involving a Qestir merchant and another Au Ra who short changed them at the market. To sort out the price for something one would assume they have a method of conveying this? Was there anything said about the method? (This may be visually represented in the market area but I can't log in right now to check.)
