We've had a convergence of societies and cultures over the last few decades in Eorzea. It could be something as simple as their parents decided he deserved better then the Miqo'te stereotypes that a traditional name would have given and decided to break the mold, just like they're doing. Maybe start a new thing. They make get some flack for it ICly, because it's not a standard name. But that's kind of to be expected a bit. People in the real world get similar flack for odd names as well, even if it doesn't happen that frequently in polite conversation.

Anyone else have "combat RP macros"?
Erah'sae replied to Arashin Kujqai's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
My one big request on these, is please don't make them noisy, and please actually do them in emotes instead of party chat. Flavor is great, but noisy spammy macros are a good way to ensure I don't heal someone until they turn off. -
Ye gods, how does one actually farm these trust rewards? They seem to go up painfully slow. My Xon is only at 380 attack and he's my hardest physical hitter currently. Zyrus is doing much better at 495 magic, but I got his TMR more or less free from the Bahamut raid.

I even hit actual queues on Cactaur on this one. Though Nald didn't crash there. I'm not sure what was up last night, but it decidedly wasn't just Balmung centric. Cactuar's on Aether with Balmung and Gilgamesh so that was most likely a contributor. Probably the same thing we'll see in 2 weeks. Yeah, I'm somewhat expecting it. Though from the last housing debacle, I know Cactaur operated well enough while Balmung exploded horribly, so I really wasn't expecting it. This was the first real test of the new servers as well, hopefully they learn a bit from analyzing what happened.

Faerie, Lich, Mataeus, and Ultros all seem to have upcoming RP communities. There are smaller communities on a few other servers as well. Toss a feeler out in the Making Connections forum (I think this is the right place) with what you're looking for, RP wise, and see what gets a hit.

Holy thread necromancy, batman! But anyway.... Yeah, I use minions in RP. They're there in game, might as well react to them just like we do with chocobos, characters, mobs, and anything else. Hell, I use Eurus, Erah'sae's chocobo, more then I use the actual character in some scenes.

Just noticed this thread. I started playing right at the tail end of the Ifrit raid. Just long enough to go "Well, Y'sholta would have been nice." Maybe I'll pull her with this titan raid. Now dolphining along with Xon and Zyrus and a Minfilia who I can't six star. (Hopefully her limited upgrade items come back with Titan). Currently have a six star Xon as the companion. Hit me up if you need a 100% paralyze or his loot bonus.

It's kind of like out in the real world though, if you think about it. There are always 'events' and what not to go to, but the big places to meet new folks outside of 'events' tends to be the taverns/bars/clubs. Outside of events, that (and the internet) tends to be where you get introduced to other social circles and find other things to do and make new friends at. Also like in the real world, a lot of people are timid about approaching other people. We've, as a people, kind of social engineered ourselves into a corner with that, but that's a soapbox I don't need to get on. I do really love the concept of a living, breathing, world, but without some incentive, it's hard to create a need to just be between places. This is especially true with the mechanics of FFXIV where we just teleport everywhere. The only ways to really counteract stuff like this is to grab a friend, and go out in the world, RP tag on, and vocally RP. Not just with each other, but RP at other people. (The friend is important, you need someone to RP off of when other's aren't biting.) You'll probably be surprised at who responds instead of just running off. Nefzen and I had a lot of luck with this on our alts. We -walked- everywhere, and RP'd at just about anyone who crossed our paths. We asked players about where quest mobs we were looking for, or what was over that next hill. We feigned ignorance about most of what we, as players, knew of the game world to give people something to do/contribute when interacting with us. It was a lot of fun seeing everyone who'd drop their quest grinding to talk to us about trivial things like "where the best place to find limestone deposits" were.

One other thing. The calendar now correctly supports things like "Last Tuesday of the Month" so for those of you I've had resubmitting each month to get around that, just submit with a recurrence next time or send a 'change request' in and I'll get it sorted.

This year thus far has been like someone has invited Old Man Henderson into my personal RL plotline. Well... not quite that bad. This, however, has been limiting my coding time. If you'd like to toss a bit of support our way, there's both the Patreon account here: (link) I need to get something set up for a proper one off tip jar. Right now Nefzen's still works. I just have to remember to bother her about it. Thanks for the continued support, and for those observing Memorial Day today: o7 ~ Erah'sae Zhwan Have an event you want to put on the Calendar? You can also throw in more problems / resentment towards Ala Mhigan refugees due to the whole trying to invade Gridania bit as well. As Stormblood draws nearer on the horizon, this has definitely been a commonplace sentiment that I've been trying to abolish. It's actually fanon. Justifiable fanon, if your character is the type to hold WWII against modern day Germans, but ultimately... this sentiment is neither represented nor referenced by any NPC anywhere in 1.0, 2.0, or 3.0. In fact, the only time any NPC blames the Autumn War for Ala Mhigan prejudice, it's an Immortal Flame soldier claiming that the reason Ala Mhigans hate Ul'dahns is because of the Autumn War. Ahh you're right on that. I got the time frames mixed up with the Autumn War which was, now that I've looked it up a bit over 100 years previous to the calamity. I had in my head that it was a lot more recent. I can also see the Calamity and other Garleanian events leading up to it as a big buffer over any resentment over the Autum War. Something like the Calamity does cause a huge unifying influence.

What about all the Miqo'te claiming Midlander names?! For Keepers Males you can probably treat this as them being exposed to other races. Since they don't really have names of their own, just their mother's name plus a number suffix, they may take on more common names as an assertion of their identity in this new found, liberating, social context?
-
It's a bit more complicated than that. Ala Mhigan refugees initially showed up in Gridania and Coerthas, and both cities closed their gates to them altogether. When they came to Ul'dah, they were told they could stay, but they were denied citizenship, employment, and provisions. The only work that was initially offered them was sex work. Ul'dah's unemployment problem was then exacerbated tenfold with the coming of the Adventurer movement, which began putting many commonfolk out of business across the city-states. Many Ala Mhigans began setting up settlements in the sultanate lands or moving into run down places like Silver Bazaar. Because no one wanted them there because Ul'dahns viewed them as worthless because they had no money, many merchants and consortiums attempted to bulldoze the areas they had set up camp to make room for mansions and plantations for Ul'dah's most wealthy. You can read more about Ul'dah's treatment of the Ala Mhigans here. You can also throw in more problems / resentment towards Ala Mhigan refugees due to the whole trying to invade Gridania bit as well.

discussion Your thoughts on jump potions?
Erah'sae replied to Parth Makeo's topic in FFXIV Discussion
I'm rather liking these, to be honest. My only twitch (edit: not really a complaint) about the jump potions is that there should be some in game tidbit where they give you the basic summary of the storyline or the class story. Maybe give the tome to a version of the Wandering Bard who's sitting in all your starter towns. Bard: "Ahh, I was wondering when you'd come around for a drink. So let me make sure I've got everything right..." Queue 15 minute summary cutscene here. I'll probably get one of each just to poke around on another RP server... Really though, missing a lot of the story is shooting oneself in the foot. The game really comes into it's own through it. There's a lot of lore and other tidbits you can pick up along the way. I have more of a feeling that the people that will skip the MSQ arent' the same ones to really care about it. -
If SE was to designate an RP server, would you move?
Erah'sae replied to ExAtomos's topic in RP Discussion
Given that WoW seems to have completely failed in enforcing that, I severely doubt SE would be able to. I'd rather stay on a server with my friends where I can speak freely if wanted. They actually do throw the ban hammer quite hard on people who harassed roleplayers. Only places it was questionable was RP-PvP server due to you technically signing up for PvP as well. If only they were consistent on that.... We watched Earthen Ring fall apart due to fallout from in game harassment by both roleplayers and otherwise. Including hostile takeover of in game channels, infiltrating guilds to look the guild bank, and the like. I have seen more anti-harassment action on FFXIV in the last year then I have over a decade of playing on WoW. They're usually pretty prompt in response too from personal experience, especially if sexual harassment or hate speech gets thrown around as long as you're civil with the report. -
The Importance of Consolidating RP on Balmung and Having One RP Hub
Erah'sae replied to Sig's topic in RP Discussion
I think we actually petitioned this to the RPC before 2.0 launched. It never took off, sadly, and we were told "all the RPers will be on Balmung so there's no point splitting". At the same time, we had no EU datacenters, and by the time we got them most of us decided to stay. And then, well, this week. One thing pushing an EU centric server is the increase in network latency from many EU locations to the current US West coast servers. This makes some PvE activity a bit on the tricky side. (Benidiction was a pain when one didn't have a latency spiking up to 400ms) Given how many people participate in multiple sides of the RP / PvE / PvP trifecta you might see some serious push towards an EU datacenter group if they get pings down to sub 100ms. -

The Importance of Consolidating RP on Balmung and Having One RP Hub
Erah'sae replied to Sig's topic in RP Discussion
Just back up Unnamed on this. Hi, I'm an enterprise software architect. My job is to design the parts that run on the sort of stuff Unnamed is watching. There are ways where one could conceivably load-balance the game better then it currently is but you might end up with a solution where you have the old 'instanced areas' we had in HW launch constantly. (read: the death knell of open world RP) or you'll end up with queues to enter zones. In either case to do it well would probably require a general retooling of FFXIV's server architecture all around. There is a misconception that you can just throw more server resources at a problem, but people who believe that don't really understand the perils/difficulty of parallelism and multi-threading. If you really want to know more, go look for the articles CCP has published on this issue for EvE Online and why the core of that game runs single threaded. It's something that generally effects almost all 'Massively Multiplayer' online games. Back to the original topic of 'should' or 'should not' try and consolidate everyone. Really, Balmung isn't what -everyone- wants. Some people want that 'small town' feel where everyone matters. You're never going to find that on Balmung, ever. Balmung is like strolling into New Orleans. Generally full of good southern hospitality but you're just this person in a sea of people. If you want that small town tight knit community, that's not Balmung. You may find some within Balmung, yes, but that's not the server as a whole. I think if people want to find that more cozy, intimate community in small groups instead of massive RP hubs, don't discourage them. Both can survive on their own. What happens with the server lock, we won't know until it happens or doesn't. There's no real use bickering about if's. We just go back and forth over "What if they do?" "Well, what if they don't?" That horse is thoroughly living up to the name "old glue" at this point. Same thing for if badgering SE to get an RP server designation will provide results. "They might!" "They probably won't!" You get a lot of bandwagoning both ways on a bunch of assumptions of outcomes here and both sides just feed each other because they have to be 'more right' or some such. I don't really get it. In the end, Sig, If you want to badger SE about an RP designation, just do it. Get a petition going or some such, contact the community managers. Maybe sneak it into a live letter question or two. Ask for other people to slap their names on it. Some will, some won't. -
Balmung Transfer Restriction Megathread
Erah'sae replied to BumblingSeaBiscuit's topic in FFXIV News
I've found a lot pushing to stay current so they can get into the Stormblood expansion areas at patch drop. In any case I'm pulling the raw census data to see if they have some way to produce more granular activity information. Mostly because I have an unhealthy love for data analytics. -
Balmung Transfer Restriction Megathread
Erah'sae replied to BumblingSeaBiscuit's topic in FFXIV News
I don't think so since at lull levels it's stable. From what I understand the FFXI server was actually having rather nasty performance issues. Our queues during the 'lull' times are often only as long as it takes to hit "cancel" and try again (well below the 5 minute refresh timer) Of course, this is supposition, but I don't really see a need to do it. With all they're hype about cross world functionality, I think they're finally moving things to less of a physical server-centric architecture anyway. Also remember on those charts that us RPers tend to exaggerate the "active" player numbers a bit since they're based on number of loadstone characters with specific achievements. We often roll up multiple characters for the sake of the RP and glamour endgame that the non-RPers don't tend to do. What numbers I'd really like to see is peak concurrency compared to the other servers. I'm sure we'll be much higher (since we hit the cap frequently) but other servers also hit the concurrency cap as well. Queues on Gilgamesh and JP's top server (chocobo? I don't have the chart infront of me) are not unheard of. -
discussion An EU server, for EU roleplayers *UPDATED 14/06*
Erah'sae replied to Swanmay's topic in RP Discussion
No no, that was "megaserver emulation" but without the option to select which zone server you'd get placed into. From a server architecture view, SE could keep adding extra zone instances like a megaserver, but they gotta make that implementation better. You could select the zone by going to a zone line and selecting the zone. You just had to hope that said instance had space for you to enter. I remember this clearly. It was horrible and since this is all about RP... It would make "Open-world" RP even worse. This is from my experience with megaservers. It's an experience I'd hate to repeat with FFXIV. I only mentioned it as forgotten as that was part of their HW launch stuff, along with what you had listed. That was something they added after the fact. The first couple times they did multi-instances, you were stuck. Then people complained and they gave us the bare-minimum amount of support to switch. Wasn't all this for a week or two? I can't see it becoming a permanent thing. Like ESO it would make finding the players you want to be with incredibly hard unless you are lucky enough to be in their zone. In ESO's case, you gotta at least know of the player first before you can warp to their zone. This becomes a problem with finding RP as well, especially when you don't know anyone. I was always walking into what I heard was an RP hub and it was empty each time. Through word of mouth I was able to warp to the zone with players thanks to a player, and that wasn't until many many months later. I hated that ESO did that for town zones as well as in the field. It more or less made random in the field RP a nightmare. WoW did this as well for a while on high pop servers. City of heroes had a much better implementation where you got a list of non-full copies of the zone. Star Trek Online implemented something similar but you could cheat the system by grouping and re-zoning. I really hate the 'megaserver' concept as it further destroys the feel of an open world, but I'm one of those old fellows who spent many a month in beardy discussion of the virtual world concept. -
Balmung Transfer Restriction Megathread
Erah'sae replied to BumblingSeaBiscuit's topic in FFXIV News
On the first, I don't think we'll see SE stick their fingers in and flag something other then Balmung as the 'RP' server without also flagging Balmung the same. It would also mean that SE is throwing an official hat into supporting RP, which while it would be awesome, I'm not sure I see happening. I really don't know on the second and third. New players, if we have a unified "go here" will pending the health of the new community. Existing players, some might but many others won't uproot or deal with the disruption. That said, Balmung's community is probably healthy enough to survive a sizable portion moving away and maintain it's post-critical mass state. The target to look for is about six months from now after the expansion's newess has worn off and people go wander off to 'game of the moment'. If the new community isn't over over a certain total mass (I'm just throwing a number out here) 100-200 players or so with at least five or six different distinct groups producing content for the community, it will have problems and need a lot of hand-holding to continue on. If it goes decently above that, it'll probably hit a critical mass and become self sustaining. The pro: Choice. More choice is always awesome. The con: Choice? You get different communities competing for incoming players. This sort of thing breeds community rivalries. It's up for debate if this is 'good' or 'bad'. The only real risk is that the community splits down into pieces below a viable self sustaining point. At that point it is just a matter of time before fragments 'pillars' burn out and the community collapses. I am really interested in how they structure the XP and Gil incentives. This could be both an interesting and troubling thing depending on implementation. I'll hold off on a real opinion until we know more?
