Not to continue beating a dead horse, didn't they do this at the start of HW as well? I know I had to wait to transfer in once I started. It wasn't possible then, it isn't possible now. It got better. Not really. They implemented login queues and added the afk timer again, but most people could still pay to transfer in. (There were a couple small moments when transfers to Balmung were suspended, but nothing that had an official Lodestone post specifically about transfers.) I must have been one of those unlucky sods who tried during said small moments. I consider myself corrected, thanks! I'd continue the server topography discussion but I don't want to derail further then I have.

To be honest, I don't thing the server itself doesn't matter as much for this as getting things set up to where there are 'enough' pillars to handle a that time period of initial move in and hitting the critical mass of self-sustainability. I'm trying to envision what things will look like a year from now when the routine churn has taken it's toll and removed a few of those pillars (because real life always does.) I watched folks try and establish an RP community on Cactaur and have it fall apart for similar reasons. The big coordinator of the few smaller groups had a kid and quit to be a dad. It more or less died out not too long after. A new RP community needs to be able to survive disruption like that.

I'm going to test some more tonight when I've got all three accounts going (Nefzen's, mine, and the kiddo's [though she's locked out of Balmung... grrr...]) on the same ip address. That's when the connectivity really used to bottom out. The old datacenter's hardware didn't handle NAT to multiple devices on the same external IP on the same server very well at all.

Having a good mechanical keyboard with switches that match your typing style is -awesome- for roleplay in this MMO. Back on topic though.... The .9 and .10 are the data center lobby servers (authentication servers). It looks like Balmung's actual server is 204.2.229.83 It's still off of NTT's Sacramento nodes so ping shouldn't change much, however. (1ms deviation between .9 and .83 for me) On a good note I've been had a client open to .83 and am monitoring the traffic and am seeing far less packet loss then against the old servers. Less then 0.1% thus far.

Like I said on the other US thread, what I think you all need to do is sort out who is going to move first, sort out who is going to do your cat herding, event pushing, gathering / publicizing / etc. Then sort out where they want to go. We're spoiled by Balmung. It has hit the mass where it is really self sustaining for most of these things. Building that from the ground up is a massive amount of work. I'd suggest get your workers sorted, let them sort out where they're going to set up shop with their people. Then build a thing, and the rest will fall into place. I fear if you (plural) move without that infrastructure and I fear for the long term sustainability. For EU, there's time to get that in place before they announce the new EU data center servers. Low pings mean you'll likely find a server with more then just the RP community looking to move. That helps with your PvE stuff (hunts, raids, etc). I have very little of a personal stake in this race, I've just seen this done (and not done) time and time again over the years. tl;dr: Take your time, don't rush, and plan together before jumping.

Hrm, that's something I didn't think of... It currently runs on a US Central Time clock (I'm lazy and it's running on a dev box set to us central local time.) I should change it to do the daily notifications at midnight on the server time zone... I'm glad you noticed this before I moved it to a UTC+0 production server. That would have been hilarious.

I cannot stress this enough. With the cross world stuff, it is probably the easiest way to get other RP servers going. Somewhere that people can still interact and play with when all of their friends that aren't going to move. It takes that stress point away which makes it more likely to be successful.

I see your point Kylin and yes, larger communities are more difficult to find that 'perfect place' This is why infrastructure like we have here is required. It's not entirely unlike trying to find a place to hang out when moving to a new major city in the real world. There's a certain balance needed between actually having a choice and choice paralysis. The latter I believe is what you are describing. I actually suffer from the latter. I'm not (and haven't ever been) in an RP FC (or even a real FC on Balmung, everyone in my FC is my and my spouses alts). Just can't sort out where I'd actually fit in despite the number of opportunities available. As far as people leaving, there is always churn, and that is something that does concern me about the lock. Even assuming the (non existent) perfectly functioning community, there are always players that move out of it due to various reasons (work, new game, new RL constraints, social issues, death, etc), while it's been noticed (FC events going away, taverns being delisted) I've kind of come to expect this in any community. We're a bit far from perfect due to the simple nature of being human. Maybe this behooves us, as a community, to get the previously mentioned mentoring program going again. Maybe we need a better searchable FC / LS list to assist people in finding what they need beyond the simple "Making Connections" forum here. Perhaps something on the official forums as well? Perhaps someone will step up and start any of those initiatives? If so, regardless of the lock persisting the community will be in a better place.

Yup, there are 37 weekly recurring events on my calendar, that isn't counting the monthly, bi-weekly, or one offs which we seem to have 3-10 of every week. Currently over 100 discord servers (I don't really know his this related to FCs, some are linkshell based) have the RP Calendar discord bot broadcasting events of the day. Balmung has grown well beyond what most games call RP servers and taken on a life of it's own. Communities have subcommunities, which have groups inside of those. It's kind of awesome to watch. What another server really needs is about 100 or so highly active RPers to seed a community. That's about the minimum I'd go for any sort of sustainability. In my experience once you go below that you start to experience problems due to players being a scarce resource. Even 100 is pretty small, all things considered, but it's enough to get a solid foothold going. That's bout 5 decent sized groups to interact. To maintain any sort of inertia they need infrastructure (groups need to be able to find each other easily and to communicate) and people pushing the social side. You also need your movers and shakers who spend their night coming up with events and helping to facilitate those of others. I'm personally too old and don't have the desire to push any of that on my own, but for those looking to establish a new community on another server, I think that's about what it would take for another RP server to get a solid foothold and survive long term. (edit: I am the lord of typos.)

I saw mention up above that Balmung has gotten too large to be healthy. I'd say the opposite. Balmung is above that critical mass point where RP starts to just happen and the community becomes near self sustaining. This as opposed instead of having everything segregated and insular. There's enough variety and enough breadth to where you don't see the cliquishness and infighting that's constantly plagued "that other game" because of it's raw size, everyone has the ability to just 'be somewhere else' and have something to do. FC leaders aren't as worried about people stepping on their ideas because there's room, population wise, for more then one group to do a gimmick. I do see the need for other RP servers but mostly because we have a scarcity of resources in the form of housing. If Square ever fixes that, I'd almost argue they should work on increasing world capacity instead of adding new servers. Bring more people together instead of trying to split them apart. Maybe with the direction they're going with cluster wide friends lists and the like it won't matter in the end. I do agree with a lock down at the start of the expansion though. Expansions bring an influx of returning and new players who will be itching to 'play with their friends' during what is already the highest player concurrency times in a game. Queues suck both log in and otherwise, extra overcrowding as everyone rolls a red mage/samauri in the open world is going to be interesting as well. At least in this game we don't have to 'get the tag' to get quest credit.

Let me start by saying, the RP around being a low birth rank male Keeper is absolutely fine. There are a few of us sae's around. While it's not uncommon it's probably looked on poorly socially speaking. (RP wise, it's more than fine) Picture this in your head. Remember the old outdated real world notion of a need for male children to keep the bloodline going. Especially in the pre-empire days of Rome where women weren't really documented as having real names either but just 2nd Daughter of Such and Such and the link. 1st daughters were important. They were alliance makers, treasured prizes and the like. 2nd daughters were good for securing support and trade deals and the like. Beyond that.... well, you got the rumors. Why couldn't there have been more sons? What's wrong with the father. his seed must be weak, etc. This is something you still see today in some cultures. Now turn that around, gender wise. Keepers are a culture where males don't even get their own names. That right there says something about keeper society. A 1st son, that's prime breeding material. That's someone to be bartered off for status and position. A 2nd might be good for securing alliances and what not. A 3rd? meh... a 4th... ye gods.... a 5th.... well... someone is a weak progenitor to not have had more daughters. It's what prompted me to created a 'sae. An interesting and eye opening view of a gender swapped society. Your character is a fifth son. A -fifth- Why couldn't that deadbeat of a mate not have given us more females. The line isn't going to preserve itself. Here's your brush 'ra. At least you can clean the scullary. Sorry, I got a little rambly there.

One key thing, in any RP related situation, storyline or otherwise. Always plan for the players to do something completely unexpected. The more you structure things, the more you can expect things friction as things go 'off the rails'. Nebbs has a really good list so I'm just going to add a few things that really worked for me when I was DMing on NWN persistant worlds: - Keep a journal (A google document works, but I use a physical small ruled notebook.) Every player interaction goes in here so you have a reference point of who interacted with whom. - Plan out your beginning (aka your hooks), and create background information. Your story rarely started when the players become involved. There's usually some interactions that happened before. Bits of history to the story. Plan those, build those, create little interesting tidbits from that which you can use moving forward to make the npc's and situation more 'real'. - Give people a reason to care. You can do this by seeding important plot NPC's with the players early. If you want a death or a problem to be something the players care about, give them a reason to care. - Don't use important characters you don't control as direct parts of your plot. IE: You can do something -for- House Fortemps without directly using named members of House Fortemps. This proofs you against FFXIV devs deciding to murder someone in a cut-scene or some such. - Have an exit strategy aka an 'end' condition. This bit from Nebbs I can't emphesise enough so I'm just going to quote it again: "The RP on adventures happens a lot in the still moments between the activity, let the players enjoy that before hurrying them along (there is no need to rush)" I cannot stress how important that is. PC Character development doesn't really happen in the heat of battle, or in mid crisis. That can be the catalyst, certainly. The real development happens when people have downtime to process what happened, when the adrenaline wears off and there is time to look on what your actions have wrought. This downtime is also where your story can reach more people as characters talk about it in taverns with others not involved. That's the sort of thing that makes this a living world instead of a bunch of disparate 'quests'.

My take on amnesia is it really depends on what type / how it's done? Retrograde Amnesia I dare say isn't that uncommon given the tragedy that most adventuring age (and even below!) have gone through at this point. It's an easy way (thought cliche) to cover up sins in the past, though it doesn't prevent you from moving forward. All NPC's seem to have some form of Retrograde Amnesia in the fact that they can no longer recall anything about the warriors of light and other associated figures from pre-calamity. Anterograde Amnesia can be -really- interesting. This is that after a certain point in time, no new long term memories are created. It would be very interesting to see a character facing this and struggling to get through it. You'd be able to remember immediate history, but after a certain point it'd just piff. That time frame seems to be different from individual to individual. Sometimes it's they can't remember yesterday but events of today are clear, sometimes weeks, sometimes moments (see Dory from Finding Nemo). I've run into several characters in the past that had Anterograde Amnesia and it was handled pretty well. There's potential for good story in the coping mechanisms and the interactions with others, but you'd need to find a group of RPers to interact with that actually care about what that means. A touching moment, or a contact made only to have the importance and meaning being that lost in a day/weeks time can be traumatic for all involved, especially those that don't really understand what's going on. In a sense as well, they're the perfect confidant / confessor as they won't remember what was told them anyway after a time. I think with the right crowd (especially if you don't explain it all OOCly before hand) it could be a powerful story tool.

I need some input. I'm considering writing a system to allow people to manage their own event posts. However that would require logging into a service instead of just submitting the form. This would let you 'own' your event so to speak and make updates at will. I'm still toying with how to best implement this but want to get some opinions. Contact me at [email protected] to give me your input. The Discord Bot may be going through some maintenance soon. It's processing several hundred messages a minute at this point from all of you using it and I need to tweak it's filtering. There are also some conflicts in usage tags with the KupoBot as we do concurrent development of similar features. I'm also looking for suggestions of things to add and remove to the bot. See the above email for feedback. In other developments the rainmeter skin will probably be released "as in" to the public.
