Is there a set schedule for these moving forward?

I'd say at least 2/3rds of the 'restaurant or bar' groups are honest to god restaurants and bars. There's often some group within those FC's doing 'shady dealings' because really one gets tired of being 'just a bartender'. I know most of the groups put far too much work into the 'bar', 'tavern', and event RP for it to really be a 'front'. It's more like anything shady in the background is that pesky 'cost of doing business' bit that happens with most large venues.

Expect event updates tomorrow morning. Got back from DragonCon today and I'm too tired to get it sorted right now.

I'm going to pre-emptively post that I'm going to fall behind a few days in the routine updates on this thing. I'm on my way to DragonCon and will be busy having anxiety attacks over being in the art show again, so I probably won't get to the calendar updates until Tuesday or Wednesday. That said if you're at the convention and you want to meet myself (or the far more entertaining Nefzen who originated this) give a yell.

The style is far, far older than that series, and it is far from 'father and king' The first I personally played was Wizardry in the 80's, I think is was predicated by Obleiette. These two spawned an entire legion of dungeon crawlers in the 90's. Some of the ones to gain particular notoriety was the Eye of the Beholder series by TSR. There was also a precursor to the Ultima series called Akalabeth that might predate the old Wizardry but was a similar dungeon crawler but I can't remember for certain, I never played it. I just know it was a stepping stone to Ultima I. If you liked Etrian Oddysy, check out the Eye of the Beholder, or the Ultima series. I think you might find some real enjoyment in them even if they are quite dated by today's standards. ~ Erah'sae

With all the seasonal events coming up in game, those may give you some opportunities to set things up. I've rarely seen a seasonal event not have a large turn out as people are already getting into the 'feel' of it through the quest lines.

Fudge, Timezones are Hard or Balmung RP Discord Bot version 0.9.5 No really, they’re a pain in the tail. The discord bot should now properly give a full 24 hours of events reguardless of your timezone and respecting daylights savings time borders for anywhere in Microsoft’s TimeZoneInfo database. In addition the ‘daily’ notifications (set by !adddaily and !removedaily) will now broadcast at midnight local time to a channel instead of midnight at US Central. This will include events happening at 'midnight’ of the next day just to make sure you don’t miss anything. In other news, !roll feature has been updated to support 'Fudge’ dice used in the Fate based systems (like Fate-14). Use !roll #f to roll # number of fudge dice. I'm picking the 3rd of the month for two reasons. It's more consistent to schedule around and it's easier to deal with putting it on the calendar. (Google Calendar makes last weekends of the month a pain in the tail to deal with) I'm biased.

Figured I'd start pushing the change logs to this as well: Balmung RP Bot Change Log v0.9.27: - Added fudge dice to the !roll command. Use !roll #f to roll # fudge dice. - Experimenting with some new timer / event generation code to better handle issues with non-US TZs - Hardened the bot against discord related hiccups causing malformed messages to be received. - Several other memory optimizations and channel message relay optimizations have been put into place.

On the passage of time, this is an odd one, and one of the very few things I actually miss about WoW. I run in real time as I've said above. I rarely bother with day/night sensitive dialog in game because of the discrepancy. One Eorzean day is a little over 1 hour real time (70 minutes), so it's difficult to get any serious scene does within a 1:1 Eorzean to character time conversion. I do tend to go by the most common TZ on the server which appears to be US Eastern Time for Balmung. This does get odd since there are people I know of from 10 distinct time zones that play the game, probably more since I know groups getting event notices in GMT from multiple EU and further east TZ's. Time's just relative.

In the end though, do what makes sense for the sake of story. Bamfing across the water taking two months (we suppose) is well and good but unless it matters for story, just hand wave it. Does it really matter that you're here instead of there? If no? Who cares? If you the actions of one setting will impact another, then you've got a bit of a catch-22. I tend to play in real, time. If a scene doesn't finish by the end of a night, we tend to either summarize or actually break up the scene to multiple days. If Erah'sae can't be at a social event because he's off doing whatever, he can't be there. This gives your personal story some gravity to other people. When a friend who misses, lets say, your presence at the Grindstone for two weeks, it gives them a hook to get involved. Failing that, at least something to talk about. The reverse of time bubbling things is also a bit of a trap. You can't really say next Grindstone "I spent two months training in seclusion." or some such if you were there last week. Again though, it really depends on your goal as a personal storyteller. Do you want to focus on your story, social enjoyment, or creating a person within a living breathing world? There's no better or worse in the choices. Just something you have to decide for yourself.

I've done this with many old characters in other games. (WoW, a few NWN persistant worlds used mine after I was done with them. I get to reprise one every so often for a larp as well.) There's a lot of history created with a character over a the years, especially if you run them more like living breathing parts of the world than a protagonist/antagonist in a plotline. If you just stop playing and leave the character intact instead of removing the character like some do, it's a bit odd for that resource the character has become to just vanish from everyone else's stories. On my WoW character, I played him for a decade and he became firmly entrenched in the server's specific lore along side a few others. It's amusing every now and then to have someone ping me going "Hey, how would Asherrean act if we brought this to him, I want to make sure we're getting it right?" or to get asked to NPC him for someone else's story line here and there, either directly or through handwaved background action. With the NWN servers (Two now) I've had characters that became permanent parts of the NPC casts in games. I no longer have any creative control over them, but it wouldn't be fair after getting them to the points they reached to have them just vanish and leave a gap for the DM's to sort out. One (until the server died) was a vizier for a city and turned into a quest giver. The other's is an npc hermit they move to random places in the hill/country side that spits out random cryptic prophecies as the DM team needs him to. With the Larp, my character was a lorekeeper (this is a trend with my characters) and after turning over my notes to the plot crew, they use him on occasion to give some of that info out to player groups when it becomes relevant again in return of odd favors done. So he's still around in writing facilitating story like I used to do when I was playing him. As a bonus, when I show up, I get to actually play him as an NPC for plot. Erah'sae? Well... I haven't really played him enough to where he'd warrant much of an NPC unless someone needed a name to drop for who they hired to deliver something. His 'job' as a chocobo courier in Eorzea is usually hand-waved as an 'unimportant detail' for most stories/plot-lines. Maybe he'd end up like one of the Fate escort NPC's running a chocobo load of goods from Gridania proper to Ala Mhigo or some such? Though for now, I'm still exploring him. He's still growing, and I'm sorting out his story. I wouldn't be opposed to NPCing him out so to speak when I quit/fantasia/rename out of him if someone had a use for him.

The timer in PotD would add an interesting element to RP. You're on a literal clock between textual RP and killing / clearing content. Pre floor 100 you usually have a decent amount of time to spare if people are at decent gear levels. Given most pug clear times that gives you about 20-30 minutes of text time per 10 level set. It could make quite an exercise in brevity and to the point rp text/emotes. This is a skill very useful for larger events where speed over verbosity is often rather helpful. As an aside, you don't even have to 'win' the floor set to have decent RP session with it. Getting pulled out by the padjal because something went wrong/took too long/etc can also be used as a RP hook as well for more RP.
