I've shared how things are set up with a few people over on Mataeus. Most of them went "oh crap" at the amount of manual work involved in validating / refreshing / vetting events and backed away slowly from my level of insanity. The backbone of it is just a google calendar and a google form for event submission. It requires some manual curating as events fall off without notification as people quit / take breaks and you get someone not involved that actually sends the removal requests. This requires manual validation that the event is really gone, etc. If real life ever decides to stop kicking me in the shins, I have a framework in place for the discord bot to support multiple calendar feeds and post them to different channels but I barely have the time/energy/sanity to keep up with Balmung and I actually (in the rare occasion RL lets me) play there.

Here's my take on the lock. Yes, it sucks that we can't have new friends join the server. However, Balmung is still large enough to where you can't possibly know everyone. There's always new groups to explore, no people to meet, even without new players coming into the server. Sometimes it just means taking a plunge into a new group to find new connections, or hitting an event you wouldn't otherwise have gone to. Bring friends, make new ones, there's still a ton of people out there you haven't met yet. (10,000 active character is insane.) There are 35 recurring events each week on the calendar. It is literally impossible to hit all of them every week. If new blood is needed, one can just do something different. Maybe even fantasia / rename an alt and go for the all new clean experience? On other bits that have come up: I don't see there being a server split on FFXIV. I can't see them doing it without an unmitigated disaster happening. I don't really see the need either. The only times we have server issues is on expansion release date. The only split I see is maybe a datacenter split for Aether since even smaller servers hit the same issues we did on the expansion launch. (read: balance cluster population between two smaller clusters) My one comment on the automatic CRZ function of WoW. It was single highhandedly the worst thing Blizzard could have done for open world RP that ever happened to that game. I think it was even worse then the whole zone phasing they started doing before then.

Real life decided to kick my tail a bit and I couldn’t get to the calendar updates last night. This morning is post-holiday Monday hells so I won’t have time to get to it until tonight. A couple of years and this is the first time we’ve been a full 24 hours late. There's a bunch of updates too, so take things currently showing on the bot with a grain of salt. A few thoughts on this. Who is the '2nd place'? The person who lost to the challenger to the champion? Or the champion if the champion loses his title? Personally, it's really up to you all. If you have a first and second prize, someone's going to ask about third place, etc, etc... If someone doesn't like the prize structure, they're more then able to not complete. A potential suggestion would be to charge a small entrance fee and allow others to contribute to the pot. Have a guaranteed first place prize as you do now, and divide up the pot in some ratio between the high ranking competitors. This lets you do it with the cost of a bit more logistics work (keeping track of entrance fees and collecting them) but also encourages people to bring others as it makes the pot sweeter. Something like 1st place gets (standard price) + 30% 2nd place gets 30% Finalists gets a split of the remaining 40%

What I've done in DM'd scenes is I set a timer for people to get their actions in, or their character didn't get one. This keeps it flowing and stops people from overthinking the situation unless their characters are also going to be paralyzed by overthinking the situation. No 'in scene' time bubbles, no jumping about. If someone needs a break to handle something RL, we may pause. It's good to let the players know ahead of time what the timer is, and give a warning when it approaches. Lets say there's a 3 minute timer. Give an OOC warning at 1min seconds, 30 seconds, and done. Then actions are resolved, the DM responds and we move forward.

Heya, I've been playing a male Keeper for a while, and while there are some stereotypes out there, there's only been two actual cases that might fit the bill in a bit over two years. One of those was from someone I'd rubbed the wrong way in a previous game that carried a grudge so I don't think that really counts. But I guess it's the situations you put yourself in and the folks you surround yourself with combined with how you play the character. While a lot of people don't take lallafels seriously at first glance, once you present yourself and show a bit of consistency the stereotypes fall off. If folks you run with are incapable of doing so and taking you seriously as one, then it may be time to find a new circle?

A few other things.... a.) Anyone who tries to, ICly or OOCly dissuade other people from playing with your character by being offensive or otherwise constantly making them uncomfortable. Esp if they do this OOCly. b.) If someone keeps trying to pull you away from group events or trying to make some RP more important than your pre-planned RP with others. This is a warning sign and fits in with a. c.) Anyone who pushing boundaries despite being asked OOCly not to, especially OOC boundaries. d.) People who, when the night is wrapping up, always have something else important that needs to be addressed in private ICly, or always has some new drama that they "need to talk to someone about". Often times they have to get the last moments of your time before you log out, and keep you around or make you commit to private rp when you get back using you having to leave as something to hold over your head.
