How do you guys go about wearing your experience?
Zelmanov replied to Zelmanov's topic in RP Discussion
While I am part of the FATE system, this question had come up prior and is independent from that. in fact, with the FATE system I feel I have an /easier/ time showing experience because of the confidence that my character can approach a situation with, not only that, as far as I know, on Balmung, Fate is headed by Verad and those he deputizes so among that group, people involved in those campaigns tend to know eachother, even in passing. So the claims that can be made there are instantly substantiated as opposed to just being chucked up to mary/gary sue character creation. That is a luxury not afforded in say, freeform rp done with strangers. It is a lot harder, I feel to make it sound like your character is a braggart rather than someone who is OOC'ly going "look how awesome my grognar the demonkiller is". My character is far from a braggart however so I feel striking the balance is EVEN MORE important. -
My character is entering his 2nd year of RP, and he's been busy. Started initially as a middle of the road character who could just as easily oscillate between antagonist and protagonist, the people he came into contact shaped him to being more moderate and accepting, instead of an Ishgardian Zealot is he's a reformist ready to lay his life on the line for a new Ishgard as opposed to just death to all dragons and heretics. And that's just character development, events wise he commanded one of the many platoons at the Steps of Faith, was part of the expeditionary force to The Churning Mists. Helped overturn a heretic plot in Ul'dah (player event). Played guard escort through Dravania into the hinterlands to raid the great gubal library and I even wagered my character's life in perma-death possible events. And yet, I'm not sure how to properly convey these experiences to fresh faces without becoming an expositron 5000 with every new encounter (which is something I desperately avoid). So I guess I want to ask you guys, how exactly do you give off an air of experience? Of being around the block? It goes a bit into that dodgy area of desired character perception vs others' actual perception of your character, but perhaps there are some tips for it? To be clear, its not that I desire "fame" in as much that people should cower in fear or swoon at the mention of his name.

Yeah..an aerial approach on probably only city with ANTI-AIR TURRETS may not be the best.
-
Another, though probably much less dramatic route is having a mage in your employ who can teleport/return, he just takes them and YOINK! Although, of course, some people refuse to even acknowledge teleporting, so meh
-
Probably unchanged, but perhaps due to just a merit of gender his "Dogged, Obsessive Determination" and "Unflinching fearlessness" may just come off as...bitchy. Also, in terms of physicality, Orianna would be more fitting of a highlander female. So far I've seen no lore about women in Ishgard going into the military being unfavorable, especially as a dragoon, so that much doesn't change, especially if she is a woman who seeks honor since her background gives her known within Ishgard. Now, the issue of Orrin's promiscuity being translated across gender lines. I could do a straight translation but when men do it, they are a stud, when women do it, it is viewed less positively. Not saying its right or wrong, just saying that's the way the world is and I do not have the capability to RP in a convincing, positive manner a sexually liberated and powerful woman without it falling apart hilariously. Basically I'd have to give the reigns to someone else. Or I could go the easy route and just make her as fierce a lover of women as Orrin is, problem solved!

Friends In High (and Low) Places [RP Development Questionnaire]
Zelmanov replied to Ignacius's topic in RP Discussion
For Orrin: Ul'Dah: That one lush who drinks the stores of Ishgardian brandy dry at the quicksands and always with a Miqo'te on his arm. He may have minor recognition with the Sultansworn for being that one troublesome but useful Dragoon that aided in averting an incident some moons ago. Limsa Lominsa: Who? Gridania: Who? Ishgard: Decorated commander and Dragoon, rumored to be of disreputable past due to his name not matching his race (Elezen name, but a Hyur). Among the military he is generally well received, a minor star for surviving the battle at the Steps of Faith and for heading into the churning mists as part of the Dragoon expeditionary force, He has a good track record as a commander of squads and platoons, no one under his command has perished to anything but combat against dragons so generally being assigned to him tends to be received well as a chance for glory. Among the Nobility, he is begrudgingly tolerated due to his military merit. That doesn't stop other nobility from scrutinizing him at every other turn however. A Hyuran claiming an Elezen name, of a highborn no less is quite an affront after all. Among the brume born, unless they fight and serve along side him, general distaste is the theme of things, but nothing personally pointed at him, just what's expected from just being nobility. -
as I'm counting right now, we have 6 people Orrin, Liadan, Klyn, Ququki(?), Leanne, Melkire if no one else wants to go, I'm sure we can discuss who should go quite easily.
-
I meant "weasel" in a playful manner. No hard feelings.
-
Orrin's amenable to Liadan weaseling out if she substitutes with a healer of equal skill. He just equates hearer with good healer, but perhaps that does not equate to a good combat healer. Basically he wants a chirurgeon of some sort or else they may be forced to retreat very early on.
-
Orrin's leading the charge, so he should go.
-
1. Amdapor (he's the one that's leading it) 2. Toto rak 3. Sylphalands

Also, in the CG video AND the game, the dragonkillers come with chain tethers and apparently an automated winch (as evidenced by bismarck fight). They aren't "meant" to kill in so much that if it does kill, yay, but its primary function is to lodge into dragons and bring them down to the ground to have the finishing blow by foot soldiers, cannons, archers, what have you. Also, while this is a bit of my headcanon coming into play, the CG shows Dragoons riding down dragons to the floor when they land a dragon as opposed to just leaping off, even dog piling onto the same one. So I like to think that once again, if they kill, they kill, but dragoons are like human dragonkillers (that sounds so "duh" when put like that). They leap on them, grounding them, and the troops can clean up, they leap again to ground more.

Your Character's Role in a Sci-Fi Series/Movie
Zelmanov replied to MilanaMina's topic in Fun Prompts
Gonna go by series: Star Trek Crew member : He'd be Worf. Chief security, repel boarders, board other ships, worf was also tactical officer. Orrin's tendencies would make him not good enough for a Riker Star Wars: If not Jedi, Pilot of some sort of fighter ship. If Imperial, he'd be akin to Rommel from world war 2, he'll fight the war, but will overturn morally questionable orders. -
Orrin's there, in fact, he's there several days early and bumming on a couch
-
There were a few questions about it on the official forums, basically it amounts to Gibberish or some sort of demonspeak that is truly ancient.
-
It is a bit Head-canony but I subscribe to the idea that different regions have different accents, 3.0 Took our two voiced Ala Mhigans and turned them EXTREMELY scottish when they had different accents before. And as Virella said, Highborn pillar people have a different means of speaking and accent in comparison to to the baseborn people of the brume. Nobility have a tendency of using french expressions such as Non-pareil, nom de guerre, etc.

balmung Looking to join an Order of Knights type of FC
Zelmanov replied to Lumizumi's topic in Chronicled Connections
Going on a limb by your profile picture and your backstory, you wish to be Ishgardian. While I can't speak for a specific order or chapter of knights FC or LS, I can say there is a very extensive and all encompassing Ishgard LS ran by Virella Duront that you should look into. -
*looks at finalists, looks at hairstyles that I would potentially use or won't mind, sees them with less points than hot topic rejects* Welp, the people of FFXIV have zero taste.

Oh, in terms of last names: This really depends on what you wish your origin to be. Elezen are known for their HUGE emphasis on family lineage and heritage, if you have a traceable family, take a lore accurate last name. Same with Hyur, you have an established family line (not necessarily noble) take a lore accurate last name (try to avoid doman last names, IE anything japanese.) HOWEVER, if you wish to be an orphan of unknown origin.(instantly puts you in the baseborn category), your last name can be more of a title than anything. Estinien, Azure Dragoon, is an orphan of Ferndale and for either reasons of him not knowing his parents or choosing to shirk his heritage entirely, he is now known as Estinien Wyrmblood (Edgy, to the max) My ASSUMPTION is that since that last name is not at all honh honh honh frenchy french name, it is a title/nom de guerre/moniker born from being the Azure Dragoon and not indeed his last name This is MUCH in the same fashion as others such as Joye of the 9 faces in the MCH class or Haurchefant of the Silver Fuller (since he is a bastard son) This is not at all uncommon and falls in line with classic Medieval naming conventions, last names as we know them are VERY VERY recent. Only go 500 years back and you have Leonardo da Vinci, his last name isn't Da Vinci, that's where he is from. He is "That specific Leonardo that comes from Vinci, don't confuse him with Leonardo da Firenze or Leonardo da Venezia). There is a reason why Aragorn introduces himself as Aragorn son of Arathorn. Last names really only belonged to nobility and when last names became mandatory for the sake of government, most took on the name of their occupation or lineage, which is why we have last names like Baker, Smith, Johnson and also why we can have many people named smith and not be related at all until far enough back. So last names in Ishgard can be pretty free form, especially for baseborn/orphans. Just stay away from the big names, such as the noble houses. We do NOT know the last names of any of the previous Azure Dragoons, or notable dragoons, except for maybe possibly Kain Highwind, who is only a dragoon of legend (may not exist) and the minion makes no mention of Highwind being his last name (it is just assumed because well, its freaking Kain Highwind)

Still no difference in the dialogue or treatment of the character regardless of race. Plenty of people in the real world who are zealous levels of religious are still also racist. The fact that someone is supposedly blessed by your god doesn't erase your prejudices or make you instantly regard them with the utmost of kindness and respect. There'd be this begrudging tone... this reluctant acceptance of divine will in spite of your hesitation to accept what's occurring. Not "Oh hello there, person whose race I'm not even at all fazed by". Firstly, the people you deal with in 30-50? Its Alberic, a borderline dragon sympathizer and a moderate, if not progressive. Its not a stretch to believe he'd take anyone in just because of his position as "enlightened". The people that overlook your training? SERIOUSLY doubt your ability, on the basis of being an outsider. Estinien? He's high on eye juice and just sees you as a tool for more power, which ultimate causes his fall. Race isn't an issue because at that point you are an unofficial pet project not even in scrutiny of the greater society of Ishgard 50-60, Heustienne seeks you out, she drinks the koolaid and buys the premise. no one else really acknowledges you as Azure Dragoon, she only cares about power to be stronger and cares not for the source. Do you think seeking the outsider Azure dragoon for help, which she must have heard stories of is really going to be stopped because of race at that point? as said before, no one even recognizes you as Azure Dragoon unless Estinien makes a point of it in the MSQ. The part of race at those points is so totally eclipsed by larger issues. It is not so much the fact that the racism isn't there as it is the context of those encounters are not predicated on race. you are talking about the same MSQ that doesn't take into account what you are wearing, EVER. I can trot up to the Holy See in a bikini and not a word said, I go see the Sultana in a heavy coat and snowman hat and not an eyelash is batted. Want to argue that exotic dress isn't criticized? Look a the hildebrand quest where the cross dressing itself is the thing put into question. Thing is, I can do something quite similar and go into quests where NO ONE is stunned by my outfit. The reason for the lack of change regardless of race or gender is for the most part the intention of normalizing the experience for millions of combinations of different characters playing different roles playing different races and genders. The writers DO NOT (whether its a good or a bad thing is different) want to account for these differences, they do not want to encode say, a violent distrust of lalafels in focal point of a quest because if a lalafel comes by the outcome should be much more dramatically different than say a hyur popped up. So of course every character the WOL runs into/interacts with will not be barred on race, but by being "unproven" or an "outsider" or "Want to see if you are as good as they say." anything that involves the player character directly is under scrutiny for exceptionalism.
-
You're right, which is why instead of saying: "There are no NPCs to support the idea of a miqo'te dragoon." I will say: "There is no lore to support the idea of a miqo'te dragoon." Sure there is. Play one and go through the dragoon questline. Nobody acts as if what's going on is extraordinary at all. After you complete the questline, no NPC you come across behaves as if you're unusual. That in itself is lore. There's no evidence that suggests any race isn't represented among dragoons or plausible as being an upstanding citizen of Ishgard. Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. Ergo, you can't rationally conclude that they aren't allowed simply because the game doesn't tell you they ARE allowed. The game's dialogues lack any indication of it not being acceptable or ordinary. In all due respect, while your argument is correct, using the job questline weakens your aurgment. the Dragoon questline deals with the exceptions of the exceptions. You are the 2nd Azure dragoon when there should ONLY BE ONE. Given the religious nature of Ishgard, if Halone chose a Miqo'te to be the Azure Dragoon, they sure as hell would shut up NOT ONLY THAT. But Estienien has to clarify around 30 times in the MSQ (If you go as Dragoon) that you are Azure Dragoon, and that is clarifications to People like AYMERIC, so it is clear VERY FEW PEOPLE know who or what you are. To everyone else, you are just a lance wielding schmo. Any plot that directly relates to what the main character in the MSQ or job quests can get away with has to be analyzed under immense scrutiny for a case of exceptionalism. Which is what the Dragoon job quests are PLAGUED WITH. It is the reason why Paladins are so comfortable with their job definitions and Dragoons get a 10 page discussion like this every few months. It has gotten easier with Heavensward, but it is still VERY HARD to separate what is just a quality of BAHAMUT KILLER, WOL and every day schmuck of the same job title.

I make a disclaimer that some of these descriptions are tinted with a bit of my own experiences and I tried my best to demarcate exactly where fact end and my opinions begin Ishgardian Lifespan: It is brutishly short, especially for military it seems. A dragon in the MSQ straight up taunts you in about it. Essentially it boils down to "once you hit 30 years old its downhill for you and us dragons just get stronger". Life has only gotten harsher with the 5 years of winter stretching resources thin. Starvation and cold claim lives just as often as dragons do. The only ones that see old age are the nobility that don't step foot outside Ishgard or the grizzled veterans that are now too old to fight and are more liability than resource, as shown by 2 retired dragoons(Alberic and Heustienne's father) and an injured Elezen in the barracks. If you plan to make a Dragoon (drachen armor and leaps), I would argue that it'd be much like a tennis player, a very TINY window of physical prowess at its peak, these guys are both seal team and suicide squad and the plots involving them seem to reflect that, you find dragoon squads dead or wiped out often to show that this particular dragon means business (See "Worf Effect")
