Just thought of another word "Joie de Vivre" = Joy of Life = keen or buoyant enjoyment of life
-
Partly inspired by the coining eorzean terms and partly by me doing the machinist quest line, I noticed that the nobility have a tendency of using french in their sentences. Lord Haillernarte uses "Nonpareil" which is another way of saying "without equal" or "Unparalleled" so I'd like to compile a list of french-origin loan words to be used to perhaps spice up the RP language.

Goobue's Arse = Horse's Ass eg. "Stop making a goobue's arse of yourself" I'll edit this as more come to mind.

Orrin's following Anstarra, especially in her current emotional state, diverted dead as well pls!

I like this quirk because it has grown organically from RP Orrin has a dislike of the shroud in all aspects. He dislikes the elementals, finding their rules and temperament capricious and arbitrary, he does /not/ like the idea of stepping on the wrong ant will curse him with woodsin for generations. Given the harshness of Ishgardian Orthodoxy, you know its bad when he can't put up with it. He also dislikes it as a battlefield, thickets and brambles, dense canopies, A dragoon's nightmare, barely enough room to jump or maneuver and not many ways to land back down safely. He feels like his wings are clipped when he can't see the sky.

Orrin had not a habit of reading the papers that circulated outside of Ishgard. In the past, no vitriol nor bile was spared in the state's direction when they abstained from the battle of Cartenau. How quickly people seemed to forget what they had done for them in the Autumn War while still fending off the ruthless horde. But the headline was too close to home this time. He sneers somewhat at the author of the title, Spahro Llorn, remembering the Miqo'te that prodded him about the incident involving heretic trinkets in the Ul'Dahn markets. Why'd he agree to speak with her at all would remain one of those unanswered questions for the ages. He skims through, double backing on some lines with some incredulity. He had heard about the shroud moon keepers had some tendencies that bordered on feral at times, and Kiht was more than curt with him last time they had spoken, but this seemed like too much. He sets the paper down and stands, hoisting his lance upon his back, leaving some gil upon the table as he strolled out of the carline canopy "Best not to show up unannounced then." he stares at the gate into the shroud and shudders, muttering something about blasted living plants, tight-lipped conjurers and confoundingly capricious elementals.

Found this gif, thought it was cool, about how ferocity with a knife is pretty much all is needed to wreck a person. http://9gag.com/gag/aNKw1Bv

"Witty" characters, can they be roleplayed by the dumb?
Zelmanov replied to LadyRochester's topic in RP Discussion
Any technical/book smarts person? Not at all an issue. You most likely have google on your laptop or smartphone within easy access. Any person who wishes to be a doctor or a mathematician can easily get away with it. Things, such as the mathematician even more so because of the fact that a lot of old mathematic principles are named after real people so you can toss any lore friendly name you want and call it things such as Jainquernardian theorem. Now, being a witty character...I think that's a LOT harder to do so in a satisfactory manner, especially because we are RPers and not a writer of our own story. That is because wit involves an observational, linguistic and emotional intelligence that allows them to pick apart another person for that satisfying retort. As a writer, not only do you know what every character's hopes and dreams and motivations are (or I hope you do) you can easily construct the encounter where someone of great wit can pick up on their counterpart's words or just be sassy. Not only that, but you have chances of rewrites, drafts and due to the static medium of writing, you can take weeks trying to find that perfect line. Now as an RP'er? Now your inability (for a lack of a better word) begins to show. Not only do you not know everything about who you are RP'ing with, they are not following a script either that you have set up. Unless they are kind enough to give visual ticks and other queues of weakness for a witty character to pursue, everyone can appear like a stone wall giving nothing for the witty character to easily pull upon. Because, to be frank, I find that the witty/genius people we love to think about such as Sherlock, Dr. Cox, Dr. House, Light and Lelouche, Winston Churchill (really, look at the quotes he is famous for, you need an entire burn ward dedicated to him) are not solely fun because of their machinations in the overall plot but for their person to person interactions. To get that perfect, scathing, intelligent tirade that Dr. Cox can pull off takes talent. This is especially true because the aspect I am talking about tends to be antagonistic in nature and thus a form of power and as RPC has shown, power without due justification causes a tizzy. You cannot type "Says a series of biting remarks that sends you into tears" because you cannot control the emotional reaction of your rp partner. It is much akin to the other forum post about too many "Fearless" characters, becoming someone who can instill fear with their presence requires playing the part convincingly. Just look at the "Describe a person's character with a gif" thread, people like Berrod can get the gifs of Armstrong from Fullmetal Alchemist because he plays the character properly and convincingly. Whether or not its the sort of character he set out to make when he made Berrod doesn't matter, his reputation is now perceived as that. Likewise, being perceived as witty, a genius requires the proper attitude to be done correctly and I feel that in this particular case, to be witty as a character requires wit of the player especially given the comparatively fast-paced nature of RP in comparison to script and novels. TL;DR: Book smarts? EASILY faked due to it being grounded in facts. Wit is subjective and fluid and thus harder to concretely identify. This makes it even more difficult to play without possessing the wit to do so. -
So, reading the teleport thread I saw a lot of mention of how gil may be a limiting factor. Mind you in game, that's about 1000 gil maximum per teleport. So it made me wonder, how much is a gil? What's it value? Should tossing 100 gil onto a gambler's table in shut people up or cause incredulous laughter? is it akin to the ye olde british pound where even 3-4 pounds was a fortune to live off of? I personally RP with coin pouches so that the exact value is never really given and allows me to better mesh with people's perception of wealth. However, TOSSING THE AUCTION HOUSE ECONOMY ASIDE. We can see things like Orange Juice purchased for around 20 gil I believe? Armor pieces tend to be in the thousands, but also the armor prices also suffer from good ol' RPG inflation where the higher level vendors sell at a higher price despite outwardly not being made of anything more amazing. They say that 1000 dollars is not a lot to have, but sure of a hell lot to owe someone. What'd be the equivalent?

Orrin definitely has the riches, given his background, but still he generally abstains from teleportation because of the lore aspects about it being quite draining. Remember, it takes great mental and physical fortitude to stay not only break yourself down but to reform as well. Even as a Dragoon, which may be the equivalent of being a Navy Seal of the Ishgardian Army, it still doesn't make him impervious to fatigue and duress. Also, imagine the obligations of a soldier in a standing army, if you are off teleporting, gallivanting about and then a call to arms arrives via linkpearl, you'll return to combat ragged, tired, a liability. I'm actually pretty certain that Return is the most commonly used spell as opposed to teleport. Not only is return free, but I can picture many an adventurer or aetherically adept being of suffering from "Resident Evil Rocket Launcher" syndrome where they just have that tool they could use to make it easier, but do not use it for fear of needing it later. Orrin would rather hazard hoofing it to Vylbrand, for example, and instantly return should he be needed as opposed to the other way around. Not to mention that according to Sounssy, if the 2.5 second cast time is meant to translate to 2.5 MINUTES, the resultant cooldown means a Day or more of being out of commission, and that's even as the most special of snowflake WOL. That is not even getting into the possible strain of distance and the fact that you cannot teleport to where you have not been. Hell, you can't even teleport someone WITH you unless you've been there yourself (I know this from wanting to take *Ahem* RP partners to the forgotten springs and find out they haven't been there so we have to run it). So there is an additional selfish aspect to the teleport as well. Sure you could ditch, given you had the 2.5 minutes to cast, but where you can go may leave behind your pals! there are LOTS of ways to get around teleportation for the sake of drama generated via distance.

Event 3: Leggerless swapped with me, She wants into 2 now.

Orrin would like to participate but needs an RP reason to get in. Anyone wish to aid in that?

If we were to stay within the confines of what may be feasible within the world of Eorzea itself, Orrin would have tastes for classical, orchestral as opposed to bard troupes with singers. However, Orrin would have a soft spot for the sort music used for dance in what could be seen as "lower class" areas. Its a bit of my personal head-canon that Ishgardian formals in the pillars would be too stiff for his liking. It'd be akin to the sountracks found here -QcbdIopUTo nf9GjH5zWFk oiGxNFlOO5k If we go for what's available in our world. I think Orrin may be a metalhead just by virtue of how many songs is about god damn slaying dragons. It also has the appeal of technical skill which he respects deeply. Otherwise I don't think there would be much music in his life.

watching this thread like a hawk for new events >_>

Also, most RP'ers in real time tend to respect a "Post order" much akin to a turn in Dungeons and Dragons. You get to say your piece then the person can react, next person involved can react then and then it loops back around to you. This may help alleviate some of the "stress" you may feel about "keeping up" in real time. Mind you, people only respect post order for the immediately involved group. If you RP in quicksands for example, those not involved in your scene will be posting willy nilly, having conversations of their own. Chat scrolling too fast is a real end-game level boss in rp

you can totally see Estinien's face with some low angle camera movements, Hyur's and lalafell's and Miqo'te can easily do it.

SO MUCH DELICIOUS LORE *NOM NOM NOM*
-
As for Ishgardian vs Outsider, the rules are unilateral, not harsher, but definitely will appear harsher to an outsider. There is an NPC in Dragonhead that makes it clear to some Adventurers that "Our country so you must abide our rules". Not to mention how Tataru and Alphinaud were treated.

A levequest has it that a woman showed her birthday present to a knight that was given to her by her parents. That present were Draconian rosaries, that alone was enough to ensure that "Her parents won't be joining her for dinner that night" So heresy, when pegged is acted upon quite quickly. MIND YOU, post MSQ leads to some issues,

Player-made Ishgardian Noble Houses Directory
Zelmanov replied to Blue's topic in Chronicled Connections
Server: Balmung Noble House Name: Halgren Pledging/Related/Serving to High House: Fortemps Description: House Halgren is a minor house within Ishgardian nobility, name supposedly having etymological roots tying back to old Elezen names akin to the likes of Haldrath and Thordan. One of the older houses, the house enjoyed a strong, secure place within the walls of the city, playing a bigger role in politics than in the war. However, during a particularly vicious period of extended Dravanian assualts, House Halgren suffered greatly, leaving a singular successor to the name: Charloix Halgren, an Inquisitor. After the dust had settled, Charloix quickly took a wife, Reillette, a cannoneer he had fallen in love with during a siege by the Dravanian Horde. Some believed that Charloix consorting with a commoner spelled the demise of the House. Included Races: Existing family is Wildwood Elezen and one Hyur, servants and periphery are Elezen or Hyur Existing Members: Count Charloix De Halgren (NPC, Patriarch and Inquisitor) Reillette Halgren (NPC, Wife of Charloix) Orrin Halgren (PC, my character, adoptive son of Charloix and Reillette) Rodiath Halgren (NPC, Biological son of Charloix and Reillette, though Orrin was adopted before his birth, Rodiath is now the one set to inherit the family name and responsibilities as though he was first born. A scholar of the Saint Reymanaud Cathedral in order to properly finish his schooling and take on responsibilities as a nobleman) Footnotes: (Optional) House Halgren was always a small house which shrunk even smaller with its most recent tragedy. As such what is listed there is who is of the house and I don't RP enough to take on servants or any sort of retainer because they will be bored out of their minds. However, House Halgren was house of much gossip both when the lineage was about to end and when Orrin was taken in as a child. You are free to use the house in reference to politics of the past or its current turbulent situation any thing else would make it better to contact Orrin Halgren in game -
I'm all for a list of Player made houses...would that be a wiki post or something?

I highly suggest completing the Heavensward main story quests if you have not, there are some...complications in being what you wish to be.

Eorzean Aetheists and The Believability of Such Characters
Zelmanov replied to Dat Oni's topic in FFXIV Discussion
I don't see the Garleans as much as Atheists more so than a culture of god killers. It is a lore very similar to the Char in Guild Wars. It is not so much they do not believe there are gods, so much as those gods are killable and the world is better off without them, that this world belongs to the kingdom of man. given what we know about primals (Or what we don't know due to the whole wrinkle added via "true" Eikons as opposed to the Garlean version of the word) it could be an "Atheist" in Eorzea believes that while they are being of extreme power, since they are killable they don't believe they are gods. Mind you, the concept of "not unkillable, therefore not a real god" is a very western, abrahamic religion concept. Gods from other religions drop dead all the time, look at Osiris, Baldur, Izanami, Several Hindu gods, etc. If you approach the world of eorzea from an abrahamic stand point, yes its quite easy to be atheistic because you can believe everything can be killed. from any other religious standpoint....eh what constitutes a god other than the religion ordaining it as such?
