  2. i think the whole 'atmosphere' of vampirism could exist, like as in some cannibal cult of people they wouldn't be called vampires though, they would just be a collective of people who went batshit insane (ayyyy)
  3. I had it happen without realizing it a couple months back. Allister finally got a ladyfriend in Ishgard, and he was just visiting so he decided to spend the night in the inn, which just so happens to be called Cloud Nine. I never really thought about it much, though. I'd like to try it sometime.
  4. Similarities - Main desire is having fun - Opinionated - Guarded - Self aware - Cautious and skeptical Differences - Allister doesn't give half a toss about what people think about him. - I would never be able to be as outgoing as Allister. - Allister is sort of bigoted and judgemental. - Allister is fit and tall, whereas I am a scrawny manlet irl - Allister cannot read. - Allister's in fact pretty bloody stupid I guess that's all I can think of off the top of my head.
  5. Well, it wouldn't really take me much to change the plot because the plot is always changing. That's kind of the thing about RP; it's all improv--or at least, it should be in my opinion. This has happened a few times in the past couple months for Allister, and I kinda just rolled with it. It's roleplay, it's meant to be fun. I agree with Ignacius about taking extra care to look out for OOC bleed. I've become a bit more cautious recently because of a similar situation. Someone's character developed a crush on Allister; her crush apparently bled OOC and I didn't even notice until it was too late. Long story short, it was nuclear and couldn't have blown up any worse than it did. So yeah, be /really/ careful. Far too many players seem to incorporate OOC feelings into IC and vice versa, and it can seriously damage people if left to fester unchecked or overlooked.
  6. Something a lot of people don't seem to realize--in my opinion, RP doesn't always have to be meaningful or result in character development. I think a lot of people are hesitant or simply don't bother because of that reason. Allister is mainly designed to facilitate roleplay in general, so I guess he'd be a Driver--so much so that he literally does not have a backstory. Unlike most, Allister isn't meant to be the 'main character' in roleplay. He's meant to add a dynamic to otherwise static roleplay encounters, even if it doesn't result in anything. Something that really bore fruit was when Allister decided to start up a linkshell. Nothing special, just a way for his acquaintances to keep in touch. If he had a memorable encounter with someone, he'd hand them a pearl. It was just a simple method for characters to interact with each other, but it resulted in something extremely meaningful. Even introverted people have their own ideas and their own plots, and the linkshell gave them a place to develop those ideas and make them real. Story arcs were literally creating themselves. I highly recommend people just start a casual IC linkshell for the hell of it and see where it takes them, because it can result in some really awesome memories.
  7. Maria and Allister being adorable.
  8. Along with hundreds of people suddenly going missing, dozens of people Allister knew a moon ago are now Au Ra; each with vastly different stories about how they became one. Being a considerably ignorant individual, Allister assumes it's some sort of bizarre disease epidemic that's going around claiming lives in scores, only to deform those who survive.
  9. Yeah, it's cool, I understand. Like I said, Allister isn't some sort of hateful monster, he's just a goof who makes snarky comments at people. However, if Allister is going to make a comment, I make it a rule to avoid real world issues. Homophobia doesn't even exist in Eorzea, so it wouldn't make sense to have him comment about that. His main shtick is that he gives almost everyone he meets a nickname, ranging from friendly to hostile depending on his opinion of the person. At its worst, it's on the same level as grade-school bullying, which is why I am concerned that people are still taking it personally.
  10. Unless it is specifically requested in their search comments, I have to respectfully disagree with sending a PM to someone before engaging in open-world RP (within reason, of course). The whole idea of open-world RP is that it is spontaneous; anything could happen. If someone is to put themselves in a hotspot like Ul'dah to seek out walk-up RP, I would be shocked if they honestly expected every encounter to be a good one. If someone does not want their RP session to have random characters join in, it would make sense to avoid a melting pot for exactly that. I roleplay a character who is naturally confrontational. He is no stranger to punches in the face for acting like an ass. He's a big goof, really, and makes a daily habit of embarrassing himself by acting like an ass. He thinks of himself as the guy who says what everyone else is thinking, although he's rarely correct. It adds a fun dynamic to RP, but it inevitably causes hurt feelings. While he isn't 'evil' or 'villainous' by any stretch of the imagination, people aren't expected to like Allister at all. What troubles me is how people's dislike of the character consistently bleeds into an OOC dislike of me as a person. I'm troubled because, for so many people, the line between IC and OOC is nearly indistinguishable.
  11. My character is an ignorant bigot, sure, but he is not homophobic, nor has he made any comments against homosexuals in any way shape or form. I'm sorry if Allister hurt your feelings because he's rude, but please don't lie about my character. Cheers.
  12. 1. strawman 2. strawman. also, i roleplay an asexual character 3. what 4. strawman, but you do realize this kind of falls into the ERP category right
  13. I've never really understood why people put "straight" or "gay" in their RP search comments. My character is not going to know or care about your character's sexuality. It's completely useless information to anyone who is not looking for ERP. Allister Dedrick Favourite Colour: Red RGBY Friendly!
  14. "Hey, don't call me a cat." - A cat. "________" - A Duskwight. Fill in the blank.
  15. I am a tremendously shy person in real life. My shyness is the main reason I enjoy RP, though. To compound this, I made my character naturally annoying outgoing. When I RP, I'm someone entirely different. It's a nice escape, and it's a ton of fun to put myself in the shoes of another personality. I don't think of it as "I am trying to roleplay with other roleplayers". I think of it as "Allister is trying to meddle in affairs not his own". You can't expect RP to just fall into your lap; you gotta make the effort to involve yourself. If you can't make the effort, make your character make the effort. That's the cool thing about RP.
  16. I've been accused on multiple occasions of passive-aggressively denouncing another player's character by accosting them IC. And to some degree, I can understand why, but Allister is a painfully mundane person that has been known to be an asshole, a bigot, and mildly racist. Allister once overheard an individual in the Quicksand claim they killed people to devour their souls, and so he openly laughed and said they were full of themself. I was then hit by a barrage of OOC tells from their friend, exclaiming that I should "learn about someone's character before passing judgement on them like that". On many occasions, Allister has made snide remarks to a group of people who literally lick each other's bodies in public. He'll also comment at people who are dressed in nothing but strings, as well as people who are dressed head-to-toe in full battle armor. I had to explain to them in detail that it was my character who was passing judgement, not me as a player. Because that's the truth. If someone were to walk into a tavern and start seriously discussing killing people and devouring their souls, I'd honestly be surprised if everyone in the room completely ignored that. If a couple were to start making out, it's all too common for a passerby to shout out "get a room!" Allister is "that guy". As a result, he's gotten the shit kicked out of him on multiple occasions for his loud mouth. Allister is almost the polar opposite of how I act in real life, so it's actually a ton of fun to roleplay as... when people can separate IC and OOC. If someone's character gets insulted in RP and they personally take that insult in the same way it was intended at their character, they probably inserted way too much of themself into their character.
  17. Holy sweet fuck, I got in. There was literally a 30 second window before the servers went down. I had to spam the create character button.
  18. I created a character, but the names I chose were already taken. Not even 3 name attempts later, character creation was closed off. 7 minutes. 7 minutes after the maintenance was scheduled to end. That's how long I had to create a character. 7 fucking minutes. That is fucking disgusting. Fuck this game.
  19. Despite what people may think, it is quite possible that AFKers are a part of the problem. Just warping into Limsa, I'm greeted with this. http://puu.sh/eH4uh/1b5950658f.jpg There are so many people AFK that I am actually unable to fit all of them in this single screenshot. In total, there are 16 people AFK sitting outside of the Aetheryte. Taking not but a few steps into Hawker's Alley, I'm greeted with this. http://puu.sh/eH5st/f784b0feb8.jpg Coming to a grand total of 27 people AFK all within walking distance of each other. That's not including people in other parts of the town, or people who choose to hide their AFK status. And that's only one city, in one part of one town, during one hour of one day. That being said, I don't know their reason, nor for how long or how often they go AFK. However, those people likely would have disconnected if there was some form of AFK disconnection, and that's, at the absolute bare least, upwards of 27 places where the server congestion would have decreased. Even over the course of an hour, that adds up remarkably fast. As for the arguements going on in this thread... I don't think OP made this thread to denounce people who go AFK, nor did they make this thread with the hope that SE would read it or do anything to remedy the issue. I believe the OP wanted to discuss their opinion of the issue, looking for opinions as to whether or not people should log off if they're going AFK for an extended period of time in order to free up a bit of the congestion, even if it's only a handful of people. It's more of a way to discuss and work together in order to remedy an issue in whatever way possible, even if that way may not make a big difference. People say "you shouldn't vent about that here because it won't do anything". Sure, because that isn't the goal of "venting". In all honesty, even walking up to SE headquarters and filing a complaint in person won't do anything. SE is a Japanese company, and unless you speak Japanese, the likelihood of someone with true authority at SE hearing your opinion, let alone acting on it, is abysmally miniscule. But that wasn't the point of the thread to begin with. Also, I didn't quit the game, I simply gave up trying to join an RP community.
  20. Unreal. Completely unreal. Third day in a row. Balmung's full at 5 o'clock in the morning on a thursday. why is there such a hassle to do something so simple? i just wanted to CREATE a character. were queues really this bad that they had to shit all over the new players by disabling character creation? something is terribly, terribly wrong with this server. how many people are actually playing? if this actually is because of bots, then oh my god, damn near a quarter of the entire population is bots. i'm defeated. i don't even care anymore.
  21. I tried at 2AM, 2:30AM, 3AM, 3:30AM, 4AM, 4:30AM, 5AM, 5:30A, 6AM It is now almost 7AM EST, and not for a single second was there any window of opportunity. Well, I'm done for tonight. I fucking give up. But hey, at least it shows me how many days are left on my subscription. I can literally count the days wasted trying to do something as simple as creating a character.
