Question: Do we consider paladins to be "Holy" magic users since HW came out? I ask because of Divine Veil, mostly. Clemency has some very holy-ish aspects to it as well. I don't think it's ever really been specifically said what type of aether a Paladin uses to do their spells, so I'm curious what others think about this.

I definitely see twin somethings. I'm probably not the first to make this joke, but I ain't even mad. Anyway, I like the artist's work!

Name: Rufus Wightman Type of date desired: Both Gender preference: Either for Female, Friendly for Male Brief description of your character: This Ul'dahn born midlander may possibly look intimidating, robed in black as he tends to be. But underneath that edgy exterior lies a heart of gold, and an amazing cook both. He's always up for deep and interesting conversations, and will more than likely to go lengths to make you feel really good about yourself emotionally with his kind words! ((MAY HAVE NOT PM'D THIS BECAUSE I'M A DUMMY. NAILAH, FIX IT.))

balmung Dark Knight w/o life skills seeking mentor/master
Rufus Wightman replied to Mi Ming's topic in Chronicled Connections
I'VE ALWAYS WANTED AN APPRENTICE! No, but all Sithness aside, my character is a Dark Knight himself, and very open to ensuring that other people don't get swallowed by their own dark side. He's also a mercenary by trade, with plenty of experience in the nitty-gritty ways of life, so he'd definitely be up to imparting his knowledge! -
balmung Refugee seeking housing, companionship
Rufus Wightman replied to freyaliesel's topic in Chronicled Connections
Wait, wait, wait. Hold everything. What is this you say? A refined, classy lady, who is also up to a brawl? You have got yourself a friend in Rufus, whether you know it or not. -
1) Desperation for conversation. That rhymed, but is also very true. Probably the biggest thing in his day-to-day life is being unable to find anyone to strike up a conversation with any real substance to it. 2) Hearing someone complain about things he also doesn't like. Makes him feel like his gripes are more valid, somehow. 3) If he sees someone in a spot of bother, or about to cause a spot of bother for someone else. Though he doesn't like to meddle all that much. 4) He sees someone else cooking food, and feels the overwhelming need to judge the end result, using his own very finicky guidelines. 5) Trying to find some small-scale work, in-between times where he feels he has absolutely sweet bugger all to do.

I kindly request a hug, because I'm about to go fucking ballistic if these 3.1 dungeons don't produce me any tank gear sometime soon. This emoticon displays perfectly how I feel: :frustrated:

The Screenshot Thread [Tag Your Spoilers]

"I may be young, but my body is ready." P.S. Someone get an artist to draw this. I will pay you all the loves. -
I mean, I wouldn't personally do something like bringing a character over from another world/universe or what have you. Sure, I like it in other forms of media like anime, for example. I dunno why, but that's always fascinated me. But when it comes to RP? I tend to find it's just better to keep things in-universe, even if they don't always make sense. It's part of the adventure, right? It just sort of sticks in my craw when a character is blatantly just a copy from another game. Like I think I saw earlier in this thread, or in one of the other threads that was linked, it feels like poor storytelling to make a character seem interesting. In my early days of RP, I remember seeing someone who was RPing a hyur that was actually an asura from GW2, that had somehow found their way to Eorzea, and my first thought was, "Why not just go RP on GW2 instead?". Feels kinda disrespectful to the people that've taken the time and effort to build the world to the point it's gotten to, I guess? And at the end of the day, does anyone ever take the crossover events as serious, canonical happens in the world? Especially with the fact that some events have found themselves repeated, it feels like it's more accurate to say it was just a fever dream of the WoL during the breaks from solving mysteries or saving the world - you know, casual WoL stuff.

Compliments Galore! Compliment The Poster Above You!
Rufus Wightman replied to Y'lani's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
I don't know who you are! But I figure it might be fun to jump in on this bandwagon anyway. Your portrait is really nice, for starters! Also, you rolled a 999. Color me suitably impressed and amazed. -

Main Character's Name: Rufus Wightman Link to wiki: https://wiki.ffxiv-roleplayers.com/pages/Rufus_Wightman Usually online: Too much. Like. Literally almost always. Intensity: Death Metal (Heavy, in other words!) Seriously, come say hi! I get all whiny when I don't have enough RP.

Interesting picks in this thread! I'd be lying if I said I hadn't considered a few myself. But in my case, I'd go for this for relatively unimportant fights: QEGlSBbLG5Y I'd probably choose for a boss fight: hu0ymRpWmYA Don't ask me why, but the dramatic lead-in is my jam.

I'm still not 100% sure how to treat soul crystals. As I pointed out in one of the DRK threads, and something I'm sure we can ALL agree on, is how vague and non-specific the lore on Soul Crystals are. They had to be made somehow, right? But how is it someone managed to craft a crystalline - presumably - hunk of aether in such a way that it became able to give the one it's bonded to additional strength and abilities? I can't really say. In my case, being a DRK, I thought it would be poignant to imagine the Soul Crystal as the coalescence of negative emotions, brought to the fore after being touched by darkness. It seemed fitting, I suppose. And perhaps a little -more- out there, I like to imagine when they call it a "soul" crystal, they literally mean that the crystal can be infused with the wielder's soul, taking residence inside their form, but can be removed at will. That's just how I do it, anyway. Not to discourage anyone else, of course!

[Spoilers] Dark Knights, Am I the Only One?
Rufus Wightman replied to -no longer matters-'s topic in RP Discussion
The first DRK didn't initially have it. Darkness (The Abyss) is inside of everyone, Fray says this himself. It's Dark Knights that apply themselves (or have a soul crystal) that can harness the darkness within. It's not genetics. It's aether. This form of Dark Knights is unique to Ishgard as far as Eorzeans know, but there's nothing explicitly stating it couldn't have existed anywhere else, because being a dark knight is a philosophy that incites the power, not a 'literal' class unless you can actually channel the abyss. However, yes, to be taught you'd have to learn from an Ishgardian that is one, loot a crystal from a dead body, or be so into being a knight that you go full murder-batman (I guess that'd be the Punisher) that you develop the power of your own accord while being fucked in the process. I'm sure there are other ways, but it takes creativity and a lot of strict attentiveness to the lore that is presented until more comes out (probably with the zodiac questline.) Oh, hello there. I just thought I would stop in quickly to point out that during the DRK quests, Fray points out that using DRK powers is not in fact the use of aether. He says it's "like weaving aether" or something along those lines, but not. I guess? Unless you're just talking about the crystal specifically. In which case, I'unno. It's easier to acquaint DRKs with the Sith, only with more tangible results from their negative emotions, from what we've been able to see. Honestly? This whole situation would be easier to gauge if Square did even the slightest explaining of what Soul Crystals were made of, and where they're made. As far as I know, anyway, it's not been explained. Part of me wants to justify it by saying that if a person has reached the height of their martial knowledge in any given branch, or experiences a strong rush of emotion, it can crystallize, therein conferring additional strength and abilities to the one it's bonded to. And they're subsequently passed down from master to student, or something along those lines. -
A LEGEND REBORN [BRONCO GREASE!]
Rufus Wightman replied to GloryRhodes's topic in Tonberry's Lantern (IC)
Rufus casually strolled through the Gold Court in Ul'dah, as though it was any other day for him. His gaze wandered to the fountain that served as the familiar centre piece of the area. A nostalgic smile spread across his lips as he seemed lost in thought for a moment. Just then, a peculiar thing caught his attention. A flyer left on one of the benches that surrounded the fountain itself. He approached at a casual pace, leaning down to pick the flyer up from the stone upon which it lay. He squinted his eyes, examining the piece of parchment for a split second before unconsciously bellowing, "Bronco Grease? This again?!" before he could even stop himself. He quickly looked about, a mild amount of panic written on his features. As it seemed his outburst had drawn no attention, he quickly poured over the remainders of the flyer, his eyes steadily growing wider as he did so. He abruptly took off in a quick jog, as his armoured form clanked noisily from the motions, the leaflet all but discarded. He raised a hand to his ear, activating his linkpearl as his voice raised once again. "Aeron! Aeron it's back! Put on your skimpiest outfit!" -
OP, you gotta start RPing lalafell more ruthlessly. Look at the lalafellin members of the Syndicate of Ul'dah. They're - by and large - a bunch of devious, underhanded buggers, who tear down those who don't think they're some form of threat. Lalafell can be damned scary, and not necessarily always with finance in mind. You ever seen a lalafell with a great axe, cleaving people into chunks on the field of battle? My character has. And he's shit-scared of them.

How can I hold all these roleplayer crushes?
Rufus Wightman replied to Meishali's topic in RP Discussion
To be honest? There's nothing to approaching another player for RP. Unless they're a totally bubble-esque douche, you're likely to receive a warm reception. It's not like there's some clique of elite-level RPers who only associate with others in the same group... I hope? I don't know. Either way, there's nothing to worry about! Just do the things! On the other hand, I find I tend to get quite annoyed when it comes to trying to get responses out of people in random RP. Let's use the Quicksand for this instance. It's mostly just AFK people 90% of the time, I tend to find. Either they're flat-out ignoring me, or whatever else they're doing, but it gets disheartening when you try your best to find some random RP, and keep getting knocked back with every attempt. -
I can't think of any time that's I've broken down and started to sob grossly, if I'm honest. There's RP that's made me pretty sad, though. It wouldn't be fun if there wasn't a whole array of feels to feel! On the other hand, there are times where I've become legitimately frustrated when I feel like my character is going nowhere, and it gets to me quite a lot. After all, it's not a lot of fun seeing other characters flourish, while you're left behind, is it?

Can you RP evil Dark Knight and have it lore friendly?
Rufus Wightman replied to Branson Thorne's topic in RP Discussion
I feel like alignment falls more to the character than the power they wield. But it's probably the case that a Dark Knight's darkness is quite likely to have an influencing factor, considering they bear their pain, fear and rage on their sleeves. I imagine it would be easier for Dark Knights to fall into the 'evil' category, given those factors, but I don't think it's impossible for a Dark Knight to be of a more pleasant disposition. My own character is just that. He's not going about cleaving at people for no reason, and is generally quite polite in casual conversation, but since the darkness awoke within him, he has become a bit more grey morally. So at the end of the day? I'd say go ahead. Most will think it's a bit stereotypical, or even cliché, but as long as you're happy with the character, then that's what matters. -
So, I dunno if anyone really gives a damn, but apparently this thread counts as an "absences" thread. I just thought I'd throw it up here. So last Wednesday, I pulled off the impressive feat of breaking both my elbows at the same time. Not majorly, of course. I can still type, as we can see. But the meds they put me on for the pain have this magical effect of making me drowsy 90% of the day, so I can't really in good conscience engage in public RP for a little while. I still love you guys, doe. No really. All the love.

Advertisement: BRONCO GREASE!
Rufus Wightman replied to GloryRhodes's topic in Tonberry's Lantern (IC)
Rufus stares blankly at one of the posters - particularly the one with the image of his colleague, Aeron, emblazoned on it, for several moments before finally moving his lips to speak, his tone one of mild astonishment and disturbance. "By the Twelve... -this- is what they were talking about back then? What in the name of all that is reasonable was he thinking when he signed up for this? It's not as though he's hard-off for coin... -wait, what does this...? 'When someone gets me in a tight spot, Bronco always loosens me up'...?" A light shudder rolls down the midlander's back, before he quietly and quickly shifting on his heels to face the other direction, calmly but briskly fleeing from the vicinity of the poster, the image burned into his mind's eyes forever more.
