PSA: If You Want to Romance RP, Don't Make Your Character A Minor.
allgivenover replied to Tiergan's topic in RP Discussion
I think the primary difference between myself and those here who think there are things about RP that should be off limits - the topic at hand - is that I view RP as a writing exercise, because being a writer was my first and lasting dream even though I'm a software developer now. I look at my RP as a shared narrative that I'm crafting with other people, and the simple truth of the matter is that most other RPers are far, far closer to their RP characters personally than I am to my own. So much so that when faced with something like this they simply cannot see it as anything but the other individual indulging a personal desire and rightfully feel revulsion and react with rejection. It's perfectly reasonable to expect that most would be this way and it's kind of silly how often I forget it. Honestly it was a little too much effort on my part even posting about it. It's not even anything that happens with Rakka'li, in fact the vast majority of the people he's been involved with have been older than him - in one case ten years older! -

I'm not sure why I'm being quoted and responded too about how creepers in the online world be creepin' and how often it happens. I'm not addressing that. It happens. I'm only addressing the ridiculous notion that you're going to land in jail portraying underage sex in your writing, even with another consenting adult. It's not going to happen. Edit: And that you should automatically age up your characters in the case that it might happen. This is ridiculous and unnecessary. -

No, they really don't in the United States at least. We have this thing called the first ammendment that criminalizing this would violate. As for your random fact, it's because virtual images have since been criminalized, but not written words, no one is talking about images here. As someone who's spoken with localizers before, I'm afraid I have to say that you're wrong on this one. Character ages do often get changed to over 18 before a work featuring, say, high school girls can be officially released in the US. Again, this is in the case of IMAGES, not written portrayals. If it applied to writing then several of the books on my shelf would land me in jail. Seriously I cannot believe you all think that a written portrayal can be criminalized in this way. Whether two adults collude to make it happen or one writes it on their own. I'm really kind of floored. Go pick up the first ASoIaF book in a bookstore and flip to the part where it goes on in detail on several occasions about a 13 year old Daenarys enjoying sex with Khal Drogo and tell me that two consenting adult Rpers are going to get in trouble for writing about underage encounters. You can read it right in the store! -

It's my understanding that the California law has only been used to pile on a case against someone who was already under investigation for child pornography, it has never been used against anyone who only wrote something, and if it was it would be challenged and dismissed in an appeal court. The fears about this are completely unfounded. EDIT: Also please don't mistake me, I'm not really getting in the discussion about if it's right or if it shouldn't be done, as that's completely up to personal opinion and doubtless there are those here who think me a monster for providing a dissenting view that I will never convince otherwise regarding this kneejerk issue. -

I think the sort of people that would do it to satisfy a fetish desire probably are not even reading this topic. They don't care about the merit of their RP, they are satisfying a fantasy. Like I said, I'm not defending pointless ERP that involves characters under 18. I'm only saying that the idea that two consenting adults writing out text can be criminalized for it is ridiculous and the idea that it's completely untouchable because some individuals are imposing themselves on others is a little misguided and would lead to witchhunts. -

Doubtless, fetishizing is happening and shouldn't be, but this is something that really has nothing to do with RP at all. It's just a problem imported from the outside world. My two points of disagreement is the idea that consenting adults could get in trouble for written portrayal, and that if there's any possibility that sexually charged RP can happen that you should age your character to whatever age your local government has deemed acceptable. That's needless and ridiculous. -

It's probably not in my best interest to post this, as I risk the attention of some misguided social justice warrior or the wrath of the thought police, but I can't help but comment. Disclaimer: I am not endorsing ERP involving children. First of all, if the written portrayal of minors in sexually charged situations is child pornography, then I can walk into any bookstore in the continental United States and buy child pornography right now, legally. Here's a few living authors that are child pornographers by this ridiculous definition: George R.R. Martin Anne Bishop Anne Rice Neal Stephenson Patrick Rothfuss Brent Weeks Steven King And these are just the few that I've recalled and read in the short moments I've spent typing this post. There are doubtless, countless others. The idea that a written portrayal can be categorized this way is completely ridiculous, and suggestions that you could get in trouble simply by ERPing it with another consenting adult is flat out ludicrous - though ERPIng with a minor could certainly get you in trouble, that's not what I'm addressing here. Secondly, let's check age of consent and what constitutes a minor for legal definitions. In the US it's almost universally 18 aside from a few cases where it's 16 or there are allowances for those close in age. For our friends in England, it's 16. In Iceland, 14 (I think?). My point in bringing this up is that age of consent is completely arbitrary and varies from place to place. Is everyone in Iceland a monster? What about England? They violate our well established idea that the magic number 18 is somehow indicative of a person's ability to handle sex, and that anyone that goes under this number is automatically a monster. Is the entire nation of England populated by child molester enablers? Third, Eorzea is a pre-industrialized place. I doubt they even have notions like age of consent. Don't mistake me as endorsing these activities, but even in the real world ideas like "teenager" and "adolescence" are modern notions. In Eorzea, unless you are educated and living in the city, it's very likely that no one cares how old you are after puberty. Fortunately for them, Square Enix is smart enough to avoid defining anyone's age to avoid upsetting the delicate sensibilities of modern culture (seriously how old are ANY of the characters?) Finally, and this is a sort of a broader topic but it's related and endlessly amusing for me, the vast majority of RPers are usually fine with participating in the following types of RP (especially when their character is the target, who doesn't love playing a victim now and then?): Torture. Kidnapping. Murder. Mutilation. Theft. Rape (so so very common in back-story). Violent conflict resolution. But violate some arbitrary number and idea about age of consent? Suddenly you are crossing the line. I'm not saying go out and have a fun time ERPing with underage characters, I'm just saying it's silly to draw the line here after everything else the average RPer is ok with. Are there people out there that are only doing this sort of thing to get their rocks off? Of course, and you'd rightfully avoid them. But are there people who are using this to tell a compelling story? Probably not very often, but it's possible. I don't consider anything off limits in my writing, and as my roleplaying is largely an extension of that I don't consider anything in roleplay off limits. -
My problem with fantasia potions is that if they were any sort of common in the game world then changing your.. well, everything would be something we saw happen all the time. So far it's completely absent from the lore aside from the fact that you can acquire it, use it, and it has flavor text. There is nothing in the world culture that reflects its availability, and this is problematic for me. Personally I prefer to ignore them totally, but we all know we are going to inevitably run into people who insist on using them in character (and worse, they will treat them as if they are common and that it's no big deal). In that case I just process it as Rakka'li would process someone telling him that they were Menphina, that is he'd think they were full of it. I'm not against using them alongside a name change to change your character into a different one entirely so that you can roleplay something else by the way.

Did this with a few endgame friends before servers went down. The challenge was a mystery until we got into Titan. 3m2Ums6oq6M As YoshiP might say.... http://www.myinstants.com/instant/yoship-so-easy/

Frankly I could do without it, they were mostly just ads for cybersex as I recall them from WoW.

Second Coil of Bahamut Turn 4 aka Turn 9 Text Guide?
allgivenover replied to Kage's topic in FFXIV Discussion
My best advice is to not try and memorize the entire turn in one go. Practice and study each part as it comes and don't worry about stuff that comes later. Practice, practice, practice! Do that until the first half of the fight is so easy it bores you, then repeat for heavensfall phase and divebombs phase. -
It looks so much better than the coil gear this time around.

To be clear, no one here is trying to dictate others RP or say that someone "can't" do it. What people are advocating is to consider that it might not be the best idea or to be careful about it. Even Rakka'li would be curious about Domans and ask questions that can't be answered without being ridiculously vague, and he is no scholar. He would only be curious like anyone else.

http://gamerescape.com/2014/10/22/fan-fest-2014-interview-with-michael-christopher-koji-fox/ A lot of interesting lore tidbits in here. Of particular note for me is the one about racial relations.

I can't go through the stream right now, but I do recall Sokken saying that the vocals were not finished.

Expansion Announced: Heavensward, releasing Spring 2015
allgivenover replied to Zyrusticae's topic in FFXIV News
I like the wordplay you can get from the name. Heavensward - toward the heavens. Going to the sky island, Ishgard, whatever. HeavensWard - to ward the heavens. Ward is an archaic way of saying guard or protect. -
It's a sound theory Merri.

Think I'm going to be in the minority here when it comes to liking it, and I do.

Are there any libraries in Eorzea?

This is exactly how it is for non adventurers. This is exactly what happened with the community. Also RPC post from fanfest. Woo. -
Flying to Vegas tonight, if you see a keeper cosplayer with this wig, it's me.

I have to give you some kudos for actually killing your character off. It's something that's rarely done in roleplay permanently. I had full intentions of pulling it in another game, but my friends managed to convince me not to go through it. Should have though, that would've been a better way for her story to end instead of what ended up happening.
-
...lol Edit: Not sure how the rest of my post was lost. I'd have to say there's something seriously wrong if people were actually angry OOC at you killing your character off or the player behind the character that did it. Our own characters kill other members of the five races all the time in the game story. It's not a big deal.

Sex and Your Character/Roleplay (NSFW Discussion)
allgivenover replied to Dat Oni's topic in RP Discussion
I'm all for it, and double so when it serves a purpose other than OOC satisfaction. More than a few times I've had Rakka'li engage because he has poor impulse control and wouldn't turn down the chance, though more than a few times I've been OOCly bored of what was going on. I'm not a fan of telling people how my character is, so instead of telling people that Rakka'li had a habit of jumping into bed frequently with women I had him actually do it IC. I think this earned him a solid reputation as a skirt-chaser and a charmer. To me this is way better than just writing that he "has a way with women" or something to that effect on his character sheet. I never insist on ERPing out an entire scene, there's been plenty of occasions where what happened was simply skipped over after deciding on the details OOC. Sometimes this has been a blessing for me as I don't think I could sit through every one of his encounters. After spending so much time building that reputation, I had an event occur that put him off casual encounters entirely. Now I'm having a good deal of fun breaking away from that expectation that a year of shameless skirt-chasing has built. So, in the end, yes. Sex has been a big part of roleplay with Rakka'li. He could not be properly byronic without it.
