You are absolutely correct. "Technically" it is 1577, but they divide their era's up. It's kind of like the Mayan calender. Once the calender comes to end it just resets and starts all over again. So it really is year 5 as its just a resetting of the calender which signifies the beginning of a new era. I actually edited my post and you may have not had the chance to check out the explanation ^^. Edit: Thanks for the history chart Merri. That one is much better...And...WHAT?!?! Shatotto! Sounds an awful like this really amazing character I used to know :3

Wheeeeeeee!! http://ffxiv.gamerescape.com/wiki/Guide:Loremonger/Timeline Edit: In short, it is technically 1577, but since the fall of Dalamud has brought about a new era it is the year 5 of the seventh Umbral era. It always rotates from Umbral to Astral, Umbral being some kind of time of hardship and Astral being a sort of calm age.

Just give me the beer . All these anti-dishwashers in here. I honestly don't mind doing dishes at all. I actually do them every single day in my house (how two people who rarely cook get so many dishes is still beyond me). The only thing I hate is washing greasy dishes. I just have a weird thing about getting my hands dirty. I will literally roll around in mud, as long as I didn't have to get it on my hands...don't know where I picked that up from. Luckily we don't cook with grease (in the rare occasions we do make something) and we both don't eat meat (which usually leaves greasy dishes) so it makes my life a ton easier. This thread has made me hungry twice today now...I gotta stop reading this stuff.

While it's really up to you in the end, the scenario you put out about Nidhogg and the Calamity is a bit impossible. The two events are separated by an extremely large time gap and someone experiencing the Nidhogg battle could not have also experienced the battle with the Garleans during the event of the fall of Dalamud. Now if you wanted to have your character witness some kind of dragon attack you could look up the Battle of Silvertear Skies that happened in Mor Dhona. The wiki says it happened 15 years ago, but now with the time skip it would have happened 20 years ago. It doesn't necessarily give you what you are looking for as it seems you are searching for something more Dragoon lore oriented, but it is the closest thing I can see as far as dragon battles go without breaking the lore. Also it was a battle between dragons and the Garleans and it took place in the sky so he would have likely not really participated in the battle, but may have witnessed it. Well that is...unless he fought for the Garlean Empire. Edit: If you need some help trying to fit your character somewhere I might be able to help if you want to message me. I am not a lore expert, but I know my way around.

Go ahead and live up your mothers cooking while you can. The real world is a harsh mistress. I have lived with over five different women in my short life and none of them really knew how to cook. Hell, I don't even know how to cook. I can microwave a mean burrito though, make sure its not frozen in the middle and everything. :moogle:

"Ah, this one is a tough one. I almost want to say Gridania because at least they seem united, but they literally have the Garleans beating at their door. Not to mention the forest spirit people or whatever getting all angry all the time. And Ul'dah, ha! Let's just say you'll have a better chance of making friends in an antling nest. Limsa wins by default! It's run by a bunch of ruffians, but it's not like it is lawless and at least they understand people's primal desire for freedom." Edit: Had to edit my post. Just realized it was suppose to be IC >.>

How was the Beastmaster in XI? And people have been telling me that Bard in XI is better than Bard in XIV is that true? And god I could I forget Time Mage and Geomancer. Time mage would make an excellent CC class. Beastmaster could charm/tame most monsters in the wild which was extremely helpful and the only class that was capable of any decent form of soloing as fighting anything above a tough on any job was basically a form of suicide (you could check monsters levels and they come back as too weak, easy prey, even match, tough, very touch, incredibly tough, depending on your level and theirs). Heck, soloing a tough was pretty damn risky and very difficult. They also had items that could summon special forms of monsters that leveled alongside the beastmaster. I only got my beastmaster to the mid 50's though as my charms sometimes missed monsters and then they would get upset and kill me. I couldn't handle the constant death, hahaha, but I really did enjoy the class. And yes, Bard was way better in XI. It was a very heavy support class that could cast AoE songs that ranged from sleep, regening hp and mp (it was necessary to have a class that could regen everyones mp), increase attack/spell power/accuracy, and weaken monsters to certain elements. You could only have two songs on the enemy and two on the party though. Playing the class was all about positioning as you wanted your casters to have MP refresh and your melee to have attack power up/accuracy up/whatever and your songs only had a certain range from your body. So you had to keep up two songs on everyone (separating people into small groups since most buff songs were AoE and you didn't want to give melee MP refresh) which wore off after a few minutes, then sometimes had to pull monsters in between all of that, helping with back up heals if your sub job was a white mage, and occasionally doing a bit of crowd control if monsters linked together when you pulled them back to camp.. And some people on the beta forums say that there was no strategy and skill in XI hogwash. Bards were way weaker in XI than in XIV and had basically no real DPS output, but I remember PvPing against one and he was a giant pain in the ass. He was a Bard/Red Mage and would weaken me against elements (like earth) and then disable and debuff the hell out of me (casting slow which is an earth based debuff). Overall I definitely think bard in XI was a lot better than what we have now, but I am slightly biased as I love playing support classes.

(Your name) Has Joined the Party!
LandStander replied to RaylenorSelzen-akaga's topic in RP Discussion
You should get together with this fine guy Faceman7381. He was one of the first people I ever started speaking with when I joined the RPC and he was trying to start the same thing. I am unsure of what ever came about it though. He started a group The Seven if you wanted to check that out as well to see if the both of you all's ideas mesh up together ^^. Edit: Lovely picture by the way :3. They need to release a new one that is decent. RTK has been in the pits with the last two releases . -

Legacy Players: Keeping Old Character or Starting Fresh?
LandStander replied to Salty Lake's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Ah! Don't take my word for it. I am not sure. I was under the impression that we could change names, but I am hoping someone can clear this up for us. I hope we can change our character names. I had plans for my 1.0 character as a possible alt somewhere down the road . As far as the Legacy thing goes you had to have been playing for 3 months when they were charging people a minor monthly fee. The free time didn't count. I think you still get early access and such because I am pretty sure that was for anyone who played 1.0. According to the website this the only thing Legacy players get: 1. Players can continue to play FFXIV post-2.0 for the legacy price. 2. Players will receive a special chocobo when FFXIV 2.0 officially launches. 3. Players can request to have their names places in the FFXIV 2.0 credits. You are on the Legacy servers because you played 1.0 and they are basically servers for anyone who played 1.0. The mark is just a tattoo on your back that signifies that you are a 1.0 character and that you were in the final battle and time traveled. The whole Warrior of Light shabang -
Legacy Players: Keeping Old Character or Starting Fresh?
LandStander replied to Salty Lake's topic in FFXIV Discussion
My character was level 30+ in everything except fishing (which was like 18 or something), but I am making a new character. I thought about changing my old characters appearance and just keeping the levels, but meh. I thought we could change names? Or did I just make that part up =X? -
You would surprised at just how low quality it is...

The greying of the MMO and what does it mean for RP players?
LandStander replied to hypatiala's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Wow, I'm not really sure there's an opinion I could possibly disagree more with than this. In my view Guild Wars 2 is a freakish hybrid between tab-target and a proper-action game that should never have existed, a disgusting Frankenstein of a creation that tries to do everything and fails at everything. They lack the strong tells and intuitive hit detection of proper action games, and they lack the depth of play of trinity-focused tab-targeting MMORPGs, putting it in an awful twilight zone where it just doesn't do anything well. Or at least, that's how I feel about it. Obviously it worked for you, but as far as combat systems go it is VERY high on my list of 'most hated combat systems ever made'. As far as I'm concerned, you either go all the way in one direction, or you go all the way in the other, but you should never just compromise if it means your product becomes an indistinguishable, tasteless mess. Somebody really hates GW2 :3. I definitely have tons of complaints about the game and its mechanics, but I think the overall feel of solo combat was pretty refreshing and a nice compromise. Party combat basically didn't exist as it was kind of an every person for his/herself type system with no real roles to play. I don't think I ever experienced any trouble with hit detection and thought the monster tells were perfectly fine. I really don't pay attention to hit detection that much anyway though. It's either I moved or I didn't move out of the way and left it at that, lol. I think action combat will become more and more prevalent in MMO's as it seems like the industry thinks that is the new "big thing". I think I have always hated Tera because of their absolutely horrid marketing campaign and commercials. I remember logging in during open beta and immediately running into griefers who constructed an impassable wall of giant guys blocking a bridge that you needed to walk by in the start area...I logged out and uninstalled right after that because I had a feeling that their marketing campaign would have just attracted those type of people and I was right. I did start playing during their free to play model, but only got to like 30 or 40's before I got bored with the combat system and the grind (and I generally enjoy grind, like FFXI type grind, but I just couldn't get into this one). I have honestly been really interested in these MMO's that these small studios and indie developers have been coming up with and hope that it will break the new industry standard of theme-park high stress action MMORPGs. -
Final Fantasy XIV: The Animated Series <3 great work here

Check out the LS I am in. I joined for the very same reasons you listed. We were talking about the top end game linkshells on Balmung from 1.0 and how we hopefully plan to be on that list as well. Luckily they don't force anyone to do endgame which I think is a relief because I hate being told what to do and when to do it >.> /anarchy. Some members have also taken the liberty of already discussing strategies for end game dungeons with what we know so far about the game. They are also lovers of PvP if that floats your boat as well ^^ Night Blades I am sure a decent amount of RP shells/companies are planning on doing some endgame stuff as well though. And you can always browse around the "Linkshells" tab at the top of the website ^^

The greying of the MMO and what does it mean for RP players?
LandStander replied to hypatiala's topic in FFXIV Discussion
I'm okay with the tab targeting-esque style that SE has decided to implement. I have played Tera and other action oriented combat games and think that they were nice for awhile, but I usually always end up going back to something a little more slower and turn based. I personally would prefer the current system to be slightly slower so I can actually type, but I guess I will have to buy a mic and actually speak online *remembers the days of having to talk to people over Xbox Live* . Something about actually giving planning my moves out has always appealed to me; probably because that is the kind of RPGs that I have been raised on. I personally think GW2 had a much better combat system than Tera. It had a nice amount of action with dodging, jumping, etc., and it was not overwhelming with a bizzilion hotkeys to press. If only they had some kind of endgame that existed that was outside of PvP. Edit: In response to the article I think its a bit bs. Its saying that people in their 30's and 50's can't keep up with teenagers in gaming because they have dulling senses when the opposite would be true. It has been scientifically proven that gamer's have faster reflexes and also have a much lower chance of acquiring brain degenerative diseases such as Alzheimers. I'm personally just more lazy than I was 10 years ago and don't want to keep myself in a high stress twitch kill environment like I was back in high school when Counter-Strike was all the hype. That is the reason why I have a job to help the greying of my hair :3 -
1. Thief 2. Fencer 3. Beastmaster 4. Geomancer 5. Time Mage or some kind of hard support class. But seriously, just give me thief and I'll be happy. Edit: Speaking of Fencer and 1.0 DAT files; there was also the file for Shepard in there which I hope they end up turning into a Beastmaster class. I don't think those two files exist in the 2.0 beta files that we have seen so far though.

All hail the Viangaa! I personally think both the races were fine, but it would be too weird to have more fandom with bunny girls when we already have cat people. Plus I think Yoshi-P said he was kind of against it as he didn't like the idea of male Viera. I think if they release a new race at anytime they should just make one from scratch and not pull them from any other universe. I would have personally loved for all new races in 14, but I understand that they were going for familiarity and I'm a sucker for nostalgia myself :3.

Transgender FtM Top Surgery Fundraiser
LandStander replied to Gone4everbye's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
I didn't realize we had such a large transgender community here ^^. I bookmarked your page and will pass around to some of my like-minded friends. School is starting in about 2 weeks and I had to front all the money for books and classes so I am living off of pocket lint (which sadly the grocery store doesn't seem to consider bartering material), but I should be back on my feet in a month so I can donate then. Edit: Just wanted to add..Asmodian Santa !!! lololol -

A question in regards to Free Companies
LandStander replied to Arelian Solin's topic in FFXIV Discussion
I agree with Naunet on this one, but I highly doubt that Free Company names will be taken as they seem to be pretty unique in itself. I feel like it gives non-Legacy players another reason to complain and hate us. As far as the level 20 thing goes, Legacy players will retain their levels because they want them to test the PvP arena which is only 30+. I also don't think that you need to do any story missions, especially no story missions from 1.0 as a lot of those are all basically null and void, (even though I heard that they were going to allow Legacy players to view those cutscenes in their homes) to unlock Free Companies. The thing is, as far as most quest and story missions go, Legacy players have to repeat all that content all over again because its almost literally a new game. -
You are absolutely correct! He did say it was a quasi form of the language. Thanks for the feedback. Maybe if I don't get too lazy I will try writing up a little phrase book or something. Looking at the dictionary I can totally see which words Fernhawles came up with. Iron ---> Iyrn, Sword ---> Swerd, hahahaha . I see a few words that have stayed completely German: Dog ---> Hund, Steel---> Stahl. I have no idea how they got Holsk from Fast though :dazed:. I need Fernhawles email to see what kind of patterns he used lol. You are probably dead on with the whole mother thing. He added an r at the end of Hund to make Hundr, though it was in parentheses, and seems to follow this rule with a few different words.

I suppose this would be a good spot to post something like this as I don't like starting new threads for some reason. Since it has been stated that Roegadyn names are influenced by an old version of the Germanic language (a lore team in Germany actually helped write up the Roegadyns) and this is one of the few races we actually have with a few translated words (their names) do you think that for the most part their language might have been Germanic as well? I ask this because I have been playing my Roegadyn as someone who still speaks and understands the native language (having a large influence from her traditional grandfather). Though it's not like she would have full blown conversations with people, she just sometimes blurts out Germanic phrases; like calling people idiots in German. Do you think this is bending the lore too much and I should just drop it? And to add to your lore thing Syggfryd. The wiki states that the Hellsguard lived by a volcano which they guarded the gates to believing it was some kind of gate to the underworld. They stand guard there making sure the souls of the dead don't return back to the land of the living. Sea Wolves were island dwellers and Hellsguards were mountain people ^^. 12:08 is when he starts talking about the Roegadyn stuff with I think somewhere around 11 minutes he will pronounce Merlwyb Bloefhiswyn's name and a few others Here is the old lore forums as well in case anyone wanted to look around. http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/forums/491-Lore And this guy on youtube does a pretty good job with summing up Roegadyn lore ^^.
