Welcome! As someone who started their RP career with GW2 I understand your worries, but this community here is really great. If you have any questions about anything please message me and I will help you the best way I can, because I was in the same boat as you were around the same time last year.

I wouldn't use Plato as a way to measure common ancient greek thought because, in "The Republic", he writes about how men and women in the Republic would have the same rights, study and train together as equals. And this is something that was said by a man living in a society were women were basically regarded as property. As we all know, that din't really change that much in ancient Greece after Plato. He was way ahead of his time in much of his thought. In any case, the bit you mention talks about 'love between men' which, once you consider the concept ancient greek had about love (as I mentioned, the word for 'lover' and 'friend' are the same because, for the greek, a friend is someone who loves you), is more akin to our modern concept of friendship. I'd have to get the book and read it again to offer a more concise interpretation, but that's what I remember from back then. And I'm also lazy and don't like to read, so I won't hold my horses. Lol. My interest is definitely peeked. I will have to research this topic more. It will help me get in study training in preparation for when school starts back up...on release day *shakes fist at SE for choosing a horrible release date*.

Really? Even in Platos, "The Symposium", he writes about homosexuality. They go on to describe it as more natural and more manly than actually being with a woman. I am paraphrasing here, but he wrote something like "what is more masculine then wanting to be with someone who is masculine as well". I probably butchered the hell out of it, but its pretty much the same thing. Though I know they were talking a lot about boy/old man relationship. Even the men in the play are all attracted to Socrates and Alcibiades is literally head over heels for him and spends the entire time trying to get in his pants.

It's interesting that you bring up the Edo period in Japan. Homosexuality (among men at least as there are no records about women) was very widely accepted. It was actually very similar to the Greek and Roman philosophy at the time. Two men, usually a young student and his master, would actually have a sexual relationship and pledge to never cheat on each other with other men, but it was okay for both of them to go out and marry a woman.

What is you're favoite Final Fantasy Song?
LandStander replied to Kellen whitewolf's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
I have personally never played Crisis Core because I never had a PsP (Come on SE! Hurry up and port this over to the Vita!!), but I really really like the music from it. The soundtrack has this really awesome western rock feel to it. These two are my favorite. MOJ91H4mraU eb6MF0IfsvQ Edit: I take it back. My favorite song out of all the series is Cosmo Canyon. -
I think you are giving America too much credit. They are not far ahead as you have stated, but are somewhere in the middle. South Africa, New Zealand, Iceland, Canada, Denmark, Brazil, Argentina, and a lot of others have already passed laws allowing it. I am going with Naunet on this one. If they just add it and don't make a big fuss about it then no one will care, just like they did with Rift. I didn't expect that they would allow it and I honestly do not think they will ever allow if. If they were sincere about it then they would have added it at the beginning. If a movement to allow it would start to ramp up you would then get a movement to not allow it and then SE would just take a neutral stance and do nothing about it (just like the RPC has done with the whole primary and secondary server thing). I would not get my hopes up if someone was hoping for this feature. I will try to keep politics out of my post as I sometimes get a bit crazy, (I can't help it though. I worked in a local political firm for 4 years >.o) but I think they are dropping the ball on not allowing it. Felix and Armi are right about Japanese culture being very conservative (at least the old people who run the country are) so the management of SE Japan is also probably holding back this decision. Edit: Just realized everything has pretty much been cleared up and everything I said has already been said before >.>. Just go along people, nothing to see here.

So this is sort of on topic and I didn't want to start a new thread. I noticed a decent amount of us want to play a villain or alt that is a villain and I was thinking of how we could possible unite our villains together so instead of just causing trouble for one group (which would more than likely be our respective FC's and LS') we could cause trouble for everyone. Now it took me a bit to think about how and why villains would unite as they normally tend to be pretty selfish and do their own villain thing. Then I remembered there was that cult back in 1.0, the Lambs of Dalamud, who kidnapped people and used them to lure adventurers into traps because they thought sacrifices would attract Menphina's Loyal Hound (I am guessing this will be Cerberus one day, or at least I hope so). I was thinking that cults and religious things like that are the easiest way to bring people together. I was wondering if anyone would be willing to start some kind of villainous cult with me on the Balmung server (as that is where I will be playing) just to cause conflict in the world and be something that could give RPers a PC to fight with. Of course it would all start out as secret, but maybe as people allowed their characters to get kidnapped (probably not killed as a lot of people wouldn't be okay with that) then the cults actions would become more and more known. And seeing as most of us will be playing these villains as our alts we probably wouldn't care so much about character death (I'm not saying that everyone would die, but it adds a bit to the drama). Or we could even start some group that are secretly all Garleans and have infiltrated Eorzea and are trying to bring it down from the inside. So would anyone be interested in this idea or would like to discuss this maybe further?

I really like this idea and think you should give it a go. I'm slightly biased though as my character loves to gamble and I could see her constantly going to get her fortune read.

New comprehensive FFXIV-ARR character & demographic multi-site survey
LandStander replied to Neon's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Do my eyes deceive me? So far most people are going to be playing a white mage? That is unheard of in MMOs, no more shouting for healers . In mother Final Fantasy, white mage shouts for you. -
I just felt like you had to watch this. There is a bit of language in it so NSFW? X5Izm1LQfw4

I am up in the air about this. I like the idea of class specialization, but being someone who loves to play and try out all jobs (except usually main tank jobs) it kind of stinks. Though I wonder if stats will really make that much of a different. I don't recall them being that significant in 1.0.

Server guidance for those new to the community
LandStander replied to Miss Marigold's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
I have been pretty much neutral in this whole server thing the best way I can, but I am definitely behind you on this one. The last time they did this it lead to a lot of new people coming on the site and thinking that Balmung was ONLY for legacy and Gilgamesh was where all the new people should go to. And many websites are literally posting things that just say Balmung is for Legacy, Gilgamesh is for non-legacy. Such as this topic on gamespot. http://www.gamespot.com/final-fantasy-xiv-online-a-realm-reborn/forum/official-unofficial-rp-server-66919919/ Luckily we have had much more time to try to correct this back when the RPC decided to stay very vague last time on the server subject, as we had like a month and a half in advanced to get everything sorted out. Now I understand the want for the admins to want to appear neutral and I am sure they are in a stressful situation, but I constantly feel like the players on Balmung keep getting the short end of the stick when it comes to this topic. If anything the RPC, the major RP hub basically for RP in FF, should be a little more clear than all the other websites floating around. Edit: Ah, somehow my quote thing disappeared when I posted >.>, but it was regarding Aysun's comment. "Great. Thanks for clarifying that. Because it's totally okay to offend people on Balmung by bending over backwards to be neutral, after it was stated to all of us that when we decided that we'd support a secondary server that it would be called that, for the sake of our community." -
New to RP?!? Everyone throw your tomato's at em! We don't want you here!!! I kid, I kid! Welcome! There is a mentor program going on here still (I think) where someone can show you the ropes and give you a run down of basic information. I can't claim to know everything as I really didn't pay attention to much lore in 1.0, but I know enough to get around and will be more than happy to help you out. We can either message here or I can send you my information to talk on Skype if you have any questions

Adopt a Roegadyn last name. All you have to do is bang on your keyboard a few times and click "Okay". Try it !

these are some question about the miqo te?
LandStander replied to Kellen whitewolf's topic in FFXIV Discussion
There is no mention about the life span of any race? I thought I read something about Elezen living for hundreds of years...or am I now confusing Elder Scrolls lore with Final Fantasy lore >.> or maybe FFXI lore with XIV?? Maybe it was the Padjal that live for a long time? :dazed: Ah! Found it!...kind of... at least the Elezen part. "They are also possessed of a somewhat extended lifespan in comparison to the Hyur. " http://ffxiv.gamerescape.com/wiki/Elezen Well...I haven't been any help to this thread . Time to go to bed for me! -
Glad you escaped from WoW and I hope that you can severe chain that it tightly coiled around your soul in an attempt to drain the life out of you so that you may never have the desire to return again. Welcome!

It's like M. Night Shyamalan's career. No matter how much you want it to go away it will always be around ; ;!!! *curls into the fetal position and rocks back and forth while crying*

I really like the guild flag thing, very nicely made!

I think when it comes to situations like this you can always look at real life sociology to help answer it.I say keep it because we see things like this happen in our society everyday, especially in America where there are tons of people from different backgrounds and cultures mixing together. She could have had parents who wanted to make it easier for her to assimilate into society outside of her home land and gave her that name. Heck, the Hellsguard ditched their Roegadyn names for something that could be spoken more easily in the common tongue. Dennthota becomes Thunder Daughter in the common tongue. I have a friend whose family came straight from Guam, but her name is Sheryll and a friend from Japan with the name Rick, both very European American names. Nothing wrong with having a name outside of lore, especially if its a name that is very Hyur sounding as Hyur are the dominate race in Eorzea. Now you would probably need a decent story if your Miqo'te had say a Lallafell or Elezen based name.
-
I thought that is how all of us Roegadyn characters came up with our names lol. The lore guys said their names were German influenced so it could be why it looks insane. You can go Sea Wolf with a Hellsguard name if you wanted to, but I think your name is perfectly fine. The Hellsguard still basically name themselves the same way as the Sea Wolves, but just say it in a different tongue because they are usually mercenaries and such and have to deal with different races more often. You can have a nickname as some people have said or you can just have people call you Steel or whatever. I thought about having people call my character, Dennthota Ahtahrmwyn, just Thunder, but then realized Denn was not that bad. And Asyria, Agata's last name is insane lmao. I love it. I don't even know how to begin going about to pronounce that one.

This is actually an interesting question and I am pretty sure Gilgamesh will have a higher population because of all the big servers that are going there, the Redditors probably outnumber the entire RPC, haha. But there will still be a higher RP ratio there. On another note, when I was transferring my character from Masamune to Balmung (just to have the character as an alt as I liked the way they looked) the server transfer application indicated that the server population was Very High. I am not sure if this just means that they were only taking in a certain amount of character transfer to leave some open room for new players or what. But seeing as the game is relaunched and lots of people will be coming back to check out the game or play it, I would not be worried much about this.

I think I hit 40 or maybe a bit over it, but never did any primal battles (as I sort of quit before the primal battles came out, but came back for a bit, leveled, but couldn't get my LS to run the level 30 primal battle with me as they were more interested in the end game dungeons and primal battles so I just quit again) and didn't do any dungeons except that level 30 one, Totorak or whatever. I played for a year but crafted mostly because the combat was bad...back when it took me 2 or 3 five hour days to craft down a ton of buffalo and sheep skins :frustrated:....I guess the crafting was just as bad, hahaha. I think most of my play time was accumulated in Ul'dah, lol.
