  1. I really really recommend at least registering an account and using the web client (no installation necessary). It's pretty impossible to hold real-time discussions or make private announcements over a public forum - likewise to make lasting announcements over an in-game linkshell. I will continue to post public linkshell news here, but there will always be stuff that happens in Discord that won't be posted about here, due to the public nature of the thread.
  2. Just dropping in quickly - I wrote this post a little while ago on how obscure the various soul crystals are - here's what I put for BLM: Tier 5: Illegal - those in possession without permission from the authorities will be marked for death Region: Mhach Era: Fifth Astral Era Discipline: Black Magic How to obtain: Mhachi ruins, or get lucky and loot one from a corpse. If your character is high-ranking law enforcement - especially Order of Nald’thal - it’s possible they could come into contact with one via confiscated contraband. Challenges: Black magic is highly illegal and easily detected, due to the method which it uses to draw aether for a spell. It’s also lethal when attempted without a soul crystal. Because of this last fact, soul crystals are in high demand by outlaws with a lust for power, so those who take the black must be prepared to not only live outside the law, but also to defend themselves from all sorts.
  3. Obligatory monthly "still here, still open for recruitment" message! To members (current and future): please feel free to bring forth your Rogue-themed storyline ideas in the Discord; it's much easier for us to help run your stuff than it is for us to constantly come up with stuff on our own! That said, I do have a few idea seeds for the future. Please look forward to it.
  4. My turn to double-post! Just Sastasha normal, I am in a 3/4 premade (AST/BRD/BRD) and the 1 is the tank (DRK). He comments on how high our DPS is and the healer encourages him to pull more. We end up pulling like half the room at once in most of them. We get to the last room and the healer is like, "Let's just pull the whole thing and ranged LB it." The tank is like hey if you're down! And me and my friend DPS are like HELL YEAH LET'S DO IT. So we do it. About half way through everything's HP pool I realise that I have an awful lot of aggro! At first I think it's just because I've been quicknocking too much but then I glance over at the aggro table to see how far ahead I am and I see the tank is dead. So is the other bard. (Not sure how I managed to miss that!) So, because I played WoW for ten years, I start kiting. I hit anything I lose aggro on to the healer until it's attacking me again, and I keep kiting... and I keep kiting... all the way to when the tank and other bard rejoin us. It was so fun. I don't think I've had that much fun clearing Sastasha synced in ever. And I got the tank's comm.
  5. Aghurlal's family situation is a little bit complicated, but here are essentially his parents...
  6. I think my au ra dude is pretty cute? HOT TIPS based on general principles of "cute" things being round, soft, with big eyes and an innocent look: If you want EZ mode, use the face preset I used (the one with the "satellite wing" horns). Pick large, open eyes. Pick level or raised eyebrows (my dude breaks this one, but w/e, it suits him). Large irises. Limbal rings optional - leaving them off can actually emphasise their size. Pick jaw options that give a short chin and rounded cheeks. Pick a nose that is rounded and/or upturned. Try to avoid mouths that look too stern. Bigger lips can help with this (thinner ones can look pursed in irritation). Use face paint around the eyes - or a darker skintone - to hide or lessen the natural shadows under/around the eyes. Pick a hairstyle that emphasises roundness in the face. TL;DR go through all the options, pick the roundest and/or softest-looking one. Now... cute highlander dudes... that's something I'd like tips on. I had to shove my 19yo on a midlander model because I couldn't make him look under about 40 on the highlander one...
  7. I believe about 1 in 10 Miqo'te children is born such that he is assigned male? (I could be wrong there but I'm using that ratio as the example for the rest of my post for ease's sake.) As you say, the lore naming conventions for Keepers provide suffixes for up to the 10th son. But statistically, because Keepers aren't born in a 1:1 gender ratio like humans, that means that 10th boy would have 90 sisters from the same mother. So, then... it's more likely that for a 10th son (or, y'know, 5th son) to be born, either some of his older brothers were identical twins (allowing 2 boys to be born from 1 pregnancy - potentially placing your 5th son within the "2 or 3 pregnancies" thing), or that particular branch of the family is an anomaly in whatever it is that causes Miqo'te children to normally be born at a 1:9 gender ratio. The fact the suffixes exist and are apparently in enough knowledge that they're a unified convention across all Keepers of the Moon suggests both that it has happened at some point, and that the occurrence is either famous or (while rare overall) common enough that it was remembered.
  8. I... think... the items of clothing in question are the spellcaster AF1 sets? I have a faint recollection of SMN, SCH, and BLM artefact outfits being described in quest texts as having been woven in such a fashion as to protect and/or enhance the user. I don't really have any quotes on hand so I can't confirm, but maybe that's a place to start looking?
  9. This isn't super on topic but you can actually change the amount of time it takes for your character to go to their cpose. Default is 5 seconds, but I have mine set to 1 second.
  10. Halatali normal. Very small young early tank. Me as 35-ish BLM, other DPS is horrendously overgeared DRG, healer (mentor, 100% silent throughout) is Helios-happy AST. Hi Jeffrey I am afraid. After I tank most of the first boss - despite the tank being appropriately geared for the instance - I tentatively test the waters by asking the tank to use Flash more. Half the time this results in me being cussed out or just straight up ignored. The tank doesn't reply to me, but I see him starting to use Flash more... so I think... maybe there's hope? I notice he's using Riot Blade a lot and considering he's not holding aggro, I slightly less tentatively suggest he switch to Savage Blade. And he actually does! At some point he actually speaks and admits he's brand new to tanking, so I start to give a bit more advice. I run through a standard Tanking For Newbies pull - suggest he uses Shield Lob instead of Provoke to open, then Flash basically until his mana bar is empty, then cycle through mobs doing Fast Blade > Savage Blade on each of them in turn. He follows my advice and becomes noticeably better at holding aggro as we go through the dungeon. Like... pulls went from being a total mess where I + the healer were tanking 90% to being about what you'd expect from a low level dungeon where the tanks don't have stance yet. We lost the healer after the second boss (she ninjAFK'd and we had to kick her... some mentor, lol) but the new healer was a cool WHM who didn't spam Medica, so the last boss actually went without any hitches at all. And guess who walked away with 3/3 comms? As BLM? This cool cat. ✌ The tank got my comm, despite the rocky start. The other two we finished the dungeon with were cool too, and I would've comm'd all three if I could - but the tank's can-do attitude won me over, even if his skills were initially lacking.
  11. The Coco brothers and, yeah, the MSQ example at the end of 2.0 are the only ones I can think of where a character is possessed and then subsequently freed from that possession. The MSQ example features an Ascian (not a Voidsent) and involves using an obscene amount of aether - like, an amount available only to the WoL - to damage the possessing being, separating him from his host. But Ascians don't work the same as [classic] Voidsent do. They're a distinct type of being. The Cocos' example also involves using a large amount of aether, but in this example, it wasn't used against the possessing being (an actual Voidsent this time) - it was used to tempt her. She, a succubus, was occupying the host body (a male lalafell) as an interim, while she gathered the aether necessary to manifest her true form. The trap was thusly: a powerful mage offered himself as tribute. She consumed his aether, consumed the nearby bodies of some women she had already killed, then willingly abandoned the host body to assume her true (more powerful) form. Finally, the Warrior of Light and the other Coco brothers banished the voidsent by defeating her in combat. The powerful mage in question almost died as a result of her consumption: His life was only saved by the effects of an experimental mana-amplifying potion, which was originally developed to try and aid those of low aetheric potential in becoming mages (yet fell short of achieving such). Essentially, the technique allows things to get worse (the voidsent fully manifests, a large quantity of aether is consumed) before it gets better. Unless you can be certain of your capability to defeat the voidsent in question - this one was faced by the Warrior of Light and some of the most highly qualified thaumaturges in Eorzea - it's possible that you might be freeing the person in exchange for unleashing a powerful monster. It's a payoff that's... well, I guess it makes for an interesting question: would you save your friend if it meant endangering other people? But for a professional voidhunter, as harsh as it sounds, maybe not the favoured technique for dealing with possession. It involves too much risk to the lives of many, simply for the life of one. It involves offering up an amount of aether relative to the power of the voidsent - collecting this is risky in itself. And I can only imagine there's no guarantee that the voidsent will leave the host body unharmed, either - if it's already sustained injuries not compatible with life, or if the Voidsent takes too much aether with it when it goes, then I think the host would perish anyway.
  12. Honestly, if they have the server resources to spare, I'd much rather they put them into additional housing instances. >_> As far as I'm aware, housing is the other big load in the instance servers besides dungeons - so it's kind of an either/or thing there. Maybe some kind of extender would work - if you're at keyboard, when it gets to 5 minutes remaining, a pop-up appears with the option to extend your instance another 90 minutes up to a maximum of 2 times (creating a maximum instance length of 270 minutes, or 4hr30). I just don't think indefinite dungeon instances is something that's practical to ask for. It's got too much room for exploitation (because you can bet it'd take less than a week for someone with beef with FFXIV to try and attack the game by mass-occupying instances in a DDoS-style attack).
  13. Dungeons need those timers to kick people out of the instance should they either fail to complete, go AFK, or for other session-related reasons. Without that dile kick, players could theoretically fill up all the available instances and then the Duty Finder would never be able to complete or might just crash. In unsynched dungeons, the reasons you posted don't really matter. I'm also not talking about the ten minute timer kick. I'm talking about the, "You only have 90 minutes to complete this dungeon," timer. In an unsynched dungeon, it's a little redundant unless you're attempting to complete a dungeon to test how fast you can, and in that case it'd just be nice to have an ability to toggle it off. ./shrug I think Mercenary was talking about from the server side. Let's say 100 people all decide to go into their own unsynced dungeon and turn the timer off. That's now 100 instances stored on FFXIV's servers that are tied up in people essentially just AFKing, taking screenshots, etc... indefinitely. There is no AFK timeout in FFXIV. They could sit in those instances for weeks, tying up resources that could be being used for those wishing to play the game to progress their MSQ, improve their gear... Now let's say 1000 people decide to do that. Now let's say 10,000 people... It becomes a resource issue. The 90 minute time-out prevents that.
  14. Recent Making Connections threads for servers other than Balmung: Adamantoise Sargatanas Famfrit Faerie Linkshells for servers other than Balmung But personally, if you're after an established and consistently active community, especially one that operates at most hours of the day, then my recommendation is to count on paying the transfer fee into Balmung. (Yes, paying for a transfer will let you circumvent the character creation limitation, despite what the documentation says. You can bring a full load of 8 characters for one fee.) Think of it like a cover fee for a night club (that then applies for every single night for as long as you play the game), or like the RP DLC.
  15. I pitched my question here: I tried to keep the wording as neutral and non-leading as possible so's not to betray my terror to try and invite an open answer. >.>;;
  16. I do this too, which is why I was so adamant that ISTJ is the wrong personality type for Aghurlal (with the correct one being INTJ). If it wasn't, I sincerely doubt he'd be in the profession he is (Rogues' Guild agent); I feel an ISTJ Aghurlal would've picked something more grounded and focussed on concrete goals, and less in achieving nebulous stuff like "justice". ...I also think he'd be less paranoid, and a lot calmer. His intuition is currently a source of, among other things, most of his anxiety. If he didn't have that tendency to extrapolate based on patterns and ideas, then his anxiety wouldn't manifest in the same way. ANYWAY since I'm here again I'll take the test for some of my other characters and then disregard the results except the A/T distinction: Telluric Medic INTJ-A "THE LOGICIAN" (INTP-A) Logicians pride themselves on their inventiveness and creativity, their unique perspective and vigorous intellect. Usually known as the philosopher, the architect, or the dreamy professor, Logicians have been responsible for many scientific discoveries throughout history. In total fairness to both myself and the quiz, the J/P proportions it gave her were 54 to 46. Caidenden Caiden "THE LOGISTICIAN" (ISTJ-A) Their defining characteristics of integrity, practical logic and tireless dedication to duty make Logisticians a vital core to many families, as well as organizations that uphold traditions, rules and standards, such as law offices, regulatory bodies and military. People with the Logistician personality type enjoy taking responsibility for their actions, and take pride in the work they do – when working towards a goal, Logisticians hold back none of their time and energy completing each relevant task with accuracy and patience. We agreed for once! Liuthas Corwell "THE ADVOCATE" (INFJ-T) As members of the Diplomat Role group, Advocates have an inborn sense of idealism and morality, but what sets them apart is that they are not idle dreamers, but people capable of taking concrete steps to realize their goals and make a lasting positive impact. Eyyy two in a row. Remaining 4 to follow... maybe... at some point... in a future post.
  17. Hello! Also EU, and although I personally play at more US playtimes, I keep tabs on the EU RP scene so I can encourage my functional human more normal friends to join in with it. Three points I'll address: - Paying to get onto Balmung - I legitimately think it's worth it. It's less than the cover fee for an IRL nightclub, and honestly, you only get to enjoy that for one night. You get to enjoy access to the Balmung community indefinitely for a one-time fee, and you can bring a full load of 8 characters at once (assuming you pay the subscription plan that allows you to have 8, lol). If you roleplay there even just once a week, I think you're getting your money's worth, even as an EU timezone player. It's basically a roleplay DLC. - Gameplay latency - this is a legit concern, and something that we've been warned will get worse for EU players with the new data centre upgrade that's coming up, and not better (likely the physical location of the data centre is further from Europe). So here's my suggestion: keep your current highly levelled character(s) on your current realm. Do your weeklies, your progression, your content enjoyment there, with your existing friends. And then for roleplay, roll a fresh set of characters on a random server, wait the 3-day cooldown period, and then transfer them to Balmung. It'll take you a little while to get them back up to a serviceable level - but honestly, I find I can access most RP events on a level 15 alt with an airship pass. That only takes an hour or two at most if you skip all the cutscenes and basically know how to play the game. More levels are a boon, but not a hard necessity. - Finding EU roleplayers on Balmung - I'm gonna give the same advice I gave someone else recently: this tumblr, Balmung EU, is a godsend for getting started. They list out the EU-friendly events that take place every week - there's usually at least one a day, sometimes barring reset days. I find once you attend events that suit you both in timezone and RP style, you find other people at those events who you get on with. You add them to your friends' list - and then when you log on even if there's no events happening at that time, there's people on your friends list you can reach out to who are likely to be available. (Events on set days/times are also great for planning your RP around an existing PvE static/FC schedule.) Good luck, whatever you decide to do!
  18. I think my main issue is how difficult the disregard makes it to suspend disbelief. Like with a mind control spell working a certain way it's easy to say to yourself "well I guess it could work that way", since there's no IRL equivalents to compare to. But when an IRL equivalent exists, and is ignored or contradicted, there's that "huh? What? I thought you said this was [thing]? This isn't working like [thing] works at all?" that certainly takes me a hot minute to work past, if I'm invested enough to work past it at all. I don't think researching what it's like to, for example, have a broken leg before you RP your character having a broken leg would be described as "for the sake of didacticism" - so I don't know why applying the same diligence to mental illness or brain injury would be, either. The respect is a separate issue, and broader. Like I say, I think the issue originates in general pop culture and is only expressed through people's choices for their RP storylines. I do think it's important to remember that you don't know anything about the other people behind the screen. As a general litmus, I think if you'd be embarrassed to run your storyline in front of a real person with amnesia, maybe you should go back and refine it before you run it. eta: nixed useless clause
  19. I feel like it bugs me, either as a backstory point or a current plot device, when it's researched badly. I just can't disengage the part of my brain that's saying "it doesn't work like that! Nothing works like that! The plot device you are trying to use doesn't exist! This storyline has no verisimilitude!" for long enough to enjoy it. Unfortunately, this issue encompasses 90% of pop culture representations of amnesia, and as a knock-on effect... a good portion of RPers' amnesia storylines, too. I guess it's kind of difficult when the world doesn't make first-hand stories from people with different types of amnesia very easy to access, but I feel like the amnesia storylines I've touched on in the past in RP have all been the same "they lost their memory and can't remember their name and have to rebuild from the bottom up and reclaim their old life!" storyline that... well, there's only so many variations you can make on it. Especially when similar RL examples are very difficult to come by for inspiration... because that type of amnesia doesn't really... exist. At least, not in significant numbers. I think it kind of rings of disrespect in a way? Like people forget that amnesia is a real thing, that affects real people, and not just a thing that happens in fiction (like truth serums, or mind control spells, or werewolf/vampire transformations). So they treat it like a prop or a trope that you can just make stuff up about because there's no real life equivalent, so you may as well just do whatever, right? Except there is a real life equivalent this time. tl;dr Do your research, make your storyline ring true, and resist the temptation to just copy other works of fiction.
  20. Oooo, does this mean you're thinking about joining us for real as a bona fide Maelstrom freelancer, Kil? :waggles eyebrows: My dude would never! He's far too free-spirited. But maybe the MRD alt I've got parked in the wings with nothing to do... I mean what?
  21. I've participated in storylines and events run by these guys before, and I've been in their Discord for a while - can confirm for good eggs!
  22. Remember Sharlayans forbid by law the teaching of disciplines of war to outsiders. It's easy to think of them as peaceful teachers of knowledge, but they're not - they're isolationists who avoid having a hand in the outcome of a given war, even indirectly (by way of teaching one of its sides a new discipline). They would much rather stand by, watch thousands of people die, then write it all down. So although there were many classes available to foreign students, classes in astromancy were not among them. If RDM is Sharlayan in origin, I strongly doubt lessons in it would be freely available to outsiders, either - especially with renewed hostilities between Eorzea and Garlemald. It'd place it in the same position as AST, where non-Sharlayan characters who want to say they know it need to have a strong justification for how they came into possession of a restricted soul crystal. I kind of hope it's a fresh discipline, like MCH, that's being developed by Eorzeans. But I guess we'll see? I don't really know where I think it's likely to come from...
  23. I took the quiz for my character and it repeatedly placed him in a personality type that doesn't suit him at all, because all of the N/S differentiation questions are based on a modern understanding of media... and he can't read. Of course he isn't going to be interested in storybooks; that doesn't mean he isn't an idealistic person. :I So I'm overriding its decision on the N/S and saying he has the traits I originally described him as having: “THE ARCHITECT” (INTJ-T) It’s lonely at the top, and being one of the rarest and most strategically capable personality types, Architects know this all too well – it is often a challenge for them to find like-minded individuals who are able to keep up with their relentless intellectualism and chess-like manoeuvring. People with the Architect personality type are imaginative yet decisive, ambitious yet private, amazingly curious, but they do not squander their energy. ...btw, he got exactly 49/51 on A/T both times I took the quiz, which made me laugh. I wonder if the 1 point that tipped him over into T was specifically because apparently he's so indecisive about it...
  24. I am a lazy scrub and am still just only doing daily mini cactpots. But in my defence, I do have 10 characters. The other stuff doesn't look all that engaging to me, but maybe I'll try it when Make It Rain rolls around again...
  25. Hi! We have this connections linkshell + Discord for other Rogues that you're welcome to join! We haven't run any plotlines very recently, but I'm definitely looking into what I can do soon, and anyone else is always welcome to bring their own stuff to the table too.
