  1. Stiiiiilll here! Let anyone on the list in the OP know if you want an in-game LS invite, and/or contact me if you want a Discord invite!
  2. B-But my other Disciples of the Hand are only level forty, kupo...
  3. Imagine if Odin had've joined in, lol. (Randomly Far Eastern demigods unite?)
  4. The reason I'm confused is because I distinctly remember them referring to the "island nation" they hail from, and Doma is on the mainland. Furthermore, this was used by multiple people as an argument against the existence of the Doman language (people claiming that because the NIN questgivers are not from Doma, they cannot be used as an example, even though they repeatedly refer to the tongue they speak as "Doman").
  5. I don't believe so. I'm pretty sure it focuses on events that occur on the mainland. Princess Yuki talks about the fall of Doma, and Hingashi is never mentioned as far as I can tell from the journal entries and cutscenes. I did not save the quest text, though. 30-50, not 51-60.
  6. IIRC, the NIN 30-50 quests cover the mechanism of Hingashi's annexation fairly extensively? Or am I mixing up my islands
  7. Moenbryda's skin tone was unattainable in the character creator, too, fwiw?
  8. I second what Kismet says. A linkshell only becomes a "general discussion" linkshell if you let it. FC chat will fall prey to the same trap, if you let it... with the added problem that FC chat is where you'll be discussing game mechanic stuff like use of the company workshop, chest, actions, and so on. That's why I'm in the FC I'm in - it provides, alongside agreeable people and a loose RP backdrop, terms and conditions I can agree to regarding the use of those OOC game mechanic conveniences that are only available to FCs. But I seek the huge majority of my roleplay outside of it. Having an FC house is a boon, but constructing the majority of your social side of things around FC-only chat channels will mean that anyone who would prefer to stick with their old FC is inherently on lesser footing. They'll get to join in IC on events, but they won't be able to share OOC character-building, plot-planning, development-sharing... And it means it has to be all-or-nothing. You're either in the FC or you're not. So if someone starts burning out on the plot, or wanting to diversify, or their character develops in a diffent direction, or even they just want to have an FC room in a different housing district to the one you picked... if the majority of your communication is FC-only, it's not like they can keep in touch and join in with stuff they want to. They either stay or leave. But you can have up to eight linkshells, and a billion discord servers - it's much easier for someone to drop in and out as their character's attitudes and OOC schedule dictate. The thing that will dictate whether they want to drop in, and the extent to which they participate in the thing you want them to (i.e. RP-focussed conversations about Othard resistance matters), is the structure you provide as leader - in terms of events, plotlines, in-character social nights... TL;DR: Free company VS linkshell is inconsequential. The thing that makes the difference between a general social group and an RP-focussed group is strong leadership and clear direction.
  9. Limsa has the hardest stance against slavery in the form of the Dutiful Sisters of the Edelweiss, who usually outright kill slavers if they find them. It's the "finding them" part that usually thwarts them, though - along with "isolating them successfully from their networks because we can't actually fight an entire pirate fleet on our own and the Maelstrom's support for our operation is shaky even though we've been in this city longer than them". Ul'dah seems to look the other way. The basic principle Ul'dah operates on is that if you have enough coin, almost anything is legal. There's nothing in place to stop very rich business-owners from owning or trading slaves. As per others' reply I think indentured work is a norm, both in Ul'dah and elsewhere. Rowena's House of Splendors is operated entirely based on it (she pays off women's debts to third parties, and in exchange, the women become indentured workers for her - the idea being it's a better life for them than being chased by debt collectors, and she gets to profit off their work in the mean time. You can spot these women in Revenant's Toll / Idyllshire because their names all end in -na, as per Rowena's rules). It's unlikely anyone - even actual slaves in Ul'dah - would be branded or in chains because, as mentioned, slavery is illegal and any operation has to have a cover story for if it's discovered. Oh, you think this maid is here as a slave? Oh no, she's just a friend here as a favour! You think these men are working in my mine without pay? No no, I'm sending it home to their families! A brand or chain would give away these excuses in a heartbeat; they want lies that can be covered up with forged paperwork, under-duress consent statements, and bribery of officials. Outside Eorzea, however, it's important to note that these rules may not apply. If you're asking for a character's backstory, you may wish to leave the continent that they originated from as vague as possible - I'm sure these practices could exist somewhere on Hydaelyn, we just don't know where.
  10. I'm already very happy in my existing FC, and I have no plans of moving or leaving any time soon. That said, I have a few characters who would fit right in, in various Othard-centred storylines [1] [2] [3] - so if you, as an FC, ever do a storyline or something that's open to the realm in general, count me interested.
  11. Sounds like our lizards have a lot in common - actually to the extent that I think it would be perfectly acceptable to say that yours had seen mine around before, possibly even knowing his name, if that makes breaking the ice any easier. Aghurlal regularly spectates Lominsan Fight Club on both Mondays and Thursdays, but if you want to send me a tell in-game outside of those times then I'm free most days from about 9pm UK time onwards!
  12. Black magic is both rare and illegal, due to the damage it can do both to the person and to their surroundings (other people, and the fabric of the very world itself). It requires a special artefact (a soul crystal) in order to be safe to the caster. And that still doesn't guarantee that the caster will use it without significantly damaging their environment. So, illegal; so, secret. (White magic is in a similar state - illegal for the general populace to use - with the added conundrum that the soul crystals for it are heavily regulated and guarded by the government of Gridania.) However, "class" spellcasters - conjurers, thaumaturges, and arcanists - are quite respected in their respective societies (Gridania for conjurers, Ul'dah for thaumaturges, Limsa Lominsa for arcanists). Their guilds usually hold positions of authority in their society, and said guilds can influence law enforcement and policy-making. Their magic is generally safe to use, safe to teach, doesn't require any special rare artefacts (just a spell focus), and is an accepted part of life in Eorzea. I hope that explains a little!
  13. That gets me just reading it... :dodgy: LIKE if they'd just been like "oh, sorry, your submission was made too late, our condolences" it would have been at least less irritating, but they still sent me the code! What the hell!! yes I did still try to submit it even though I knew it wouldn't work
  14. [uK player] I didn't get my fat chocobo from the previous summer promo, because although I sent my picture with several working weekdays to spare, they didn't get back to me with a code until three full days after the redemption period ended. :I I wonder if I'll have better luck with this one.
  15. Is the character physiologically mute, psychologically mute, or a combination of the two? I have selective mutism IRL. My case is pretty mild, but something I find is that when I'm in a very stressful situation, I often can't communicate at all besides pushing away things I don't want and reaching for things I do want. Even if someone hands me my phone (that I usually use to communicate when I'm having trouble), my fingers lock up the same way my throat does. It's really frustrating, because these are the kinds of situations that it's most important to be able to communicate complex ideas quickly, and the most I can do is grab at things like a baby... and of course, the frustration itself makes me feel even worse. I think that's something to bear in mind if there's a psychological component to the mutism - sometimes the method of communication doesn't seem to matter so much as the fact that it's live, real-time communication with a real person who's right there. Where stressful, high-tension situations are concerned with psychological forms of mutism, complicated devices might not make communicating any easier. Ofc, if the mutism is purely physical, then none of this applies - but I thought it might be worth sharing my personal experience! Either way, the phrase you may wish to research is "Augmentative and alternative communcation", or AAC. Even the wikipedia page has a bunch of different options, both high-tech and low-tech, as well as examples on usage. Low-tech AAC like picture boards or phrase flipbooks (basically like a physical version of the auto-translation feature) would be super easy to make in Eorzea with little expertise or expense; possibly to fill the gap while the character is waiting for something more complex to be crafted, or saving up money to commission it.
  16. I use my class hotbars for RP - I have them set up with a bunch of useful emotes and flashy abilities for that class, plus the gearsets I regularly RP with in it. I'd be pretty miffed if they took that away.
  17. Aghurlal can be nervous around other xaela at first, but he's had a good while to pick things up, and he speaks Eorzean fluently. He's not very well equipped to become a teacher (wrong temperament), but he offers pointers to friends where he's asked. Feel free to hit me up OOCly in-game or ICly if you see Aghurlal at an event! Speaking of which, I'm going to specifically mention Stellazio Pizzaria as a place you can potentially run into a few other xaela - it's not a xaela event, per se, but there's usually a good number of us on any given night, and two of the regular barstaff are xaela.
  18. The problems I see are basically: - how would an au ra have come to grow up in Limsa? - why would xenophobes choose to live somewhere with lots of other races? Here are some solutions you can pick and choose. I'm kind of leaving things a bit vague, because... we're going to Othard, the ancestral home of the au ra, next expansion. This is going to be a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the lands there, BUT that means basically anything we make up right now could potentially end up contrary to lore when it comes out. But... here's my suggestions, with that disclaimer: - They're in Limsa for the trade connections. Alongside Radz-at-Han (which, unlike Limsa, has a policy against harbouring enemies of the Garlean Empire), it's one of a number of seaside trade hubs that lies along the southern coasts of the Three Great Continents. Rich or well-connected families might still have travelled to Limsa for business (likely para-legally...) even before Doma was razed, and possibly have settled there if they wanted their child to grow up out of the shadow of the Garlean Empire. - They settled not in Limsa, but in Ul'dah. Although still a majority lalafell (not au ra) and potentially hostile to "beastmen", if a very rich au ra family were to have arrived as merchants or foreign dignitaries and not as refugees, they may have been able to make a life there. Yet Ul'dah also attracts refugees, including those miqo'te who have left their tribes behind, and Lady Lilira has proven there's all sorts of trouble a rich heiress can get into in Ul'dah if she slips the notice of her handlers. - They lived not in Eorzea, but in a trade settlement in Othard that played host to au ra alongside other races, such as hyur and beastmen. Kugane looks like a likely bet, but we'll know more about it when Stormblood releases. Your character had recently heard stories about Eorzea, a land of magic where five races live in peace, in (pick any of: newspapers/fishwives' rumours/family friend's fantastical stories/etc), and impulsively decided to travel there upon being disowned. - Their xenophobia is such that while contacting outsiders is acceptable when it's for work, fraternising with them for social reasons is strictly forbidden. As your character would have been a child, she had no reason to be speaking with outsiders, and got into trouble for doing so. - They were forced to live there by hostile circumstances in their old home. Their xenophobia is thusly intensified by their general insecurity i.e. their desire to stick as closely to the things they'd lost as possible, so when their child rebels against their rules, it's the end of the world all over again.
  19. http://balmungrpcalendar.tumblr.com/calendar This link is going to be your very best friend. Something I've found is that once you have a few people on your friends' list, you start to learn where they hang out to do their more casual roleplay - so for example, I'm friends with a group who regularly goes to the Drowning Wench in Limsa. I wouldn't necessarily have thought to look there before I met them, because it's not as packed 24/7 as the more notorious Quicksand, but meeting them gave me cause to - and now sometimes it's me who they find chilling at one of the tables when they head down to RP. That's a relatively obvious one, but there's tonnes of cool locations in the game (not even accounting for ones in player housing), and Balmung's community is larger than I could ever hope to convey. By attending scheduled events, you not only get to attend the event, but you also get the opportunity to meet people IC and OOC to do more long-term hanging out with, in their location of choice.
  20. Smaller migratory waves of au ra did occur before the events of Through the Maelstrom, as evidenced in the backstory of one Sidurgu Orl. I don't think it's impossible for a family of au ra merchants to have migrated to Eorzea and settled in Limsa Lominsa earlier than that, especially as they're more likely to have survived there (Limsa Lominsa accepts the presence of all friendly Spoken, including beastmen) than the Orl tribe were in Ishgard. But it certainly wouldn't have been common - it's not like there would have been a community of other au ra in Limsa for this family to take part in, so much as a community of other miscellaneous races that weren't one of the Five. So it's not the au ra in Limsa that sticks out to me as odd, but the xenophobic au ra in Limsa - why would they have chosen to settle in Eorzea's most multicultural city? Why leave Othard to begin with?
  21. Sell things that go into stacks. Sell them in stacks of 1. Using this as our example competition: So instead of listing 1 stack of 3 at 799 gil apiece, list 3 stacks of 1 at around 2,500 each. Don't list more than 5 stacks of 1 at once, or you risk flooding the market and forcing people to undercut you in order to get their listing viewed. Sometimes certain items just don't sell that well on the MB, and you have to decide if them taking up the space in your retainer's sale limit is worth eventually selling them at the price you want to go at. If not, cut your losses and vendor. (Looking up online what they're used for and where else they're available is a good way to determine this.) Safe go-to's are dyes, glamour prisms, and crafting leve/quest items (either the finished items, especially if HQ, or the materials for them).
  22. First of all... you'll probably still want to transfer onto Balmung. Roleplay on the other realms is very hit-and-miss, and although there are scattered communities on other US data centre worlds, I don't think I've ever seen one based in an EU realm. Therefore, despite being a US server, Balmung is still your best bet for finding other EU roleplayers, because it has the highest concentration of roleplayers in general. You will almost certainly need to pay a transfer fee in order to get characters onto the realm, but you can bring a full load of 8 with 1 transfer fee. Think of it like the roleplay DLC for the game. That now cleared up, this tumblr is great: https://balmung-eu.tumblr.com/ because they post a list every week of EU-friendly RP events listed on the calendar this week. There's usually at least one on most days, sometimes barring reset days. My personal favourites to attend are Matron's Reach open hours on Mondays and EU Fight Club on Thursdays. Attending these can help you build your contacts list of people who will be around at similar times to you!
  23. Your guideline for Earth objects that may be in existence in Eorzea is did this exist by the 18th century? The race naming conventions based in Earth cultures make repeated reference to this time period, and while the technology and cultural development isn't a 1:1 analogy, it's a good frame of reference to go by. So, in order: • Guitar-like instruments have been around for a very long time, and instruments known as "[adjective] guitars" were recorded in the 11th century. They were known simply as "guitar" by the 14th. • The violin was invented in the same time period as the cello (16th century), and we have cellos, so it's safe to assume we have violins (and violas) too. • Harpsichord were the predecessors of the fortepiano (which in turn was the predecessor of the modern piano), and harpsichords exist in XIV (they're a housing item). The invention of the fortepiano was made at the beginning of the 18th century, which is the very tail end of time period XIV draws its inspiration from. If the fortepiano exists, it's probably considered by the people of Eorzea to be a very modern instrument - and things like upright pianos almost certainly haven't been invented yet. • "Edo-era Japan" is the keyword for Doman culture in XIV, so look at when the specific instruments you're thinking of were invented. If it was during (or before) the Edo period, it probably exists. If it was after, it probably doesn't.
