discussion Defence against dark aether
L'ohba Tia replied to Faith Beoulve's topic in Lore Discussion
Light and Dark are not elements, but are some different kind of energy that has yet to be explained. -
The bit about Hingan being indiscernible from Eorzean is only in reference to the Japanese script and whether or not players typing in Japanese are speaking Hingan. Koji confirmed here, alongside Hancock's dialogue, that Hingan is a separate language from Hyuran Common.

There are/were primals in Othard. It's where Garlemald first encountered them. Yugiri didn't know what a primal was until she saw Leviathan, and then confirmed that the Domans had encountered things like him before. So they've at least been as far east as Doma. It's very possible for Xaela to have encountered primals before, even if they weren't called primals.

No, not at all. I think I can manage to get we make spells using forces that don't exist IRL. Just as Dragonball Z has "Ki energy" they gather to shoot blasts. I'm more-so just trying to understand the finer fundamentals of it is all. Most of it makes sens,e you make a fire spell, you use fire aether... Cool. The fire aether is more polarized one way over another or you made the spell that way....... what determined the polarization? That's the only bit here that doesn't have a reason behind it despite everything I've read. I mean again, if it's a "just cuz" thing and there's no base for it... I can make do with that I guess, just doesn't sound like that is the case considering even the fundamentals of making a spell have an element or not makes more sense because there's a cause and effect to it. Fire spell | cause - mage gathering aether and fire aether around to manipulate into the spell, effect - you create a fireball to hurl at something using the elements around and the powers enabled to you to manipulate aether in the first place. Astral/Umbral alignment of aether | cause - ????????????...... effect - it determines to a degree how aether/spells act actively/passively. The question marks are what I'm attempting to fill in here lol. Unless it's just one of those un-explainable concepts that just exist without any base to it. If so, then I guess I can't find the answer, but I feel like given it exists, it would have a concept behind it to better detail/understand what it means. The simple answer is that a mage can manipulate polarities. This is the very foundation of Thaumaturgy. As for what determines polarity in a natural case, outside of magic? It just is. Dry air is just umbral, chilly air is just umbral.

It was just because they needed a ship, and Tataru was privy to some useful info that she could use to blackmail Carvallain into bringing you for free. The difficulty is only because Othard is pretty much the other side of the world and that's a rough journey. Not because there isn't frequent travel between Eorzea and Kugane. Lolorito even has an office in Kugane, so there must be frequent trade.

Interestingly enough, that assertion also establishes the existence of an Eorzean version of French and German, as well., since noble Elezen names use "de" as a preposition denoting "of", and "von" can be found in the form of "Baron Von Quiveron". As I'm so fond of saying, it's very bad world building to not formally establish whether or not your setting has multiple languages, which is par for the course for Square, but the fringe information is useful. The Eorzean version of French has been noted to be the old Elezen tongue.

It's a shame the forum doesn't have a way for me to save or pin posts. This is incredibly useful and the nerd inside me is oddly turned on @.@! But in all seriousness, amazing compilation.. I have a side question in regards to a quote. " So considering the events that happened between Omega and Shinryu being known as a calamity, would this just be another comparative calamity to that of Bahamut's time or did it take it upon itself to use new elements in some way(nidhogg's energies and supposed allag tech?). Or are they just comparing it and not truly claiming it to be a calamity(or else I suppose they would call it the eight something or another calamity?). I also read a bit saying thaumaturges can not only control the astral and umbral polarity in themselves but potentially in other beings. What I'd like to know at this point is, is the power to control one's polarities limited to the knowledge of thaumaturgy or can anyone learn this concept without speaking through their guild? Also, does this mean that just about anyone can draw from either pole no matter what? (again, I still swear I saw mention in the RDM quest and Alisae about them being naturally more aligned and why their healing has been off). Why would Omega and Shinryu's fight be considered a Calamity? They hardly even did any damage. As for the Umbral and Astral, I would think that learning to manipulate the polarities would be something any mage would learn as part of the basics. Thaumaturgy is heavily centered around the two polarities, which tie into their religious philosophies, but there's no reason a conjurer or arcanist would just completely ignore how useful and vital they are to manipulate.

A Guide for First Time Travelers to Kugane
L'ohba Tia replied to Rookie Judge's topic in RP Discussion
I agree. The guide is nice but you are expecting everyone to follow it. The issue then becomes when you are interrupting someone's roleplay to push the 'law' on someone who did not wish to partake in the first place. I know why you made this post and anyone on Tumblr can find it. That's silly. If you're roleplaying in the world, you should expect the average person to abide by the rules of that world. If I encountered someone who was very obviously breaking some sort of law, my character wouldn't act like it was normal. He would at least be confused and note that something was wrong. The guide is for people to understand how things are supposed to go in this place that not many people have had time to get familiar with. There's nothing wrong with giving people information about how things are supposed to work in the world they're playing in. -
The converter is already capable of shifting your internal aether to a specific aspect. I believe the MCH stun ability specifically mentions that it shifts to a lightning aspect? So yeah, your concept is entirely believable and lore friendly.

It's less about what umbral and astral is and more what determines how far into either spectrum people can use them. Otherwise, a person would be able to cast umbral fire or astral fire for example.... But I imagine it's more akin to your alignment between the two, which then has me asking what determines that. But yeah, Sounsyy prolly has it . While certain skills may be astral or umbral aspected, I would imagine that people manipulating aether often make use of both sides. One cannot exist without the other. It's important to note that the skills we have in the game's battle system are by no means the only skills or spells available within the setting. And not all spells may even be astral or umbral aspected to begin. Of course, I'm actually working on a graph that explains the spectrum of aether alignment but I'm missing this detail. As with certain characters also mentioned int he RDM questline or Alisae, it seems like some people can struggle in some areas like healing because their aether is naturally akin to umbral or vice versa. So while it's possible, I still don't quite get the origin or concept of someone's natural mana being aligned, or it's determining factors. Your affinity with certain elements is mostly determined by where you reside, which is why monsters in hot areas spit fire and monsters in cold areas spit ice. It applies to the human races too. So an Ul'dahn-born mage would have more affinity with fire and earth, while Twelveswood-born mages are more attuned to wind, water, and earth. As for Astral and Umbral? Are there any examples of someone being more attuned to one polarity than the other? The NPC you're referring to with difficulty healing wasn't because she was more attuned to one polarity. It was because she'd never actually learned any magic before, but her bloodline gave her a natural advantage toward destructive magicks.

Time Between Heavensward and Stormblood
L'ohba Tia replied to SapphireSkylines's topic in Lore Discussion
I'm pretty sure that this is one of those things that the RP community will just ignore for the sake of convenience. -
it's a final fantasy game summons have always been a thing Of course summons have always been a thing but that instance of it is inconsistent with how it's been handled previously in this game. Which is to say it's not: A. Summoned through tons of prayers and crystals and hangs around draining aether from the land. or B. A little Egi summoned by a summoner. Primal rules have been bending for a while now, and Alphinaud very briefly commented on it. It's becoming easier to summon them. Shinryu was summoned by Ilberd to fuel his own wishes of creating another Calamity, directly conflicting with the wishes of the sacrifices he used who were praying for Rhalgr. Who got what they wanted? Ilberd. And in Stormblood, there are two instances of accidental primal summonings.

Within Eorzea, things that look like electric lights are usually explained as being powered by bomb cores. Garlemald does have electricity which is described as harnessing lightning-aspected aether, and thus anything in Eorzea that might be involved with the Ironworks could likely use electricity.

You're right that most jobs are absolutely accessible. Even WHM and BLM are acceptable with the proper backstories. You just can't openly be one of those. Some jobs do require soul crystals to function, though. The SMN questline tells us that even the original Allagan SMNs required soul crystals for some reason, I'm guessing as a medium for channeling egis. SCHs require one to store their faerie in so that it can retain memories and its personality. BLMs require one to avoid setting their insides on fire. And if I remember right, MCH uses theirs as a medium for the aetheroconverter.

The Immortal Flames are the only company that send out primal parties with any regularity. Ifrit is summoned constantly because of how brainwashed the Amalj'aa are compared to other tribes. They even have a plaque for people who succeeded. I'd also advise everyone in the thread to do the 60-70 SMN questline in regards to this.

He's in the Waking Sands before Stormblood.

Lol. That's essentially what I'm looking for. There is nothing in the rules saying I can't look for irl connections so I would kindly ask that you keep your opinions to yourself. If you don't like my thread, then don't post here and just move on. I wish you a wonderful day. You don't pay my sub.

Is there any lore on the specific Keeper clans?
L'ohba Tia replied to Chiyi's topic in Lore Discussion
Keeper names spread like wildfire simply because names are passed from mother to daughter, and because they have a lot of daughters. So those names you see pop up more often are simply names that have been around for a long time. Because of that, Khloe Aliapoh and Jihli Aliapoh aren't necessarily even closely related. They could be hundreds of years removed from each other. So if you want to use those names, don't feel like you even have to stick to any lore that might be there for them. -
Yes, there are secret tunnels that the resistance, Yda, and Papalymo have been using for over a decade apparently.
-
There's also a place called the Bloodsands! It's the name of the Coliseum in Ul'dah.
-
There's nothing outlandish or unacceptable about that at all. You'll just need some mysteries to solve so you can play it properly!

I always thought bronze lake was more of like a relaxation area. There's hot springs and tables to set drinks on or soak your feet in. Then the lil bar area in that small house I think... It's definitely a medical facility. That's what "sanitorium" means, and why the huge majority of the non-staff NPCs there have something wrong with them - a lingering injury, a mental ailment resultant of combat... ...and why when Godbert shows up without invitation, none of the questgivers seem to know what to do with him, or how to tell him that this isn't a holiday resort. Now that you mention it, kinda makes sense. Now it sounds more like a for of rehabilitation area, just more for calming the nerves and easing the muscles. I was picturing more of a hospital look when I heard a medical facility.... But anywho, without further derailing lol. Even that sounds like it would be nice for medical workers of any field, even mages in the arts of healing magic. Every time I've been it's very few or none there ~.~; I hang around there on L'ohba, but it's mostly to idle because the only people showing up are level 1 ERP alts looking to get their rocks off, or non-RP FCs running a date auction to cash in on desperate people.

It sucks that Quicksand is the only hub, but at least it's appropriate there. Bronze Lake is a hospital, and the THM guild is a church. They're not really hangout spots.

Can't install FFXIV because of no CD-Rom

There's another whole continent to the west, the New World, where the Mamool Ja are from. So you can't just go that way. By the looks of things, Othard should be almost on the opposite end of the globe. Maybe Gosetsu's samurai training just made him that badass that he made the journey in a fishing boat?
