  1. The PSP version uses updated sprites instead of the DS 3d models, has all of the content from the various versions (minus Augments from the DS one), and has The After Years bundled in. Essentially you're getting two, full length games for the price of one. In my opinion it's the superior version.
  2. I'm going with the power of love and friendship. Though the Macross cross over is interesting. In all seriousness though... think about how music makes you feel. Everyone has some songs that seem to bring out latent energy in them, or that calm them down, and many other emotions too. A good bard could likely pick and choose songs that the majority of people would respond to in a wanted way. In turn, the people hearing those songs would be inspired/get a second wind/etc.
  3. Is swearing not allowed in the other chat or something? I didn't ask about the presence of a skype chat because I was suspicious about any goings on or anything, though, to be clear. I just had no clue there was a community chat. Not sure how comfortable I am giving out my real name, though, as that's what my Skype account uses. I'll think about it. Just so you know, you can modify your display name for Skype!
  4. When creating your character, how do you balance between being too boring and too snowflake? A lot of folks try to make a character have many life defining events... but that's not really necessary at all. People in the real world are very often changed by a singular event. A character doesn't need a life time of traumatic (or amazing) events to build up why they act the way they do. Watching a family member die is trauma enough to completely change a character; the whole family and every friend the character has growing up doesn't need to meet some grizzly end to have the same effect. To that end, I try to make a character's life believable; an event or two that shapes the character's outlook on life; then filled with details that would make sense because of those events (or cause them). I feel this makes a character that's more realistic, and in the end, more fun for me to play. When role-playing with others, what character traits, personalities or actions have you found to be interesting and enjoyable to RP with and/or what have you seen just not work or appear too boring to engage your character? I've been role playing for a long time; and in that time I've seen just about every character trait you can imagine work amazingly and fail spectacularly. Anything can be interesting and enjoyable if they're played well. I've even seen completely lore-breaking traits (I'm really a DRAGON!) be played well enough that it's interesting for the parties involved. What really ruins it is when someone doesn't stick with their traits. For example; the "tormented by a horrible past" character that instantly overcomes their past except when it serves their scripted events. You made your character have the past you did to frame how they're supposed to act... so make them act that way! If you want them to change, that's great; but change takes a long time, and thus you should work towards it slowly. I've seen this happen a lot with people who have characters that are less likely to be "likable." They try out their concept once or twice, notice people don't want to play nice with them, and then modify themselves to "fit the crowd." Where do you find the line and when do you think it can be easily crossed while still being within the lore? Lore is a hard subject. For me, I prefer when something has some sort of existence in the world before you use if. If there's some kind of precedent for half-Miqo'te half-vampires... then awesome. Go for it. Even if it's something of a stretch to make it make sense. A great example is the folks playing Ishgardians. Obviously there's not a ton of lore... but there's enough there that yeah, it makes complete sense for you to play as one. Especially if you try to work within the bounds of what is known so you don't have to retcon yourself later. When you start getting in the realm of stuff that makes absolutely no sense with anything seen in the lore... well then you've gone too far (for me). What kind of advice would you give given your past experience? Have other people take a look at your character concept before you decide to play it; especially if you're unsure of lore. When you spend a lot of time working on something, you become attached to it, and maybe you don't realize some flaws that are present. Have someone look over what you've come up with. They can give you fresh insight and help you develop what you have into something you'll really enjoy. It will help you avoid being too over the top, as well as being way too mundane. Even I do it after having been role playing for a solid 15 years now. It never hurts to have another set of eyes.
  5. I agree with your ideas; but also want to add that it's somewhat dependent on how recent of an event you're speaking about. Like Eva stated; AD is implied when we use dates up until we get into less specific or very ancient dates. For example, we say "In the year 100 AD" for events where we don't have specific information; but we say "July 19th, 2013" when we do. I think the Eorzean system would follow the same logic. It's 19.5A.1554 (or however you choose to write it) until you talk about a date that actually occurred in a different Era. Edit @Projektai: Why not use that in a character concept
  6. Also, if you are faint of heart, for the love of the twelve never use the "furry" custom pack. It will lead you down a road you really don't want to go down. And if you do use it never, ever, ever Google terms you don't understand.
  7. I have nothing of value to add to this conversation, other than I'd love to see someone RP a Nuhn (or former) with this as part of their background. "So, what happened when you finally won, and became Nuhn?" "I ate his children. All of them." "No seriously..." *dead serious stare*
  8. A pleasure to meet you, Speaker for the Dead. Come to write a fourth chapter?
  9. If they took, they're in My Documents --> My Games --> FFXIV Beta --> Screenshots However, the PrtScr button doesn't seem to work in cutscenes, dialogues, or during character creation. You can use Crl+PrtScr, then paste it into an MS Paint and save them that way, use a third party program, or some other shortcuts I can't think of off the top of my head.
  10. From most of the posts on the linkshell tab, it is very difficult to tell that. For instance Crystalline(?sp?) looks like a linkshell but talks like a free company... conversely misericorde talks like a free company, looks like a linkshell but IS a free company! argh! the confusion! I think the biggest issue is that the website hasn't been updated to work the way 2.0 does. As stated before; Linkshells are now chat channels. There used to be no Free Companies at all; so your Linkshell was essentially your guild. Now you can have up to 8(9?) Linkshells active at a time, but only one Free Company. Groups like Crystalline are likely going to be Free Companies, where as groups like... Wanderer's Shadow (a secret society) are more likely going to be a Linkshell. Best thing would be to get the mods to update the site so Linkshells and Free Companies are separated! In addition, changing the Linkshell part of the user profile to Free Company would be good as well.
  11. I'm not really looking for a true mentor; but I could use someone(s) to be a sounding board. I work a lot better when I have someone who is actively giving me constructive criticism and offering inputs of their own. They'd be helping with everything from character race, look, basic concept, and even wordplay when I finally get everything set in stone. I'd prefer someone whose willing to tell me when something is boring, lame, or overly cliche; while giving ideas on how to improve. I'd also be willing to do the same for someone else, if that's something you feel you'd like. Hit me up via PM if you're interested.
  12. Just to chime in... Lalafell don't have traditional surnames. This is a quote directly from the naming conventions: The way that reads is each Lalafell either comes up with their own, or it's given to them somehow... but it's not a family name at all.
  13. Today is the birthday of what could be, quite possibly, the most important video game system ever to exist; the Nintendo Entertainment System! Hell, without it, we might not have FFXIV today! So, happy NES day! Here's a great article about how the NES turned the video game world upside: Happy Birthday, NES! I remember getting mine when I was four, and it started a love of video games that has lasted for 22 years, and is still going strong. The Legend of Zelda and Final Fantasy were amazing, and still are some of the greatest games ever made. Hours and hours and hours of entertainment there-- let alone Castlevania, Megaman, and more. What are some of your fondest NES memories?
  14. Well, everyone else is doing it, why not.
  15. Ctrl+Print Screen, then pasting into a paint file works.
  16. The Printscreen button only works when you're actually on a character, standing around. It doesn't seem to work during cutscenes, character creation, and other similar instances.

Ha! Oh no, never. I wouldn't do that to people. I'm talking quick, easy macros just to (basically) be alerts. An example I used earlier being, basically, "I need heals". I'd be careful with that one. I play a healer often, and I'm not going to lie... but people going "I need heals!" ticks me off. I know you need heals, I do, I promise; all I do is stare a little health bars! If you haven't gotten healed, there's a reason for it. Adds and Threat warnings are useful though, as are group affecting cool down usage warnings.
  18. I feel yah. I haven't RP'd at all either. My 'legacy' character got to uh... level 24 CNJ and 11 THM. Not much of a preexisting character at all But I'll be on Balmung because I don't entirely want to start over. From the people I've met on here (and in Skype!) you can't go wrong with either server... or both! Good luck!
  19. Welcome! There's no application for Balmung. You simply make your character there like any other. You're not alone... many people here do not have legacy characters (or if they do, haven't RP'd them... like myself!) that will be playing on Balmung. If you'd like more of a 'fresh' start when the game releases, Gilgamesh is the non-legacy server where other like minded folks are heading for RP.

Macros, my friend; macros. Just don't abuse them, or they'll tick people off. Generally I don't try to RP during battles that require precision. Like you said, there's just not enough time. If it's something that's easy, and I don't have to play perfectly to survive... well then you can miss a GCD here and there.
  21. The bonus points are for that particular class. Each class (and job) has it's own set to allocate.
  22. I'd also say use a new character, and friends if you can. What would be fun and hilarious is if you took the time to TRULY design a new character, therefore spending like an hour or two in the character creator. Start designing it, then do a fast forward on it with some commentary. Might be enjoyable for people to see how much you can really do for customization without making it last forever.
  23. I rolled through the first three dungeons today with the duty finder, as a Lalafell CNJ. Character size really didn't matter at all; though I tend to play a little zoomed out more than some might when doing dungeons.
  24. Game mechanics wise, I'd start by working up what is likely to be the two sub-classes for SUM and SCH, CNJ and THM. That way you'll be able to take Arcanist right to 30 and go SUM/SCH as soon as it's available. Arcanist Guild is in Limsa Lominsa, so I'd avoid doing those quests. Character wise, I'd perhaps have him be studying magic, but with a focus on the particularly odd magic the Beastmen use. That's where the summoning ability seems to stem from, so perhaps have your character notice it in their travels and start trying to unravel the mysteries of it all. When it gets close to release, have him start making breakthroughs in his studies that lead to him being able to bring forth Carbuncle. Unfortunately, I haven't seen any lore about just how one BECOMES an Arcanist, so... maybe someone else can help you with that part.
  25. Haha, as a scientist in real life, "just magic" infuriates me to no end! It's probably why I think so much about the mechanics behind magic in fantasy universes. Perhaps a fun way to RP would be to take notes while doing some of the magic-based quests; especially for the CNJ and THM guild specific ones. That way you can RP actively researching it and give us all some answers!
