I might be leveling a second job because DPS queues suck and there's not a whole lot for me to do after weeklies/dailies. I also might be totally in love with this mask. I also also might have finally figured out what was wrong with my gpose camera positioning. Okay, but seriously I love this mask. This top is so clippy though and I'm not 100% sold on it. Unfortunately, not many alternatives without spending money on the Mogstation.

mateus Wannabe Hero Hingan Looking for Connections!
Mermaid replied to TNSLowell's topic in Chronicled Connections
Oh no. Cheerful, would be heroes are some of the best characters. Buuut I'm on Balmung and have a sporadic schedule that discourages in game RP. Best of luck finding connections. -
I feel like this topic has pretty much been covered but as people have said most ideas out there have already been used. Tropes on their own aren't a bad thing. Heck, most tropes became tropes because they were ideas people liked so much or worked so well that people overused them. I feel like no matter what any character is going to fall into a few tropes. I personally like to offset this by breaking one or two. A good example would be you made an adventurer out to do good? Break the "dead parents" trope.

There is RP on Jenova. A friend of mine was complaining about RPers in the Quicksand a couple hours before the servers went down. There is significantly less of it there though so you have to know were to look. Try making a party finder listing saying you're looking for RP linkshells and FCs. I do know of a couple RP FCs and you can find their Lodestone pages over here: https://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/freecompany/9229001536388993432/ https://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/freecompany/9229001536389030067/ If you're interested, try getting in touch with their officers and asking how to join. If you're not interested in a small RP community or you're like me and want to separate the character you play around with from the character you RP as then Mateus is a good place to be.

As someone who deals with a combination of anxiety and hating my own writing...that just blows my mind. How are you so timid that you can't RP in public but you're still ballsy enough to berate someone? Someone teach me this secret.

For those who compose their posts out of game while RPing
Mermaid replied to Kuzhuk's topic in RP Discussion
Between counting characters and the spell checker I'd say this is better than what I use for out of game stuff too. :surprise: -
Roleplay speed in a scene with multuple players(more than 4)
Mermaid replied to Kallera's topic in RP Discussion
The few times I've done RP with large groups of people? Everyone got a turn. That was it. We all got our first posts out and then continued going in that order. This was only broken if people split into groups. When that happened it was handled one of two ways. Method one was the smaller groups were expected to go at a decent pace so they could be brought back together without time skips or stuff being role played privately. Method two was some sort of action would happen that everyone would get dragged into regardless of how far they'd gone. It really just comes down to having a lot of patience. I got my start derping around in chat rooms like everyone else but it was forum/PM/IM RP that really got me hooked and it's easily my preferred style. I've never had a problem with an RP going slow or taking awhile so long as the other people involved posted regularly and didn't drop out. So really my advice is slow down, you don't have to have a strict post order but try to give everyone a turn, and be prepared for a looong campaign. -
Oh, I'm with you here. I wouldn't say "no OOC discussion" is a red flag that might keep me from role playing with someone but it is a sign that it may not go further than a simple conversation and the characters never interacting again. I play a character that needs some pushes here and there to make her interact with people. Unless the character she's interacting with is particularly outgoing and eager to make friends then it's unlikely to develop naturally. Preplanning a reason for interaction, even a simple one, always works best for me. It doesn't have to be a railroad and things can still happen naturally in between. I also like to know what's on the other person's mind and what they might want when/if more does happen. I'm okay with all kinds of stuff (like injuries and romance) but I like being asked first so I can discuss any concerns I might have. We role play for enjoyment and I think we owe it to each other to at least try to make sure the other side is happy and comfortable with how a scene is going. That's something you need OOC for.

This talk of Garleans and "inventing shit" reminded me of one. Two words that will always make me raise a brow and check how badly you might be stepping on the canon are noble and nobility. It's always a coin flip whether they're fine or whether they're snowflakey. For every one doing it right there's another who hasn't done their research or is trying to insert themselves into some part of the lore they shouldn't. For every one that has done extensive research or writes it so damn well that their tiny mistakes don't matter there's two going "Tee hee! I'm a princess!". Then to add insult to injury you can tell those 'princesses' know they're breaking canon because they always come from some island or place that's never been mentioned. Pretty much every girl ever has wanted to be a princess at some point in her life but maybe you should find a setting/system/etc that supports it? Maybe it's just one of my buttons because I was once guilty of making a noble character without researching the culture first. I was still new to the setting, the information wasn't on the sites I was using as resources, and I assumed a less common ethnic group would have a society similar to the more common one. It really opened my eyes to the importance of researching lore.

You wouldn't have had to give up your apartment. You can have an apartment, a house, and private chambers at a FC all at the same time This is what I was hoping for on Jenova, where I play with my friends, and we had the same problem. It's easily smaller than Mateus with all the RPers going there now. I was like 400 in queue or something though so who knows how fast those larges actually went.

A lot of their solutions to things amount to applying band aids to leaks until too much water has flooded out and they have to actually fix it. I think this particular band aid might appease smaller servers, who by then will probably have seen some houses being sold by players or reclaimed, but Balmung and other high pop servers are just going to see another blood bath. If their servers are as bad as they seem to be they're going to run out of band aids for the housing problem soon.

discussion CLEARLY MARKED STORY SPOILERS 4.1
Mermaid replied to Warren Castille's topic in Lore Discussion
As a rule, I assume every likable ruffian who wants to help us is a fucking traitor we'll end up killing. Batman this shit: Have a plan to kill everyone around you! Whoa, put the kryptonite down. The writers let us have nice things sometimes. -
Well, apparently we're getting more wards in 4.2. Not quite a fix to the overall problem but it's something, I guess? http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/threads/348376-In-Regard-to-Housing-in-Patch-4.1

discussion CLEARLY MARKED STORY SPOILERS 4.1
Mermaid replied to Warren Castille's topic in Lore Discussion
I haven't been able to do it all yet because my friends want to get all the content unlocked first. -
Despite everything that's happened it's still only been 5 years since the Calamity, 25 years since Garlemald took over Doma, etc, etc. There's a quote from Micheal-Christopher Koji Fox somewhere about the game being stuck in a "Simpson's time bubble". So basically we've freed Ishgard from it's war with the dragons, liberated Ala Mhigo and Doma, killed a bunch of primals, and it's still the same year.

I had to fight for an upgrade to my FC's estate on my main (which luckily isn't on Balmung). All the larges were gone by the time I got through the queue. Managed to snag the first decently placed medium I saw. An upgrade's an upgrade and we didn't need that much room anyways.

Balmung used to be the server to join for role play but it's currently completely locked to new characters. Mateus is now basically the new Balmung. If you're looking for a server with an RP hot spot where you can just walk up and RP with people that's the server to join. Brynhildr and Jenova also have small communities that seem a little more active lately. Both servers are currently preferred worlds which means starting a character on them will get you an exp boost until you hit level 60. I would only recommend going to them if you're the kind of player who really wants to hit end game fast and doesn't mind that the RP scene there will be small.

Personally having that kind of mentality is part of what lead me to create this thread. I'm the kind of person who will role play with pretty much anyone willing to put in the effort of setting it up with me. I may be wary of some things but ultimately I end up giving everyone a chance. Recently, I had one of those very rare times where I thought "Huh, maybe I should stay away." and that made me wonder about reasons other people might think that.

This is one of those things I take with a grain of salt. There is a surprising number of people in hobbies like gaming, role playing, and art who are there because they have difficulty being functional. I'm not talking about the people who do things like look for romantic role play because they can't get a girlfriend/boyfriend. I'm talking about the people who get into it because they have mental or physical illnesses and it's something they can actually do and enjoy. It often comes down to being able to judge which ones are dependent on it and which ones do it for enjoyment.

Well this has certainly been something to read while attempting to raid. R.I.P. static. I didn't expect to come back to 4 pages of this. I was hopeful that it'd get to 2. I'm really glad this isn't such a sensitive topic that it can't be discussed.

Yes, I'm very worried about that myself. :dazed: I guess there is one experience I can share without even needing to generalize it. It happened so long ago I'm no longer in touch with the person. A friend started playing a tabletop RPG adventure path I had played a bit of. They would tell me their experiences and show me art they drew of their character. As soon I started talking about my experiences with the adventure path, however, they would suddenly seem to lose interest in the conversation. Are we not having a discussion? Was I just supposed to say your art was nice? It made me feel like they might be the kind of person to make the game all about them.

I feel like this must have been discussed here before but I wasn't able to find an existing thread. Sorry if I've unwittingly created a thread on a commonly discussed topic! What are some red flags for you when it comes to role play you're involved in or people you're role playing with? Things that make you think things like "maybe I shouldn't RP with this person" or "maybe this scene isn't for me". How do you deal with it? I feel like I should be offering my own opinions and experiences to start this thread off but, as with most topics like this, some experiences are as recent as the past month or two and I worry about people involved finding these forums.

That is brilliant and it makes me want to find cool places for the bells in my other character's residence. :surprise:

I hid a Crystal Bell in a wardrobe so I could change my hairstyle when it clips. Unfortunately that means Jandelaine sticks his head through the door like it's The Shining. "Heeere's Jande!"

Woo! Look where I got! Now maybe I'll have more free time? Oh wait, gearing up is slow because being a DPS is a pain.
