balmung An Old Guard's Return to the Fray
Mermaid replied to Kylin's topic in Chronicled Connections
Whoa, okay. I'm really grateful for all the advice, especially for Ryuji making a few points that just sort of made the light-bulb turn on, but please don't derail this thread. My comment was meant to empathize with OP's struggle to find stable partners not steal his (or her?) thread. Again, I'm really grateful and anyone with further comments is free to message me directly but I feel terrible coming back and seeing half this thread's posts seem to be directed at me. -
ADHD and anxiety? I know how that feels. They're both reasons that make me freak out when it comes to RPing in game. "This person can see me moving. It's like they're staring at me waiting for me to type! Aaa!" "I type so slow. What if i can't focus well enough on top of that?!" You get the idea. Since Liadan pointed out the World Visit I feel like maybe I should mention that Adamantoise will be on the Aether data center after the redistribution. The largest population of RPers are on Balmung and Mateus which will be on the Crystal data center. Aether does have smaller RP communities on Gilgamesh and Jenova that you'll be able to interact with after they implement the World Visit system. It might be a little hard to find RP until then.

balmung An Old Guard's Return to the Fray
Mermaid replied to Kylin's topic in Chronicled Connections
Big mood in regards to the last ditch effort. I've been poking around for a year and have yet to be able to find anyone consistent. Feel like I might be due for a last ditch effort myself since it seems like I can't get anything to work. I'm extremely shaky with in game RP (I hate the "walk-up" RP everyone loves where it's literally just "run into someone at a bar and start talking") and I'm not sure how well I could make times match. You're free to hit me up if you manage to catch me though and best of luck finding RP. -
They said recently that the server changes aren't happening in 4.5 (January 8th) and won't be happening until, I believe, 4.55. I believe March was thrown out there for when to expect it but I don't have a source for that on hand. Pretty sure it was all in the recent Live Letter/Letter from the Producer. So, uh, hopefully OP is fine with taking a few months to level before he/she gets to use the World Visit.

mateus RP/XIV Veteran Seeking Connections for Email/Discord RP
Mermaid replied to Nessiah's topic in Chronicled Connections
I'm always up for Discord RP. There should be links with info in my signature though I'm sure some of it could do with an update.Fair warning that raiding, both learning fights and the drama the inevitably happens, has left me a little brain dead recently. I'm also pretty new to setting up plots and the like due in part to a lot of people flaking out before I got anywhere. Everybody wants to do quick in-game stuff in the MMO the setting is from instead of Discord. Who could've guessed? Lol -
Derp. That last line was meant to be PVP not raid. Also Middy isn't that big try Cactuar or Faerie.
-
That's going to be the problem. Balmung has everything which means that relative to it's size it's raid scene is small but still has a good presence in the raid scene overall. Aether's raid scene won't be hurt by this but all the Crystal raiders are being cut off from the larger portion. There's numbers floating around somewhere with the distribution of o8s clears across the new data centers and, from what I remember, Crystal has only half of what the other two do. I've also heard this is cutting Aether's PVP scene in half. Apparently half the PVPers were on Balmung and the other half was on Gilg (with a chunk moving to Cactuar?). Basically, the server changes are great for people who want to RP and do content casually and bad for everyone else.

brynhildr [Brynhildr] Any RP at all?
Mermaid replied to rayofsunshine's topic in Chronicled Connections
There's small RP communities on every server. The problem is finding them. I occasionally see the name Brynhildr pop up here but it's very infrequent. There's bound to be some people over there but who knows what groups are active, ya know? The Free Company and Linkshell listings here have gone through some changes lately. The stuff at the top labeled "Free Companies" and "Linkshells" where fairly recently implemented/changed. Before they were what you see under the "Clubs" tab. Searching over there there's one Free Company and one Linkshell listed for Brynhildr. Seems to be the same people in both and unfortunately it doesn't seem like they've been on the site in months. I'd still try to get in touch with the people listed to see if any of them are still active or if they know any active Linkshells or Free Companies over there. Best of luck! -
Okay, the pictures getting replaced with random images is kind of hilarious. But hey the pictures broke so let's make this thread cool again! The Halloween event area is pretty great for screenshots. I'm pretty sure the instance version prevents you from using skills but thanks to this years event...

The Vent Tent - Poor PuGs and Other Terrible Tales
Mermaid replied to Gegenji's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Honestly? That's probably one of the most valid "difference in playstyle" reasons I've heard. Back when I was doing God Kefka with my static we almost always put markers on the tanks so it'd be more noticeable who to avoid for Ultimate Embrace. First time someone gets cleaved we're sticking the markers on them. The warrior was usually one of the taller races and had like blue/green/turquoise glamours against the yellow or red stage. The paladin, on the other hand, was always a female xeala. I have a friend I've helped clear EX Primals and her fall back strategy when she doesn't know what to do is to follow me. Tsukuyomi EX, for example, my right/left callouts for Dark Blade and Bright Blade didn't help her. She needed east/west for whatever reason but I had the mental association of bright = right. I tried to translate right/left into east/west for her but I just couldn't do it fast enough. Her solution? Put a marker on my head so she knew where I went without having to look for my character. If someone were to come into a party I made to help her and/or her friends farm/clear and someone insisted on removing that marker that she needed? I'm sorry but I would've kicked them. If we'd joined someone else's party and we couldn't come to an agreement? We would've left. I do believe she learned it herself eventually but for her first ten clears at least she just needed that marker. Buuut I wonder if your case wasn't just some weird situation where it was pointless? -

Depending on the reason, chat logs, etc. you can report for things like that and action miiight be taken. The problem with reporting for being booted from a group is the GMs will accept "difference in playstyle" as a valid reason to dismiss someone. For example, you're in POTD opening all the silver chests because your aetherpool is low but the other 3 people aren't and just want to speedrun? They have a reason, backed by the GMs, to kick you and you're just sol. -

He has a towel, Nebbs! I don't even know where it came from! So apparently the new Bridesmoogle minion isn't some anniversary exclusive like I assumed it was. You just get both minions for attending a Gold or Platinum wedding. No waiting a year for an anniversary.

Expected to go hard on raid this tier and that's fallen through so might as well bump this. Think I might have lost track of a few people I added on Discord in the hectic past month I've had so feel free to poke me again if I have.
-
Well this little guy's definitely a contender for "Cutest Minion Animation". Friendly reminder that there's only 2 days left to buy this little cutie. Also gpose has some awesome new features.

Canonically we got a line from Nanamo in 4.something (2?) confirming it's still only been 5 years. From what I hear RPers tend to view passage of time similarly to real time. So if they've been consistently RPing for a year they tend to view it as their character going through a year's worth of events. I don't know if they typically write it as a year or so later than the canon one we have or if they just age their character and refer to events as happening a year ago.

The Vent Tent - Poor PuGs and Other Terrible Tales
Mermaid replied to Gegenji's topic in FFXIV Discussion
O9S? I raid with a static on my main so I've only popped into a couple clear parties on my alt and I think it's always been bards. This was in a run of normal at like stupid o'clock in the morning when I was brain fried, about to pass out, and forgot I was even in queue. I don't blame anyone for not knowing which classes need specific amounts of time. I've heard MCH needs to get their ammo back but off the top of my head I couldn't tell you how long since I've very rarely run with them. The standing around for ages though on top of the inability to recognize mechanics after wiping to them multiple times however... That kind of got to me when I was already worn out from raiding trying to get my gear up to speed. -
The Vent Tent - Poor PuGs and Other Terrible Tales
Mermaid replied to Gegenji's topic in FFXIV Discussion
What kind of backwards raid tier is Alphascape Normal? I can spend ages playing Whack-A-Mole in 12. You know, keep both tanks alive during the last phase, keep ressing the other healer, ressing the Bards when I can because they have Refresh and there's no Red Mage, finally running completely out of mana and dying but having the other healer up to res me, FINALLY getting the LB3 to pick everyone up... At least it felt nice when one person asked which healer to commend for that, the other healer said me within seconds, and I walked out with 6/7 commendations and the piece I needed. Meanwhile, over in 9, there's seemingly more wipe mechanics. So you do god knows how many pulls healing a tank that doesn't mitigate tank busters, doesn't understand that the machinist is asking for a countdown for their ammo not for everyone to just stand around waiting, and doesn't move the boss for the wind phase before you finally get past the Dark Crystal and get an LB3 off to raise the 1/2 - 2/3rds of the group that died because the boss was tanked in the tornado again. GREAT GOOGLY MOOGLY IT'S ALL GONE TO SHIT! Seriously though, this feels backwards. -
Honestly I never thought being in an FC would be a good fit for me or my character. I can't commit to the sort of activity an FC would expect from me. I play D&D a couple days out of the week and when raids drop I tend to not only do them with a static but help friends do them. Outside of the 'me' problems 9/10 FCs don't look like a fit for my character. They'll all be some inn/tavern/restaurant that's looking for staff or some kind of business that's a front for some sort of underground dealings. A mercenary company I could maybe see but even that feels like I'm tying my character to something I may not end up liking. I'd love to see an FC with a general theme and their housing is just the tavern/inn in the area that the members typically stay at. As it is I'm in a friend's FC where I have privileges to pop buffs for raiding and I don't really see that as what's hindering my RP. It's my times/availability that kills it. I do see the community as a whole moving towards FCs and linkshells for RP so I understand the appeal. Have you tried linkshells for a source of people since FCs seem to be a problem?
-
Plot-bendy stuff should absolutely be kept to private groups. That's the place to do it. You implied RPing with various people until you found people you trusted and only telling them after how lore bending your character is. If you want to sit in a linkshell or FC and RP a bunch of characters from Vana'diel then to hell with what people think. You're not bothering them with your private RP. When you take a lore bending character and try to interact with the general populace that's when you risk having a problem. Except they shouldn't have to learn to live with it and some won't. One of the two questions asked in this thread is how likely RPers are to allow, what is in my opinion, the most reasonable crossover lore we've seen and so far the majority are saying they wouldn't. People should not have to accept your nightkin character, your sentient, flying, mechanical horse, or your god killing, friend to the leader of every city, Warrior of Light character just because the game has written an explanation for them. People have a right to walk away from a concept or canon they disagree with just as much as people have a right RP whatever they want.
-
Please for the love of Hydaelyn don't do this. Do not go build connections and so on only to suddenly spring something on them that they might not be okay with. That is not the best way to go about it that's a way to potentially upset people. If you want to do one shot, walk up RP with people in the Quicksand and gauge how open they'd be to something like that before making it long term that's one thing. You really do need tell people about that part of your character before making it long term though. People deserve a chance to back out of something they don't agree with before your character has an impact on their development. Also if we're going to use the "sentient planeswalking horse machines" as a canon example of interdimensional visitors then I guess the bunny in the astronaut suit, the flying superhero cat, and the poodle with the face of a salaryman are all canon too. I'm getting snarky and off topic though so I'll leave it at that. To get back to the actual topic, Ryuji pretty much said everything I could/would say on the matter. About the only thing I'll add is that if you really want to do it there probably are people out there who'll RP with you. This isn't the first time this exact topic has come up. I've seen much less sensical things in game, like vampires (not nightkin or whatever) and half dragons, and they apparently find enough RP partners to continue RPing these characters. It's all down to how willing you are to hunt for people open to your idea.

Welcome to the game and the forums! o/ Sounsyy has a bunch of lore compilations over in Lore Discussion. People here are also willing to help work out lore inconsistencies in your backstory too. Don't be afraid to ask for help here.

I can't really see any logical or lore roadblocks to such a thing. There's a lalafell NPC in the main story quests who was adopted by a hyur and given a hyur name. If you just want to avoid the tribal stuff there's no reason you can't just be a miqo'te who's family gave up that life several generations ago. Some things like naming conventions would likely remain in that case though. Worst case scenario is some grumpy or overly strict RPer writes you off as someone trying to have their cake and eat it too. I'm sure I could walk into the Quicksand right now though and find something far more outlandish than that.

1. The community in general tends to be pretty friendly. Once you pick a server shout in the first main city or ask someone with a crown next to their name for an invite to the Novice Network. It's a channel specifically for newbies to ask experienced players questions. (Having to get invited to it sucks but it'd be flooded with gold farming bot if that system wasn't in place.) 2. Any of the servers on the European data center should suit your time but since you're here I'm assuming you also want RP. Omega is the unofficial European data center but... 3. Mateus is the biggest open RP server. I can't speak for how big Omega is and how prone it is to walk up RP. Hopefully someone over there can come in and sell you on it's merits. It would also have better ping for you. Mateus very likely has the most lively walk up scene at the moment and it does have EU players. I can't say if it's more active than Omega would be during your times though and once again the ping might be an issue if you don't use a VPN.

I'm finding myself in the same boat with struggling to find long term partners and people willing to leave the tavern. I don't have any characters over on Omega but I tend to stick to Discord anyways. Raiding and D&D tend to keep me from sitting around in game for hours. I'm still sorta new to setting up plots and the like but if you're okay with Discord I'd be game to RP sometime. I can't send or receive friend requests until later tonight but there's links with my info in my signature somewhere.
