  1. Is it generally safe to assume that most real world animals exist in some form in Eorzea? To get a little more specific, I had a friend ask if turkeys existed in Eorzea. Culinarian recipes ask for chicken and dodo (even though they're very different dodos). Text in an AST quest I did the other day mentioned goose and pheasant. We have sparrows, owls, bluebirds, and ducks as minions. I could find zero evidence of turkeys so dodo was assumed to be a good replacement. With so many mentions of other real world birds, however, I see absolutely no reason why someone couldn't safely assume there's also turkeys out there somewhere.
  2. Bumping to say I have more free time these days. Also, my intro post is probably in need of an update but is still mostly accurate.
  3. I'm probably not someone who should be commenting on this but what the heck. I'm of the opinion that having kids means you should retire a character more often than not. The special cases are things like giving up the kid (they can be taken in by family members and seen often but are still given up), one parent being so wealthy they can hire nursemaids and caretakers and such, and of course one parent being an NPC that stays with the kid. It has just never been realistic to me to see excuses like a kid being with a family member almost every day or a person of modest income being able to pay someone full time to take care of their kid. But it's entirely possible this opinion is just too heavily rooted in my modern day expectations and is more feasible than I realize.
  4. Update 4/9/18 Finding my schedule a bit more open due to raid stress winding down. Currently in the process of updating this thread.
  5. As Valance said already, they are a real world occurrence. That aside, do they actually glow? I've never actually seen them in a dark area. When I messed around with them in character creation, I assumed the "glow effect" was actually just a lack of shading. A small area of flat color, particularly a bright one, put on top of something with proper shading and highlighting will look like a glow or highlight. It's likely because of that fact that they don't all look like they're glowing. Yugiri's, for example, do not glow. Lastly, it's probably safe to assume that the aesthetician changing them is not canon.
  6. Hmm, this thread has a lot of good advice and I'm not sure I can give any that's better. I can tell you my experiences and what I've learned. I can think of two noteworthy examples where I made comedic characters. Both were in tabletop RPGs but I consider one a failure and the other a success. The first one was the failure. I believe it was the second or third character I'd ever created when I was first learning how to play Pathfinder. Not only did I not have a lot of experience with these games, as previous attempts had been one shots or short lived, but I knew nothing about the setting. My DM said we're playing this adventure path, my friends brought forth their ideas, and I, not really knowing how to research the game, just made something up. For some reason I thought it would be funny to play a catfolk druid with a big cat animal companion. Then I got it into my head that because the character was already a joke that I was just going to be silly and play a hyperactive cat who did typical, cliche things like getting distracted by shiny objects and chasing lights. It was a hit with my friends. They laughed at my antics, praised me for being so in character, and my DM even helped with the act by sending me Skype messages like "This box he's about to open has a shiny amulet inside. You can grab it the second he opens it." So why was it a failure? Well, most Pathfinder Adventure paths start with some generic adventure hooks and then progress into an overarching story. It's easy to plaything at the start but the closer we got to the actual story the more I realized there was nothing to my character. She had no goals, I had no development planned for her, and her only motivation was "adventuring is fun lol". Luckily the game fell apart before I was forced to deal with the mess I had created. The success came when my DM wanted to try this hybrid of Pathfinder and D&D 5e. Someone had taken a Pathfinder adventure path and converted it to the D&D 5th edition system. I had desperately wanted to play a Wild Magic Sorcerer and I saw my opportunity to play a contrast to the AP as this was the one where you discover advanced (alien) technology. Already I've set myself up for comedy. Wild Magic means random things can happen when I do certain types of magic. One roll can turn me into a potted plant, one can cast Fly on a random target, some just add damage of a random type, but most of the time nothing extra actually happens. I'm also playing a Gnome from the Feywild First World which basically means I'm the embodiment of chaotic and unexplained magic and thus the opposite of all this science and technology that's going to be thrown at us. The character is not made purely for comedy the character is comedic because of situations she's placed in. She had goals and motivations in that she was fascinated by all the technology and wanted to study it. She didn't understand how it wasn't magic and she needed to know how it worked and where it came from! I still took every chance I saw to deliver funny dialogue when it felt natural or fitting and brought in extra laughs when I was actually brave enough to do my best impression of one of my favorite WoW dragons gnomes. So basically don't just make a character to be a joke. The funniest jokes are the ones that come naturally. Rather than having your character forced to crack jokes you might have more success crafting situations where the humor can just come out. That said I'm not by any means saying not to crack jokes as that seems to be what you're going for. Make all the bad puns you want but be careful about forcing them into someone's serious scene.
  7. I attempt to RP outside of the game as often as I can and I play D&D/Pathfinder weekly so to answer the title alone: yes. VRchat specifically though? I think that's a level I couldn't handle. I struggle with D&D because I'm often afraid to give voice to my character. VRchat would be like a step above that and a step below LARPing.
  8. As a setting, Eureka is absolutely amazing. It's like a theme park of outdoor settings. There's a coast, there's jungle looking areas, forest looking areas, I swear I saw a cave once, and there's all these little run down buildings that would make perfect shelters for adventurers caught in bad weather. Once I got a group that actually left the coast I thought "Damn, it'd be so easy to set a scene here!" and then realized that such a thing would be far too ambitious for me. As a place for RPing? Well....the system's a nightmare. Leveling is horrendously slow and tedious so you can't easily out level the enemies to walk around safely. You can only change jobs in town so you couldn't just stealth to the place you wanted to get to and switch classes for RP. The first Aetheryte requires you to be level 9 to attune to and no mounting means you literally have to walk around everywhere dodging aggressive enemies as you go. Do I think it's possible to RP there? Sure but I don't know if it'd honestly be worth the hassle of finding a safe place and getting everyone there.
  9. Honestly? You can probably get away with avoiding Rowena and not having to use a crafter character easily. The Garlond Ironworks creates the gear and Rowena distributes it but that doesn't mean you have to 100% adhere to that. It's hardly a stretch to just cut out the middle man that is Rowena and say the Ironworks just produces it for well off adventurers. The Lost Allagan stuff is a bit of a stretch but I believe it's the Sons of Saint Coinach that unearth a lot of Allagan artifacts? I know they find the Summoner AF gear and are key in the Crystal Tower story. Maybe they unearthed the Lost Allagan gear and released the designs to Redolent Rose who's trying to start an antique fashion trend? I'm sure there's lots of ways you could write around that without having to use Rowena or an IC crafter.
  10. Since I was recently asked if I was still around, I guess perhaps I should mention that I'm pretty much always looking unless I'm on hiatus or completely swamped. So until I close this thread feel free to hit me up.
  11. Ah, okay. When it comes to me personally, I'm a person who very much wants to improve. Constructive criticism is important and I like when people can not only tell me what I'm doing wrong but how I can do it better. The thing is not everyone is open to criticism and that's why you have to be careful. Remember, unsolicited advice will almost always come off as condescending regardless of your intentions. I would start by asking them if they're aware of the fact they're doing it. As other people have mentioned, English may not be their first language. Judge their response and reaction to that. If they seem open, ask them if that's something they'd like to improve on. If they're open to the idea then you can explain the words or simply link them to one of those articles about commonly mistaken words. If they're not open to the idea then drop it. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink.
  12. You say you know the difference between typos and consistent mistakes but you refer to it as them slipping up? The wording has me a little confused since I'm reading "slip up" as a mistake but you saying you know the difference as it being consistent. If they're consistently using the wrong word? Tell them but be polite about it. I personally would want someone to tell me something like that so I can correct my mistakes. If they're just making a lot of typos? Let it go. MMO RP demands fast typing and the chat system makes it hard to catch mistakes.
  13. I think it can be fun when people make their Miqo'te or Au Ra a little more animalistic but there's a very fine line between me finding it amusing and me finding it annoying. The ones who want to have more sensitive hearing, very expressive ears, or do the 'cat sit' a lot are perfectly fine. The ones who nya, talk about breeding, or have tails so sensitive they're turned on by people touching them are the one's I'll avoid. What do I do with my character? Very little. As sort of a joke about lizards being cold blooded she tends to have cold hands and likes warmth (ie fire places and hot baths). Her tail isn't particularly expressive. It sways when she walks and it gets stiff when she's tense. It's movements I feel are so obvious I often forget to mention them in RP. About the only thing that's possibly out of the ordinary she does with it is tap it or swish it to music especially when she doing it to keep time. I'm firmly of the belief that the fewer head canons in an RP the better. Everyone is on the same page and nobody has to worry about which way is more accurate. If someone wants to say their Miqo'te or Au Ra has above average hearing, for example, I tend to just roll with it and adjust my character slightly if necessary.
  14. Bumping for a small update. I'm now a little busier on some days due to raiding. Replies may come slower if things get too hectic. I am still very open though!
  15. Bumping this before everyone gets dragged into the 4.2 madness. Still looking to set things up!
  16. Well, this has been on my to-do list for literally months and New Year's is the time to get things done, right? My schedule tends to run a little weird and the fact I'm on PST tends to put my availability late. Couple that with the fact that things like D&D demand my attention during the times people tend to be RPing and it's a recipe for an insane amount of difficulty RPing in game. I'm really slow at typing too so I might as well be doing slower forms of RP anyways. So as the title says I'm looking to RP outside the game itself. I'm used to using forums, Discord, and Skype but if you have something else in mind you can try throwing that at me. I typically hold myself to a standard of one post a day minimum though post length and how much I'm currently juggling sometimes means I can crank out more or be reduced to less. As this is a slower style of RP, I also typically expect at least a paragraph per post and I do my best to match length if I'm given at least that. In the interest of keeping this post from going on too long you can find more of my preferences and a short description of my character over here. Feel free to ask for more info on anything! Don't let the Balmung tag over there stop you either. I'm happy to RP with people from any server. Last but not least I would like to warn everyone reading this that since I sort of keep disappearing and reappearing here I'm still very new to FFXIV RP. Naturally, I'm here looking to change that. I'm not confident enough with my knowledge to make my own plots but I'm more than happy to play a role in others' stories. I'm also more than happy to bounce ideas back and forth until we've come up with something. I'd like to think I'm decent with starting points but I falter when it comes to moving things along or wrapping them up. Despite the age of this post, it's been an absolute nightmare finding people willing to go out of game. I'm more comfortable with my lore knowledge than I was in the past but I still don't have a lot of experience. I like getting a feel for my partner's writing style, preferences, and character before putting forth my own plots, scenes, hooks, etc but I'm still very, very new to such things. Feel free to reply here, shoot me a PM, or hit me up on Discord at Oaris#0605. I have to say I have been hesitant about publicly posting my Discord in the past simply because I like knowing who's adding me ahead of time. You may have to poke me a few times to get my attention once I finally notice I have a friend request and add you.
  17. I've never really done combat RP so I imagine I'd have to balance it around what the other people are doing. A 1v1, for example, is probably better off closer to realism but fighting a horde of Garleans probably requires your character taking a couple bullets. When I do personal writing I tend to have things closer to being realistic with magic protection being weaker. Since I can control what happens, I can have my character get more severe injuries at the end or run off to heal herself. Writing by yourself lets you do whatever you want but RPing requires cooperating so both parties are happy. Tsubaki wears partial leather armor when she knows she's going to get in a fight. Half the time she gets caught in her "adventuring clothes" which are more for protection from the environment than from weapons. Ideally, she keeps herself far away from danger and snipes so it isn't a problem. When she does take hits she can push past the pain and keep fighting but she can't last particularly long. She has healing abilities but they're very weak (ie she can close cuts but not cure poison or mend bones) and she has to concentrate too much to use them in a fight. A single bullet won't take her out of a fight if it doesn't hit anything vital it's the healing process that would take her out for a day (or more).
  18. Ugh, I guess that's fair. I've been doing too many tabletop RPGs honestly and nobody there seems to care 95% of the time. Characters getting along and having fun moments always seems to be the priority.
  19. I'm always happy to do out of game stuff. My schedule keeps me from meeting up with people a lot. :dazed:
  20. Tsubaki sounds a lot like Lamb from League of Legends (minus the echo effect obviously): [video=youtube] She's a very soft-spoken person but even after she gets a little bolder she still has a tendency to stare at the scenery and let her mind wander which results in her still sounding soft-spoken. Her singing voice is similar to Loreena McKennitt (minus the accent): [video=youtube] This also matches her preferred style of music which is folk songs with traditional (or at least acoustic) instruments. She also tends to sing with that soft, whispering quality. This is not to say she doesn't do other styles regularly or sing them in a different way, of course.
  21. There aren't really any other community designated servers. It's basically Balmung is the original/locked one, Mateus is the new/open one, and Omega is the EU one. Other than that it's a bunch of smaller scattered communities. None of the others I've seen have the same feel as those do. For example, their Quicksands aren't a hub for walk up RP. I can say Jenova looks pretty active and friendly but I can't say it's any better or worse than any of the other small communities.
  22. Nah, the wording in the first post is a little misleading. They're talking about the 2.0 (and 1.0?) voice actors getting replaced in 3.0 and on. SE has not gone back and redubbed all the 2.0 cutscenes with the new VAs.
  23. Yes! There's some I miss and some I don't, of course. I started playing shortly before 3.0 dropped so when all of that got added I was still going through all the 2.x stuff. This resulted in me going straight from 2.5 content into 3.0. Suddenly, all the voices were different immediately following several emotional scenes and it was jarring. Months later I discovered Critical Role and decided to replay the MSQ since I felt I rushed it a bit. It was really sad to fall in love with the characters and cast of that show while watching their voices disappear from FFXIV. If you're a tabletop RPG nerd or consider yourself a big enough fan of video game voice actors I can't recommend Critical Role enough. It's seriously Alphinaud and Thancred playing D&D with Illidan, Jaina, and Gazlowe with Rexxar DMing. Funnily enough it was just today I discovered Mary Elizabeth McGlynn is credited as Hydaelyn. I loved her on Critical Role and I absolutely adore Johanna (aka the Diablo 3 crusader) so it made me pretty sad to realize I'd never hear her in FFXIV again.
  24. I had a feeling my potentially poor wording would be misconstrued in exactly this way if I didn't specify. I opted not to for feeling I was being too wordy or explaining the wrong things. I usually do give everyone a chance without anyone needing to prove anything to me. When it comes to conflict, however, I want a chance to at least skim your character's wiki or Tumblr bio/info/history/backstory first. I'm going to paraphrase here but over the years I have seen the following: A sniper who never misses. This was a sniper with a gun, by the way, not some Robin Hood wanting to win every archery contest. The most powerful mage in the world. This was their setting but this was their PC not an NPC or villain. A character in their early 20s who was well-versed in every known type of magic. The setting stated that some of these types of magic were rare or unique to certain parts of the world. A character who was a good enough fighter that they never lost. They were literally saying if you fought them they wouldn't lose. Since it's been long enough and there's enough room for plausible deniability I will say that one of those examples, combined with what I saw of the person, is what prompted me to make that thread a few months ago. Seeing stuff like that not only tells me I don't want to do combat with you but that more often than not you're the type of person who can't handle a dispute well. I've found it's safer not to do anything that leads to any kind of conflict with those people. Something as seemingly mundane as eavesdropping can can turn into a problem. So, yes, I want to be asked first so I can no to people who look problematic.
  25. I don't really think that's an accurate metaphor, though? It's more along the lines of, what if you made a thread on a public forum and didn't clearly label it as closed in a community where such threads are typically understood/assumed to be open, and then proceeded to exclude or ignore anyone else who posted, or get angry with them, or message them OOC to tell them they can't be involved because it's private, etc.? /Say and /em and open world RP are generally fair game. It's assumed that if your avatar is standing there and you are posting in open chat there, your character is physically there in the world, and therefore approachable because they are, well, a part of the world all our characters are sharing and seeing. That's the draw of in-game MMO RP after all--that we have a complete little immersive IC universe here. If people want to have closed RP's in public channels, that's totally fine, but if others are gonna see them as standoffish, or rude, or weird because of it, I think the onus is on them to accept that for going against the norm and bringing out candy they're not going to share with the whole class. I guess that's fair since my example clearly had a tool to label. The point was really just to show examples where something being public didn't mean it had to be open for anyone. Really, it's the open to anyone part that bothers me. The part where simply saying no means you're "rude" or "standoffish" without people stopping to think you might have your reasons. Things like spying, eavesdropping, and blackmailing can be extremely sensitive. Heck, anything potentially leading to conflict can be sensitive. I've dealt with my share of bad RPers (bad players in many cases) so that's not the sort of thing I'd want just anyone dropping on me without even asking. In any sort of conflict, I want to see you're not the sort of person to get pissy if things don't go the way you want (I have met too many of these people) before I engage in it. Most of the RPing I've done in the past has had to be consented to in some way or another. The forum stuff I did ages ago, for example, often required you to fill out a profile for your character and submit it to the person who made the thread for approval. This meant the characters involved usually fit the setting decently well and didn't have ridiculously powerful abilities. So this whole 'I can do any kind of interaction with any character without consent' comes off as a little scary to me.
