Dunno.  Could still be XIII-esq with a better cinematic camera.  Folks thought the same thing when they saw the Lightning action sequence when it was revealed.

Still, TBD on if this will be worth the hyping or not for me ... though if they use the full orchestral work for this.  YUM.

It looks like it's built on the same engine as FF15 which would explain how they have gameplay to show off so fast and why the gameplay and cutscene graphical fidelity look about the same. It would also make it easy to streamline combat as well since it wouldn't have to be much different.

I don't mind the combat being changed so long as it is engaging, rewards an element of strategy and not trivial in terms of difficulty. As great as the original game may be it wouldn't be a sound decision to just slap updated graphics on it and call it a day. Both major and quality of life changes needed to be made and I'm glad they the developers saw fit to do just that.

I'm very excited about being able to explore some of the more iconic locations and see what the major characters look like. I'm also hoping that there will be new areas to explore and that locations won't be cut from the final product.

I can see all the Cloud vs Noctis threads to be on Reddit because of the remake showing Clouds abilities as good as Noctis and Lightning. . .

Prepare for hell vvv

Anyway I can't wait for this, real time combat is always a weakness of mine especially after playing God of War.

The combat really isn't doing anything for me. Something along the lines of FFX's ATB system would have been a nice middle ground, but not the FFXV action system. It's clunky as hell to use in the demo.

The question is whether they're going to truck ahead with this considering how polarized the community is. Personally I'm hoping that they make amends; Bravely Default has shown that people are eager to play more games with an ATB system, and changing the core combat mechanics of a very popular game are always going to be risky.

tl;dr

It's a bold strategy Cotton, let's see if it plays off.

Gameplay looks pretty damn nice. I am so glad they're not just making the same game from 1997 with a shiny coat of paint. I promise the original FF7 isn't going anywhere, you guys who want turn-based combat! Can verify, as I'm playing it right now. :P

Can't wait to see how Vincent plays.

Also, no crappy Genesis stuff shown yet, which is a huge plus!

I'm gonna be the one to say it and will probably get chewed out for it but fuck it.

In my opinion, turn based combat is dead these days, people should get over it.

I somewhat agree, but it works well for some games. Bravely Default/Second and Dragon Quest are still carrying that torch. But you're absolutely right that most are moving towards outright action or some kind of hybrid system a la Tales and Star Ocean.

This.

Looks damn solid. Assuming the "fluff" quests and minigames are heavily toned down, this could end up becoming the "definitive edition" of the game. :D

Turn based combat was considered old when Lost Odyssey came out ... 8 years ago.

I understand that there's still a good amount of people that prefer straight up turn based. Yeah, I'll agree that it's refreshing sometimes to see turn-based combat make a comeback. But don't rule what they have right now out just yet, it might just be better.

People are getting what their inner childhood have wanted for years and years. They're getting Final Fantasy VII updated to the 21st century. This includes graphics that can finally be the splitting image of our imaginations about the world the game took place in and its characters. This 21st century update also includes the gameplay.

No, it won't be a carbon copy of the Playstation classic, but at the end of the day I don't think the audience truly desires the same exact game. From what I see from the trailer it's the game we remember from our childhood all grown up. People change when they become adults, but not always for the worse. That's how I see it, and I think that's exactly what the majority of people wanted out of this remake.

I didn't think it would look this good, personally. I'm stoked.

You know, after looking at the interface you'll notice there is a "Defend" option.

Given how reminiscent this is of Kingdom Hearts and how much this looks like a RTB Hack and Slash I kneejerked into assuming that as well....until I noticed that.

Why would you have a selectable "Defend" option with a RTB system? You wouldn't.

Perhaps it's just a updated and very pretty turn based system?

......

*crosses fingers?*
