A character concept you always wanted to try...

Recommended Posts

For a few years, I've wanted to play the brother of a twin sister played by someone else.  It might sound like a fairly simple concept, but I just don't have anyone I currently feel close enough with to try building up that kind of relationship.  Most of my old RP friends are either in games I don't or won't play or have drifted away from RP for the time being (such as those busy with both young kids and a job or three), and I haven't really grown super close to anyone here yet.  I'm sure the opportunity will present itself sooner or later, it just hasn't yet.  Obviously I could just say my character has a twin sister, but where is the fun in that?

I would also like to eventually try something like a formerly great warrior who is now old and senile, and he sees everything as if it were a grand quest or epic battle.  Even something simple as fighting a low-level Mandragora would seem to him as if he were fighting a horde of demon infested giant Dragon Hybrid Mandragora of Doom.  It wouldn't be difficult for him, he just doesn't see reality for what it is.

A few ideas, though generally I try to challenge my writing skills when it comes to rp.. so some ideas are probably better than others.

I think the main thing I have longed to rp out or play as a sort of main character would be a villain so to speak. At the least a character that would be seen to the common folk as being evil or not trusted. I got this idea from a necromancer OC I had years ago. i loved him to death and even with his vat powers he had weaknesses and could easily find himself in over his head.

My main issue with playing a evil character or a darker character so to speak is that it's hard for me to grasp being that character that people will likely hate. Not to mention the slew of do gooders and heroes that would surely flock at the thought of conflict or that there is some evil do'er.

Just never figured a way to keep things fresh for myself and everyone else involved with such a character. Most that I have met take ic and ooc too similarly so I never wanted to risk it.

--------

The other concept I've never gotten to go far or even really started was my character adopting a kid or least a teen, maybe young adult that needed a bit of guidance. Just a idea that I always enjoyed. Just as I love training or teaching others ic'ly I just felt this would be a good fit if I could ever get a hold of someone for the role.

A generic fantasy hero. Nice guy who has a one-handed sword and doesn't afraid of anything. And a cat boy. Kinda because everyone else seems to have done it and I never have ?

I already kinda have a character in mind but I'd have to... 1) get him onto Balmung, 2) level up Paladin on him so he can have a one-handed sword and I don't like tanking, 3) get him through the MSQ because I want him to be from the griffin tribe so he should be from, like, the sea of clouds or at least Dravania somewhere, right? but that's so time consuming and also miserable

Always wanted an Allagan clone/genetic experiment that survived into modern day like the dudes in the CT line.

....

Tried it...couldn't get it to work.

That and....a female character who isn't annoying. I can't do it. I cannot write female characters who don't piss me off while writing them >.<

I get the same feeling playing human characters, so I almost understand how you feel.  Playing fantasy races are like breathing to me, but playing a human...  It feels a lot like this:

I've mentioned a few of these in the previous thread, particularly the wealthy pirate of leisure with a pyromaniac streak and the posessed weapon that fantasias to represent each new wielder. These didn't work for me because of expense; I want the character to look the part and have the appropriate props in game to complete my plan.

The more recent idea I have that I want to play, but fear I could not execute to my own satisfaction is a retired strategist character. Yes, yes you know the one. I am a big fan of Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Chinese military fiction seems to be filled to choking with talented scholars of dubious morality who basically duel each other using their lords and holdings as pawns. Likewise in Suikoden, I was very fond of the Silverburg family and their various students. I would love to play such a character. However, there is the problem of scale. We don't have open war in the setting at the moment, and being a strategist holds little worth. In addition, just sort of being able to dig through a person's records, know all the rumors, or just plain intuit what kind of person they are through deduction can be seen as metagaming even if your character clearly demonstrates how they did it. I also would play them disgruntled and lame (In the literal sense only I hope...) and that may put off people. Ultimately it would require a lot of planning and cooperation to make big, large scale schemes for a war that's not happening yet and I just am not sure it's worth it.

I've always wanted to play the generic peasant, someone who just goes to work the fields or peddle bullshit knickknacks his father-in-law made or something equally mundane. At night he retires to the tavern for a few rounds before heaving his miserable form home for the night.

GEEZ I feel this so much!! I really get into fantasy races and their lore and culture and how these things are influenced by their different physiologies...

So even though I almost never play the human (or human stand-in), it's also not a thing I've "always wanted to try". At this point I don't even consider it an option.

I guess Roegadyn women are an exception in this case-- I have three-- while they're not this game's "humans" they're also not especially short, or really big like the men, nor have any extra appendages or pointy ears or whatever. they're about the closest thing I've gotten to playing a vanilla human character.

Crotchety old woman who previously held social/political influence but, since retirement or otherwise dethroning has instead fallen into a murky shadow of fireside rockingchair knitting circles, full of gossip and complaints against rule-breakers and "those young knuckleheads" so on and so forth.

I got a taste of it with an old npc marquesa, with limited influence herself but significant amidst her more powerful family, with such character interplay as thus -

Five minutes later, the Illustrious Dona had been settled in a comfortable armchair that had, at her insistence, minimal padding. Costanca had not yet found a chair of her own, instead standing beside some of the pieces of artwork that Sarita had decorated the room with. One vase in particular had caught her attention, since it meant she had to face away from Guiomar to properly look at it.

"Must you continue to wear such outrageous colors?"

"There's nothing wrong with orange, dearest Aunt. The colors I favor remind me of spring."

"Yes, well, that spring has long since passed for you, carino. You look the part of a fat tangerine."

Costanca grit her teeth against a sly, spiteful reply, and turned so she could favor her elder relative with a beaming smile. "How dear of you to think of me," she said.

Guiomar watched Diego leave the room with eyes that openly displayed her disdain. Her attention thereafter settled on Costanca's gently waving fan. "Is there a gala you shall be attending?" the Marquesa asked.

The aristocratic accent she used to prey upon her lessers with was most pronounced.

"I am merely overwhelmed by your presence, Illustrious Dona," Costanca sank into a deep curtsey. It didn't even take effort for the accompanying simper. The fan was, once more, shut away and hidden within its discrete pocket.

Guiomar's jowls quavered as she sat back, the sagging skin untroubled by any magical embellishments. Guiomar had nothing against magic, of course, but she liked to remind people of her age. As she'd remarked loudly and often, she had no need of looking the part of a young floozy as so many of her contemporaries seemed to. "Are you quite certain it is assassination that continues to decimate the Senora Costanca's fiances, and not suicides?" The question was addressed to Sarita.

"I must plead apology for the long hours that have kept me from attending your needs," Sarita responded, blithely skipping over the insult before Costanca even had a chance to prepare her returning salvo.

Sarita was never any fun.

that had to be one of my most favorite rps (it helped that my partner absolutely excels at subtle snark and wit), and since then the hankering to play gossipy old 70-80 year olds has had me. Circumstance and other rp whims, however, keep drawing my attention elsewhere.

This hits home for me too hahaha, I have posted about it before, but I have a hard time playing anything but Lalafell after years of Tarutaru on XI.  I do have other races for my alts, but human...I tend to get halfway through character creation and then just give up and go back to something else...it would be interesting to play a human style character in XIV, but maybe would never quite fit for me.

I was also thinking about the older fellow bit after I posted earlier, there just aren't a lot of appealing designs for the older generation except maybe...Miqo'te? Roes aren't bad either, but elezen elder designs make me sad, because I wish I could do a bit more with it to make it usable.

A 'Good' young character.  A true, idealistic, out to change the world sort of paladin who only sees the good in people.

I've never played it it, cause honestly, I could never do the character justice.  I'd slip and say something snarky, or rude, IC and mess it all up and get them out of character. lol

Plus I like rping villains to much.

I love Baccano! Accidentally ended up with an unintentional Isaac x Miria couple, though, whoops. They're fun, though!

As for what I want to play, I'd like to play the stereotypical charming, asshole, rogue mercenary! You know, the handsome, cocky, womanizing man of questionable morals who's only concerned about himself. I'm just afraid it would come across as a kinda sexist depiction, you know, a one-dimensional sexual fantasy character made for the purpose of fan service and ERP--that's how that sort of character often seems to come across, at least, especially when played by women. I don't want to be that person.

I also really want to play a really angsty, brooding, man-baby. I just want to be a man, okay? Leave me alone. Let me be handsome.

I don't often get character ideas beyond just "I want to play this personality style," but there's one that popped into my head a while back and I shared with a few people.

I kinda want to play a character who charms a small group of novice healers into following him/her around. A personality that's hard not to follow, even if just to see what they'll do. With more brains or ambition they might have been a great leader, but instead it's just some bullheaded idiot constantly getting into trouble and needing their medic buddies to bail them out. GREAT for a healer's resumé! An unending fount of practical experience! Wacky hijinks! Like a harem anime but with less romantic tension and more facepalming!

I suppose I could almost justify moving my current character in that direction, but she doesn't quite have the sheer force of personality (or dashing charmer looks) that would make it work.

Also, of course, it's a concept that requires other people to go along with it, which is a good way to end up never playing a character in the first place.

Yuri was almost this character. THE SAD THING IS SINCE NO ONE KNOWS HER BACKSTORY I COULD EASILY STILL CHANGE IT TO THIS. AAAAAA. I just love this character and the struggle.

As for why I don't just blatantly rip her off and just go 'weeee pretty princess turned rogue' is because it's overdone. Not like she could do anything with her princessyness outside of her little area in Doma anyway (no I'm not doing a direct cross-over, I'd just be ripping it off so so much), especially since she's now in Eorzea. It's unlikely anyone would know (just like her being a ninja is unknown), but I've never been one for playing any character with any sort of political power.

Edited to add: I also like playing the villain type, but everyone always wants to 'hurry up and kill the bad guy' instead of having a long time enemy to fight. I've also always wanted to try playing a horribly racist person, but have always decided against it because lately people like to assume that because your character is x means your that way OOC. This time I'm going to bite the bullet and do with Marcelloix. He'll be my little Elezen jerk who hates everyone except fellow Ishgardians.

A levemete is a concept I've always wanted to try, have a house rigged up as an adventurers bar where players can either submit or take on leves and then subsequently either let them DM themselves or DM it for the group/player who took it out. I love variety in my roleplay (which Ffxiv hating on alts makes a pain to satisfy) so being able to craft leves of all shapes, sizes and difficulties would be great fun to offer people. Unfortunately time constraints make it unrealistic to pull off, a shame as crafting plotlines and devising challenges for characters to reveal themselves in is great fun.

My original character ideas always revovle around the discovery of magic... Or are boring mundane people... (A sweet, loving cellist working at the Honey farms in East shroud. A Moonkitty from a secretive, reclusive tribe in the thick of the shroud... An unattractive beggar living around Ul'dah. )

So instead of that... I would LOVE to make an Eorzean Patsy Stone character from Ab Fab. It would be so much fun!

Patricia Stone:

-Mail order Bride from Ishgard

-Marries into wealth in Ul'dah

-Kills her husband inheriting a large sum of Gil.

-Starts a fashion magazine

-Lives a life of excessive luxury (free clothes, suitors, drugs, gil)

Patsy Stone, gorgeous (aging) elezen woman escapes her social status in Ishgard to start a new life in the south. She sleeps, drinks, smokes, shoots and snorts her way to fame.

Queue the rampant drug abuse! Where are the sexy men to objectify!

I have joked with a friend that doesn't rp about doing a hellsguard called Blackest Baron as a joke and parody of Anarchy Reigns' Blacker Baron. An extremely egotistical monk wearing all purple with golden fist while speaking in a odd tongue. I've only ever thought about to be more a joke then something I would really do just due to how.... easy it would be to anger a few people.

On a more likely note, I have an idea for a female Seawolf I've been kicking around for the past few weeks due to working alot of extra hours but I really need to focus on Asmo. Maybe if I have more time I'll work on her more.

I'm re-posting here because something came up.

I wanna make my forum characters in-game. Both Snarl from Intense Pasta and Kali Kalrath the Lalafell on the Path.

Problems? Well..,there's the problem of getting two new characters on Balmung. There's the problem of getting both characters across the realm to make them available for events. And there's making them get in to events which happen during weekends...the days I'm working.

I mean, I adore the concepts and they generally get positive reactions and are fun for people...but ultimately I don't think it'd work out. Which is kind of a downer, really.
