"Ugh I need to update my character's Wiki"

Maybe the fact that I've never updated my wiki means that it needs to be updated.  Maybe I'll try to arrange it according to a template but I don't really like any of the templates I've seen because some of the sections in them seem a little less encyclopedic and more "facebook profile" kind of stuff.  I just want to keep my wiki as a kind of resource for people who are RPing with me and need meta-info on Lilia for whatever reason.

I think I need to add more detail about Lilia's family though and possibly some description of her role in her free company (since it's probably company members who will be reading it more than anyone else).

(Edit) One thing I'd like to do is add more NPC rumours. Specific NPCs, like guildmasters or NPC vendors. I'm not sure whether or not that's really done though or considered appropriate.

You all think updating is bad? My dumb arse decided to delete everything when I left so now I have to start Xydane's Wiki page all over.

This is going to be a long weekend. I am definitely paying the price for my idiocy.

You didn't just clear the wiki so you could revert it?  But the rumors! :(

I know, I know. Like I said, I am sooo paying the price for it! :frustrated:

I barely know where to start, having never edited a wiki before. But if it's anything like the BBCode on forums I'll be okay.

...is it? Anything like BBCode?

Yes, it is. You're just taking a template (you can make your own or use someone else's if they allow it, which is usually at the bottom of their Wiki page), and mashing up a lot of codes together. You'll be constantly previewing your Wiki page in order to edit and format it to your choosing.

It's not difficult really but just time consuming because you're editing a page to your style. I spent an day working on mine because I was editing colors, sections, and all that good stuff.

To start, simply go on the FFXIV Wiki page and on the top right portion is a "Log In" section. Simply log in using your Username and PW that you use to access the FFXIV HRC. I would suggest looking at other people's Wiki page for ideas and like I stated before, if they post that their template can be used.

Nothing wrong with that. My GF did that for a bunch of her characters, most notably Sabine Aislihn, who has interacted with the vast majority of the guildmasters due to at least poking at each of the crafts/gathers.

I couldn't figure out how to get a picture to show up in the morning so I gave up \(´・ω・`)/

I napped and ate so I'm giving it another try but still not having any success. How can I get an uploaded image (thissun) to show up in the wiki page?

reference it with File:Ss%2B(2015-07-17%2Bat%2B04.51.40).jpg

If this is for the character infobox though, you only need to put the filename in.

...although, I'd suggest to rename and reupload if possible, so you have an easier time using it.

I sometimes want to make a wiki. I have one started. Sort of. Well, finish the one I'm working on. I just..ugh. It seems like a lot of work for something that I wonder if people will even pay attention to, or I worry about it becoming metagame information for someone trying to start nonsense, so every time I want to work on it, I end up going 'bleeegh'. It's also a case of /effort a lot of the time.

I see people bring up the "metagaming" issue of having a wiki a little too often when there's a REALLY easy solution to it. If there's info you wouldn't want someone to know, don't put it there. A few people I know basically just have a small bio, picture of their character and maybe a acquaintances/rumors section. Stuff that people could pick up on if they were wandering around or looking to RP with a given character.

I also know others who have a designated "RP Hooks" section. (because I copied the idea from someone else).

I don't think there's much need to fear 'meta-gaming'. If someone does decide to meta-game information that their character wouldn't realistically have at their disposal...then simply take it as a sign that they're not really someone you want to interact with anyway.

So far I haven't encountered any issues in regards to people abusing the information I've laid out over on my character's wiki page. I do choose to keep some stuff deliberately vague, admittedly, but that's more to do with being my personal preference since I don't want to ruin potential surprises in advance.

Yeah, I haven't had much issue with anyone using any of the substantial information I have in Chachan's page. Plus, I like to think that having the information available might also help as possible hooks? I dunno. I think it'd be neat for someone to see something and go "Oh hey, I think we could do something fun with that" and then present the idea (preferably OOCly through PMs or a /tell and not just springing it on you, of course).

Also, there's spoiler tags you can use in the wiki for stuff you might want to have there but not immediately out in the open. I've been flip-flopping using them for characters with more sensitive backgrounds... but still want the information there for the aforementioned playing-off of.

I've done this several times and I find it really fun and interesting.  Whenever I read about someone who has been a member of the Immortal Flames, or who grew up in Ul'dah, I start thinking of possibilities for sharing elements of our backstories.

That's really the best use of the wikis in my opinion, to give your character context for the purpose of developing RP plot ideas.  I wouldn't use it as a way of divulging "deep dark secrets" because I think part of the fun of RP is the discovery of these things through interaction.  We're all taking part in a cooperative storytelling exercise, after all, so we have a responsibility to one another not to spoil the stories that we're telling.

I think this is the best way to use a Wiki. I have a few hints about where Asmodean story is going to have but for the most part it's just a bit of background for other to look at and see if they like. I just hate looking back at mid cause I always find something I forgot to edit last time I was editing, leading to my annoyance.  >.< Always miss something. Also a good way to kept track of Asmodean thought on people he has encountered and what he may have heard and in fact knows about them.

So this is weird, and I don't know where else to ask it, but

I've noticed on mine and my friends' character's pages there's a new item in the infobox for "Server" and it's listed as "Unknown". Now when I go to my character's page to edit it, it's not there to edit. I assume it updates based on what category the character's page is in? Since there are Balmung and Gilgamesh categories? How do you change this?

edit: I tried throwing [[Category: Balmung]] in there so it'd update the category the page was in but it still didn't work? Still says unknown? How fix pls advise

edit 2: I guess you're just manually supposed to add | server = Balmung (or Gilgamesh) to the infobox. Kinda sucks, I'd rather it not be there at all or at least be able to change where in the infobox it is
