I used to dream lucid all the time when I was a kid. It would start as a nightmare and at some point I'd realize I could control everything. That hasn't happened since I grew up, but I haven't exactly put any effort into it. I wonder if I could if I tried.

I'm in the Ice boat, too. Despite having nothing to do with Ishgard herself, Qhora's patron is Halone, and has been since before she went off the deep end. They've got some things in common. While Heavensward isn't likely to have a huge effect on her story, Qhora's always had a favorable leaning toward those cranky Elezen, so she'll probably be like a cat with cream to finally get to see the place up close. And as per in-game resistances, she doesn't feel the cold as much while the heat wears on her a bit faster.

There's a silly anime called The Devil is a Part-Timer where Satan (from a highly trippy canon in its own right) ends up in "the real world" and works at MgRonald's. Yeah. Anyway, what makes the story is where he came from, even though he can't share it with the populace - Satan serving burgers, ahha! And then... he makes manager! Granted, what also makes the story are the other characters from his world, the part where they're theoretically trying to get back to the place they came from and/or deciding whether or not they'd like to stay, and the part where he can hulk out in Satan-mode when he needs to. A roleplayer trying this kind of cross-dimensional thing probably isn't going to have the benefit of interactions with other characters from their previous world (unless they bring their own, which starts to move into weird) and really can't hulk out in PreviousDimension-mode without ruining ordinary folks' fun. What I mean to say is there's an element to Valkyrie-working-at-a-fried-fish-stand-in-Eorzea that a player might find fun, but they'd have to find it fun all on their own, without anyone else's approval, without the benefit of anyone else being in on that part of the story, except maybe in a not-taking-oneself-seriously way. There's no real reason to remove that element of the fun, unless it starts getting in the way of a desire to be part of the community, which right off the bat it can obviously do.

"Do not worry after me. I will be careful, and return to you." Is probably what that woman in the background was writing down on her notebook as she saw a wild Clio and Erik appear out of nowhere and uhh hmm use 'romantic moment(?)'. I think she has her own headcanon of those two and will publish it into a book. This Skywatcher declares the weather to be... (•_•).. ( •_•)>⌐■-■.. (⌐■_■).. steamy.

I'm generally okay with cross-dimensionality as a writing exercise or creativity builder, but people who I've roleplayed with who have gone with it have all eventually either shifted their character to be more in line with the overall accepted world in order to get more out of the community or packed up and left. I wouldn't avoid roleplaying with someone because of lore breaking or cross-dimensionality, but what I would do is have my character react as they would, which is with sheer disbelief, and recommending the lunatic being locked away for their own safety. That's worked well with people who didn't need to be taken too seriously, and helped bring others to understand why they were being avoided. I'd say there's no need for such rampant negativity, as criticisms can be worked into positive "tips", but the troll with this one is strong.

Might I recommend these TVTropes pages: The Sociopath Serial Killer Freudian Excuse Within all of those there is certainly room for money, power, and women to be motivators for horrible things, as well as for relatability with horrible people. The Joker is only one variant of horrible person, and he falls under Complete Monster. Not every villain is a complete monster. Many are not. Look at most of Batman's villain pantheon. A lot of them have triggering events that made them the way they are and direct their motives in relatable ways. Maybe not sympathetic ways, but understandable ones nonetheless. And some of them use sex, Poison Ivy coming to mind. I currently play a villain who would rather chop her own head off than have sex. I have also played a villain who was much more the sort to be found in the Quicksand. Que sera.

Is your character a good or a bad loser?
Darien Cadell replied to Maril's topic in Character Workshop
Yeah, I'd also say depends on the thing. She's not a really "fun & games" kind of person anyway. Games of chance, losing probably wouldn't faze her at all, unless she got suspicious of cheating, in which case she'd start plotting some sort of comeuppance, possibly out of proportion depending on the reasons for the cheating/how much she hated said cheater/what she actually lost, but even as a "bad loser", she'd try to make her revenge slow and indirect. Two weeks after Qhora walked away from the game table, cheater gets embarrassing public indigestion? Could've been anything or anyone. If it was like a job where someone kept turning the tables on her, she'd probably get progressively more and more dramatic with her response to each "loss". First time, eh, try again. Second time, what the hell, that's not right. Third time, godsdamnit, someone needs to die. Etc. That could be fun. -
Researching your RP: Clever Subtitle
Darien Cadell replied to Warren Castille's topic in RP Discussion
I have inadvertently done research on psychopathy in the past for school projects and watching a lot of television and reading for entertainment. Qhora isn't quite in line with all of those, but I'm sure it helps a bit. -
How Would Your Character go through the Five stages of Grief.
Darien Cadell replied to Cynel1's topic in Character Workshop
She wouldn't. She'd get stuck on Anger and never leave. Which is pretty much what happened with her family. -
Pretty much what I think, although I don't think self-insertion is restricted to preexisting settings. You can make a beautifully original setting and insert yourself into it with the whole author-failure-to-engage problem Warren mentioned. Because of its origins, the term has a feminine leaning, and people can use it, if they so desire, to demean the gender without taking into account that self-insertion is a genderless concept. And sometimes people so desire. And the sexism that can be there perpetuates. Batman is a bad example, though. He's a hero, but he's far from universally approved of within his own canon. The police are constantly on his case for vigilanteism in pretty much every variation of his existence. There are plenty of characters within his world who consider him a threat to law and order. He's just a hero, regular type. Heroes by definition are loved, but while he has fans, he has detractors, too. Mary Sue can't have detractors.

Oh dear. That's pretty much the default position. Without the fr- of course. She does try to give people the benefit of the doubt, but she has so many issues, most people open their mouths and Qhora already hates them, or she'll be genuinely surprised not to hate them when they open their mouths, and ten minutes later, she hates them. It makes her job easy, though, and gives her something to write about.

That's curious, I got stuck on Storm repeatedly when trying to get Royal.

She used to get favorites-to-win at the Grindstone when she spectated. That's probably as close as she gets to crushing. It's got a sort-of-admiration level to it? Sadly, it's been so long since I've had a chance to RP, I don't remember who they were. She does really like M'sato when he's at his most jackass. She could sit and listen to him insult people forever. When he gets nice, though, she'd rather slap him, so he probably doesn't count as a crush either.

Heavensward Benchmark: What is this mount?
Darien Cadell replied to Kage's topic in FFXIV Discussion
There's some speculation on Reddit here: http://www.reddit.com/r/ffxiv/comments/2ydai7/spotted_a_new_mount_in_the_benchmark_teaser/ -
Looks like they put it at that number across multiple currencies, which is uhh....

In my experience, standard procedure with MMO expansions is some content available for everyone, most available for those who've run out of things to do in the old game, thus already have everything unlocked, so making it available only to them isn't a big negative. That market's already there. They're the ones who want/need their game expanded, as it were. If you want to see the new stuff and haven't done the old stuff, then there's always the option of not buying the new stuff until you've seen the old stuff. Technically you don't lose out on anything, except time, but that's time that was lost somewhere along the line before the expansion's arrival, at least relative to the expansion's usual targets. Alts, though, or rerolls, they're another kettle of fish, yeah. Technically, you've seen the old stuff, just not on that character, but it's something of a self-inflicted inconvenience in this game at least. That's not saying it wouldn't be nice for more of the new stuff to at least be accessible for exploration and visibility for everybody. It would. I just see why it's not a priority.

Insert your character in another game.
Darien Cadell replied to ChewableMorphine's topic in Fun Prompts
I could see Qhora as a Mass Effect companion. My Shep would take her everywhere for the snark, and she'd be worth having for her story quests. Some sort of Thane/Kasumi/Zaeed/Jack lovechild. -

What scares you away from a FC/Guild?
Darien Cadell replied to Branson Thorne's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
I don't think I could be in a guild without a web presence, so web applications don't bother me at all. First thing I do when looking into guilds is check for a site and forums. In-game only would feel too ephemeral to me, not solid, without a place to refer to policies, leave and receive longer messages, etc. I've been in a few "RP-friendly" guilds in the past that were decent experiences as general social guilds, but I wouldn't tag them for anyone who actually wants to RP, no. They've generally had 2 or 3 RPers who go to the occasional server wide events or post stories on their forums, but that was it. They never organized events themselves or promoted RP in any way. I don't mind the voicechats, but I only use them for PvE if at all possible. I've pulled off listening without talking before. I'm just not comfortable using them for socializing, so if they were required for that aspect, it'd be a definite no. Size doesn't bother me. I've been in all sizes. Activity does. Big or small, if there's no one around, it's time to go. I don't mind quiet chats or a lack of greetings. I don't greet or farewell myself. It feels awkward and pushy to me. But if I don't see anyone log in at all for days? No point. I'm wary of PvE guilds that have high end restrictions. They're not bad, per se, obviously. It means said guild knows what they are and what they want in their members. But it also gives the impression they aren't willing to work on newcomers, and so be it. That's their prerogative, but I'd look elsewhere if I were shopping. I prefer freeform sorts of RP to structured storylines, so I'd probably be wary of a guild that advertised those, again, not because of inherent badness, but because it's just not my cup of tea. Scheduled events would be a plus, but episodic planned-out plotlines needing certain characters to do certain things, not so much. I prefer instigating single events and letting things flow. Again, if a guild has such a thing, it'd be generally positive, because that guild knows who they are and what they do. They just wouldn't be for me. -
[video=youtube] At first I was just after her voice, then I realized this is Qhora's mindset 99% of the time she's out in public, so yeah, theme song.

I've had some interesting conversations with people who designated themselves as such (not in FFXIV, mind), because I had the audacity to play with others that they deemed lunatic lorebreakers. Granted, said people were of the "I'm really a world-eating dragon" variety, but I saw it as an exercise in creative flexibility on my part, while my accusers seemed to think I was a glutton for punishment. Or something? I don't know what they were thinking really, but I do know that they suggested I not play with said others anymore. Um, okay. I just kept doing my thing with whoever I wanted. That was a long time ago, though. RP elitism doesn't come up all that often for me anymore. I definitely make loud WTF comments (that no one can hear) when people do odd things in PvE, but unless it actually becomes problematic for some reason, I usually just let it slide. Have myself a chuckle or an eyebrow raise and deal with it, especially since I've definitely been the one in their shoes at times. We were all noobs at some point.
