Heavensward Jobs, and Au Ra Lore now available
Brynhilde replied to Avalt Laguz's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Yep. Take the Ala Mhigans, for example; their migration into Greater Eorzea is very recent, having occurred only 20 years prior to ARR's launch, but the lore demonstrates loudly and frequently that very few of them have integrated into the cultures in which they now live. This isn't just a matter of them all being dirt poor and Ul'dah resenting their presence, either; quests in Little Ala Mhigo show that the 'Mhigans adhere stubbornly to their old customs and ways of seeing things. The fact that so few 'Mhigans have managed to rise above the poverty of Pearl Lane, Little Ala Mhigo and the refugee camps says to me not that they are the feckless, ne'er-do-well layabouts the wealthy Ul'dahns claim them to be, but rather that they struggle with the collective and powerful wounding to the psyche that inevitably comes as a result of people from a warrior culture being dropped into a culture in which their philosophy, skills and traditional ways are not only undervalued, but seen as dangerous, primitive and worthless. Like the 'Mhigans, the Au Ra Xaela are a warring people, and these cultures tend to be very proud. As such, we could reasonably expect the Xaela to cleave fiercely to their traditions and culture whatever they may be, wherever they find themselves living. -

It's not even limited to roleplay. We're interacting with strangers online, so there's always going to be a possibility of things not working. I've seen people blow up over rare drops, too. No intonation of text + no body language = minefields. OMFG NO U SAY IT TO MY FACE, BRYN FITE ME BRUH

Some good points made so far, many of which I agree with. For my part, I'll say that there's nothing inherently wrong with ERP, provided: Consent of both (or all! kinky.) parties is firmly established before hand. It's kept out of public chat channels, because of complications involving rule #1; not everyone wants to see it. OOC communication is strong and respectful. There aren't minors involved OOCly. The IC/OOC divide is kept firmly in place. Eventually we're going to have to accept that the anti-RP crowd are going to keep crying about how all RP is ERP no matter what we do, because that's the stereotype they've attached to us and like most stereotypes, they have very little basis in reality and are incredibly stubborn to shift. It's best not to try. For my part, I am an adult role-playing adult characters who possess sexualities. I want the characters I RP to be believable, well-rounded individuals and so I'm not going to shy away from portraying one whole facet of their identity because of some Victorian prudishness foisted upon the RP community by people who aren't even involved in it. Seriously, these people will judge us no matter what we do, and we shouldn't concern ourselves with pandering to their precious sensibilities.

How do you RP out GLD/Flash and MRD/Overpower?
Brynhilde replied to Tiergan's topic in RP Discussion
I've used Flash in RP before. Admittedly I may have an easier time of making it IC, as Bryn is also a conjurer and so has some minor aetherial talent. I RP it as a aether manifested as bright, searing light, as other have said. My reasoning for the enmity side of things is that Flash is so bright that it causes such intense pain to look at, and that really pisses the enemy off. Also, if the other team has a guy who can blind you without even touching you, you probably want to take him down quickish. -
Hi all, So there's something I've been pondering lately. I'm sure we've all had those moments when we've been RPing with a new RP partner and suddenly you think, "Wow, this person is a really good RPer." For me, beyond the obvious things like excellent spelling, punctuation and grammar, several things stand out in a great RPer; 1) Descriptive ability: can they convey a vivid image of their character's appearance and mannerisms without having to do it in two full paragraphs? 2) Dialogue: does it flow naturally? Does their character speak as a real person might, while still accounting for Eorzea's particular slang and dialects? Do they avoid clichés and overuse of ellipses? 3) The back-and-forth: to me, good RP is reciprocal; it offers ample and equal opportunities for all parties to get involved. A great RPer is considerate of their RP partners, and makes openings for them to engage the scene. ... I suppose to me, great RP encompasses both technique and ethos. My question to you is; what impresses you in other peoples' RP? What qualities, to you, make a truly great RPer? And in keeping with the spate of happy-feely threads on the RPC of late, if you want to mention any RPers you know as possessing the qualities of great RPers that you mention, go right ahead. It's always nice to get a heads-up on who I should track down for RP.

Explain an instance in the stupidest way possible
Brynhilde replied to Kellach Woods's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
AV: "Don't stand in the piss." WoD: (Garms) "Don't stand in the shit." (Angra Mainyu) "Stand in the shit, but make sure it's the right kind of shit in the right order." (Five-headed dragon) "Stand in some of the shit but not the other shit." (Cerberus) "You stood in the shit without standing in the other shit first, dumbass." (Cloud of Darkness) "IF YOU SEE SHIT, STAND IN IT." -

Final Fantasy XIV Heavensward Opening Movie [SPOILERS FOR 2.55]
Brynhilde replied to allgivenover's topic in FFXIV News
I'm liking that new hairstyle on the miqo machinist. You know you're an RPer when you're just as excited over aesthetic content as you are with actual new gameplay content. Also, I just want to say - the particle effects on those lamps in the benchmark are beautiful. I'm looking forward to the DX11 support coming with Heavensward. [edit] also, does that DRK great sword remind anyone else of Soul Calibur? I was getting strong Nightmare vibes. -
I'd much rather see us get a 'classless' state, or some sort of soul crystal that permits us to mix and match all equipable gear but locks us out of combat. That way we could RP without the limitations of class-specific gear. Bonus points for SE if we can use the animations of all the abilities our character has learned. More emotes are welcome, particularly emotes valuable to RPers but frustratingly missing from the game, such as /play dead or /lay down, a /limp walking animation, etc. More prop items akin to the claws you can buy at the gold saucer, such as bloody bandages and equipable steins with a drinking animation would be great, too. In short, I'd much rather see animations and props implemented that can be used by all sorts of characters as opposed to specific kind of characters (no vampires please dear god the last thing I want is to have to dodge sex-obsessed vampire edge-lords in the quicksand. I don't want to go back to Goldshire, thanks)

The only thing that could make this pic gayer is if Bryn was surrounded by Femroe strippers. -
Final Fantasy XIV Heavensward Opening Movie [SPOILERS FOR 2.55]
Brynhilde replied to allgivenover's topic in FFXIV News
Interesting. The derplander is portrayed as being the direct counterpart of the PC through 2.55. Although I can't imagine the story would railroad us into joining the ranks of the dragoons. I hope. Also, those floating land masses we've seen are directly above and around Ishgard. So can we expect some sort of big event that sunders the land? They remind me a lot of the floating islands of Nym. Also looks like Ul'dah will continue to play a significant role, possibly with Lolorito taking power. -
And then it turns out to be software and dvd piracy.

Banned for being far too suave and dashing.

This. The lore has stated that the Resistance is still very much alive and well in Gyr Abania. I took Pipin's line to mean that he had been working with the Resistance in an individual capacity, or as has been said, with the Ala Mhigan Flames cohort. As Raubahn's adopted son, it's possible that Pipin is himself also 'Mhigan and thus has an interest in freeing AM. And I expect the liberation of Ala Mhigo to be expansion pack #2, as it seems to me to be the most logical step after Havensward. After that I would expect perhaps an expansion around Sharlayan, and on from there (following FFXI's pattern), areas outside of Eorzea.

I share your pain. I would like some actual dresses. Not fancy robes. Not wedding dresses. Just some nice... Dress-y dresses. The offerings so far have been... Meh.

Hi all, If you're anything like me, you love the Wiki, and use it obsessively. As such, I wanted to share a little tip I happened upon recently while exploring the preferences tab on the wiki top menu. I love checking the recent changes log so I can keep up with the happenings of my favourite PCs. However, a lot of us get rather edit-happy when tinkering with our wikis, and we end up flooding the log with our page edits. I don't know if this came with the update to the newer wiki or if it was always there and I'm just a derp who didn't notice it, but I found this nifty solution for us recent changes stalkers. 1. Head to the preferences tab up where you log in to the wiki. 2. Goto the 'recent changes' tab and check the 'Group changes by page in recent changes and watchlist' box. ... And boom! That changes this: To this: Complete with handy drop-down menu showing all the recent changes to that character's page. I hope this was useful. Enjoy!

Yeah, I have. No-one can help how they feel about things, and sometimes the feels sneak up on you. The most important thing is never to let it negatively impact your dealings with other players. It is, after all, a game; the option is there for you to log out and collect yourself if need be. So take some time. As much as you think you need. And when you come back, you can talk to the person who hurt about the incident if you you feel it's important. But you'll be able to do so with a cooler head after taking a little break.
