  1. Not enough of it, SJW need to get on Hyurs (especially Midlanders) for all their cultural appropriation...I WON'T STAND FOR IT.
  2. I think it is the responsibility of the community as a whole as much as we can make it, to decide on further action. It was done once, and it may be harder now, that is true, but it can be done, and it can be helped by those already here. One day in a few years, that may be some our new homes too depending on how all the chips fall, and I would like to have a hand in holding it afloat for that reason alone.
  3. This is also my stance, and I am taking a two-pronged plan to this situation: Firstly, increase and continue visibility for RP community by submitting to the OF and continuous submission of questions for future interviews and live letters, BUT Secondly! Also work together with current community to devise a plan for the immediate future and/or eventuality that this server never opens and no RP server is ever designated, so that future RPers have a reason to play and a sure place to go to begin their character's journey. There is no one answer, and there need not be.
  4. I never said you were saying it's a good thing, nor have I dismissed anyone new or lost. I was rolling my eyes at the tone of your post. If you read my previous post (or anyone else's), and got a 'Fuck you I got mine' impression, it would serve you better to actually quote the people you've got the impression from and constructively respond to their points, and not just make shady comments about how they're coming across to you. It was just an unnecessary thing to say. It's not doomsaying to say that we should figure out a solution now, which is being dismissive of a problem that exists and could potentially get worse over time as we wait to see what happens. A community which has no new growth is a community that is stagnating, and to RP development and survival, that's not a good thing in any circumstance. Asking someone specifically to be called out won't help either, and those people who don't care know who they are and it's probably best they don't keep just adding an uncaring voice to the argument because of how comfortable they are currently. We've had comfort for 5 years, we need something else now. We need to support each other in finding a solution, we cannot trust in them reopening transfers to the server as that could take a year or more. It's already been a possibility for a long time, so I don't think that "temporary" has much weight in this current situation as it was already a long time coming.
  5. I mean, Balmung's RP community is going to remain large and diverse regardless of the anti-transfers. It's not as if they're forcing us off the server. People have been circumventing Balmung's highly congested status through server transfers since forever. It was only a matter of time. Yeah it sucks for new players wanting to roleplay with a large & diverse community, but I'm assuming this decision is being made to put OUR quality of experience to the forefront. And by our I mean we the players already on the server who'd have to deal with the negative effects of server congestion when SB hits. I support our community, but that means also supporting the future of it, and that is what this whole debate is about. Yes, I want things to run smoothly for SB, but I also know a closed server will cause new players to go elsewhere, and over time as RPers leave naturally, no one will come to replace them. This isn't about the cares of a single person, it is about helping the community continue as it has for 5 years, something that many of us have put forth a lot of effort and work to grow into what it is now. The point is, SE should have never let it get this far in the first place, but now that it has, we need to put forth as much effort as we can to help figure out a solution, and if SE recognized us other than a simple tag, that would help a great deal in doing so.
  6. Cheap people should have transferred a long time ago, if you missed your chance because of that, there is no one to blame but yourself and your lack of importance placed on entertainment. Frankly, these restrictions should have been monitored a long time ago, to prevent this all from needing to be fixed, but SE chose money as they always will. Another thing would have been official RP servers for the US, which likely would still have high population, but lowered the other types of players on the server for fear of being infected by the RPers and their lack of gaming ability. The ones missing out are the future RPers who are new, and never had a chance that they missed in the first place, those are the ones to feel sorry for.
  7. Soooo, was reading a couple threads, and noticed some interesting things mentioned. Question: What are you excited for from Stormblood, specifically related to RP. One of the big things I saw mentioned, was unsyncing HW dungeons for further RP possibilities in Ishgard and surrounding areas. Can anyone think of something they are ready for as related to RP?
  8. General rule is, the colors given are natural, and the only time hair is considered to be dyed is when you ICly mention or it is pointed out that your character has changed their hair from what they had originally. As far as suggestions about hair? Play with it a little over time, start with what you like, and as time goes on, have it get longer or get cut, maybe an up style for easy times and down style for elegance, or however you see it. Just don't be afraid to keep the same color and change the style from time to time to show evolution and the change a passage of time brings. Good luck!
  9. A friend of mine uses a far outlying suffix to signal his mother's distaste for him from birth. He has siblings, but of his siblings, his father was the most hated by his mother, and so when she had that man's child, she gave his son an impossibly far out family line marker to symbolize that. Just food for thought~
  10. If you come to RPC and ask this, you will mostly be given the two part replies above. Both parts valid and interesting looks at RP on Balmung and other servers, but also sort of wishful thinking or idealist views. (Do pay attention to that link though, it will help you if you end up wanting to attend events) RPC and Balmung have exactly 1 actual hangout for RP provided by the game, all other hangouts are either run by egomaniacs looking for a sense of how important they are to all of us, or do gather a crowd, but must be monitored at all times to actually make it to the event/location at a time when it is active. Otherwise? Your wide and wonderful option for continuous RP locale is by and far the Quicksand. Limsa has no major hangouts on the regular, sometimes people are in the Drowning Wench, but often have their own people to RP with and aren't looking for walkups. Gridania...has nothing really at all unless you arrange it yourself. Basically for a game/server full of RPers, venturing forth from the QS or a major city at all, or really just from the QS and the Thanalan region in general, is on a scale of pain up to death, of how much that would hurt their fragile sense of creativity. Now, Quicksand is an okay RP hangout. Mostly one goes there to find steady ERP options, but try not to put too much story into the ERP beyond "One of us picked the other one up at a bar, now we bang" or it will go south. If that doesn't float your boat? You can try to make your way through the scrolling chat on busy nights to find the odd character hanging at the bar or at a table and hopefully spark up a conversation that won't either get you killed or have your character run screaming from the bar after listening to delusional drivel not appropriate to setting or character power. All that being said? My suggestion is to not be discouraged by all this, it is fairly common of RP communities, and something everyone must get past at some point. Work on getting a foundational or support group together that can either RP with you on the regular, or point you in the direction and be a base to jump off of to get further RP. It sounds daunting, but can be accomplished by joining linkshells and getting to know regular RPers that are active, find the ones that suit you well as far as character power and what sort of RP you are interested in, and then try to expand out from there. Freecompanies can often be a great point to grow from, and finding one that is solid without crazies is always nice. Be aware that there are always going to be people that are boring and don't agree with your style of RP just on the fact that they "have been playing forever, and know how this works", but I encourage you again to ignore those people, feel confident in your character and your skills as an RPer, and get out there! Good Luck!
  11. Along the lines of what Warren is suggesting, I would venture a bit of magitech that is somewhat closer to an instrument? Something they could wear on their body (maybe around their neck), that is long shaped with strings, which when strummed or stroked with a light aetheric charge, giving off sounds that can be played together to create speech? It would take someone with enough knowledge to create this instrument (there are lots of magitech centered characters around), and then it would take the character learning to play it with a group of people that can provide solid foundational RP to get it rolling and comfortable, but it sounds fun and interesting in my opinion. Good luck!
  12. Huh. I never got the rosy picture vibe from Ul'dah at any point. Quite the opposite. That might be because the idea of "monetarists" being a governing body is really abhorrent to me though. (And yes, I realizing I'm living on the wrong planet for those sentiments, tbh, lol.) Nor have I, but had been a failing opinion of this community at times. Misguided attempts of justice RP taken out of the context of a realistic look at the city into the realm of pompous or narrow view of the complexity of both the lore and the other players in an RP relationship.
  13. This isn't a common thing, the fact that they are actually from the world of FFXIV, and a nameable continent on it, is already leaps and bounds ahead of some new players! Stick to it, merchants are fun, you can deal in black market trading, work for free companies of many different sorts, and garner great connection while having an interesting and lore-abiding reasonable bacground. Good luck!
  14. Not enough of them around to be honest, drug trade is alive and well in Ul'dah, but you can buy anything there ICly really. Seen rare artifacts, slaves, prostitution, drugs, livestock and mounts, you name it, and I've seen it traded. Really makes you think about how Ul'dah must really be deep down, a city founded on greed and the worth of the soul weighed in gold. Paints you a very different picture than this rosy utopian world where Sultansworn and other factions are the ultimate rule of law in the land, and keep peace. A city that rots from the inside out.
  15. You are welcome to use a Recorder, it may be the only case of public death from RP that I would be likely to see, inform me so I can grab my popcorn ICly. Otherwise, here is a link to follow for some examples of what we can actually see: http://en.ff14housing.com/itemlist.php?h=1 Click this and hit the "Musical Instrument" tag to get an idea. Otherwise it would have us assume that bards commonly use a lyre as seen in job animations. Almost any instrument can be created within reason I think. Using Allagan technology, Ishgardian precision, Garlean ingenuity, even turntables wouldn't be out of the question and maybe microphones to a certain extent. This would need careful planning and the right setting however, and probably wouldn't be something for everyday RP unless you commission ICly to craft such a thing with the proper tools and skills.
  16. I agree with the above, that these sorts of "we already met" situations can be rewarding and as complex or simple as you like without taking away from the fun of the characters' interactions. One of the things I really enjoy is, coming up with interesting but logical ways my character could have met another, so that it gives the right relationship and emotional value between the two.
  17. The lore book says that Nunh are leaders in Seeker tribes as a standard in direct contradiction to the original lore post. It also literally reverses Keeper naming conventions. The reversed naming convention is likely because of the Japanese>>English translation, and the Nuhn was probably just a copy mistake. That in no way, invalidates most of the lore in the book. I wouldn't use established facts like these, which are clearly just little mistakes, to discount everything else. 30 is low yes, but Dragoons have great abilities beyond that of many other Knights. And from what we could see, Dragoons weren't always or even majorly, the battlers of Dragons in the Dragonsong War CSs we have. I think that SE is deliberately trying to keep them capped low, so that the WoL as a DRG and Estinien seem more exceptional. Not to mention, with their skill at killing dragons, it is possible, they were only rolled out at moments of great need, or as in the case of Estinien, they have their own orders or do tasks as they deem necessary. I didn't do the DRG quests myself, but suffice it to say, it seems like they weren't all that telling about the actual state of the order.
  18. I don't think it was an error, there are some errors in there of course, because of translation and sheer speed needed to finish, but none of them which glaringly change an entire fact. There are risks to choosing a job like this one, but in the end, if all the Dragoon RPers got together and decided a way in which they would all like to continue with some sort of universal community canon, I don't see anyone arguing to heavily against it. Things to note: ~Dragoon soulstones are from the Sixth Astral Era, this fact being because the founding of Ishgard, and the settling of Elezen in Coerthas took place during this period of time. ~Soulstones, and the instilling of aether and the nuances of the self into crystal, have been around since the Rise of the Allagan Empire, and have never diminished since then even if the methods have been lost and recovered or changed in some way. As has been mentioned, it doesn't say there is a limit to the amount of DRG soulstones, and in the case of the WoL themselves, it was received by someone who was allowed to keep the one they used and pass it on. So 30 doesn't limit much outside of the official office within Ishgard. Sorry to say, but having been a summoner for some time now, and a Paladin before that, Dragoons will simply have to go our way, and take up a wayward soulstone from chance or by self-assumed fate, to then take on the job which they were working towards as a Lancer. It isn't always glamorous, or well accepted by everyone, but it also isn't against lore, just unlikely more than anything. Do what you want, within reason!
  19. Well, I made this thread for reason why I might NOT be able to have Gogon do it just as much reasons why he might. So being a foil helps! It brings up things I might overlook - either consciously or unconsciously - that lean in either direction. And yeah. Sophia's wards had a backdoor in them as part of a plot via sympathizers amongst the Allagan. They were just found out and killed before they could actually use it to wake her up deep behind enemy lines. However, something tripped them - it's implied that it was a clumsy Garlean but even the heroes aren't completely buying that - and released the Demiurges. I just wonder if the Allagan were trancing Sephy or summoning little Seph-Egis before or after his confinement, for example. Or were they just kept held and only really used as training simulations as the Allagan worked towards creating more Dalamunds? Current summoners would have a much more difficult time explaining having Trances/Egis of Sephy and Sophia than any of the others too... considering the only time they were available were Allagan times and the brief window when the WoL beat them up. Few things, ~Alexander outwardly and inwardly affects the flow of aether with its body and core. Y'shtola sort of sees this as the flow of time and space are reversed back and forth while observing Alexander's actions. ~Depending on the timeline you follow with your character, or where you feel comfortable going back to retcon/add, it is possible that your character could have come in contact with Alexander's aether or abilities. ~If during Alexander's past existence, your character came in contact, or was in some way touched with the aetherial charge from Alexander, whether outside or inside of him, I think it would have been possible that your character might have attuned to it, and may not have even known. (as we know with Bahamut's trance, in which the WoL has attuned, but feels no different afterwards, until a moment of great need, causes the trance to take effect) ~If you personal aetherial self or "soul" was tainted or attuned even unknowingly by the residual aether, it is possible, that in the event that Alexander has erased itself, that aetherial change within may not have been altered. Sort of hard to explain, but I believe we have instances of the aetherial self remaining untouched by outside forces at the deepest levels, because of the existence of the self and the consciousness. ~Time and Space magic, are not outside the realm of ability, even in the case of Non-WoL, as I believe that Astrologians are time/space mages even if in the lesser sense? Ultimately, I would either use this attunement as a major part of your character from here on out, and limiting the ability of the trance to clear and concise points which can or cannot be affected to make it more believable. All that being said, I wouldn't personally play this hand, but the more willing to bend the lore, the more willing you would be to go with this idea. I don't think there is anything wrong with it, if made into a big plot point, being well threaded into your character's existence, and largely limiting the use and ability of it.
  20. Some of these replies are real gems. Asking for a note of giving or reason in this community is like yelling into a yawning void hoping for a reply. That isn't a reply you are hearing, it is the echo of your voice bouncing off greedy minds. Sweet a sentiment as it is, this game tends to summon up an all-for-one attitude rather than a one-for-all, so those members who concede to the appeal of avoiding apartments, are likely the ones who just have no use for one because they have so much space beyond the norm at their disposal, rather than a call to fairness. I guess in the end that works just as well, but one is just more humorous to me.
  21. Basically this is another try at telling the game what to do for RP ideas which...just no. Like sure you can want the game to cater to you all you want, but the easier and more obvious thing to do is drop the attitude that says: "The game should cater to me out of all the other people on the servers." and read more like: "If I really want what I want, how can I get it myself?" which is to get rid of one character you don't use often, and open up a slot that you can mess around with all the time. OR, if you want to do this that badly, get everyone together on another server and use all the slots to do things, there are many solutions to this if you are willing to give just a little. Next let's make a thread about changing the job lore to our liking, or altering the course of the story because we didn't agree with the end of Heavensward. We get 8 characters per account on each server, that's quite enough, and if you need more, time to shell out more money!
  22. Try me: 1) vivacious young man with a secret; tradesman by day, rogue by night 2) stoic no-nonsense healer in a love-hate relationship with the Elementals 3) kind-natured orphan, estranged from his twin sister by political differences 4) ""archaeologist"" (tomb robber) with more of a nose for trouble than is strictly profitable 5) peppy huntress who keeps getting distracted from her job by pretty girls 6) sardonic demonic who isn't actually demonic, they just want to seem scary so people won't touch them 7) sad dad with a drinking problem, wants to find his son 8) smart-ass mage with too many puns and not enough years left in the world 9) child abuse survivor who turns to body mods and blowing stuff up as a coping mechanism 10) child soldier who becomes a mercenary with the strictest code of conduct she can still turn a profit on 11) noble's daughter, actually mixed species, who struggles with the decision to continue hiding her family secret - i.e. herself - after they're all killed in a war 12) overly eager apprentice to #2, might actually be a six-year-old girl 13) PTSD-riddled veteran who cannot bring herself to admit the war is over 14) wide-eyed teenager way in over her head with some pretty nasty magic This was the size of my roster of WoW alts... sans a handful of characters who were pretty WoW-specific. All of them had fully fleshed-out backstories and all of the ones listed would be completely portable to XIV if I had the room. Only 1 through 8 made it. Some of them have threads in common, but I think if you picked any 8+ characters, no matter who was writing them, that would be the case. By that logic, it's not worth there being more than a few character slots on the server full stop, right? Because some of them would be similar to each other? I wanna be able to make my own bad decisions, okay?? I more meant in the nuance of actual word play rather than character backgrounds and motivations. Because lots of characters can be different from one another, but writing styles don't change, and the amount of dialogue and action in an RP setting causes dissimilar character reactions to that of a narrative written by only one person. Not to say you can't, just to say that most couldn't and most don't have the time to fully develope that many characters much less give them the time needed in a game where alts are gimped automatically by MSQ completion. Mind you if I quit my job, or severely limited my hours, maybe I could use those slots, but 16 fully developed and useable characters is a stretch. (Unless a majority of them wore lower level armor, and or rarely ventured away from the main city, and maybe acted as side characters)
  23. I have 16 slots on Balmung, and I can tell you, even at my most active, unless you do not care about game content AT ALL, you can't get anything done. Your alts would suffer, and they wouldn't have a wide variety of armors they can't get or places they can't go for long starting periods, nobody wants to friend or invite you that many times when that could take up room on their limited lists, and to be honest, good luck playing that many characters and not having at least some of them seem similar. There is no need to uncap the limit, and even if there is, almost every other thing they haven't fixed or need to figure out a smarter way to do, should come before it~~~ just sayin'
  24. That's not strictly true, there are many people who frequent this site who have multiple properties to their name, and/or are the leader of an FC as well. RPers are capable of just as much bad will for others as anyone else. It's a minion eat minion world out there, and most will site: "It's just a game." "Anyone else would do the same if they had the chance." ...sure.
  25. As noted in the lore thread just below this one, so far we know that Midlander, Highlander, Lalafell, and Au Ra, do or have called themselves Doman. Looking at the third race there, the Lalafell, one could probably assume that any major hub city, particularly a port city, has been inhabited by most or all races. How deep seated they are in the culture, I am not sure, and can't be until we either go there, or get more information, I would say that there are citizens of Doma who are Miqo'te, and that they have been there for long enough to call themselves part of the City-State. Now, I think you said outside of Doma in the mountains? As if they had traveled over land bridges to get to Othard as a clan? I think that would be a little harder to justify. There would be little to no reason for even a nomadic tribe to travel that far to settle without the use of the sea routes, which have been around for some time now. If it were the case that a nomadic tribe needed to move, that is a far distance, and even Auri tribes who are nomadic by nature don't seem to have moved that far out of their way. (This is not to say, that it has never happened, just that it would be harder to assume!) My suggestion? Move a small band by sea or by landbridge, and not a full tribe, or multiple tribes. Or, have them taking sea routes to Doma, only to find it inhospitable for whatever reason, possibly because they felt the encroaching threat of the Garleans even before the empire razed the city, and left to avoid it after having settled in the city. These two seem more likely, but also shorten your group's time in the mountains, and so would make it harder to call them a mountain dwelling tribe by way nomadism and then tradition, but rather a mountain dwelling tribe out of necessity. Hope this doesn't crush all your dreams, and helps you find a good backstory instead! Good luck!
