I normally don't critique other peoples' styles, but you've specifically asked for feedback, so I might as well offer some that I feel is important: I personally disagree with the use of "third-person perspective" in real-time RP. I can see where you're coming from by thinking about it from a "novel-writing" POV, which I think works great for short stories or other out-of-game RP, but what happens when you do it in real-time is that you're constantly beaming your character's innermost thoughts into other peoples' heads as you're interacting with them. While most experienced RPers are typically able to ignore that sort of stuff when it happens, it can be immersion-breaking and somewhat frustrating to be continuously bombarded by it and having to keep ignoring it. It also slows down the pace of the RP by having lots of stuff get written out that is essentially irrelevant as it pertains to the interaction that's actively happening. It can be interesting from an OOC perspective to learn more about your character, but generally when I want to do that, it's outside of the game (or in an OOC channel), and not while I'm actively trying to interact with someone. I don't want to tell you that your style is "wrong" or that you're bad for doing it, but in my experience most of the FFXIV RP community doesn't typically do that sort of thing, so you may experience some pushback about it. I figured it'd be better to do it in a forum setting rather than having someone else bring it up in the game itself.

I'm a 1.0 CE owner and Legacy status player. I've also pre-ordered the ARR CE, and I own multiple security tokens. I must, in good conscience, recommend that the community shoot me into the sun. There is no other way.

If you already have a 1.0 PC version code registered on your account, you CANNOT register a 2.0 PC version code on that same account. Instead, you can either register your 2.0 code to a new account, or exchange your ARR CE pre-order for a PS3 CE pre-order, which you CAN attach to the same account (and would allow you to play on both platforms, though not at the same time). However, since you already own the 1.0 CE, that account will get the ARR CE digital items for free. So, registering the ARR CE code actually doesn't do much for you (aside from getting 30 more days of free gametime, I guess). It's really, really confusing, unfortunately, but I'm in the same situation as you. I'm just getting the ARR CE for the physical goods, and may end up just keeping the key in the box in the end. SE has a long-running thread about it on the beta forums here that's clear as mud: http://forum.square-enix.com/ARR-Test/threads/34392-FINAL-FANTASY-XIV-A-Realm-Reborn-Purchase-Questions

1.0 characters cannot transfer to new ("non-legacy") servers, at least not until at least a few months after launch.

1. Character creation restrictions were eased on legacy worlds as of the start of this testing period: http://na.beta.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/news/detail/991bbcb4842c7af69f82326302a74eba2a57a68e 2. Most of us seem to be on Gilgamesh for phase 3, but everyone will switch to their "real" servers (Balmung or the TBD non-legacy server, which will be voted on soon) at the start of phase 4, which is when data will start carrying over to release unless something goes wrong. To research linkshells, check out the Linkshell Hall forum. :cactuar:

I'd imagine that just like the real world, this sort of thing covers a wide spectrum. Even in the face of globalization and the Internet, there are many culturally conservative/traditional families in (often less-industrialized) parts of the world that value tradition and culture very highly, where there are many others who do not. The frequency at which you'd find these culturally-conservative groups would conceivably vary based on geographic location, isolation, ease of access to foreign culture/technology, etc. The same could easily be true in Eorzea as well; I could definitely see there being some very remote pockets of civilization that don't often come into contact with the city-states, and therefore have retained a strong cultural identity. I wouldn't imagine that it's extremely common, but I don't think it's out of the question for a character to have that sort of backstory. A character who's spent most of their life among other races would likely exhibit far less of their "traditional" cultural identity, though, sure; doubly so for characters whose family's cultural assimilation dates back a generation or more. tl;dr: I don't think there's anything wrong with a character that exhibits traits representative of their "traditional" culture, nor do I think there's anything wrong with a character who doesn't. As long as the backstory is believable, it doesn't make a difference to me.

I don't know if it's possible to create new characters on legacy servers (including Balmung) in the beta right now. During beta phase 3 (i.e. right now), most of the RP community is on Gilgamesh, but we'll be on Balmung (plus one non-Legacy server that will be voted on in a few days) when phase 4 starts and the game starts "for real."

A comprehensive look at the Seventh Umbral Era story arc [1.0]
Adelpha replied to Merri's topic in Lore Discussion
There whereabouts of Bahamut is something that's supposed to be key to the ARR main storyline, so I'm sure we'll learn about this once we're able to progress further in the story. The dev team has been keeping their cards close to their chest on that topic. -
If you're planning to play your 1.0 character and they are still on Balmung (or Besaid), you don't need to do anything. If you're planning to roll a new character, you don't need to do anything, because I believe SE is planning to leave additional headroom for new players on all of the legacy servers (but it'd still probably be smart to get your character created ASAP once phase 4 starts to reserve your spot). If you have a 1.0 character that you're planning on playing but it is not on Balmung (or Besaid) then you need to submit a transfer application if you'd like to play that character on Balmung.

Almost 30. I'm actually really surprised to see so many 30+ people here. I wasn't expecting that, especially with seemingly so many ICly-teenaged characters running around. Maybe that's just all I've noticed, though

I'm a guy IRL, and I play either/or depending on the game and how the models look/animate. Whether armor looks dumb on them, whether they're too big or too small, whether their animations are fluid, etc. I'm RPing a female character right now because it actually feels easier to me than the opposite. I don't want to feel like I "am" the character, I want to be able to think rationally about the character's personality from a distance and use that to calculate how she'd be most likely to react to any given situation, which probably says a lot about the way I approach RP. I don't believe there's any way that you can say "here's how a man would react to this situation, and here's how a woman would react instead." Doubly so when the world/culture/species you may be RPing in is not at all similar to whatever you may be familiar with in real life.

I received the "1.0" cutscene for my old character, and she never completed To Kill a Raven. She had completed everything up until that point, though.
-
For RP purposes, it's important for 1.0 characters that didn't ICly get time-warped, mainly.
-
Aside from the stuff already mentioned, many NPCs from each region will make frequent references to their city-state's local patron diety in their speech (Llymlaen for Limsa, Nald'thal for Ul'dah, and Nophica for Gridania), and they range from simple cultural touchstones to curses ("Nophica's teats!"). Those might qualify as "region-specific sayings."

I don't intend to dissuade you, but you should at least be aware before proceeding with such a character concept that other characters (my own included) may think that your character is clinically insane if he keeps going around and telling everyone else about how he's from another world. That in itself could lead to interesting RP situations, of course, so if you're cool with that, then go for it.

With level sync, falling behind your friends is thankfully a bit less of an issue now, at least as it pertains to FATES, guildhests, dungeons, etc..

My character stayed behind. Personally, I've viewed it as a good opportunity to evolve certain aspects of her personality, since a lot has happened in those five extra years. The ensuing RP where she'll finally meet back up with her old associates (who are essentially unchanged from when they entered the time rift) will be interesting, to be sure. ARR takes place five years after the climactic battle, right around the same time that most of the warped characters will emerge from the rift.

My immersions! (In mythology, it has 8 legs, whereas in a lot of FF games, I think it usually has 6. Regardless, I hope nobody seriously wants to complain about such a thing.)

I "age" my character, for as much as that actually means in terms of real tangible change to the way that I play her. Unless I'm playing the game for 10 more years, the effects of age on her physical capabilities will be negligible. What that really means, then, is that her personality evolves a bit as she becomes older, though that sort of development can just as easily be chalked up to her life experiences rather than just the physical process of aging. I personally don't have any interest in playing a static character who never ages (either physically or in terms of emotional maturity), but I'm certainly not everyone.

Name: Adelpha Sarantas Age: 28 Race/Clan/Gender: Hyur female, mixed Midlander/Highlander Skin: Light brown. Build: Resembles a Highlander, but a bit slighter of frame and not as muscular. Height: 5 fulms, 9 ilms. Hair: Pale blonde, slightly more than shoulder-length. Known to change her hairstyle for different situations. Eyes: Dark blue. Demeanor: Usually good-natured but fairly subdued. Around strangers she's pretty reserved, but she will often let out smirks at things that amuse her. When she's in a good mood around people she knows well, she comes out of her shell a little bit and can often be found grinning and sharing a good laugh. When something demands her full attention, she's all-business and has little patience for immaturity. Clothing: Dresses somewhat modestly. Almost never dresses in an overly revealing way, except for very formal occasions or other appropriate situations (beachwear, etc). Likes to look fashionable when possible, but utility takes priority if she ever has to decide between the two. Profession: Maelstrom officer. When not undertaking Maelstrom duties, she presently finds work as an adventurer. Her main combat specialty is protective magic. Reference Screenshots:

That's a pretty big list, but hey! I'll add my name to the end. As far as expression, either something neutral/thoughtful or a gentle smile would be good. She's never been much of one to show huge amounts of emotion in public EDIT: Reference post is up!
