  1. All said (and I agree about half-breeds being dangerous to RP because they do set off snowflake alarms) you picked a comparatively good time to RP a half-breed with Koji-Fox's recent comments on the topic: http://gamerescape.com/2014/10/22/fan-fest-2014-interview-with-michael-christopher-koji-fox/ That said, K-F makes it very clear how and why half-race children are so rare. I would still proceed very carefully before you incorporate it in to your concept. You seem very set on the idea, however. My advice would be that you make a hyur character with the same back story--just remove the bit about his mother being a miqo'te and you create room for yourself to add in her race at a later time. Then, when 2.5 hits, we can see just how racially diverse Ishgard is. If there are a fair amount of miqo'te, use a Fantasia on him and let everyone know you are ret-conning his appearance. Honestly, with its proximity to the Black Shroud I can see there being perhaps a very small Keeper of the Moon population. In all honesty, it sounds like your character would make a better hyur than miqo'te—anyone who is raised in the lower classes in Ishgard has a hard enough time as it is, and I have a feeling that someone who wasn't hyuran or elezen would go through experiences that would make them... Less than patriotic. Probably not too keen on Halone. If you go forward with your concept, I think you will find some who don't mind your backstory, but to many it will be far too sensationalistic and lore-wobbly for them to take you as a serious RPer. We all want to play someone interesting--but creating a backstory that sets your character up as a uniquely interesting person from the get-go is, frankly, the easy way out. It doesn't show much creativity. The best characters I have ever RP'd with are those with simple, plausible backgrounds who make their characters interesting through what they do in the present moment—not just on paper. Welcome back to the community and good luck! You should post your wiki Library page here for feedback when you get a first draft together.
  2. Oh, awesome--I didn't think there were many other PS4 players around! I was using a USB keyboard last night and for some reason (weird server latency?) my typing kept freezing up. Do you ever have this problem on PS4? Maybe my keyboard is just terrible. I have enjoyed the circle strafing and lock-on feature a lot—the controller layout feels great. I have been having the back pedaling issue avoiding screwdrivers, bomb tosses, etc. I should just tap L3 to unlock and run freely when an ability gets initiated, instead, right? Also, (one last thing (⌒-⌒; ))--is there a default keyboard setting for hiding the UI when you plug it in...? Or do I have to be in mouse/keyboard mode? I have found so many great spots for screenshots but haven't figured out if I need to switch to a mouse to unlock the keybind pane. ><
  3. I think role playing an Ascian v. role playing a foreigner (Ishgardian, Doman, Garlean, Sharlyan...an) isn't comparable at all from a storyline standpoint. We see multiple heroes from Sharlayan, Ishgardians and an ex-Garlean in the main storyline, and plenty of Ishgardians and Domans within the context of job quest lines. They seem firmly planted in the realm of plausibility as player characters because you are time after time put on equal footing with them as an ally. The Ascians, however, appear as basically a plot device. They're not grounded in the world as relatable, portrayable characters. To me, they're so rare and so powerful they basically would basically become props in RP. The only application of playing an Ascian that I can see would be as a cameo plot device character to initiate or impact a storyline. However, even this is lore-breaking from my perspective: there are so few Ascians in the world that writing in your own would be, in and of itself, disturbing the nature and power balance of the world SE has created. TLDR; Ascian RP would basically be insta-God Mode.
  4. [update] 21.01.2015 I received pearls for the linkshells The Tavern and Friends of Momodi tonight while learning the ins and outs of the rather wonky PS4 controls. Thank you to Orrin and Micah for the pearls and to Aya, Nako'li, Kurt/Keil, Emerald, Bear and V'aania who sent me the initial /tell about Friends of Momodi and gave me tons of newbie-appropriate advice (I don't know your forum name! T^T) Really enjoyed meeting so many of you OOCly in-game this evening. Looking forward very much to getting my RP on--probably with an Ul'dahn alt for the moment while I level Kamome a bit and get her in a decently character-appropriate outfit. Tomorrow I'll be in Ul'dah on Yvane Ashdale (by far my most outgoing characrer concept right now) for a peek at what Quicksand RP looks like. If anyone has a character who is ICly in the Immortal Flames and 30+ years old, let me know if you want to have a bar fight date with my Ul'dahn character (don't worry, she's a horrible fighter.) Basically her deal is that her old man was a Flame Commander who completely botched a raid into Amalj'aa territory and every one of his men killed, including himself. Yvane is broke after paying for his burial and funeral rites and etc. to the Priesthood of Thal, and is now a struggling merc with a huge chip on her shoulder. She's also been ICly rejected multiple times by both the Brass Blades and the Immortal Flames, if anyone wants to take that angle. Thanks again to everyone! All of you made me feel so comfortable and the LS's are great fun.
  5. Hey there! I am new to Balmung and this will be my first night on the server. I'll be online in twenty minutes or so and will check in-game for you then! Thank you for creating this LS! I love this forum's community. :3
  6. I certainly will! I must admit I have admired how your character Faye pulls off that female Midlander hairstyle ever since I started reading this forum. I love how it looks but I can never get it to look quite right on a character and you did it perfectly with the silver color. ♡(.◜ω◝.)♡
  7. Excellent. I'm guessing that would be sometime in late 1577, if my sense of the timeline is correct. Thank you for all of your help, Chris. Good luck with yours and Motoko's storyline!
  8. I'm new to Balmung as of today! I can't wait to meet you all in-game! ^^
  9. Name: Valenne Hauteclaire Clan: Wildwood Gender: Female Name: Amelain Tomberoux Clan: Duskwight Gender: Male Main: Kamome Greywing Timezone: PST Server: Balmung Looking For: /say RP, questing RP, Free Company, RP discussion Linkshell, friends Player Info: I roleplay a Midlander Hyur as my main but am leveling Amelain and Valenne as my alts. I loved the Elvaan so much in FFXI and am looking forward to RPing as the Elezen in FFXIV! Especially now with Ishgard on the horizon. There is a good chance one of them may become my main. I have a history of my alts overshadowing my main characters' RP. 2. Does your character fit the 'common' lore of the Elezen or are they singular? Amelain adheres to accepted Duskwight lore, and lives a nomadic life as a wandering alchemist, healer and hermit. However, he is not particularly fond of other Duskwight Eleven and purposely holds himself to a standard of cooperation and empathy for the other races. Valenne is of an Ishgardian origin, but racially she is a Wildwood Eleven, as most Ishgardians are. Her family fled Ishgard to escape religious persecution and has resided in Gridania for the past decade. She doesn't make her original nationality a common topic of conversation. 3. What are your RP limits, if any? No ERP. Permadeath and romance are both fine with me with mutual consent and in the context of a good storyline. I really dislike meta-RPing and lore-breaking. I'm new to Balmung as of today! I can't wait to meet you all in-game! ^^
  10. I. Basic Info Characters: Kamome Hama, X’himei Rihll, Naya Tayuun, Ai Edakumi, Ujin Qalli Primary Character: Kamome Hama Free Company: Teatime «Tea» Servers: Balmung (2015-2020) & Mateus (2017-2020) II. RP Style Amount of RP I'm enthusaistic about IC interactions all of the time in /say. I love to feel like part of the game’s living world and be the flavor for other players running by, even striking up conversations with NPCs for fun. I would consider myself a full-time RPer, always creating my characters with a strong concept in mind so that I’m always ready to respond to a walk-up. I love collaborative storytelling and long form plots! I also love tabletop style events. Views on RP Combat and Injuries I like both RP combat and injuries. I'm even pro-permadeath, but would never suggest it to someone unless I was writing a plot with them. I am very open to the idea of permadeath for my characters—raises the stakes! If dueling is an option, I prefer roll-based combat and prefer to leave purely emote-based combat for portraying scuffles, slaps, stabs and so forth rather than full-blown battles. Views on IC Romance I support IC romance within the context of an interesting plot. I feel romance should evolve realistically as part of a character's story. I choose not to participate in erotic RP. Views on Non-Romantic RP I am a highly collaborative, character-driven storyteller. I love writing origin stories and character arcs with both my RL and online friends. If you want to write a plot together, or create family or childhood ties to my characters, send me a PM any time! I'd love to plot with you. It’s the best part of online roleplaying for me! Views on Lore I strictly abide by established lore and love researching it. I will never tease you or refuse to RP with you if you make lore mistakes, but if your RP style blatantly ignores in-game lore I will probably send you a /tell and ask politely if we can stick to lore topics. It's nothing personal, I just hate wildly breaking lore in my RP. That said, no one is perfect and I make tons of lore mistakes, myself. I am supportive of lore-based hypotheses and inferences as long as they are tastefully retconned if the official lore on the topic is released and conflicts. Views on Chat Functions /say all the way! I love open-world RP more than anything. /say tavern RP, /say story RP, /say adventure RP—you name it. I'm there. I frown on most /group RP, unless absolutely necessary. I feel quality RP should be freely viewed by the larger community and make itself available for more shy bystanders to jump in! Sticking to public channels also helps feel various parts of the environment feel more alive due to the necessity of spreading out. /tell RP is okay, as long as it's used as an actual IC whisper. Spontaneous /say is best! III. Other Info Country: United States Timezone: Pacific Standard Time
  11. Hi! Thank you for having this LS for everyone! I would like to get on the waiting list for a pearl--I will be online as Kamome Greywing.
  12. One last question for this thread (I hope)... Is there an approximate in-game date for the rebellion in Doma? Would it have been with the release of Patch 2.4, or some time earlier? Nitpicky and somewhat silly question, but I am trying to get my timeline for Kamome right in my head. Thank you guys for everything. I got into Balmung tonight, at long last. ^^
  13. Yay! Thank you!! I made it on after three weeks in a row of trying! Tears of joyyyyyy!!! T^T
  14. I wanted to post a couple of helpful materials I came across while performing research for a Doman character concept and writing their RPC Library entry. First, a really awesome list of Japanese bird names and their corresponding kanji expressions. There is a nice variety here if you are hoping to imitate the naming convention we see with the NPC characters Karasu [Crow] Redbeak and Tsubame [Swallow] Sunrise. http://www.sibagu.com/notes/kanji.html http://www.sibagu.com/notes/kanjia.html Second, a quotation from the Ninja quest NPC, Oboro Moonrise, about the worship (or rather, non-worship) of The Twelve in Doma: “My people do not worship your deities twelve. Our gods are all around us─in the trees, in the soil, in the crashing waters before you. Close your eyes and open your heart to the sound of the rushing falls, that you might purge your mind of all worldly thoughts and distractions.” It was very sad to see the nay-saying and assumptions in this thread! Playing a character from Doma, Sharlayan, Garlemald or elsewhere aligns very well with the in-game character lore. Many NPCs describe the player character as a non-Eorzean. There is no need for every character to be a comprehensive expert on their homeland, and I can imagine many character types who would be nomadic or unaffiliated with a particular country, despite their origin. Good luck to everyone with their future character writing. Hopefully further expansions and patches will give us deeper knowledge of the Near and Far East! Aht Urghan was, by far, my favorite expansion in FFXI and I miss the Near Eastern aesthetic and gear design (*swoon* Blue Mage) very, very much.
  15. I have never been so excited to have to wake up at 3:00am.
  16. Haha, I think it's okay. You two seem pretty aware of the parts you've borrowed and open about it. FF itself is full of wholesale lifting from not only previous entries in the series, but all kinds of history, mythology, etc. Hope to see you guys around on Balmung!
  17. Ninja Quest Transcripts on XIVDB XIVDB has this for a few of the quests in game. Be sure to click the Dialogue tab and then just go on to the subsequent quest for the next set of dialogue. Um, feel like shouldn't need to be said, but spoiler. ^^ Youtube also works! Whoa, awesome! I've been eating up the quest blurbs on Gamerescape, but this is one step up. Thanks! I'd rather read the quest text than watch the cutscene. Feels... slightly less spoilery. Thank you again!!!
  18. I read both profiles and I thought while reading that you two did a great job telling a story while keeping the specifics open to change. That's what I'm trying to do right now, too, with the Doman character I am finishing up for the (hopeful!!) opening of the Balmung gates tonight. I especially like how you and Motoko wove in the Ninja storyline with your character histories. Do you know if there is somewhere online to find the Ninja quest transcripts? I'll check YouTube for the cut scenes, maybe... I think you two incorporated the kind of general feudal Japanese historical setting that Square used for the Far East in FFXI. I can't wait for Samurai to be in the game!
  19. Agreed on the continuity part - The continuity is unreal as to how good it is... IF you're playing an Eorzean native. Yep, after a few days of writing and mulling things over I decided not completely scrap my original Ul'dahn merchant concept—after writing a backstory for a Doman character I realized that it might be safer to have two primary RP characters in case the Doman has to go through lore retcon therapy at some point. That said, it has been really fun to find the clues SE has left us in regard to Doma. I can't wait to see what we will learn about Ishgard and Dravania in Heavensward!
  20. Something I've found that is useful for Garlean names is grabbing a Latin-English-Latin dictionary and just looking for appealing words. Prominent Ancient Romans didn't have a huge variety of given or family names (just check out any list of Ancient Roman rulers and you'll see what I mean...) So, for Garlean names, I like to just find a cool word that fits with the gender rules we see for forenames (At this point, -ia for women and -o, -ius, -ael and -us for dudes) and use it as the basis of the name. The surnames really don't seem to have gender rules right now. Just go with a word that looks interesting or character-fitting. 'Baelsar' is an example of one that just looks vaguely Latin because of the 'ae' but was just made up to look cool. Arvina, Livia, Nero, Solus, etc. are all actual Latin words—'fat', 'olive', 'black' and 'alone', respectively. Try booting up a dictionary site and just find something that looks cool. Preferably with lots of 'ae' vowel sounds in it for the surname. Here is a huge list of Latin nouns on Wiktionary: http://en.wiktionary.org/w/index.php?title=Category:Latin_nouns&pagefrom=AMITA+MAXIMA%0Aamita+maxima#mw-pages Might want to just stick to a dictionary for easier browsing: http://ablemedia.com/ctcweb/showcase/wordsonline.html Good luck with your Garlean!
  21. Also, if anyone out there is interested/new as well/wanting to RP someone Doman/willing to lore-check for us, an RL buddy of mine and I are putting together a simple origin plotline to get started with involving a trafficker/smuggler from Doma and an Ala Mihgan Garlean defector. Otherwise it will just be posted at some point in the Welcome forum once I actually make it to Balmung on Monday. Damn you, Balmung!! I'm really looking forward to RPing and maybe someday partying up and doing content with all of you! Have an entertaining weekend! This board is great.
  22. In the past (with FFXIV, at least...) I feel like S-E did a pretty good job with lore continuity, so I like to stay in-line with their world building stuff. Blizzard, on the other hand... I always felt like the only way I could ever possibly RP in WoW was by making up my character as I went. Much more fast-and-loose style, there. Also, Chris--thanks for the names! And Sounsyy, you're awesome. You made a typo because you were so quick to be helpful. Thank you so much for helping a noob figure out the (surprisingly intense) geographical details of this game. I hope everything turns out well for you and your project after the laptop theft. Same thing happened to me in 2012... Just saved enough extra money up to replace it this past November of 2014.
