1. A good way to get answers is to find a home with helpful people,as well. The fourth and fifth links on the top menu there will take you to the free companies (guilds) and linkshell (extra chats ) pages. You can sort them by server for easier searching. (I'd link them myself, but on my phone and it doesn't play well with this site unfortunately. ) Might be a good way to get your feet wet, so to speak, by joining one that sounds like the type of RP you'd like to get involved in. Either way, welcome back to the addiction!
2. Welcome to the game! I don't recall seeing too many people pop up from Marlboro with regards to RP, but there may be some there! Currently, the biggest unofficial hubs are Balmung (which is currently completely locked), Mateus (for NA), and Omega (for EU). Gilgamesh was a fairly big RP hub for a long time, though I'm not sure if the RP is around all that much anymore, there. Either way, welcome! And best of luck finding some RP!
3. Welcome back to the addiction! As you mentioned there is a free company/linkshell hall to peruse through. The links are the fourth and fifth button on the top menu. Hopefully you find one to suit your needs and keep you hooked this time.
4. Regarding tribe placement: To my knowledge, there hasn't been any lore presented to us in game or elsewhere regarding where any tribes are settled (or why they settled there). The two tribes that we interact with in their settlements are the U (Drake) and M (Marmot) tribes. It has always been my headcanon that the tribes settle where ever their particular "totem animal" is abundant. So... for the U tribe, they'd settle near drakes... which, if you look around the desert near enough to them you can find some wild drakes. The M tribe would settle near marmots... which I don't recall seeing any in the Fringes where you run into the tribe, but it makes sense to me that marmots are creatures that are pretty plentiful anywhere. Again, just headcanon so do with it as you will. Regarding your personal headcanon for your tribe: Again, nothing much is stated about tribal traditions and the like for the tribes, as far as I can recall. As such, your headcanon for your tribe seems like it would be fine to me. It's very unique and interesting. The only issue you may run into is if you end up interacting with another player from the Y tribe that claims La Noscea as their tribal home... that has a completely different idea of how tribal life would've been. Of course, this is a risk with any headcanon, but you get the idea. Overall, however, go on with your bad self. Regarding white mage/magic: As you likely already know, right now the only ones allowed to practice white magic are the padjal who were entrusted by the elementals. And of course special snowflake WoL. As I recall, Koji did mention "other means" to learn white magic, but said they were "nefarious" in nature. Beyond that, we weren't given any details. Granted, I've not done the 60-70 job quests so perhaps more is explained in there....? Overall, though, what you do with your character is ultimately up to you. I doubt you'll receive the "backlash" you're expecting should you choose the white magic route. There may be pockets that may avoid RP'ing with you simply because they wish to stick to the "only padjal and WoL know it", but that can be true about any sort of RP. It's just a matter of finding that group of roleplayers that think enough like you to allow that sort of RP into their stories. They're out there, you just gotta find 'em. Edit to add: If your only reasoning to wanting to be a WHM is because they're powerful and you worry that the conjurers are weak... you couldn't be farther from the truth. Conjurers are quite powerful by their own rights. Those taught in Gridania tend to stick to the elements that we are given in the game mechanics... however, conjurers are able to conjure spells from the entire elemental wheel. So fire, lightning(thunder), ice, etc. are all within their grasp, as well. They are still very skilled healers and also very strong combatants, even if you just stick with the Gridanian teachings. Again, this isn't me saying don't do your white mage business. Just saying to not let the "upgrade" from the conjurer class to the white mage job fool you into thinking one is inherently weak(er).
5. All gone already. As are any plots from the relocations in the other three housing areas. Oh well... didn't check apartments, though, if anybody is wanting those.
6. I might nab one if any remain by the time I log in, but I won't be upset if there aren't any left. I'm not expecting any to be left by that time, honestly. Maybe an apartment instead...
7. Update: 8/15/17 The company is still here – alive and well! RP is back in full swing now that the large majority of members have pushed through the content available with the expansion and subsequent patches. IC: Another successful moon under our belts. Contracts are getting done in a timely manner and our members are getting paid for their services. It appears there may be an unforeseen connection between some of our contracts that we are now investigating in hopes of finding out the connection and meaning. We are still welcoming more hands to join on with us as we take on more dangerous contracts for more lucrative pay, as well as investigate the unknown corners and cracks of the world to find what mysteries lay beneath. We have a particular need for those skilled in the medical arts, be they aetherical, physical, or both. We could also use a few more people that are skilled in artifact recovery and research. If this sounds like something that may interest you, we ask that you visit your local OIC and inquire more about our company! OOC: Again, we’re still here and enjoying all that this game has to offer! With the majority of our members done with the MSQ, a lot of our focus has returned to RP. Officer-led weekly events are taking place on a regular basis, but we always encourage our non-officer members to lead their own, as well! PvE is still a pretty big thing for us as well! We have a weekly “PvE night” (Saturday) where our company gets together to take on whatever it is everybody wants with regard to PvE. Sometimes that means getting our weekly Omega clear, sometimes that means clearing current EX primals for gear (and hopefully dogs), sometimes it means old primal unsynced mount farms, sometimes that means clearing out the older raids like Binding Coil and Alex… on and on. We decide what it is we do once all of our participating members sign on and vote. We used to do maps on our PvE nights, but that ended up taking away the majority of the time so we’ve separated them out and now do them on their own day. Our map nights now take place every Sunday, and we’ve had some decent luck making the big bucks across the board. Recruitment is still open at this time. Feel free to hop on over to our site and read through our information to get a better idea of who we are and what type of player we’re looking for. If you think you’d be a good fit, feel free to toss up an application on our site and we’ll be sure to contact you! Should you have any questions about our company, please feel free to contact us on our site, in-game, or message me here on the RPC! List of Contacts: C'vhan Tia Linette Syng C'lehna Rhek
8. Per SE's own lore on the naming conventions page: "Males do not take family names, as they are each considered the ‘origins’ of new families. In place of a family name, they are given a title that denotes their tribe, and their position within it. For a male Seeker of the Sun, there are only two positions available—breeding males (nunh – pronounced ‘noon’) and all others (tia – pronounced ‘tea-ah’). All males are born as tia. At any time in their lives, a tia can challenge the tribe nunh to battle. If the tia is victorious, he takes the nunh’s place as tribe breeding male (until he is challenged and defeated), and the nunh becomes a tia once again (if he survives the ordeal). This is done to ensure that the tribe’s offspring are of the finest stock. Depending on its size, a tribe may have multiple nunh (a ratio of one nunh per ten to fifty females is average). There is only one other way a tia can become a nunh, and that is to leave his tribe, and start his own. This, of course, requires several females to accomplish, and most female Seekers of the Sun are rarely impressed by a male who cannot defeat a nunh. Nunh status does not equate to leadership within a tribe, and in fact, very few nunh ever become leaders." So the U and M tribes (that we see, there may be other U and M tribes out there) are supposed to be rare situations. That being said, the next seeker tribe we run into... my money is on the nuhn being leader again..... because SE. Edit: bolded pertinent parts.
9. I'm going to start by saying that I don't think SB is bad, so far... however, I really feel like it's leaps and bounds away from how good it could have been (and maybe still can be salvaged into?). Naturally, I don't know how SE split their resources or time on the project. Maybe they had a Gyr Abania team and an Othard/Hingashi team and those two teams mostly did their own part of the expansion, crossing over only when the MSQ required it. Maybe it was just one team across the whole thing... I dunno. My point here is that I'm not a designer nor do I pretend to be, nor do I consider myself an amazing writer... but SB has felt lacking so far. It really feels like the focus is Ala Mhigo. Which, in and of itself is not an issue, but when the expansion makes it feel like you spend 10 minutes in Gyr Abania, 20 days in Othard/Hingashi, then maybe one more hour back in Gyr Abania... it's hard to agree with that focus. If that makes sense. Everything led back to liberating Ala Mhigo and, in the end, I think that robbed both regions of a much richer story. I'll start out by saying I've never enjoyed the "Asian aesthetic" in MMOs. Was not a giant fan of Pandaria in WoW, Blade and Soul drew no interest from me, and Othard (et. al.) just doesn't really matter to me. That being said, I respect that others DO enjoy such aesthetics and regions and still "force" myself to play through them (I enjoyed parts of Pandaria... and even parts of Othard/Hingashi). However, I feel the split focus robbed fans of "both ends of the aisle" a true, good experience. Take Ishgard/HW for instance. I personally didn't care too much about the "elves of the north". But I feel that with the expansion largely focusing on them and their issues, I came to enjoy and acquire a new found "respect" (for lack of better term coming to mind) for them. I thoroughly enjoyed HW, even though at first I didn't care about Ishgard all that much. With SB, like I said above, the focus always seemed to pull back to Ala Mhigo which, because I once played an Ala Mhigan as my main, I was happy about... but at the same time I was upset, not only for the "true fans", but also for myself not really getting to experience Doma in the "epicness" it should have been. The liberation of Doma really felt like a hand wave to me, and Ala Mhigo honestly wasn't much better. Yeah, sure, there can (and should) be political strife still as people try to settle back in to an "Empire-less" life, but it felt like an extremely hollow victory because there wasn't really any struggle. I feel like 4.x should be Gyr Abania/Ala Mhigo like 3.x was with Ishgard. We fight and fight and fight and at the end (whatever patch that'd be) we just can't quite win it. Make the entire expansion a struggle to liberate Ala Mhigo. Then at the end we do the whole "Hey, maybe we can help Doma so they help us..." which would be the ending MSQ that leads into 5.x which would be solely Doma. Perhaps at the end of that we finally succeed in Doma (and maybe Ala Mhigo), or perhaps make the start of 6.x finally winning in Ala Mhigo and that morale boost being the push we need to finally take the fight to Garlemald. I dunno... tl;dr: The split focus, I feel, robbed people of the truly epic experience the expansion could be. Sure there are still plenty of patches and story to come, but I'm not certain we'll get the same experience out of it had the liberations of both nations been drawn out across the expansion. (Yes, I realize they could make it so that the empire comes back and takes over once more but... that just feels cheap and stupid to me.)
10. That's literally it. You see castform shapes when you present equipment in the various crafting quest lines. And yet you have no way to do a similar thing and show off equipment in your house. Terrible for those RPers who delve into those roles - can't show off your work! This is already confirmed: Oh, awesome! Less terrible art from me then. ... Unless... hm. Thank. god. finally.
11. Doors that match walls other than just the mahogany door. Armor and weapon stands. It's a shame I can barely even manage to draw stick figures, otherwise I'd jump all over this.
12. As a person who has mained tanking classes across all MMOs all the years I've played them, I'd say don't sweat losing aggro in those lower level dungeons, especially if it's your first time ever touching a tank. As Unnamed said, it kind of depends on what tank you were playing for one. In my opinion, GLA/PLD has it the worst in the lower level dungeons until shield oath and rage of halone come along. I'm not saying it's impossible to hold threat, but it certainly can be a challenge, especially to someone new to the whole thing. To my knowledge, they still haven't fixed the bug where flash doesn't start giving the correct amount of threat unless the mob is damaged by the tank first. They've upped the amount of threat it generates, but haven't fixed that bug yet, to my knowledge. MRD/WAR is next in that at least overpower does damage as well as increases enmity. They've lost flash with the release of SB so it can be a bit trickier now, but I still feel like they're a little easier to hold threat with in the lower dungeons. Again, Defiance(tank stance) is a great boon once you get it. DRK is, in my opinion, by far the easiest to hold threat. Unleash is a full circle aoe (like flash) that also does damage (like overpower)while having an enmity multiplier on it. It's fairly spammable, even at a lower level and really makes tanking a snap. Naturally, once you aren't synced and actually have Grit (the tank stance) it's that much easier again. They all suffer from single target threat issues until they get their third part of the combo. Rage of Halone for GLA/PLD, Butcher's Block for MRD/WAR, and Power Slash for DRK. Just keep trying and you'll get the hang of it. Like Unnamed said, head to the hall of the novice if you haven't already... not so much for the training (it's quite lacking for tanks, imo) but for the gear and especially that ring. Once you get your tank stance for whatever class/job you're playing, it'll be much easier. Still not mindless, of course, but leaps and bounds easier.
13. This. Really doesn't have a simpler answer. If you're in public, in public channels, your RP is fair game. Those that lurk and don't make their presence known ICly or OOCly just need to be dealt with when the issue arises. The only part I disagree with (on a personal level) is the use of /p. I, personally, only use that for RP over long ranges (such as combat that takes place in two spots just out of /s and /em range) or if it's requested by whatever group I am RPing with at a large public event ( even then I just try to find a quieter place if possible). Whispers are nice and all, but wholly unnecessary if RPing out in the open. If you want private, undisturbed, specially set up RP that isn't otherwise represented in game take it to private chats, discord, forums, etc. or be prepared to describe the situation (so that they may join) to any passersby that come along.
14. I don't recall any particular text covering this, so not 100 percent sure. However, when looking at the cutscenes, both for intercity airships and the free company ones you send out on missions, they seem to move at a pretty good pace... certainly faster than a chocobo. So, if you wish to go by that, I would say it's far more likely that it's in the hours category rather than days. But I didn't science or math any of it, so not sure. It also depends a bit on how large you consider the world to be ( how much land is between zones) since I'm sure those distances aren't represented accurately either. Even still, I'd say hours... not days.
15. Update: 7/13/17 We’re still here and kicking! Most of our members have pushed through the Stormblood content and are at cap/past the MSQ, so we’re returning a little more of our focus back to the RP side of things once more! IC: Our first moon under the new banner has proven quite successful! Already we’ve completed several contracts and have a new ruin that we are attempting to explore and discover what mysteries it holds! Of course, more hands are always welcome! Particularly those skilled in the medical arts, or those interested in digging around in ancient ruins and discovering possibly ancient knowledge! We need people not afraid to face the dangers locked away in ruins that have been unexplored for ages. We need people that know how to handle rare and brittle artifacts so that we can retrieve them with as little damage as possible. We need people capable of crafting and gathering of all sorts, as we will need supplies and upkeep of our gear during our expeditions. We need people capable of mending wounds, be it through aetherical or physical means. If this sounds like something that may interest you, we ask that you visit your local OIC and inquire more about our company! OOC: As mentioned above, we’re still alive and kicking! We’ve pushed through the content the expansion had to offer and now we’re ready to focus a little more on the RP once more! We’re back to planning our weekly, officer-led events and welcome our members to lead their own as well! That being said, we still very much enjoy slapping pixels about to upgrade our gear together. Raids, extremes, even old content is still very much run by us on a weekly basis during our PvE night! One thing we’re really looking forward to is diving into the new maps with the next patch! With our focus no longer being almost completely drawn away by all of the new content, we are doubling our efforts a bit with regard to recruitment. In so doing, a lot of similar questions have been asked of us that I’ll go ahead and put into a quick FAQ here.
16. And, as I've said before in other discussions on this topic, people seem to forget that tempering is not the only danger with primals. Even in their "lesser forms" they are still beasts in battle. Flinging spells, claws, building sized fists, etc. everywhere. So even if you somehow take tempering (or whatever it would be called for the primal in question) out of the equation, you'll still have a hell of a fight on your hands.
17. Update: 6/11/17 Changes: The key word over the past two weeks! As can easily be seen, our company has undergone quite a few changes! IC: Formerly known as Black Griffin Adventuring Company, this free company has undergone a change of hands and is now known as Iron Raven Expeditions and Excavations. While the company will run in a fairly similar manner as it has in the past, a new focus has been added to the adventuring that was done previous. Iron Raven will now also be delving into ruins and the unknown of Hydaelyn in search of lost knowledge and artifacts! As such expeditions can require the expertise of several different callings, we are looking to hire on people that are skilled in all sorts of areas. OOC: The company has undergone quite a few changes! As mentioned above, we are still doing adventuring-type roleplay, but have also added "excavations" to our list. We'll be delving into ruins for lost knowledge, relics, and artifacts of ages past while still taking on the leves and hunts offered to us by the adventurer's guild and grand companies! With the change of theme, we've also moved our website to a new url! That address is: ironraven.enjin.com Those that have visited our old website when we were Black Griffin may notice a lot of similarities when visiting our new website. The reasoning behind this is that while our IC theme may have changed, our OOC outlook on what we want out of the game (both in terms of RP and PvE) has not. As such, the list I posted a while back about what we're looking for is still relevant. To reiterate: What are we looking for? Active members. We expect our members to participate with the company in at least one company-led RP event or leve each month. We love it if people do more, obviously, but understand schedules and life can be a hassle sometimes. Members that adhere to the lore. We are welcoming to those that are unfamiliar with the lore, so long as they're willing to learn! Adventurer type characters, medical oriented characters, and those characters that love the pursuit of knowledge. Our theme has many openings for all sorts of characters to join on! All around fun people! A good sense of humor and a thick skin are advised! To accompany this change in theme and IC ownership, our doors are once again open! That's right, we're taking on new applicants. So come join us for our new theme and have a home for the upcoming expansion! In terms of PvE, nothing much has changed. We're all looking forward to the upcoming expansion and will be helping each other clear content as we push through all of the new quests and dungeons! To accompany the change to our company, several of the officership pool have switched their mains and, as such, our list of contacts has undergone a little change as well! So, if this sounds like a company you would enjoy and your character would fit, feel free to hop on over to our company site and take a gander. Also feel free to poke any of our officers in game with questions and the like. The list of contacts is now: C'vhan Tia Linette Syng C'lehna Rhek Ketenbhrat Iyrnundsyn
18. A short and sweet post this time around. The officers have come together and decided that, for the time being, we should close recruitment. This will allow all of our members a chance to interact with the upcoming expansion in a more care-free mindset, as well as give us as a company a chance to understand where we stand in the world of Hydaelyn with the upcoming (hopefully) flood of lore. As such, as of right now, recruitment for our company is closed. For any of you out there still curious about us and possibly wishing to join, do still feel free to visit our site or give us a poke in-game or on here for more information. If you like what you see and are willing to wait for us to open recruitment once more (it will happen, eventually), you are welcome to submit an application that we'll get to once our doors are open again. Thank you and enjoy the upcoming fun that will be Stormblood!:moogle:
19. Those jump potion prices are a bit steep for me. I understand their desire to "recoup the losses" of people not playing their game, but damn. The only way I can convince myself to do that is for a fresh character below lvl 10 or something... $50 gone for one character in SB with one class. Blegh. Lots of other good stuff, though! Excited for that stuff!
20. Interesting, I always considered it that much myself just because stretching as far away from the WoL seems to be a good route overall. I would like to know more examples how you mean about adding in your own mobs. Like pretending there's a creature in a specific location and executing battle RP through description? Precisely this, actually. Going back to the "Sohm Al" example I mentioned, the DM running our event wanted to have a fight against a dragon that was a little more "epic". So, we cleared the area of actual in game pve mobs, then the DM set up the glowing waypoints and explained the situation. We then rolled initiative, and RP'ed out the combat as opposed to just pressing buttons on our keyboard to go through our rotations. Which, to clarify, is what we USUALLY do when engaging the mobs placed in the dungeon. We generally don't emote out "Bob swings his sword diagonally at the crawler" for every single encounter in the dungeon. As said above, we might comment on what the pull looks like, do a bit of PvE and just kill the pull, then have a little follow up RP. Of course, this can be expanded as well to add fights against creatures that are generally not in the dungeon per SE's decisions. For example, going back to Sohm Al once more, there aren't really any giant demon voidsent... so perhaps your group has gone there to investigate a disturbance in the aether, stumble into one of the chambers to find naughty mages playing with void magic, and out pops the demon from a portal or some such. None of that is actually in the actual Sohm Al dungeon, so you could use the waypoints to mark where the mages are, the portal, the demon, etc. then RP out the combat however your group normally does (rolls, free form, whatever).
21. Certainly not the only way to do it, but my company generally uses dungeons as settings, rather than their named places. For instance, if we run Sastasha ICly, we either consider it just another path in Sastasha that the WoL didn't take, or just generic pirate cave #67346. And that's generally what we focus on: the setting. As wonderful and beautiful as the open world is, sometimes for that particular scene/event, a dungeon has a better layout and look about it. As for the mobs and such, we might sometimes comment on them ICly, "Gods that us a big goobbue!" or some such, then do a generic "All fingers and toes accounted for?" after the battle. Bosses, especially named ones, if we acknowledge them at all, we do that same thing with them as with the dungeon as a whole... that's not Nidhogg's baby mama... that's just generic angry dragon #72663. Sometimes, if needed or desired, we'll actually "add in" our own mobs using party markers. Place down a, b and c (and soon to be d) and describe what the enemies are... sometimes using rolls for combat, sometimes free form. The biggest thing to remember, I feel, is that there isn't a single "right way" to do it. Do what works for you and yours for the scene/event you're trying to set and roll with it. Also keep in mind... you don't have to beat the dungeon. My company and I did some stuff in "Sohm Al" a week or so back and we barely got past the first boss with all the rp we were doing before the dungeon kicked us out.
22. Another month gone and more RP in the books. Not much to add, honestly, that is any different from last month, however here we go. IC: Our company story line is in full swing and is really starting to heat up! Our members can expect more action in the coming weeks as the plot continues to thicken! Beyond that, we are still holding our “normal, non-overarching” events weekly, as well. Most are adventure-themed in some way, though we do like to throw in a few social/laid back RP events from time to time. We actually have a fishing contest coming up this weekend! To cover the gaps in between events, our leve and hunt system continues to be in place and is working great! OOC: We continue to run content together, continually gearing each other up for release of Stormblood. Weekly Mhach raid trio clears as well as any other content that people would like or need throughout the week. We also hold weekly map/aquapolis runs to help make each other rich! We’ve had a few members join up with us this past month and they are pretty good fits overall. Our recruitment is still open and we’re looking for more people to join in on the madness! What are we looking for? Active members. We expect our members to participate with the company in at least one adventure-themed RP event or leve each month. We love it if people do more, obviously, but understand schedules and life can be a hassle sometimes. Members that adhere to the lore. We are welcoming to those that are unfamiliar with the lore, so long as they're willing to learn! Adventurer type characters. We are, after all, an adventuring company! All around fun people! A good sense of humor and a thick skin are advised! If this sounds like you, feel free to hop on over to our company site and take a gander. Also feel free to poke any of our officers in game with questions and the like. People to contact would be: Roderick Blackstone Eerika Blackstone Ayane Lenneth Ketenbhrat Iyrnundsyn
23. But... but... Ultros was in it! That makes it all better!
