Do you like to go with or against the stereotypes?
Kismet replied to JFrombaugh's topic in RP Discussion
I suppose I'd say I use a mix of going with and against stereotypes to create something that feels unique, yet is also rooted somewhat in what people may expect -- both in and out of universe. However... I'm not sure how much weight that holds when it comes to certain jobs/races/etc. that we still don't have definite, one-way answers on. (Like the long-debated "tribal vs city Miqo'te" matter, for example.) -
I gave this as a writing prompt to some folks about a year ago, so I'm gonna shamelessly copy-paste the whole thing. =B (CONTEXT: I have an IC running gag with Y'raja claiming to be The Godsbow. Nobody actually believes this, herself included. She's just being being obnoxious.) Y'raja Lhiza Trial: Drifter's Concerto Hall (Hard) 8 Players Setting: To deny Y'raja as the ever-exquisite Godsbow is to sing the song of insanity. To quell these false accusations, this odd Sun Seeker challenges all who dare to question the validity of her Oschon-blessed title. She wants to play a game. One based on her own rules, in her very own lair acquired via somewhat legitimate means -- an abandoned Sharlayan amphitheater in the Dravanian Hinterlands. Sorry to disappoint, but there isn't a lot of actual fighting in this fight. Why? Well... You see...

Is it really fair to boil things down to "the more extensive the application process, the more ~special~ the guild creator must deem themselves and/or their creation to be"? While I'm sure there are people like that out there, the assumption that a majority of guilds with long apps have leadership who think this way is a bit harsh. I understand that it's hard to find an ideal guild that suits your tastes while also having an application process that's efficient and convenient. But the whole point that Kai was trying to make is that... guild leaders (the good ones, at least) mainly do what's best for their group and their style. The way you go about applying to a guild with a tavern/cafe theme just isn't going to be the same as a guild that revolves around guerrilla warfare. Some guilds NEED a lengthy app because their leadership wants you to prove that you have strong writing skills/grasp of the lore. Some guilds NEED to have an IC interview process because the guild concept may literally be a company or an employment agency... and interviewing your character makes the most sense for bringing them in. Then you have other guilds that fall somewhere in the middle of every method you can think of. It's not about ego. It's just preference. I dunno what else to tell ya.

Play what you want. Anyone who feels THAT strongly about what you choose to play probably has some insecurity issues they need to sort out that they're just projecting onto you... and people like that can go get stuffed.

Hey, there! I'm currently in the market for shoving my characters into somebody's group. I'm partial to most themes/premises, with the exception of anything with a heavy military/knight theme. I'll specify what I have to offer, as well as what I'm seeking. Easy RP hooks for my characters are denoted with colored text! ──────────────────────── Y’raja Lhiza (29) An Ex-Storm Lieutenant Sun Seeker who gave up her Maelstrom life after the Battle of Cartenau. She’s one of the Warriors of Light who was propelled into the future and has the tattoo to prove it. Devastated by being forgotten by her youngest sister, Y’raja took to traveling around Eorzea and making coin via playing singing gigs as a bard instead. Skilled with words, disguises, and running the fuck away. Boisterous, lackadaisical, at times goofy… but surprisingly wise. Kinsei Hoshikawa (25) Hingan Raen who hails from a family of fortune-telling peddlers. Ex-Hitwoman. Her main trade is selling medicine and teas and she has extensive knowledge of Xaela tribe culture. Knows the cross-tribal tongue. Her defining characteristic is how she speaks; in a flat, almost-emotionless tone. Money-obsessed, reserved, cynical. Antagonistic potential. Qajira Orben (16) A Xaela teen who spent her childhood sailing like most Orben, with the exception that her mother captained a full ocean-faring ship as opposed to a small river boat. She’s spent roughly three years in Eorzea and is trying to find more work so she can save up money. Her aptitude for thaumaturgy is high, she loves studying all things that involve aether, and her culinary skill is masterful. Charming, sisterly, and a tiny bit spoiled. Shaziya Argali (27) Nomadic Xaela who prefers the wild to civilization. She is the Khatun of the Argali, a tribe of storytellers, explorers, and artifact hunters. Is charged with carrying out a generations-old duty that drives most things she does. Like most of her tribe, has mastery in bushcraft. Observant, blunt, short-tempered, stubborn. Dark+Mature themes with this character are OK. ──────────────────────── I'm Okay With: Medium to Heavy RP intensity. At least one night a week where I know I can log on and get RP is nice. I also consider “medium to heavy” to mean that game lore isn't blatantly broken, only bent. Fairly active use of a Discord server and/or website forums. I like seeing the sharing of stories, art, music, and other things that promote character building and camaraderie. A laidback yet mature OOC atmosphere. Finding a group I click with is hard. I'm not afraid to joke about/discuss offensive subject matter. If you don't want people who may respectfully agree to disagree with you or occasionally poke fun at strangers… I won't be a good fit. (For clarity: I’m a friendly, silly, and helpful individual. I just don’t subscribe to putting filters on myself.) I'm NOT Okay With: A group with a lot of people who are new to roleplay. Some are fine, but I'm not really looking to train people in the basics of RP etiquette/procedure. I have no problem helping people learn the lore or play the game, though. An FC with a complicated system for combat. I prefer to use the honor system/freeform RP. In all honesty, I really dislike anything that resembles tabletop elements. However… if there MUST be one, the simpler the better. Feel free to post here or contact me privately if any of this interests you. (I also have a couple of friends who're also looking that I could potentially bring in as referrals.) Thanks!

To kind of springboard off of what Kilieit's saying with my own experiences... For those of us in active RP guilds that may participate in multiple guild arcs over the course of a year? That can potentially have a TON of impact on the characters involved. If your guild's been around for couple of years or so, condensing ALL of those happenings into a single year can become incredibly unrealistic... Especially if it's a combat-oriented guild, since some people can contract injuries that require many months of healing. To fit everything into one year, you'd either have to retcon them participating in certain events/arcs that occurred after they got injured, or you'd have to retcon the injury itself from ever happening. Neither scenario is preferable, especially if the character's injury/involvement added something pretty major to the course of events/overall plot. I can see how someone with an incredibly busy RL schedule, small and/or barely active guild, or who plays a character who lacks a proactive nature may not apply to any of what I talked about. And that's totally fine. But for those of us who either get a decent amount of RP in, or want to treat things with as much feasibility as we can manage... Cramming all of our characters' development and experiences into the span of a year would be a hassle.

Huh. The calendar reset thing is actually news to me. Guess I just missed it, lol. I will update everything accordingly, then!
-
I personally go by the passage of real-life time because following anything else is way too confusing -- for ME, anyway. So I'm in the camp that's treating the current in-universe year as 1581.

I. Basic Info Characters Y'raja Lhiza, Kinsei Hoshikawa, Shaziya Argali, Ember Blackfeather (Please see signature for links to bios!) Primary Character I'd like to say that I RP all of my characters interchangeably... but Y'raja's been around the longest and has the most development. Linkshells / FCs: Sonder, The Bladed Pinion Primary RP Linkshell: Sonder II. RP Style Amount of RP (Light, Medium, Heavy) I am a Medium-Heavy RPer, although I do engage in dungeon and EX runs. (Not a PvPer or hardcore raider by any means... unless there's glamour gear I'm dying to have.) I hover in-between short post style and paragraph post style, leaning towards the latter. You can go ahead and toss me in the "lore nazi" pile, but I'm not militant about it. Views on RP Combat/Injuries I prefer to discuss intense injuries in advance. We don't have to make a production out of it, just a simple OOC "Hey, are you comfortable if xyz happens?" is sufficient. As for combat, I am not a fan of dice rolls and/or stat sheets. You can privately ask me for my reasoning on this. I prefer to use the honor system and I consider my give-and-take ratio to be quite fair. If this is an issue, I can just sit out on combat events/portions with no hard feelings! Views on IC Romance I enjoy romance RP, but I want relationships to develop in a fairly organic fashion. Flirting with my characters is fine and welcome. No permission to court them necessary. Foreplay is fine, but straight-up ERP kind of bores me, tbh. I am also comfortable with multiple styles of romance RP. I will do (and have done) hetero, same sex, poly/open, platonic, etc. As far as tone, I'll do anything that ranges from passionate to sickly sweet and cute. Views on Non-Romantic RP (Family Ties, etc.) Totally fine with all sorts of RP as long as there's consent and good OOC communication as to what is and isn't acceptable. Above all else, I enjoy RP that is meaningful and contributes to character development. While 100% of the RP I do may not necessarily qualify as that, most of it does. Views on Lore I am a stickler for lore. My RP philosophy essentially boils down to "adhere to and bend the lore as much as you can without breaking it". Creativity and headcanon are fine, provided they are within reason by the universe's standards and actually serve a purpose. I prefer to ask "why" before I ask "how". If it doesn't add to the character(s) and/or the plot(s) they're involved in, I'll probably feel that it doesn't really need to be included. Views on Chat Functions (/say, /linkshell, etc) I do the majority of my RP via /say and /em. I will follow the guidelines of whatever FCs/LSs I join in terms of how those are handled (i.e. if FC chat is IC, I'm fine with it... if FC chat is OOC, I'm also fine with it). I can RP over Discord in a forum post-esque style as well, but I'm not the biggest fan of it. If anything unsavory or questionable is to be RPed, then I obviously delegate to /party or /tell. III. Other Info Country: USA Timezone: EST Contact Info: Discord (Kismet#5943), Enjin Profile. I also accept PMs right here on RPC!

The idea of "what makes sense in real life must obviously also be true in the game in some form, even if we don't receive official confirmation of it from the lore team" is often debated in various RP communities, this one included. What's going on in this thread is no different. The logical part of my brain certainly leaves room for multiple languages being spoken in present-day Hydaelyn. Because that's what simply makes sense. Especially when we don't know how present-day Thavnairians (or Meracydians, provided there's any left) speak, and we won't know until they either send us an NPC delivering such information or allow our characters to go there. But the part of me that is very conservative about jumping the gun doesn't want to get too presumptuous until I see better, distinct examples. In conclusion... Everyone will respectfully have to agree to disagree at this point. Some people want to follow IRL logic, some want to wait and see what lore reveals. As I've said in my last two posts, ultimately, you adhere to whatever best suits your tastes. I think as long as you aren't pushy and (no pun intended) communicate your intent well enough, you'll be fine either way.

The part that I put in bold is what I was going for when I said "dialect". Kind of like how American Southerners have their own slew of accents, expressions, and colloquialisms that Americans from the North may not understand. It's the exact same language, but different rhythm and sayings. Err... The most I'm able to gather from what I think you're going on about here is that, in short, you just really really want your character to talk weird. Specifically, you want language to be the catalyst for this oddity in their speech. And you think that due to the wide spread of various languages, dialects, and accents there are in real life... that it must obviously be present in the game's world, too. On a fundamental level, I get that. I really do. But sadly, there just isn't much support for unique languages apart from the common tongue that are currently being used en masse -- with the exception of Xaelan tongue(s). Every race does have their own individual languages, that was never in question. But it's heavily implied that those are outdated and not widely used anymore, outside of a handful of terms. (Someone please correct me if I'm wrong on this.) Personally, I'm of the opinion that the concept of a character with 'caveman-esque speech' seems kind of weird and/or unnecessary, unless your character has some really funky backstory that justifies it (like being sheltered their whole life or something)... That's just me, though. If that's truly what you want to do because it'll make you happiest, then go for it.

Throughout various quest lines, foreigners have been conversing with native Eorzeans who do not possess the Echo just fine. To my knowledge, the only confirmation we have of an entirely different language being spoken in the PRESENT day is whatever the 'Xaela common tongue' is that most Xaela used for cross-tribe communication in Othard (I suppose one could also count the whistle and click system of the Geneq). And even then, we have no idea if that language is necessarily just straight-up Mongolian or not. Anything else is speculation at this point. (And yes, this even applies to Doma. Any Doman terms are highly implied to be part of a dialect.) All of that being said, I think you can still effectively RP a character that has difficulty with communication. Unnamed Merc pretty much already gave most of the suggestions I would've thrown out there. But at the end of the day, you ultimately do you, of course.

discussion Current State of the MMO Market
Kismet replied to Parth Makeo's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
My personal issue with the MMO market right now is... I can tell you exactly what I hate and what I think doesn't work. And there's a LOT of things that qualify. I can sit here all day and list off games that almost got it right, but screwed up on a handful of things. But if you'd ask me to tell you how to fix all of it and revitalize the market, you'd be met with silence. I don't know what the next big thing is or even should be. I can't even make a prediction for where I think technology is or should be going. And that frustrates me to no end! I think the one thing I have learned from everything is that I need to stop getting hyped for MMORPGs that're coming out. Wildstar and Black Desert burned me bad from the start, and what happened to both EQNext and Revival just broke my damned heart. I'm tired of putting so much of my faith into things only for them to either crash and burn, or never even see the light of day. -
I play a young Xaela from the Orben tribe, so I'm operating under the impression that sailing around Othard for the majority of her life would've given her a wider exposure to a variety of dialects than the average Xaela. I haven't completely settled on how she talks as a result of that (she's literate because her mother was, so at most she probably has a faint accent)... but I don't think it'd be unreasonable for her to at least have a good understanding of many different accents/dialects she hears. She can speak whatever the 'common Xaela tongue' is fluently. As for my Raen, there will be certain slang terms and expressions she won't get, and she has trouble pronouncing Elezen names/words. But it ends there.

Samurai and Blue Mage in FFXIV - Weapons
Kismet replied to Altitis Acquired's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Do you really want the future of SAM to look like this? Is that what the kids think is hip and happenin' nowadays? I mean, why stop at only two katanas? Let's make it three. Y'know, just to be that much extra: In all seriousness, if we get SAM, I do want it to be a DPS. But no dual-wielding katanas. If it's going to dual wield something, let it be a weapon that's actually sensible to dual wield. -
The Hydaelyn Job Faire: An Event for Making Connections!
Kismet replied to xelliexell's topic in Chronicled Events
I have been WAITING for someone to host something like a job fair-styled guild/LS recruitment drive, so seriously, thank you. I'm going to attend the heck out of this. -
I wholeheartedly agree. I hate Hildebrand with a burning passion. Hated him ever since 1.0, and he's only gotten worse with time. In my opinion, the one good thing that ever came of his questline was the Scholasticate spinoff. I like the tone of it and the lore it provides of Ishgardian culture is interesting to me. Not saying it's the best writing ever, it's just better than the crap that spawned it. Different strokes for different folks, of course.

I'm extremely pleased. I also mained RDM back in FF11, which is what sort of launched my tendency to lean towards classes in MMOs that're either jack-of-all-trades sorts or hybrids. As I was musing with friends about how RDM would work in FF14 while staying true to what makes RDM feel like RDM, one of my main suggestions was that they could have some official equivalent to Umbral Fire/Ice or Cleric Stance. Where instead of attack vs heal/fire vs ice, you switch between melee and magic, and you had to build a resource for using magic (or certain types of magic) via your melee abilities. Feels good to know I was right on the ball with that! I plan on making my Ala Mhigan alt a RDM in-character, class lore permitting. (Worst case scenario is that she's a fencer who also picked up thaumaturgy at some point. Not a stretch at all.) The plan right now is that she'll act as a teacher of the art to two of my friends' characters. So we're all pretty excited for it! (Of course, if they ever release Blue Mage... Depending on how it's handled, my plans could change.)
-
Mostly excited for RDM. The raids also seem like they have the potential to be neat. Curious about lore behind the new beast tribe and their primal. I'm happy about swimming/diving from an RP immersion standpoint, but I'm not the biggest fan of the animations. They seem a little... stiff? But that could possibly change between now and launch. The choice of mounts is also a little weird, considering there are some non-flying mounts that would make so much more sense for being able to swim/dive.
