Why You Should Keep an Open Mind and Not Judge Other Roleplayers in Most Cases
Kismet replied to Sig's topic in RP Discussion
Everyone should just be like me and assume everyone just flat-out sucks from the get go. That way, when it turns out they're NOT shit, then I get to be pleasantly surprised! If not? Then I have nothing to be disappointed about because I already expected a lack of quality, so then I can be on my merry way. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ -
I don't like it. I liked the other one, the one that didn't win. This one: http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com/hairdesign_2015/F_08.jpg I'm really sad it didn't win. Agreed! That's one of the ones I thought was super cute. And the highlight scheme would've allowed for some nice color variation. Oh, well. Maybe there will be another contest in the future some day. ;_;

The male one is gorgeous. The female one, as I said about its concept design, feels sort of redundant. It's like a crappier Gold Saucer ponytail that's to the side with a gaudy hair piece and awkward bangs... but that's just me.
-
I adore the dungeon armor. I like the Void Ark sets, but they mostly feel like somewhat gaudy redesigns of the World of Darkness gear, in my opinion. The dungeon stuff is way more my speed. And the new dungeon looks gorgeous.

I've said this in another thread, but I'll repeat it here: I have a friend who likes to fill in the following part of emotes that include would in them (without explaining what prevented them from doing said action) with "but they were mauled by a bear". Mind you, we don't actually post that in chat to anyone. It's just an inside joke of our guild's Mumble. But it's what I'm always going to think in my mind about that character's actions, unless they fill in the blanks. Sarah would prance down the street, humming a tune that was full of joy... but she was mauled by a bear. This keeps me sane.

Dat Void Ark, tho... And dat gear... Slightly hyped.

Sounds interesting. Please add me on Kinsei Hoshikawa. Thank you!

Mine also! Surely this thread will go down in the annauls of history as one of the greatest threads of naul time.

Puns make some people cranky. But that's okay, because they don't have to acknauledge them if they don't want to.

Not only am I disappointed in what was picked for finalists, but I'm disappointed in what's currently winning. The last I checked, 21 for females was winning? That hairstyle is pretty redundant, imo. It's just a girlier Golden Saucer ponytail that's pulled to the side and over the shoulder. And then for males, a ~pretty boy~ over-the-eye style is winning. Very close in 2nd place is a frankly tacky, ratty-looking Asian-esque ponytail. Never thought I could be so let down by both the devs AND the community in one fell swoop...

I treat Y'raja's songs as what are essentially very long incantations with melodies. She has lyrics she wrote herself for each type of song, and typically sings them aloud throughout a battle. Playing a harp to accompany said singing is mostly for flavor/to add to atmosphere for the sake of morale. As for the physical abilities, I agree with what's already been said by others. My character likely does a mix of both. A couple of skills are actually her flipping about like a crazy acrobat and flinging off arrows. Others are purely magical in nature. For an example, my FC once had an event where our characters needed to sneak into a warehouse. When I wanted Y'raja to use the equivalent of Flaming Arrow to create a distraction, I played it as a regular arrow she shoots at a desired location that bursts into a ring of flames upon singing a short incantation. Of course, if you wanted to, perhaps your character can't do most of what BRDs are capable of in-game. Maybe they're lazy. Maybe they're a terrible singer/instrument player. Maybe they're only a bard in terms of morale boosting/musical ability, but in battle they use [insert weapon other than a bow here]. tl;dr: Get creative and have fun with it!
-
It's all in the presentation! My main, Y'raja, calls herself the actual Godsbow. She does this in an intentionally boisterous and obnoxious manner, to such a point that a person's character would either have to be tremendously sheltered/gullible or brain-dead to believe that BS. Does she actually believe this herself? Nah. It's more of a long-running joke that's spawned from a mix of fond childhood memories and nervous things that were blurted out by mistake. But will she gladly ride the wave of ANYONE who'd actually think she's serious? Hell, yeah! As others have said, if you can't convey this well IC, there's nothing wrong with some OOC clarification of "hey, my character's just crazy/goofy/a moron". The majority of people should understand. =)

Equating real world "conservatism" with conservatism in a culture is a bit silly. [snip] Edited to Add: And for clarification, what I mean by "attempting to equate real world "conservatism" with conservatism in a culture is...this has nothing to do with modern day politics or political talking points. Cultures are by nature conservative. They want to remain as they are. They cling to values that have sustained them when they encounter different cultures. This is how cultures work. In the context of Eorzea, we have a lot of very traditional (from our world perspective) behavior mixed with very liberal (again, from our world behavior) mores and values. Xenophobia actually makes perfect sense when outsiders are constantly causing the forest to eat people. Xenophobia makes sense when you are living in a meritocracy that values gold and success over all else, and every newcomer is a potential threat. Xenophobia makes sense when you are part of an embattled religion that believes that any difference of opinion or thought is heresy, and will thus bring down your entire civilization. The only city that isn't really xenophobic or necessarily racist is Limsa Lominsa, but it's also a city founded by pirates of all races. So..yeah. ^This, this, THIS. These two posts pretty much say it all. Y'know... Some of the commentary being made in this thread (and a couple of others) is going right back to that RP pet peeve of mine I can't stand -- the assumption that because something works a certain way in real life or makes sense for a certain group of people/location/set of circumstances in real life, that it MUST be how things work in this FICTIONAL setting! Yeah... no. We don't determine that. That's not how things work. Do you have to like everything that goes on in Eorzean culture? Of course not! Can you work around those things or ignore them? (And avoid RP with characters that support said ideals?) Absolutely! But should you try to warp a fictional world and its lore-- that you didn't create --to your personal, pristine view of what does or doesn't make sense just because you don't like it or just because that's what you think seems most logical? ...If that's what you want to do on your own time within your own RP circle, have a blast. But don't present it like it's fact, or the most obvious train of thought anyone else should be having here. Because it's not.

I'm sure that my two cents here will just be things people have already said (I didn't read through the whole thread), but... I think they could definitely have a child. They're both humanoid beings. I don't think anything "downstairs" or in their organs would be so different that it would prevent pregnancy. This was my opinion BEFORE we got official confirmation of half-breeds in lore (which actually happened before Hilda was ever seen). However, I don't think said child would have both Miqo'te and Au Ra features. I can't say for sure, as I don't have evidence/confirmation from the lore team, obviously. But I would like to think that what makes sense is that the child would have an appearance that's either distinctly Miqo'te or distinctly Au Ra. But, for me? All of the "could it happen" talk is actually besides the point. Instead, my main concern is what it ALWAYS is whenever anyone does any out-of-the-box concept like this in RP or RP backstories... Why do this? What purpose does it serve? What's the justification? Why do these two characters HAVE to be having a mixed child? Can't they just... not?

Did Koji or anyone else from the lore team ever straight up say that Doman language and Japanese language were 100% one in the same? Do we know if Domans even have their own entire language, aside from the small handful of unique terms we've seen thus far? I ask because I'm not particularly a fan of the idea of taking conjecture and presenting it like it's fact or the most logical conclusion one should draw. Doma is inspired by Japanese culture... but that doesn't mean that Doma IS Japan. That probably sounds pretty obvious to most of us, but there are some people who don't seem to quite get that.

too late. I've seen it. I am sure i will continue to. ... /em sobs into her hands.

As long as nobody's literally doing "Wow, Eorzea! Sugoi! Kawaii desu! Uguu~" then I don't care. ...Much. <_<

I have many RP pet peeves, but I think one that's cropped up in recent years is when people assume that real-life culture/customs/ideals/norms automatically apply to the setting they're RPing in. Just because in YOUR culture it might be rude to do something a certain way, who's to say this is the case in either Eorzea or Othard, let alone in the entire world of Hydaelyn? That just gets on my nerves. I find a similar annoyance in Doman RPers (regardless of race) who assume that Doma and Japan are one in the same, so you can literally just rip whatever you like from modern-day Japanese society and have it be lore-appropriate for Domans to do or have. Just no. Another one I think is funny to point out because it's hilarious is the inappropriate use of 'would' in emotes. Sally would sashay down the road. Yes, you said she WOULD do that... but it's implied that she didn't because something stopped her. Why didn't she sashay down the road? WHY?! I HAVE TO KNOW. TELL ME, DAMNIT. A friend of a friend said that whenever she sees someone make an emote of that nature, she fills it in with "but they were mauled by a bear". This is what I'm doing from now on. That's right. In my personal headcanon, your character's just gonna get wrecked by a random bear unless you complete that shit. (Not really, but I will laugh at you.)

I would touch Hilda... That is all.
-
Either way, my new name for Y'shtola is "Special Snowflake Eyes".
-
Along a similar strain to Qadan's inquiry, I'm not confident at all in my pronunciations of a majority of the Xaela tribe names... or Mongolian in general. Any tips or dummy guides for derps like me are highly welcome and appreciated!

I agree with a couple of others in that just rolling an entirely new character concept seems more efficient. It's just less of a hassle. You see, I'm an extremely lazy person, so I don't see why one should bother jumping through so many loops and workarounds to salvage something so easily replaceable... But this is your character, not mine. If you MUST go with one of your poll options, 1 and 3 are probably the best sounding ones, imo. With a strong bias towards 1, because 3 is bit too silly for my tastes. (Although it may have the potential for telling a more interesting story than going with Fantasia does.)

I hope these two are DoW, and not class locked. I love the coats. I'm hopeful that it is indeed multi-class, because in the pic above we have a MNK wearing it, but in this one below, it's a BRD: Here are some other higher res gears:

**SCREAMS AT BRD LB3** This is what I wanted! An arrow rain attack! But it's even more glorious than what I imagined. Based Yoshi-P. Truly, truly based. Thank you. Also, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought of PSU and/or PSO2 when they saw MCH's LB3. I can totally dig it.
