Wuddup. Welcome to whatever this is. Have fun. I couldn't think of anything clever...

He looks like he's made of candy.

And yeah, this is way older than I thought. You all can just ignore everything I said.

(I only read to this comment, so I'm not going to respond to all of you. Sorry.) This is exactly how I feel about it. While there is lore behind Fantasia (sort of...?) and you can't be called out for it by anyone who has the slightest patience for other people, I've always kind of seen it as a "Really? That's how you wanted to handle this?" situation. You can IC it if you want, but it'd be a lot more refreshing if you just didn't. Because while there's lore within the Fantasia tooltip, it doesn't really specify how that works. I doubt you're ICly brought to a character creation screen. We don't really know if it turns you into something random or something you want or something the person who gave it to you wants. It's more messy and goofy than just a retcon. If that's how you want to play it, fine, go for it. I'm not trying to stop anyone from playing the game how they want, but personally I try to avoid it. Ftr, I started my main (Uther) as a Hyur Midlander, but once I started questing in Coerthas early in ARR I decided he'd fit better as an Elezen. I just retconned him to have always been Elezen, but his father gave all of his children Midlander given names to teach them some humility from birth, since the Midlanders are generally less fortunate overall than Elezen in Ishgard, but just as brave/righteous/cool/whatever. This is a bit rambly, but my point is there are better ways to go about it than IC race changes, although that is an option.

To say that Ul'dah is dangerous while the other cities are not, or whatever, is just incorrect. The setting of Eorzea is not all flowers and clouds, like its pretty models and insane hair options want us to believe. It's pretty rough just about everywhere for just about everyone, even if the aesthetics don't lend themselves to that kind of grit. I mean, really, even the homeless people have bowflex bodies... That aside, and back on topic with the issue of RPing elsewhere. There's been a lot of talk on this forum for a long time of "We need to move out of the Quicksand." No one's leaving the Quicksand in mass herds. I try to not RP there because it's crowded, out-of-character for what my dude is interested in, and I once saw two lalafells emoting an extremely detailed make-out session against a column there. Seriously, like detailed down to the motion of their saliva. Gross. But the Quicksand is very popular because it has just ended up that way. It's in a convenient location, it's got seating, it's got poor people and rich people and merchants and soldiers just by virtue of being the biggest Ul'dahn tavern. It's generally a decent hub for RP, and people are always going to meet there, even if there are better places to roleplay eating a sandwich and getting hammered. RP is not spreading out any time soon in mass quantities. Like it or hate it. I find Limsa to be more convenient for RP, personally, because of the insane amounts of empty chairs and tables in the upper deck. Gridania is just a nightmare. Seriously, there's a single tavern in the whole town and it's in an awkward spot imo. I agree that Ul'dah is not the ultimate RP location, but it's not going to change. Especially not from this thread. I appreciate the rant on how Ul'dah is garbage though. I don't agree with everything you said, but it beats the usual "What's your character's favorite color?" threads that seem to spawn endlessly from the bad idea void that lurks and waits at the bottom of this forum and all other forums. Seems more human, and sparks an interesting conversation. Good on you, bud.

Hey, welcome back! Everything has changed since you last played. 1.0 was a loooong time ago. Hope you enjoy the journey! Welcome to the RPC, feel free to ask any questions you might have. We're a friendly bunch.

NO. WE'RE DEAD. EVERYONE'S DEAD.

You called me a close-minded buffoon. You don't really get to say you welcomed everyone's opinion when you jumped on me for disagreeing with you. That's not how this works. The problem with telling people these things on the internet is that everything you've said is still here to scroll up to. Do I like it? No. I still think it is a terrible, terrible idea and I'll never like it. So there goes "merely backpedaling." All I'm saying with the Superman argument, is that I can't stop you and I'm not worried about your personal enjoyment so do whatever you want. You paid for this game. It is yours to play as you choose. I don't know why you're trying to make me your enemy for disagreeing with you. Or why, given the implied audience of the quoted post, you're trying to ridicule me in front of the rest of the thread. And while we're at it, since I made that comment about how everyone can scroll up earlier, might as well be fair: Yes, I spoke in generalizations. Yes, I could've been more polite. But I needed to adequately get my opinion across without another pampering "It'll be hard!" response. And from my experience (MAYBE NOT YOURS HURHUR) those generalizations are fairly accurate. Do what you want. Play the game how you want. But if you were going to play the game how you wanted to begin with anyway and you think I'm close minded for my opinion, why did you even put up this thread to begin with?
-
I'm not forcing anything on anyone. And I'm not asking you to not do it because I don't like it. I don't care what you do. You could RP Superman and I'd give you the ol' thumbs up. To say that no one thinks it's a bad idea but me is a bit extreme though. The few people in this forum don't speak for RPers as a whole, the same way I don't. You asked "Why can't my character be from FFXI?" and I responded with a fact "This is FFXIV" as well as my opinion, which you seemed to ask for from readers. Sooo is it close-minded because it disagrees with yours, or... what? I never said I wasn't open to hearing ideas. I just don't think it's a good idea. That doesn't mean I'm RP Police. Do what you want, dude. I really like this forum when people don't knee-jerk into personal insults because someone disagrees with them. Calm down, everyone. There's no reason we can't disagree and still be civil.

Negative. Actually let me edit this, the character can do what the writer can, not what you deem is appropriate. It might not even be minor considering if they can write up a good story, their differing background may be more enjoyable to interact with. Lol really? This is like when you ask your teacher if you can go to the bathroom in third grade and she says "DURR I DON'T KNOW, CAN YOU?" Replace "can't" with "shouldn't" and add in "because this is ridiculous" As for the second part of this: If you rely on a universe-hopping gimmick to make your character interesting, you should try sitting down and re-evaluating what you think makes a good character. "I'm from another world" is more annoying to most RPers than it is intriguing. If I picked up a book that was based entirely on being from a different desert town than the current desert town, I'd throw it in a fire. You shouldn't do this, because it is not good writing. It is a writing supplement. No one will think this is clever and fun, and most people will avoid you. Save yourself the heartache. Just switch some words around. These settings are not so different that you could never recreate the magic you had in FFXI's story. But yes, as was unnecessarily and ludicrously pointed out, you CAN if you want. TECHNICALLY.
-
Your character can't be from FFXI because this game is FFXIV. It's the same reason you don't see Bilbo Baggins hanging out in King's Landing. They are two separate stories with two separate universes, regardless of similarities. It isn't hard to just switch your character's minor details.

Warrior is on here twice. I put DoW, I guess, because Tancred is using spears, axes, swords, knives, and bows whenever they're available. After losing the hammer he was known for in the Garlean War, he's been trying out new weapons and fighting styles based on the cultures he travels through and whatever weapon is available at the time.

Glad you could get onto Balmung. Good call jumping in right after maintenance. Welcome to the RPC, welcome to the server, and welcome to the game! We're a friendly bunch so don't be afraid to ask any questions or jump into any conversation. Hope you enjoy your time in our little community!

Hey, welcome to Balmung and to the RPC! Looks like you've got a character down that you're really excited to RP and explore the world with, which is great. It's always fun to watch RPers who are really enthusiastic about the character they're playing. I see that you're new to MMO RP, but I wouldn't worry about it. It's pretty simple once you get the hang of it, and I'm sure you'll fit in great with the rest of us. Welcome again! Enjoy your time here and let us know if you have any questions!

Walk ups not welcome. If I don't know you already, I never want to know you. No, in all honesty, I think it's a shyness thing for a lot of people. Running into someone's conversation is an awkward situation, even in a virtual world. Ever had someone do it to you in real life? More often than not you think to yourself "So, what, you've just been eavesdropping?" or "Who are you and why are you talking to us?" In a virtual reality it's a bit more acceptable, of course, but the stigma is still there in the back of people's minds. Plus sometimes people just don't have an "in" for the conversation. A lot of times it turns into someone trying to ICly correct someone else, or one-up them in their own conversation and no one likes that. I think that's why people say "walk-ups welcome" instead of "looking for walk-ups", in my mind "walk-ups welcome" translates to "I know this isn't the real world and I'm totally cool with you butting in on my conversation for the sake of RP" whereas "looking for walk-ups" means "I have something to say and I don't care who hears it." I hope that makes sense, as I have a tendency to ramble on this forum. I do, however, think this community can get sort of cliquish at times (not intentionally exclusive, but it's just how things happen) and RPing in the housing districts and in the Quicksand so much is kind of killing off some walk-up opportunities, but that might be a discussion for another time/place.

Hey! Welcome to the RPC! I, too, played a lot of WoW. Pretty much from vanilla up until MoP, so I can relate. It looks like you and I have a similar issue with getting a ton of ideas and making countless alts, too. It's all good. You seem to have a pretty extensive RP background, so I'm sure you'll make it work! Anyways, welcome to our little site. Hope you enjoy your time with us! Feel free to ask any questions you may have.

Hey welcome to the community! Glad you could make it to Balmung, I hear it's been pretty rough lately. I wouldn't worry too much about being new to MMO RPing. If you've played MMOs before and you've got a good enough imagination, it should fall into place relatively easily. I'm sure you'll fit right in. There are quite a few linkshells and free companies that enjoy both raiding and RPing, and you can check them out here: http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/forumdisplay.php?fid=15&filtertf_srvr=Balmung See which ones you like and if they're recruiting. Have fun and enjoy your stay with us here!

Welcome to the RPC! Don't be shy about jumping right into the RP. We're a friendly bunch. I played on Wyrmrest Accord, too, for a few months when a friend of mine coaxed me into trying RP in WoW (I had played for nearly a decade, but never RP'd) I can't say I really loved my time in that game's RP scene, but that was more because it was a massive shift from LOTRO RP, which is what I was used to. Anyways, sorry for rambling. I hope you enjoy your time here!

That depends on what kind of character you want to roleplay, really. Just take it in stride, read the quest dialogue if you find something interesting, and check around these forums for information on cultures and cities. There's also the wiki tab which has information about not only player characters, but non-player characters, cities, cultures, story events, etc. It's a bit overwhelming to look it all up at once, so I'd just find an area (Limsa, Ul'dah, Gridania, Ishgard, etc.) you think looks like something you're into and spread out slowly from there. If you have any direct questions ("What kind of people live in Ul'dah" for instance) don't be shy about making a thread on these forums to get quick answers from multiple sources. The RPC has a wealth of information on all things FFXIV.

I'm not sure I have any characters who would necessarily be drawn to Khyran, or have heard rumors about him, but it sounds like an interesting character idea and I love the artwork. I'm always around looking for walk-up RP, so if you see me running by, don't be afraid to strike up a conversation! I'm rarely doing anything too important to drop it and RP for a bit. -
Apparently Jenova and ...Faerie? might be trying to start up roleplaying communities. The two largest are Balmung and Gilgamesh with no comparison. If you want to play on either of those servers, don't give up hope. Recruitment tends to open up in the early, early hours of the morning from what I've heard (like, 2-4 a.m.) If you don't want to put in the effort to try to join the servers at those times, I'd recommend searching the forums to find other budding RP servers, like the first two I mentioned. Good luck in your quest to find a server to call home. Don't give up hope!

Oh no! My secret's out! Quick! To the Fantasia depository!
