Speaking of choice, it would be nice if an EU server gets picked soon and has as much attention/promotion as Balmung does. And don't say there shouldn't be one, because most MMOs out there usually have at least one EU and NA server for RP (official and unofficial) and they've done well. Sure, it sounds fine and dandy if we could all be on one server, but latency does play into it. Some of us aren't just here for RP, we also want to raid and play fluently and it can be laggy from the other side of the pond. I might as well repeat myself too, you don't have to move, you can stay, that's fine, no one is telling you, new people will continue to join and build otherwise, blablabla.

More than one RP server won't hurt. One overpopulated locked server and multiple servers with small (and I mean LS sized) playerbases that don't get enough attention*will* hurt. No one wants to pay extra, telling them to just so they can be with the rest of the cool kids is unfair, especially when it might not be what they're after.

If SE was to designate an RP server, would you move?
Flynn Bladebreaker replied to ExAtomos's topic in RP Discussion
A lot of people are forgetting this whole statement. And I'm not sure how the bolded part is harmful, that's what people have been asking for, right? edit: and yes, people who bought their houses from other people, it's unfortunate but it's not their fault they charge double, maybe even triple, than the original plan -

Flynn Bladebreaker replied to ExAtomos's topic in RP Discussion
If they all moved together, that'd be great. But they also got ties between NA/EU friends who probably don't want to move for other reasons. And housing. Meh, SE said they'll compensate and will work on making it easier for FCs to move together. Otherwise, make alts, test the waters. If it flourishes and you like it, great, consider moving. If not, you still got your main. -

Flynn Bladebreaker replied to ExAtomos's topic in RP Discussion
Whether they designate an NA server, or an EU, or maybe even both, I'd move. I don't have much ties to Balmung left so I've got no reason to stay. Sure, in the short term it'll be quiet, slow to kick off because a lot of RPers are settled where they are. But new RPers will always flock in and they'll go to either where it's popular or where it's official. Sadly Balmung became a VIP club ever since you had to pay to transfer in, and I'm pretty sure people get pissed that they have to pay to get with the cool kids. -
discussion An EU server, for EU roleplayers *UPDATED 14/06*
Flynn Bladebreaker replied to Swanmay's topic in RP Discussion
Seems like the best option, really, unless SE responds to it before then (unlikely). -

By the way, when will the voting end? And judging by the winning score, wouldn't we need another vote since they'll be adding 2 new EU servers? Gotta decide on one of them after SB. -
discussion An EU server, for EU roleplayers *UPDATED 14/06*
Flynn Bladebreaker replied to Swanmay's topic in RP Discussion
You forgot the instanced zones which people hated. No no, that was "megaserver emulation" but without the option to select which zone server you'd get placed into. From a server architecture view, SE could keep adding extra zone instances like a megaserver, but they gotta make that implementation better. You could select the zone by going to a zone line and selecting the zone. You just had to hope that said instance had space for you to enter. I remember this clearly. It was horrible and since this is all about RP... It would make "Open-world" RP even worse. This is from my experience with megaservers. It's an experience I'd hate to repeat with FFXIV. I only mentioned it as forgotten as that was part of their HW launch stuff, along with what you had listed. That was something they added after the fact. The first couple times they did multi-instances, you were stuck. Then people complained and they gave us the bare-minimum amount of support to switch. Wasn't all this for a week or two? I can't see it becoming a permanent thing. Like ESO it would make finding the players you want to be with incredibly hard unless you are lucky enough to be in their zone. In ESO's case, you gotta at least know of the player first before you can warp to their zone. This becomes a problem with finding RP as well, especially when you don't know anyone. I was always walking into what I heard was an RP hub and it was empty each time. Through word of mouth I was able to warp to the zone with players thanks to a player, and that wasn't until many many months later. -

Will be honest, if the RP hubs were all at housing areas, I wouldn't transfer. We have a big open world with plenty of hubs to use. I want to RP in that world, meet people in locations you'd expect to. Please don't make housing the only place to find RP. -
discussion Alternate RP server (Updated 5/18/17)
Flynn Bladebreaker replied to Mercer's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Like the EU thread going on, I would strongly suggest a vote. My opinion that if you should choose a sister to Balmung, choose a server that is (or will be) new, or very low on population, and all come together on that instead of popping in to say "Hey, we're doing fine, come here". You won't be getting much fights with the non-RPers over who owns what (I dunno why some think that's a thing but ah well). -
Balmung Transfer Restriction Megathread
Flynn Bladebreaker replied to BumblingSeaBiscuit's topic in FFXIV News
If people want to move, let them. No one is forcing you. It's just nice to have options, especially now when people can't join our server. "Hey, would be nice if we had an official RP tag, or a sister to Balmung." "No we're not moving" that's fine, no one is telling you to. After the shit I've heard today, I'll gladly move if we ever got an official RP server, even if it's an EU one. I don't think SE would even tag Balmung or any of the populated servers, most likely it'd be a new one. -
Balmung Transfer Restriction Megathread
Flynn Bladebreaker replied to BumblingSeaBiscuit's topic in FFXIV News
If only we could make them aware of this. Maybe it might work if we make a forum post on the OF forums? I'm banned on the official forums for life (posted a kermit "here we go again" meme), but I'd have thought this would have been done by now? I can read but not post, and couldn't find anything related to roleplay. If tumblr taught me anything, it's that the minority yell the loudest. Saying that, they have at least given RP icons, so they must be aware in some way. -

Yep, new server here. Hell, I hope SE surprise us and say "btw we're tagging a new server as Roleplaying", save all the damn trouble. -
Balmung Transfer Restriction Megathread
Flynn Bladebreaker replied to BumblingSeaBiscuit's topic in FFXIV News
All SE needs to do is just tag one server each in NA, EU, and JP. They've already given us the player tags, no reason to stop there. And this will help ease up congestion. PVEers will likely move away, new RPers will know where to go, and for us EU folk? Well, I'm completely down for moving if I had a solid answer on where all the EU RP would be. I'm constantly hearing multiple servers and that makes it even harder to decide. -
Roleplayer Uncertainty/Insecurity Theater
Flynn Bladebreaker replied to Warren Castille's topic in Character Workshop
I worry that I'm not a good enough writer to some people, or that my OOC behaviour puts people off from wanting anything to do with my character. When I started RPing 10 years ago it had ups and downs, it was a learning curve. Started in Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, then SWTOR, then GW2, WoW, then finally FFXIV where I actually felt at home for the first few years. Without seeking or planning, my character got in a romantic relationship which also lead to an OOC one, so this game is kinda special to me for that. Sadly a year ago we put trust in a DM to help us with a story, but it ended up dragging on for a few months and made our characters locked in our own house. After that "arc" finally ended, we took a break from RPing. Now that I've come back to the RP scene (or trying to), I'm bumping into a lot of RPers who claim to not want to RP with me because they have better writing skills. Now I don't think I'm bad. I'm simple. My character talks more than he actually emotes through paragraphs, and I use the ingame emotes to compensate. I'm not very descriptive when it comes to writing body language and a ton of other information and maybe even a single word in a paragraph. If I'm RPing with someone and they mostly talked and used ingame emotes, very minimum /em stuff, I'm completely fine with that. I've been told "that's bad RP" or "that's bad writing", and you know, it's definitely not either of them. It's just a simplistic form I prefer to do, as long as my character gets the point across. It could even just be the fact that I like to treat my character as if he was an NPC you can interact with in the game and bring along for your RP plots. TLDR: I get put off RPing with people who think I'm not good enough to RP with them, and that puts me back in my hidey hole. -
Everything. But while I'm looking forward to Othard, I'm also not at the same time because of the weeb culture butchering that's bound to happen.
-
-
Othard's still a big place, we've only seen really what's around Doma and Kugane, not the rest of the continent. If it was the other way around and they were introducing Eorzea to us by focusing on Ishgard, we'd be asuming only hyur/elezen were from Eorzea. I just want to see what life is like around the world. And we are getting female highlander model characters in the MSQ. I'm sure they have reasons up their sleeves for the things we've seen or haven't seen. Gotta be patient.
-
Didn't see any Elezen/Lala/Miqo'te locals in Kugane, mostly Hyur/Roe/Au Ra. Still got to see the rest of Othard to see what races are native to that continent, though you'd think by now they are trying to tell us something. *braces for impact* EDIT: Also yes, Gosetsu is a Roe, not a bulky hyur RP character.

20/04/2017 last update: The Linkshell and Discord server for Europa have officially shut down today. If you were in either of them when they closed, don't panic. Just follow the link below to get invited into the new rooms. http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/showthread.php?tid=18543 - Balmung EU Players

If the ping ever does become worse for us EU peeps (though I've never had any lag problems here in the UK), I hope they'll at least acknowledge it and offer some discounts on transfers. Of course I don't want to move away from the most popular RP server, but I still play the game first and RP second. With that said, I think we need somewhere on the site that's easy to find and says RP server = Balmung. EU server = whatever there is. At the moment they're hard to find unless you know who to ask. Just something to consider. Yes, click on linkshells/FC tabs and it gives you Balmung/Gilgamesh/Other. A little vague IMO
-
I highly doubt they'd remove classes all together, otherwise they'd have to retcon the entire 1-30 stories. At the very least I see them staying, SE are just removing the need to level another class to unlock a job. This way you'll start as GLD for example, once you reach 30 you're a PLD when you do the quest and grab your soul stone. Also quest placements being in high level areas, unless they do some sync thing or move the quests to different locations... no, I just don't see that happening. But if they were removed? Like, removed from the game and lore existence, including the guilds? Where would anyone go to learn? All the RPers who have used the class guilds for story will have to remove them, too.

12/03/2017 update: As of today, Europa and it's linkshell/discord will commence it's shutdown and merge with our neighbour, Balmung EU Players. If you would like an invite to them, please check out their RPC page and contact either myself or one of the officers listed. I will stay in the Europa linkshell/discord to handle any stragglers should they wish to move. http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/showthread.php?tid=18543 - Balmung EU Players The linkshell may be going, but we are still together and will be with even more friends.

We're still alive either me or one of the officers will be in touch with you ingame as soon as we can
