discussion Why FFXIV's rape themes fall monumentally flat
Flynn Bladebreaker replied to Seriphyn's topic in Lore Discussion
*pops in* I'm not sure if this discussion is about how it's presented in the game itself or by RPers, but... There's a certain theme FFXIV is following, and I think it's handling it fine, depending on how you view it. I generally don't always assume rape if something bad is happening to a character. Maybe in games like Witcher 3, but not in any FF title I've seen. With that said, I've been in RP sessions that just go full on, "they've been taken captive, they're being raped and gagged and guts everywhere" and it's like... DUDE! Woah, way to jump right over the PG-13 we're getting. Come on. *pops out* -
Stormblood may change the entire paradigm of RP
Flynn Bladebreaker replied to Seriphyn's topic in RP Discussion
I actually cant wait to get out of Eorzea, so soon in fact. I know there are people who probably think the focus is on Othard and not Ala Mhigo, but that's not the case. Even my character has plans for Ala Mhigo, and whatever they do isn't gonna hinder your character's progression. It might even enhance it, open other opportunities. I can be complainy and negative sometimes, but for this expansion I'm really excited, because we still get what we want, and more. -
Can confirm even the lorebook has real names for the NIN questline NPCs, they are definitely titles/nicknames as their surnames.
-
From what we've seen, most likely yes. A great example is Yamimi Farwalker, a Plainsfolk Lalafell who hails from the Yanxia region of Othard, who follows Plainsfolk naming conventions for her forename and Doman (Raen Au Ra) naming conventions for her surname/epithet. A Doman Miqo'te would likely follow similar conventions, maintaining a Miqo'te forename (without the tribal letter) and a Doman "surname." If you want more lore on Doma and its recent history, I recommend reading this compilation. I really love this example and I wish people used it more, too many full-Japanese/Doman names on non-Doman race players, it's kinda weird seeing. *votes to have example pinned in a lore section, unless it already is*

I like to think some of our RP characters are NPCs that *could* exist in Hydaelyn's lore, sure. But RPing as an actual existing NPC is on the list of no-nos for me. It's almost breaking that line when you RP for NPCs like Momodi even. I get it, everyone's best friends with her. Does it work? It sure can. Given this is an MMO though and often the community does come first, it wont work for the majority of the general public. Privately and not forced on others, by all means, go for it.

Seasonal events also mention that they've met you "last year", so I'm seeing it in a mixed bag. That said I also RP that time has flown with real-time from ARR to present. If the devs came out and said we're in a bubble, or point out exactly how long it's been since Bloodstorm and ARR, I'll be happy to knock off some time to match with the date they present. Interestingly, Yoshi-P commented on the Bloodstorm teaser that some time has passed. We dont know exactly how long. Passed since when? I'd like to get some closure on this by the time it comes out. Edit: Even if the devs announce that Bloodstorm begins 3 or 4 years after ARR (though unlikely), then we as a community who have mostly RPed with time passing as real-time, would not have to take any action or reaction to this. Not like SWTOR were a timeskip was forced, but we can easily just say we've RPed those 3 or 4 years between ARR and Bloodstorm, no need for a timeskip. Anyway, that's just speculation. Probably won't happen.

Sadly this happens more often than it should, which is worrying. Sometimes it's a simple miss of seeing their message. Sometimes their message might not have gone through, and the game tells them this now. Other times they want to be 100% IC weather you like it or not, which is unfair to you if you're AFK. They might even have name tags off so they can't tell if you have the RP or AFK tag on. Point is this has happened to a lot of us. Something I dislike a lot is when I could be AFK or not IC (having no RP tag should be very obvious by now), someone will emote to me and if I don't reply in time they make a snarky emote after like "Fine, guess he's mute too." or "((Ignore me then I don't care))". They aren't worth your time if they're gonna insult you for not acknowledging their character.

Japan Fan Fest - New Stormblood details
Flynn Bladebreaker replied to Maril's topic in FFXIV Discussion
I once imagined a gunblade class to eventually be in the game, using a mix of ranged and melee abilities. "But Flynn, melee and ranged wouldn't work for one class." -

Plenty of Clone Wars/Rebels references in Rogue One as well (the Ghost appears a few times in space and on Yavin, so does Chopper and the intercom calling out General Syndulla). Most don't really know Saw was in Clone Wars during the Onderon rebellion arc. And he's reappearing in Rebels season 3. To those complaining that it doesn't feel like a Star Wars movie, the makers knew that full well going in since it's a war movie that takes place in the Star Wars universe. These origin movies aren't supposed to have the same feeling as the trilogies, it gives more freedom to the makers. I'm just glad that even though it was gritty there was no swearing (ass/piss/fuck/etc), that would have just took me out of the immersion. Chirrut and Baze? "Open to interpretation" as the director says. Incoming more Snoke theories, "They're guardians of the Whills, a Shaman of the Whills/Five Priestesses from Clone Wars are immortal and trained Qui-Gon to become a Force ghost. What if Snoke is one of them? What if Snoke is that messenger in Darth Vader's castle? (though they confirmed his identity anyway, it's not Snoke) -
What it all comes down to in the end.

Coming from a guy that enjoys all Star Wars material equally (prequels, originals, sequels, Clone Wars, Rebels). I enjoyed it. First half was a bit jumpy, third act was a 10/10. The last 3 minutes... Icing on the fucking cake. -
A very late update but we now have a Discord server \o/ https://discord.gg/T9jbsJU Anyone is allowed to join, just remember to check the rules as you do.

I. Basic Info Characters:Flynn Rosenberg Primary character:Flynn Rosenberg Linkshells:Europa, Hugs and Cake, Crystalline Primary RP linkshell:Crystalline [*] II. RP Style Amount of RP (light, medium, heavy): Medium? Heavy on following the lore as close as possible, light on activity. Cannot promise to be there every certain day of the week. Views on RP combat and injuries: All comes down to trust and how fun the players are having. I prefer RP combat with NPCs, found no reason to start with players unless they are generally evil trying to start something. Injuries, keep it family friendly. I don't like seeing how descriptive you can be at showing how much gore you can shove in. Also down to players and what they want to happen to their character. Views on IC romance: All good. Flynn has been happily married IC for a long time. Views on non-romantic RP (family ties, etc): Difficult. For family RP you either RP them as NPCs or have other players RP as said family member. I've had two friends who were the closest to family Flynn had at the time, but the players gave up on the game too quickly, so now they're gone or either retconned. Parents? His dad's still alive, just not nearby. He hasn't fallen into the dead parents category yet. Views on lore: Important, I try to learn as much as I can to apply to my character and RP. I like to think of Flynn as an NPC you can interact with if you played the game. I refuse to break it or ignore it, or interact with players who do both. If you want to do that, I think that's fine. But in an MMO it is usually best kept to small groups out of public. Views on chat functions (/say, /linkshell, etc): /say is for talking, /linkshell can be IC or OOC, depends on the owner. /em is for emotes and extending conversations. /yell I generally don't see it as IC in public unless an event is being hosted and they need to use it. /shout definitely not IC. /whisper if you use "" I will see it as IC. I will point out though the latest trend in using /say and /em weirdly has confused me. For example, in /say a lot of people RP talking with ""s, sometimes without. But when someone uses /say for an emote of sort, (Eg. Flynn R: Scratches his nose), I will probably automatically respond IC with "Who scratches who's nose?" Don't we have /em and /party for that? And also the text waster. (Eg. Flynn R: /em //Flynn Rosenberg scratches his nose). [*] III. 1. Don't treat RP as a job or chore, it is a hobby for you and others to have fun with. 2. Your RP will never be 100% perfect. Accept that not everyone has to like your character and move on if they have a problem. 3. Don't blend OOC memes/slang into IC, remember the game's universe and setting. Just because it sounds funny or hip (Hey Lalafell are all popoto, and femqo'te are hiding bananas) doesn't mean it'll fit. 4. Be considerate of other people's immersion, we are all RPing too. 5. Don't put RP lore ahead of in-game lore. 5.5. Quicksand isn't a brothel! It's not the only adventurer's guild! If you acknowledge everything that happens there as canon in RP it would be completely different than how it is represented in in-game lore! 5.6. Hermits Hovel is also not an ERP hub in lore! 6. Don't assume the position that should be taken by an NPC (example: Owner of an already existing building, the new Imperial legatus with a legion ready to invade) 7. Don't be a weeb. 8. If you get offended by other people's commandments, boohoo.

discussion Fantasias in Lore
Flynn Bladebreaker replied to SapphireSkylines's topic in Lore Discussion
*Is too lazy to search and copy paste for my opinion but I'm probably bad and should feel bad for saying it anyway* In my headcannon Fantasia is only a myth, like there's only one in existence. They aren't in mass production. When a character says they've used one, Flynn just thinks they're lying/crazy and are using some advanced glamour. I know characters who have changed from male to female, became pregnant, went back to male... psst that's not how it works. But people can do what they want, right? That's the popular saying these days. If the RP characters using fantasias were canon, the world would just- No, it is simply too insane to be accidentally used as it is. -
I always thought Phantasia wasn't canon. If it is brought up in RP, my headcanon treats it like an advanced glamour. The loreteam did say it gives you the courage to be what you want, so in my view it might make you LOOK like another race/gender, but you aren't actually. If you're a hyur, "accidentally drank it" become a lalafell, you are still a hyur (I mean how common is this friggin thing? Didn't the loreteam say it's ability would be too insane to exist?) At the end of a day it's a player-service, not EVERY item on the mog station or received through mail is lorefriendly. FFXIV has been the only MMO I've played where a race/gender changing player-service has been treated as canon by RPers for some reason.

I think you hit it spot on. That's how I see it too. Since it says Xaela use Ancient Auri I can only assume that's Fantasy Japanese to English players, like they stick to the old ways while the others don't. I doubt any more needs to be said at this point or it's just gonna drag on. We're adults, let's just accept what's been written and laid out for us.
-
*grabs popcorn* I always preferred the term "Common" to "Eorzean" when it comes to the Hyur language, always felt odd hearing players say that. Glad that's cleared up.

Yep we still have some free slots. One of us (me or Quinthel) should be on between the hours you said during the weekend

The New 3.4 RP Status: What it means
Flynn Bladebreaker replied to ZOMGodzilla's topic in RP Discussion
I must confess I'll be in this boat, but only because I'm used to having some sort of RP tag/flag/indicator in other games before they were finally added here. -
Nothing new to update this month as it's been quiet over the summer, but our doors are still open and we are ready to help with the new PVE content if you need it!

The New 3.4 RP Status: What it means
Flynn Bladebreaker replied to ZOMGodzilla's topic in RP Discussion
Just like in LOTRO I'll only use the tag if I am in-character and walk-up friendly, just as I assume that's what other characters are when they have it on. If it turns off when I log or disconnect, meh, no biggy I can turn it back on. It would be annoying if I logged in and it was still on when I'm not ready for RP, then I'd have to turn it off before logging.
