  1. ★ Updated Aghurlal's information on the wiki and my tumblr to reflect the fact he now lives in an apartment. ★ Updated Caiden's images on the wiki and my tumblr to reflect her new appearance. ✦ This is a "retcon" change; in other words, from an in-character perspective, she can be considered to have always looked the way she does now.
  2. I've been looking for something like this since I started playing on Balmung. There's these guys, but they added some extra rules that don't suit my character - they might suit yours, though! Definitely check them out if you think you're interested. Let me know if you come across anything else pre-organised that I haven't heard about, since I'm still very interested in finding some connections that suit him. Or feel free to just hit me up anyway on a 1-on-1 basis. Aghurlal is very experienced in combat, including usage of shortblades, but relatively new to the Sisters (he's been with them for maybe about a year, I'd say?) - so it sounds like he might be paired with your character to guide her on the combat side of things, if that's something you're interested in. Or they could just be assigned a job together - since, while he's proven his worth to a certain degree, he doesn't have a rank or anything; it's not totally out of the question that he'd be working alongside newbies. My in-game name is Aghurlal Qar'akimusun, feel free to send me a tell any time (:
  3. I had a legit nightmare last night - wherein I posted in the Making Connections forum for my character Confiance, but all I got was 11 pages of people telling me his backstory was bad and I should feel bad. I just... subconscious, what?
  4. "Pureblooded" Garleans are their own Hyur-like race, separate from Eorzean races. However: I have a strong recollection (also see the lore dump that I link at the bottom of this post) that the Garlean Empire operates by annexing its new territories and conscripting the able-bodied to go and fight overseas from the conquered territory, preventing them from contributing to uprisings in their homeland. So in other words: Anything you like. Literally. If you wanna play a Duskwight, do it; if you wanna play a Wildwood, do it. I guess just bear in mind that Duskwight seems to be a divergence in the elezen appearance that emerged specifically as a result of living underground for generations, usually in Gelmorra in the Black Shroud. The natural appearance of surface-dwelling elezen families is the appearance that we know as "Wildwood". Wildwood don't actually have to be from a wood; but duskwight do actually have to be from underground, at least ancestrally (it takes more than a generation or two to iron out the differences). As for general fluff on the Garleans, have this loredump that Sounsyy wrote up a while ago (helpfully saved in my bookmarks as, simply, "garlics").
  5. ★ Liuthas Corwell's profile is now completed. It can be viewed on the RPC Wiki here, or on my tumblr here. -- ★ All eight of my Balmung character profiles are now complete. The full roster can be reviewed on the RPC wiki here, or on my tumblr here. -- ★ Added content to the "Linkshells" section of my profile. ★ Updated availability status regarding the "Contact" sections of my profile.
  6. I have an alt, who is a Free Paladin trainee, who I would like to develop and/or play more often. Would there be a spot for him? His name is Liuthas Corwell, but at the moment I'm most often on Aghurlal Qar'akimusun (or, ofc, contactable by PMs). Thank you! ETA: Have received invite; thank you!!
  7. I took it as Alphinaud essentially wanting to at least save one person to make up for his 2.0 screw up parade. He bonded with Estinian a little during the Churning Mists quest, but I took it as him essentially wanting to do right for the first time in what seemed like ages. Initially he hides his insecurity under morally disagreeing with making sacrifices, similar to his persona in 2.0, but I got the impression it was always personal to him. Estinian is not really his friend but rather someone to save. The convenience of the situation aside, I did kinda like Alphinaud achieving a small victory to make up for all his failed plans before. Yeah I very much got the impression it was a just this once, nobody dies thing rather than a "yes you are my best friend in the whole world and I would be personally devastated by your loss (as opposed to by the symbol which your loss would portray)". He seems fond enough of Estinien, in that kind of "yeah he's a jerk but I respect him and we kid around" way. But the fact he decided very early on in Estinien's predicament that no, not this time, this is where the killing stops means that it's important to him in a way that cannot be explained if you look solely at their interpersonal relationship. It's a tonne of baggage that Alphinaud is carrying with him from - I mean honestly I'm gonna say probably from his childhood, given that Louisoix's shadow seems to have this effect on a lot of people... Alphinaud's determination was more a battle-cry for his own self-worth than it was for Estinien. Which is not to say he was totally devoid of caring for Estinien; simply that the intensity with which said care was expressed was not solely a result of their friendship.
  8. Off the top of my head, here's what I would say Limsa's three law enforcement agencies deal with: Mealvaan's Gate Smuggling Tax evasion Falsifying of documents/currency Forgery Possession of contraband (*Broadly speaking, "financial" crimes. If it took place primarily with pieces of paper and sacks of coin, then it's probably a matter for the Gate. Also remember that Vylbrand is an island - the import laws on animals and plants are going to be comparable to those in New Zealand or Madagascar in terms of restrictiveness.) Rogues' Guild (Dutiful Sisters of the Eidelweiss; Upright Thieves; etc...) Theft Embezzlement Possibly burglary? (*Note that what counts as "theft" in Limsa Lominsa is very specific. It has to be something that's stolen from a Lominsan (and by extension it's assumed this also applies to Alliance members and peaceful beastman within the city); and it has to be something that the Lominsan(/etc) in question earned in the first place.) Yellowjackets Assault Arson ...etc. Violent crime, basically. (*So these are your nightwatchmen, "keeping the peace" types. Of the three, they're most comparable to the "regular police guys" on your detective shows who turn up when the excitement is over to mess up your evidence and tell you you've got 3 days to solve the case or you're fired. They even have their own of what I would call plain-clothes PCSOs working near the entrance to the city, hehe. They have a reputation of axeing people first and asking questions later. I would also guess the Yellowjackets are tasked with helping Mealvaan's Gate enforce their writs. The Rogues can, well... enforce their own damn writs.) And all three seem to come down very hard on kidnapping, slavery, trafficking of spoken (and probably arguably beastmen), and false imprisonment; that's a strong theme in both the Sisters and the Gate questchains. Lominsans like their freedom. When it's something bigger (like treason), they seem to work together (see: ROG 30 quest that took me like 5 attempts to complete because I kept dying). -- As far as what happens after the person is caught is concerned, Mealvaan's Gate seem the most likely to move for imprisonment or banishment. The Yellowjackets and the Rogues have both been known to hold, um... let's say "impromptu executions". I'd say the Yellowjackets are more likely to wrongly execute someone immediately after catching them, but it hugely depends on which specific Yellowjackets are on the case - we've seen some who are very keen on their "due procedure". With the Rogues, they do a lot more investigating before they go after the person, but once that pursuit has begun then the person's fate is more or less already sealed and I'd say it's fairly unlikely that they're going to end up in a gaol cell. They seem to like either stringing people up (hog-tying them, hanging from a high place, and letting them wriggle free of their own accord) or "milling" (killing) them depending on the severity of what was done. Theft is usually dealt with by retrieving the stolen goods. Slavery, well... them's how ye get yerself milled. -- I highly recommend playing through the ROG, ACN, and MRD quest chains to get a better handle on what the legal atmosphere is like in Limsa, since it's a bit of an outlier in terms of comparisons to countries like America or England. They only last to level 30 and with full armoury bonus will likely take a day or two at most to complete. (Plus they're fun! Or I think they are anyway. ...ROG and ACN, at least.) One last thing to note is that it's unlikely your character would report directly to the Rogues' guild about any given crime - it is not a public organisation, despite being a law enforcement agency. You'd likely be expected to either report to the Yellowjackets (who may or may not care, depending on who the desk sergeant is that day) or to Mealvaan's Gate, depending on what the crime is. Then, it'd be delegated to the Rogues if necessary from there... assuming the Rogues were not already aware of their own nosy selves. This was sort of a headcanon-y ramble but hopefully something in there was at least interesting.
  9. I love that comic so much, omg. "Special stoneskin pls" has been my way of, during friend groups, ashamedly owning up to the fact I am dying a lot. Yes. I am That Dragoon. Though it's almost exclusively because my PC is shit - I was astonished to watch someone's recording of a Void Ark run and learn that for normal people, if they are out of an AoE by the time the ground indicator disappears, THEY TAKE NO DAMAGE - on my screen I usually have to be out a good .5-1 seconds before it vanishes, or it turns out that the server thinks I was still within it when it went off. Likewise, the ground indicator usually appears .5-1 seconds later than it ought to - most of the time, I simply don't have time between the ground indicator appearing, and disappearing, to move out of the fire. Not without Sprinting (and even then sometimes not), and whether I produce 0 DPS because I have 0 HP or 0 TP is not a choice I really enjoy making. I die a lot. Especially in Heavensward content. My favourite (least favourite) anecdote is the time when I died to every single add wall in the last boss of The Vault, because my FPS had slowed to a crawl and I would go from "no add wall on my screen" to "dead on the floor" in the time it took my screen to refresh. Hello Brink of Death debuff, my old friend; I've come to talk with you again... I've stopped using DF altogether for Heavensward duties because I don't think it's fair to inflict this on strangers. Which has halted my levelling to a crawl (can't use levelling roulette, and sidequests are soul-draining...) but what can you do that doesn't cost £1k of real life money? ...a new computer is now next on my list of planned major expenditures.
  10. Here are some factsheets about the UK government, to those interested: [link] I don't know if Ishgard's houses will be the same as ours. Though if they are, that means we have some splendid real life examples to base things off in terms of how everything can and probably will go horribly wrong. :3
  11. I've seen so, so many different definitions of "heavy RP". And I've seen a lot of definitions of "heavy RP" that are just completely nonsensical to me. In all honesty, I'm semi-convinced that the terms "heavy" and "light" carry no inherent meaning at all when referring to RP, and that people will just apply them as desired to describe people who they perceive as being more/less into, or better/worse at, the hobby than they are... The way I used it in my directory thread was to refer to how often I roleplay and how long/involved my storylines are. No matter what genre the storylines are (domestic vs heroic, action vs romance, etc). But I wouldn't say that being 24/7 IC is particularly common, desireable, or admired - I think I've met one person like that in all my time RPing in MMO's (10 years) and it was weird and, honestly, uncomfortable. Because they wouldn't respond to my whispers except ICly - and OOC communication is important.
  12. This isn't related to roleplay so much, to be honest. But it's about the lore, it's interesting to me, and I thought it might be interesting to you as well. I guess it could have implications on RP as well. I'm interested to hear people's opinions and input, anyway, because this is something I've been discussing with my friends lately and we're all as confused as each other. Now, my understanding of the rules of Hydaelyn are that once someone is dead, they're dead. Once their essence has returned to the Lifestream, there's no way of getting them back (Tam-Tara Hard is a nice example of what happens if you don't pay attention to this) - "true" ghosts appear when someone's spirit fails to join the lifesteam to begin with, as opposed to being brought back from it after the fact. And yet... At several points during questing as the Warrior of Light, we see... apparitions of dead people. Like, dead dead people.
  13. Yeah... for me as an individual, housing is not a gil sink. Because I cannot obtain the opportunity to sink gil into it. I'm not even bothering to aim for a gil total with any sort of haste because I cannot access the opportunity to spend it. This removes the incentive for me to participate in the economy in order to amass gil in the first place, which - I mean, correct me if I'm wrong - I believe is supposed to be the entire point of having money sinks in an MMO. Sure, "not everyone and their mother" should be able to obtain the content in question - but to be a proper money sink, the gating should be the high currency requirement, not what's essentially a "limited edition" system where only a set number of entities per server ever even get a chance to put down the gil... I'm disabled and therefore don't work. I'm the exact kind of "no-lifer" who should be interested in obtaining money-sink content in a game; especially with my love of "if my character had an X, what would it be like?" type content. But I'm not even trying with housing, because obtaining a plot is too unlikely. I don't want to have all that gil just sitting in a retainer not doing anything when I could have spent the time it took to earn it working on my alts, or levelling secondary classes, or roleplaying, or doing literally anything else. It's frustrating because it's this huge avenue for crafting, customisation, community integration, unlocking two fairly sizeable minigames (chocobo stables and gardening), and just plain old having fun... that I'm unlikely to be able to access at all unless someone is very, very kind to me and notifies me ahead of time that they're relinquishing a plot of my desired size and location. Maybe the scarcity is a deliberate design decision and not a technical limitation... but if it is, I don't think it's a design decision I agree with.
  14. Awesome (genuinely). There you go, then! And now I know what to do if I ever start playing on a console. ;D
  15. Do you know your auto-run keybind? Though I imagine if you're on a console, the type of multitasking required to run and type or open your searchinfo menu at the same time is gonna be pretty difficult...
  16. If any FC is relinquishing a Small plot in the Mist area, especially in plots 54-58 (or 24-28)... hit me up? 8)
  17. I think the main thing I'd ask you to bear in mind is that, as it stands, characters might not react well to the summoned creatures. There are three things which I can think of which the average joe might be aware of as "summon-able": carbuncle; voidsent; and primals, and egi of primals. Unless the creatures look like carbuncle, people are potentially gonna be a bit edgy around them...
  18. The first question I've got to ask is: what kind of roleplay do you enjoy? Because suggestions are gonna vary based on whether you prefer action, romance, intrigue, drama... etc etc etc.
  19. My character Aghurlal also takes escort/bodyguard jobs, and if he happened to be assigned to the same job as Yul, he'd definitely confront her before they began. He's usually wary or (verbally) hostile towards other xaela, at least to begin with - so while he's not likely to be that friendly to start off with, it could be interesting to see how it goes. He usually works out of Limsa, but has been known to take jobs that reach the Sultanate as well. I understand if that's something you're not interested in, but feel free to give me a poke if you are! In-game name is Aghurlal Qar'akimusun. Lastly, if you're interested in setting up a wiki page and just want help getting started, I can try and provide pointers. I think it's fairly user-friendly once you get your eye in.
  20. My main character Aghurlal works regularly for the Fishermen's Guild of Limsa Lominsa and the Dutiful Sisters of the Eidelweiss, so feel free to give me a poke if you want them to run into each other on the lower docks or something! My in-game name is Aghurlal Qar'akimusun.
  21. Although I doubt I'd be suitable roleplaying as a full-time teacher, my character Confiance desFerme is a fairly experienced conjurer who's at Mealvaan's Gate for the purpose of learning arcanima. He'd be more than happy to provide pointers in conjury or even lessons on occasion. Feel free to poke me on my main, Aghurlal Qar'akimusun, if you want to sort something out! Also hello, I think we used to know each other in Flight Rising, and also you leave kudos on my ao3 entries sometimes.
  22. Hi I wrote a lot and I'm bad at making it seem like I'm not giving concrete instructions so to set the tone for the post: these are intended as tips from my own personal experience, not You Must Do It This Way Or You Are Wrong! I hope it helps a little.
  23. Eggnog. Anyway, my body is not ready. I am affeared for all my faves (except Thancred; he's probably going to be okay. Probably. Right?). Glad we get to beat up Hraesvelgr, though.
  24. The closest thing Aghurlal has to magic powers is his Echo, and it manifested when he travelled to Eorzea. Like: normal(ish...) man leaves Othard. Has godsawful dreams on the boat over. Congrats, the awful dreams are now visions you have during your waking hours, and you have them unwillingly and seemingly (because you refuse to talk to anyone about what's happening to you) at random! Enjoy your stay! Medic is a conjurer (but not a hearer). She gained this ability because she wanted to help heal people, and Stillglade Fane had just started training adventurers like her, so she took advantage. She found the magic came naturally to her, so she advanced through her training at a decent pace. Caiden's most magical-seeming abilities (the huge majority of her skillset is non-aetherial in nature) are also Echo-based. It started out as "just an intuition", but eventually developed into a clarity and breadth that was highly unusual. I think the first time she realised she should maybe investigate a magical cause behind what she could do - and also the strongest demonstration of her ability to date - was when she successfully not only identified a fake artefact, but also uncovered fruitful leads as to the fraudsters who had created it and the clients who stood to profit from its "discovery", simply by examining the object itself. Let's just say she's not so keen on handling aetherial gear... Confiance began learning conjury at a relatively young age (he showed an interest and his parents encouraged it). Due to his nosy temperament, he ended up being palmed off on a specific tutor. When that went south in a pretty dreadful way, he asked to be permitted leave to study arcanima in Limsa Lominsa. He's been there ever since; his perspective as a former conjurer brings a new dimension to his studies and allows him to provide insights that his arcanima-only peers might have missed. I have other characters as well, but I just woke up... so maybe I'll write about them another time.
  25. This actually seems like something that might be useful for me... I'm trying to level DRK (to 60) and NIN (to 50) for story/RP reasons (respectively) and I'm not confident enough to PuG with either. I can also contribute moderately competent SCH healing for duties under level 50, and "not totally useless" DRG damage for, again, duties under 50. ...not sure what it is about Heavensward content that turns me into a gibbon mashing aimlessly at the keyboard, but there we have it. (Wait - yes, yes I do. It's the fact that if my computer was a human, it would be in its second year of primary school, and therefore it struggles enough with the graphics in newer duties that I can't see ground indicators until it's too late. Oops.) I'll contact one of youse in-game if I can find you, or my IGN is Aghurlal Qar'akimusun (mouthful, I know). ETA: Invite received, thank you!
