1. If I'm reading it right, the second issue of the promo should be out yesterday (11th August): Haven't had a chance to look yet because my parents are out of the country and I rely on them for transport. This also means websites that stock back-issues might have the first promo issue now, too; since shops will have sent their surplus stock back to the warehouse, and that's where back-issue websites get their stock from. Good luck to everyone! (Still shouldn't have to say this about a promo everyone should have a chance at, but there you go...)
2. 12th Sun of the 4th Umbral Moon My dear journal, I find myself wondering just how long is appropriate to wait before one contacts one’s dearly regarded friends. Eorzean customs are very different indeed to those I grew up with, and most unfortunately of all, this is not the manner of custom I am able to ask for advice about without being laughed at. My colleagues already think I am odd enough; and it isn’t as though I have many other friends I can rely on for such matters. I would ask the lady Regal, only I affear that if I rely on her overmuch, it will create something dreadful. Several days ago, I announced my feelings for both the lady Defiant and ser Shirogawa. To my surprise and, ashamedly, overwhelming relief, both of them reciprocated. I am uncertain how it is they feel towards one another - after all, they have only met one another twice all told, and the very last thing I wish to do is pressure either of them into something they don’t feel - but it seems they both hold some measure of admiration for me, at least. Yet I have not spoken to either since then. I do not want to appear clingy, as one of my dear colleagues so endlessly complains of her partner. If only there were a handbook to delineate what Eorzeans consider to be the boundary between “clingy” and “aloof”.
3. hey guys listen i've got a little personality quiz for all of you if a baby GLD says, at the beginning of copperbell NM, that they're fairly new to tanking and apologise for any mistakes they make, do you: A) let them make their own pulls B) run ahead of them constantly and start DPSing before they're even within Shield Lob range A) follow the kill order they're marking, which generally puts AoE-using mobs first, then most damaging to least damaging B) purposefully ignore the kill order and go for whatever order you feel like, usually starting with the mob that deals least damage and has the most health A) attack the same target as the rest of the group, because you're following kill order B) after they give up marking a kill order, ensure every member of the group is DPSing a different target A) run towards the tank if you're being gnawed on by something B) stay rooted to the spot if something starts eating you or, if possible, run out of line of sight of the tank A) when asked to correct simple mistakes, apologise and strive to improve B) when asked to correct simple mistakes, claim you're doing it all on purpose to "teach them to be a better tank" if you answered mostly A, you're a better group member than the ones i just partied with. because protip: at low levels, Flash is meant to deal with the aggro gained on mobs, by the healer, through healing the tank. maybe the aggro from a few DoTs spread around. not the aggro gained on mobs by every single person in the party deciding they don't feel like sharing today and going all-out on a different goddamn monster. like, yeah, i'm gonna struggle to keep aggro if you ignore my kill order! that's why it's there! "learn to use provoke," i hear those B-answerers out there cry - you don't get it until level 22 as GLD and copperbell syncs from 20. jeez.
4. Oh! By the way... If you're like me and have a million alts you're scrambling to level to 30 so you can do this event, please be advised that, while you do need to be actual level 30 to pick up the quests themselves, you can: - Mount an elbstsbtbsbtbsbt for the seasonal FATEs - Receive Faire Vouchers from the seasonal FATEs to spend at the vendor Without being level 30, or completing any seasonal quests, first. The FATEs give a reasonable amount of XP, so you can probably drop by around level 28, do the two FATEs enough times to get all the tokens you could possibly want (plus Cancer in between lmao), hit level 30, do the quests, buy all the items, and go home without any additional post-30 event-related grinding. It'll probably help to join a group when it gets busy because participation credit penalty, but there's usually a PF ad up at prime times anyway.
5. I can only assume they mean the fireworks? For the curious/those that haven't started yet, here is the selection: You get 1 voucher per repeatable quest, 3 for a gold in the first FATE, and 5 for a gold in the second FATE. I worked out today you get 3 for a silver in the second FATE, but I don't know how it scales for the other medals/the first FATE. ETA: 1 token for a bronze in the second FATE. Don't ask.
6. I can't make myself care about using fancy templates for my pages. >_> I did that for my tumblr pages. It took me weeks. I know I could repeat it for the RPC ones, but... Eeeh. EEEEHHHHHHH. CSS is designed for this kind of fancy stuff. Wiki markup... is not. I already knew HTML, so tumblr's CSS was really easy for me to learn; but knowing another wiki markup (I used to admin a WoW RP server wikia) has actually impacted my ability to work with the RPC negatively. There are a thousand tiny differences, and being "so close but so far away" so many times when trying to do something as basic as "add an infobox to my page" (yeah...) is a singularly frustrating experience. Enjoy my flat text pages. Visit my tumblr for anything else.
7. If you mean "summoner" like "summons egis of primals", then your character has to have been present at the defeat of the primal in question in order to summon that egi. For this reason, being able to summon more than one type of egi is probably kind of rare. I say so because I don't know if you intended to include such a thing in your character's backstory, or if you just thought it would be a good way of him venting his excess aether. In that second case, I'd recommend Carbuncle - maybe a custom geometry specifically intended to siphon off extra aether from the target (your character)? If you did intend for him to have defeated Ifrit/Titan/Garuda in the past, then carry on!
8. It's not a thing in canon if that's what you mean; devs have confirmed in interview that Lucia has feelings for Aymeric, but Aymeric isn't aware of Lucia's feelings/doesn't reciprocate. I guess canon Aymeric is kind of "married to his job"..? Don't see a reason why that should stop people having fun shipping it though (My version of this is Thancred/Hilda. I can totally see them sneaking off for quickies in a FWB type of deal >_> )
9. Take your pick! You probably want to filter by Balmung-only, then scroll down to the bottom and set your filters to: Sort by: Last Post / Order: Descending / From: The Beginning.
10. Attending events (where you know everyone else is also there to do the same kind of RP you are) and joining linkshells (where you know everyone else is also there to talk about the same kind of things you are) have both made my incidence of roleplay shoot right through the roof. I can find something most nights if I want to, between my friends list, my linkshells, and the RP calendar that Virella linked.

Breaking-in

You're a Xaela, right? I think this is most of what you need to know to get started: 1. Flavour from the character creation screen. Tl;dr: "free-spirited vagrant" is the Xaelan archetype, so you're in luck! 2. Naming conventions. Tl;dr: you know Mongolian, right(?) 3. Geographical origins. Tl;dr: your character probably isn't from Eorzea originally. I think that's everything that's... important. Everything else is fluff and flavour that you can have excuses for your character not to know either.
12. Yes. Fixed. I'd just woken up. x_x -- All the first story told me is how bloody lucky Aymeric is to have friends who are willing to risk it all for him... I mean, if the Archbishop could "disappear" the previous Archimandrite, what's to say he couldn't have done the same to Aymeric if so inclined? And probably would, had people not intervened at the Vault?
13. Yeah, you have to be online at the same time to do basically anything in this game (add to linkshells, add to friends list, and so on). I look forward to seeing you in the linkshell though!
14. First one: [What Remains of a Knight] Second one: [Words, Deeds, Beliefs] Third one: [A Malm in Her Shoes] Fourth one: [Thoughts Unspoken]
15. Haurchefant is Heavensward's Thancred in terms of fighting fangirls, isn't he? I've had someone get genuinely aggressive at me over me shipping Thancred with Character A instead of Character B. I swear to Hydaelyn, the most pointless thing...
16. I-I forget. Until I need to use Dark Dance or whatever it's called. And then I turn it on. And then it drops off when I hit 0 MP. And I forget. Again. This is why I don't tank for strangers. OTL
17. Aghurlal is a career infiltrator and spy, and has been since he was way too young. He's ICly heavily involved with the Dutiful Sisters of the Eidelweiss, so it'd be easy to pick up his services and/or obtain his interest in meetings and the like by advertising within the "convent".
18. 3rd Sun of the 4th Umbral Moon Yesterday was awful and today was quite charming indeed. I was interrupted quite kindly by the lady Regal yesterday. She is Defiant’s older sister, and had come to retrieve an item she had left in my tender care during Aethertide’s move. We ended up speaking for rather a lot longer than intended, and… she came dangerously close to being aware of some things which I would rather no soul were aware of whatsoever. I only hope that she does not share her pseudo-discoveries with her sister. But today I began the process of returning to work. I had to attend a physical examination at the Gate, and although it will be a little while yet for my limp to entirely disappear, they assured me that I shall be cleared for fieldcraft leves at my old grade within just a few days. I must admit, it’s an entirely surreal process - in Ul’dah, it was very much your own business whether you were fit for guildleves or not. Had we a similar institution in Othard, I can only imagine it would have been the same. One would have assumed pirates to be similarly lax… and yet it turns out there is much legislation and more about “workplace safety”! T’is quite absurd indeed. I can understand the grading system for battlecraft leves, but it seems quite unusual indeed for fieldcraft. Nevertheless, perhaps that is why I am not responsible for the creation of such legislation, and am instead subject to it. I shall remain content in the knowledge that I should be back at the levemete - and my other guilds, as well - within the week. “Workplace safety”. Ridiculous.
19. It's no biggie!! I remember moving; I think something like that would have been the very last thing on my mind
20. 1. Alts. I have lots of alts I can go to when I'm like, "Ugh, my W character wouldn't go to this event-- oh, but I have an X I can take!" or "I'm so bored of playing an X, I wanna try a Y for today!" or "the Y RP scene is really dead tonight, I wanna play a Z or something until my friends come back tomorrow!" or "So-and-so's story is pretty stagnant right now, but someone's advertising one that's perfect for Whatsisname!". 2. Knowledge of good ways to shake things up without, like, killing anyone off, lol. Any resources online that work for "unblocking writers' block" will usually work for this. I like the one where you start off by listing everything that won't happen next, and in doing so, often end up with - either by process of elimination, or hmm, actually that could happen if - your actual inspiring solution. NaNoWriMo dares might be fun, if you can find some that don't assume you're solo-writing. 3. Knowing how to recognise burnout. The best cure for burnout is to recognise it early, before the "doing thing = misery" association really begins to burn itself into your mind, and take a break. This is where having ideas for how to shelve or fridge your character without permanently taking them out of the equation can be useful. While you're taking a break, it's generally best to focus on something that's nothing to do with RP on your main character. Get that PvP mount you always wanted, or roll an alt on a new server, or something; until RP becomes something you miss and look forward to doing again, and not a dreadful chore. Because at the end of the day, this is a hobby we do for fun. Whatever you do, as Qwynn said, make sure you communicate OOCly with your group. Especially if your character is important to the storyline. Obviously, it's a dick move to leave them high and dry, even if it is important to your enjoyment of the game. But talk to them anyway, even if taking a break isn't on your table of considerations! Especially if you feel bored or frustrated with how the storyline is progressing! They might agree with you and want to change how things are going, or they might have no idea you weren't enjoying it and agree to redirect things, or anything. You won't know until you tell them.
21. It is! I'm also able to give invites - I'm usually on Aghurlal Qar'akimusun, but I also have alts; Telluric Medic, Caidenden Caiden, Liuthas Corwell, Cinu'a Malaguld, Shuukami Kanshi, Y'trinity Taqa, and Confiance Desferme. I can log on now if you're still about? O: ETA: I've invited them now! :3
22. M-- More... FATEs...?! @_@ (For real, though, the poses look cute as hecke and I look forward to seeing what past items are available!)
23. I seem to recall that there's supposed to be an attendant nearby that you pay?? Can't remember where I read that though x_x I mean presumably it's possible to tell where someone's just TP'd from something something aetheric signatures something something lingering resonance, but it seems like it'd be complicated and potentially expensive to make sure every single attendant had the ability to tell... Maybe that's why there's a minimum fee of 100g for using any aetheryte from anywhere (fee reduction buffs notwithstanding). ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
24. I ship Thancred x Emotional Stability. Um, oh, no, wait, I meant Thancred x Aghurlal. Man! That's totally the opposite of what I just said. My bad, you guys.
25. You misunderstood me again - I'm saying of course a normal mortal can't communicate with an Elemental through the Elementals' "language", because doing so hurts them. So you need someone with special skills to be able to translate. You didn't read how I clarified my meaning of "intent" - I mean what you are intending to do at this moment. As in. "I am intending to strike my fingers against the plastic." Not "I am intending to communicate with you." It's a bit more complicated than that, but that's the basic jist of what I'm trying to talk about. And yes. That's what I said. They seem aware that there are lots of mortals, and are capable of differentiating "X mortal is more similar to Y mortal than Z mortal is" when they try (see: 3.0 quest). But that doesn't mean they're interested in concepts like individuality and nuance. It's really difficult to talk about this when you misread or misunderstand 50% of what I'm writing, I'm sorry. x_x
