  1. I don't know the exact name either of the LS you mean, but I've seen one fitting the first description advertising in Party Finder fairly regularly; so maybe keep an eye on that and see if it pops up again? So sorry I can't be more help, and best of luck!
  2. Yeah. My ideal system would have tickboxes for: - allow everyone - allow people on my friends list - allow people in the same free company as me - allow people from linkshell 1 (...) - allow people from linkshell 8 Buuuut. TvT not likely to happen.
  3. There's a "guest access" toggle feature just like any other private chamber. They are, essentially, private chambers; but costing an extra 200k for the stability and permanency of not being attached to an FC or subject to auto-demolition. Yet. Still waiting to see if they'll go back on that one.
  4. I keep track of my alts' progress using an extensive spreadsheet: It looks scary but it's actually just an exercise in note-taking. The reason I do this is because I find it difficult to remember everything I'm doing on, you know, ten characters (eight of whom are on Balmung). Especially when it comes to repetitive quests like seasonal turn-ins. But... I often get bored of what I'm doing on my main character and want to do something else. Having it all written down in a clear format exactly what I'm supposed to be doing next on each character: Makes it much easier to decide what to do in a given day if I'm fed up of looking at my main's face, since I can easily flip through the sheets and find something that doesn't seem boring to do. I try not to fuss about which alts are "behind" others in-game progress-wise. As of a couple of weeks ago, all my Balmung alts are level 30 with mounts; before that, all of them were about level 23 because I'd progressed their MSQ until it was time for them to pick up their retainers. I consider that a reasonable "resting point" and it's what I'm aiming for on my non-Balmung alts - once they're there, I won't feel bad about leaving them until I feel like taking them higher. At that level they have the capability to sell stuff, 350 extra inventory slots, and can travel most anywhere in ARR if I'm careful with how I approach aggressive mobs. Doubly so if you push them to Sylph-Management and do your first GC hunting log entry for a mount. After that, I see additional PvE as a means to two ends - additional fun, and additional fashion. If levelling a given alt won't achieve either of those things, it tends to get left... since my alts exist primarily to give me a variety of faces to go to IC parties and the like with. While they probably can't camp out in the wilderness of Northern Thanalan for a roleplay, there's plenty of people who are brand new to the game and can't do that, either, so most RP venues are friendly to the low-level player. I've been on a few RP outings with most of my alts and haven't struggled overmuch to get to where I want to be yet. As the others say, keeping track of which of your alts knows who and how knowledgeable they are about other PCs' storylines is another matter - I recommend judicious use of the "friends list group" function, which I utilise to label RP friends based on whether I've met them ICly on that character yet or not... and maybe more note-taking. Or perhaps that last part's just me.
  5. I landed room #4 (yes, really) in ward 9 main division, Mist. It's going to be a bar slash secret meeting place. I fully intend to hold regular events, both of the bar-kind and the secret-meeting-kind. You guys I am hype.
  6. Did some RP on Discord, made like three things in photoshop and am now posting abridged logs from the RP I did last night. Set my alarm for 10 and am going to bed round about now.
  7. Don't ask him what happened yesterday. He will just lie to you.
  8. Meeting went very well yesterday; we had our highest attendance yet and at least one new addition to the linkshell! Plus this announcement: Regarding the Illegal Magitek Trade plot collaborated with Maelstrom Command «FLEET» Word from «FLEET» leadership is that this plot WILL be continuing, but it shall be after a short break of a few weeks real-time. Feel free to do smaller events as dictated ICly, but no major discoveries should arise from these events, and any research or creation of related devices should be surreptitiously delayed until the plot resumes OOCly. Any discoveries should be saved until «FLEET» leadership gives the go-ahead, which is currently estimated to be some time in mid to late October. Furthermore, we have confirmation from «FLEET» leadership that they are fully intending to involve us in their coming plot on said illegal magitek trade, so please look forward to it! If you have any questions regarding this, please contact Ojene Suinuet!
  9. Dear Svara FATE tank: You are a dark knight, not a caffeinated squirrel. SIT. STILL. (Context: I was playing NIN, which is the class which, at my current level, has exactly one positional, at the end of a 3-skill combo. I don't think I managed to hit this positional once during the 75% I actually got to fight Svara properly for.) And for the love of all that is holy DO NOT reset the thing at 25% and 6 minutes to go because you got a widdle scawed and thought you might have to be raised by someone. Maybe using your defensive cooldowns would have helped. Even just one. If I could revoke your soul crystal access, I would. The icing on the shitty cake was that after the FATE inevitably timed out due to this DRK's single-handed incompetence, the boss continued to attack me, while invuln, for about 30 further seconds. So that was fun.
  10. Try me: 1) vivacious young man with a secret; tradesman by day, rogue by night 2) stoic no-nonsense healer in a love-hate relationship with the Elementals 3) kind-natured orphan, estranged from his twin sister by political differences 4) ""archaeologist"" (tomb robber) with more of a nose for trouble than is strictly profitable 5) peppy huntress who keeps getting distracted from her job by pretty girls 6) sardonic demonic who isn't actually demonic, they just want to seem scary so people won't touch them 7) sad dad with a drinking problem, wants to find his son 8) smart-ass mage with too many puns and not enough years left in the world 9) child abuse survivor who turns to body mods and blowing stuff up as a coping mechanism 10) child soldier who becomes a mercenary with the strictest code of conduct she can still turn a profit on 11) noble's daughter, actually mixed species, who struggles with the decision to continue hiding her family secret - i.e. herself - after they're all killed in a war 12) overly eager apprentice to #2, might actually be a six-year-old girl 13) PTSD-riddled veteran who cannot bring herself to admit the war is over 14) wide-eyed teenager way in over her head with some pretty nasty magic This was the size of my roster of WoW alts... sans a handful of characters who were pretty WoW-specific. All of them had fully fleshed-out backstories and all of the ones listed would be completely portable to XIV if I had the room. Only 1 through 8 made it. Some of them have threads in common, but I think if you picked any 8+ characters, no matter who was writing them, that would be the case. By that logic, it's not worth there being more than a few character slots on the server full stop, right? Because some of them would be similar to each other? I wanna be able to make my own bad decisions, okay??
  11. This week's physical meeting is tomorrow, 24th September, 9pm UTC! If you're involved in the bombing plot please remember that there's another event related to the plot, organised by Maelstrom Command, later in the same day, at midnight UTC / 8pm EST. Keep in touch with Maelstrom Command leadership with regards to that. And another reminder that we have a discord server; please be in touch with me if you would like an invite to it! Thank you!

  13. {Role-playing} is finally in the auto-translate dictionary. At last, I can shave down my search info by one precious character.
  14. Being present at the death of a Primal is one of the few... no, in fact, I think it's the only part of my OOC achievements that made it into my RP Balmung storyline. It was a weaker manifestation, and he still had to get his ass rescued, but he was there. It's implied that the strength of the manifestation depends on how many crystals are involved and (minor spoilers) what exact ritual was used (end spoilers), so it's probable that the beast tribes can't always scrounge up the resources to summon an EX version of their resident god.
  15. I'd rather lend credence to people who are dedicated to telling a good story than to people who happened to be in the right place at the right time and to have a solid raid group, 2 years ago, before I even played the game myself. Basically. I do not value raid progress, for any purpose. Not for me, not for others. I don't see it as something that's important or that should be specially respected. I don't find it enjoyable. I don't admire those who do it. It's just a difference in preference, and they're not "more worthy" of admiration just because what they pour their time and effort into happens to yield in-game achievements. IMO, they shouldn't be able to "transfer" stuff they did that gets them good reputation in the raiding community to get the same ego-stroking in the RP community as well. I roleplay. I do so, in part, because I value roleplay. I value creativity and work and time and effort poured into bringing a character concept to life. People trying to bring non-roleplay-related stuff into it comes across as grasping at straws because they're insecure in what they're trying to portray. IMO, if you have to reach to something outside the scene and go "no, really, look, you HAVE to go along with what I'm RPing, because I did this thing that's totally unrelated to anything to do with RP", you've already lost my attention. If you're RPing it with skill, finesse, and humility, then the question of whether you're "for legit" shouldn't even have to come up. I'm aware I'm being quite harsh here, and it's because I had bad experiences with thoroughly arrogant, unpleasant people in the WoW community who thought that being realm-first raiders on a really tiny realm with no PvE community meant that the RPers hanging around should be kneeling at their feet. If someone wants to RP a character who others kneel at the feet of, I'd rather they build that gravitas through roleplay.
  16. I honestly still just think it's arrogant to assume yourself more suited to playing a certain role because of something you did that's completely unrelated to your skill as a roleplayer. T13 world first doesn't magically make you amazing at roleplaying a war hero. And if you're spending so much time putting effort and practice into world-first-style raiding, then the time spent roleplaying is necessarily lesser than someone who spends the majority of their game-time on it. Here's a hypothetical something I'd respect more: A person takes the time and effort to assemble a group of adventurers who might have the in-character skill to enter the Binding Coil and investigate the recent disturbances. Over the next few weeks, they do regular RP sessions covering their adventures into the Coils, filming video or posting stories about them for others to share in. They take care to ensure the story is well-crafted and compelling, and that it has a personal spin on it to differentiate it from what the developers provided for them, while still remaining true to the heart of the original storyline. After a lot of in-character, on-screen time and effort, they finally arrive at their destination, and although some of their members faulter once or twice, they eventually pull through as a group and emerge victorious. Man, if I'd seen something like that documented on the forums and one of the people approached me in-game, I'd totally roll with it - because I'd admire their creativity and dedication to roleplay. Far moreso than someone trying to use out-of-character achievements to influence in-character events.
  17. Well yeah, but no moreso than if my friend who has never touched a PvP game in their life also came out with a character who's a combat pro. If they play the character concept well, I could not give a single lonely toss if they have the OOC achievement to back it up or not.
  18. RP is my priority. I don't enjoy and am not good at gameplay. On the contrary, I put a lot of time and effort and thought and love into developing my characters and trying (sometimes failing, sometimes succeeding) to make them compelling and interesting. Does that mean I should be limited to playing poor civilians with no combat experience, even if I think I have a good idea for & the roleplay skills to pull off a character who falls outside of that? Because I can't PvP, don't have the energy to devote to realm-first raiding, and have a disability that means I'm bad with numbers? If someone's done those things, was inspired to roleplay by them, and incorporates them into their story, I don't have a problem with that. But lording themselves as "more legitimate" than someone without the achievements in question comes across as arrogant, mean, and - in some cases I had in WoW - kinda like, "oh well I'm better than all of you at roleplay because I've got this world first achievement" when the person doesn't even roleplay regularly.
  19. Ohmygod I have only had 1 experience with that in FFXIV so far but it was hilarious and over the most arbitrary thing - I had described my character's face "going red" because he was embarrassed; Snide Thought Emote Guy emoted several times insisting that my character's skin was "already red" and therefore that my emote was incorrect. (My dude's skin is brown, btw, unless you have a really weird monitor colour balance.) He repeatedly attempted to imply this through his Snide Thought Emotes and I repeatedly ignored him. He eventually sulked off, presumably to greener redder pastures. My friend whispered me to ask how the RP was going, and I mentioned this incident to them. It turned out that Snide Thought Emote Guy had actually been kicked relatively recently from an RP FC they knew... for generally being a pillock. At least he made it easy to identify him as such, I guess!
  20. Yes, you should be able to. It looks like they work the same way as private chambers - guest access can be granted but you cannot co-own it with anyone. I think there could be plenty improvements given to the guest access settings, but there are dozens of more important improvements to housing in general that I'd rather be made first. x_x
  21. I'm gonna have to grab an example from my old fandom for that one - I RP'd the lore character Prince Wrathion, who was fairly prominent, had a fleshed-out backstory, and three major "MSQ" chains to his name; but I also roleplayed his bodyguards, Left and Right. Canonically, those two barely even have speaking roles. They're just sort of there, behind him, constantly. Sometimes they threaten you if you try to talk to them. That's the only... characterisation, I guess, you get for them. But you can already infer from that, alone, that they're very serious, business-orientated women. So something that portrays them as discerning and sensible is going to be more in-character than something that portrays them as silly or flirty. They wear different uniforms than the rest of his servants - a uniform that happened to match that of the NPCs at Wrathion's old home, Ravenholdt. So you can infer they're probably from Ravenholdt (not new recruits that Wrathion made since he left). But Left is an orc and Right is a human; races that don't usually co-habit. Ravenholdt is historically human, yet it had some involvement in the Orcish slave-trade that used to frequent the area. So maybe Left is native after all - a freed slave, or the child of one. Or maybe she joined after all that was over. Maybe Left grew up there and Right is new. The point is, you can still infer something about their backstory just from the simple matter of what clothes they're wearing, IF you are paying the right sort of attention. When they're guarding Wrathion in-game, if you watch them for a while, sometimes another random NPC from Wrathion's organisation will come up to Left and they'll chat for a bit. When their conversation is over, Left will point, the other guy will salute and walk off, and she'll go back to her post. Right remains vigilant over Wrathion the whole time; so you can infer that they have different job priorities. Left is probably in some sort of position of authority over the rest of Wrathion's servants, while Right's main job is to protect the Prince. You get the principle - it depends highly on the exact NPC and the exact type of setting you're dealing with, but most developers can't resist putting little easter eggs or clues in, even with NPCs who could easily be throw-aways. It's true to say that the closer they are to "MSQ" the more this is the case... but ofc in a canon-heavy environment, most of the characters people pick will want to be close to MSQ anyway, because otherwise everyone else all knows each other IC already and you have to "break in" or find an excuse and put all the extra work in that the other people around you don't. There's a certain amount of "natural selection" against more obscure NPCs in canon-heavy environments... ...and I think the opposite goes for canon RPers in OC-heavy environments, where picking an obscure NPC gives them more of a chance to fit in with the highly personal and customisable environment that OC RP tends to create. Or that's - like I say - my experience, anyway! I'm sure other people (and those from other fandoms, or those who RP canons in-game as opposed to the website-based canon RP I'm used to... i.e. most people reading this thread lol) will have other perspectives.
  22. To answer the "what's the appeal" question, it's a matter of what you're looking for when you RP. As I mentioned before, while I have never (and do not ever wish to) roleplay a canon character in-game, I've run a few canon RP blogs on Tumblr in my old fandom. You get a very clear litmus for whether you're roleplaying your character ""right"" or not. When you're doing OC RP, this is very wishy-washy and subjective, and what's "right" is largely down to what the people around you feel like. If you're the kind of person who likes to cut-and-dry know whether you're correct, then essentially having a "brief to fill" (canon information to match) and refer back to when you're uncertain of yourself, can be satisfying. And being told "you're the closest to canon I've met" or "you play the character really effectively" is immensely satisfying, too. That's not something you can really get in the same way in OC RP, since there's no objective litmus to test your RP against. When you make thoughtful additions or deviations, especially if they're canon-compatible or closely within the spirit of canon, then that's where you get to exercise your creativity while still being validated as "close to canon". Stuff like fleshing out parts of backstory which are vague in canon - you get to make up whatever you want. But, if it's something that ties in bits of trivia about how the character later develops and provides explanations for things which canonically have still been left vague, then it'll be praised higher by others than, say, if you make up something completely off-the-wall that doesn't really have much of a tie-in to anything. And stuff like throwing your character into a totally different situation than they've ever been seen in, in canon, before... and still having people go "yes, this character is recognisably [name] and you're playing them really well". And yes, the appeal is highly based off validation from other people, at least in my experience. (I'm sure someone else has a different experience.) Which is why I don't really understand the appeal of approaching people who haven't even consented to roleplaying with your interpretation of the character... of course they aren't going to appreciate it! Jeez.
  23. 15 hours late with starbucks Doing impromptu Binding Coil clears (T1-5) tonight, tues 20th september 2016. Copy/paste from my tumblr post: we start gathering at the time stated (11pm UTC/midnight BST) to start no more than 1 hour later, at midnight UTC/1am BST. If we don't have group comp by this time (1 tank/1 healer at 60 + others) then we will postpone - These are cinematic clears which is to say we will complete turns 1 to 5, in order, at a relaxed pace and with time to watch cinematics in situe. Expect it to take at least an hour, but no more than two. (Someone else from the linkshell is more than welcome to organise clears-for-clears’-sake (i.e. T5/T9/T13 only); please don’t feel like you’d be treading on my toes if you did so!) - THIS GUIDE has some basic strats, but if someone comes along who knows what to do then that’s better. We also need at least 1 person who knows their way around Turn 3 (lol) or we’ll just get lost together. - We need at least 1 tank at 60 and 1 healer at 60; other than that we can cheese it - just be 50 or above and have Binding Coil of Bahamut unlocked before we begin. If we run out of space in the party, I already have my clears, so I will drop out to make room. - If we get far enough and we all still feel like continuing, we might go on to T6 and beyond. We’ll take a group vote after we clear 5. I'm also planning to keep prodding at this over the next few days/weeks, to get people clears for all three coils if possible, in a relaxed learning environment (rather than the "I am definitely being carried" and/or "screaming, screaming, screaming" environments that PF provides). Survey is here if you're at all interested in future clears of Coil and I'll try to give more notice than 1 day next time.
  24. okay okay I finally have one for each of my alts Aghurlal Qar-aKimusun man murders entire family, becomes hero. what a role model! Telluric Medic literally anyone: “so i was thinking–” telluric medic: “that is a bad idea.” Caidenden Caiden third-gen immigrant develops superpowers, somehow isn’t burned as witch Liuthas Corwell orphan saves lives with the power of love Cinu-a Malaguld did you know you can win back your estranged son just by stalking him across two continents Shuukami Kanshi Y'Trinity Taqa oh no, my family is scattered after the calamity! i want to make life better for them again! better take off to a foreign country and bring my chances of never seeing them again up to almost 100% Confiance des Ferme voidsent are bad. don’t do voidsent
  25. I think the only thing I'd reasonably ask for is don't try to get them on patch day if you already have a house? Like... after the initial rush we can see how many (if any) are left over. We can see how the addition of new apartments to each building works. We can make an informed decision of what to do based on our particular brand of alt-itis or the particular idea we had for an apartment vs existing house. Leave the patch-day rush to people who've never got to play with owning property in the housing system before? If it is indeed that we won't have to worry about availability, then it won't be much skin off your nose to wait for a week or two.
