Square Enix's attention to detail and proof to their precision

Recommended Posts

I have always maintained that Square Enix are extremely precise in how they present their world to us, and the lore within it. This goes to the finest details as well, such as how they dress up their NPCs, down to their race and to their clothes. The proof in the pudding came to me today, when we witnessed this display for Littles Ladies' Day.

I'm near enough 100% on this, but the reason they are wearing AF2 armour and not AF1 armour? Because if you smalltalk Rowena and select 'Vintage equipment', she'll explain that the AF2 armour she sells to adventurers are in-universe all replicas. The AF1 armour is only given to the Warrior of Light or worn by ranking Sultansworn officers in-universe (insofar as the proscribed lore goes, to put aside the roleplayer-friendly version). It would make sense these dolls would be put in replica gear and not the real thing. This is further supported by the fact that the three swords all use the 'Unfinished Curtana' model. If they put down actual Curtanas, that would imply Master had to go to the lengths that the Warrior of Light went to in getting their relic...which wouldn't make sense.

I thought it was neat that Square Enix goes to the same lengths that we players do in the area of overanalysis and dissection.

(I didn't figure that this related directly to RP moreso than it did FF in general, so I hope this forum is okay ^^)

As for your observations, while that would seem like they were not being too heedless with their previously declared lore, these AF2 "replicas" are only different in appearance. I don't see why a replica of the AF1 couldn't be made to be honest, haha. Though your point about the sword certainly stands to an extent.

Though again... I still doubt anyone wanting to honour the First Paladins' memory would use such cheap materials and, instead, would make the blade from some form of crystal? Anything fancy and nice to look at.

Albeit maybe I am overanalysing!

HAHAHAHAHAHA I love it when my theories turn out right. Totally called Durandal and Joyeuse being the other two blades.

They're a package deal. I love my legendary weapons, so for them not to have the other blades be named Durandal and Joyeuse would make me extremely disappointed.

You know, the AF1 is also just worn-out AF2. So they could be wearing AF2 because that's what it was intended to look like.

And it's even said in the Relic Reborn quest. Our relics are all replicas.

I think he just meant that our replica Curtanas were made to look like the real deal through a lot of hardship whereas these decorative ones didn't go past the basics assuming they used similar methods, for obvious reasons.

Also, is AF1 really a worn-out AF2? It seems odd that the Sultansworn would wear something that gave them a "dishevelled" appearance.

At least from the WHM quests, yes. ...you basically get super-hand-me-downs.

SCH and SMN I believe, are made from old designs meant to resemble the originals.

MNK is literally hand-me-downs, as you get the shirt off what's-his-name's back.

WAR is hand-me-downs.

I have no finished DRG, BRD and NIN, and am unable to answer those.

This leaves PLD, which....could be debatable. It could just be that coloring has changed from Thorne to Ul dynasties, as shiny armor wouldn't stay that shiny/consistent if it were all hand-me-downs. It does still lend to the idea that AF1 is old/based off "originals", although -our- AF2 armors would be considered remakes of originals.

But now, if we consider that the AF2 tokens drop in dungeons, that could add another layer of complexity I'll just call a game mechanic.

Regarding paladin AF:

#9 Jenlyns Needless to say, I am more determined to track him down than ever before. While I continue my investigation, I have a trial for you. I want you to seek the gallant armor, the legendary raiments worn by generations of the finest soldiers of the Sultansworn.

#10 Jenlyns In accordance with Sultansworn tradition, the set that would be yours has been scattered across southern Thanalan. Each piece has been locked within a coffer, which will be guarded by two men. You must best the Sultansworn themselves if you are to claim their armor.

It's quite literally a test. He's preparing to bring you in on a dangerous mission to capture a monetarist spy; You're being forcibly called up in the ranks. The men you beat for the coffers serve as guards. They're only there to make sure your swordplay is on par.

It's "legendary raiment" which leads me to believe that it's just... fancier. It's a tradition, so it's likely all officers of a certain caliber are put to the test. It's also likely each piece isn't old, just crafted to resemble the original.

If I recall correctly, DRG's gear is the stuff the guy training you used to wear. BRD discarded his after plot and you're recollecting it. And NIN is a set of gear that is supposed to be for you as a reward for completing your training.

On-topic, I'm assuming all three recreations are using the unfinished Curtana because it's easier for Rowena and Gerolt to reproduce than an actual relic, far easier than trying to recreate Joyeuse and Durandal from nothing, and more authentic than just using your everyday average sword.

Because AF2 is easier than AF+1. ...and for newer players it's "i90 token gear I get from some dungeons in Hard Mode Duty Roulette". Myth tomes are but a myth to the newbies. :P

"Token gear", then. "Antique gear". Anything would be infinitely better than AF2, because this...

Actually, the SMN AF is excavated from Saint Conach's Find. So, really bloody old hand-me-downs.

I would just say they've seen some times.

I mean really, we're all wearing some hand me down or old shit unless we crafted it ourselves or it's Rowena stuff.

Allagan stuff? Old as shit.

WoD? ... Possible it's not old.

LotA? OLD

Of course we know it's not AF2. ...but it's basically nitpicking a name. A bad choice of words because the "unofficial" designation is more common than the "official" designation.

In my own headcanon, all the drops we get are re-tailored, but modern versions inspired by whatever instance we return from. Like Coil, enough adventurers brought tattered remains of old Allagan clothing so that tailors got an idea of what it might have looked like and made it. And now because everyone is obsessed with everything Allagan, it's highly fashionable. And like WoD? I mean... it's not like demons and voidsent wear clothes. So just inspired pieces.

Cuz... a silk robe isn't gonna survive 5,000 years through earthquakes, great floods, freezes, and what all and still be wearable. The damn thing would just disintegrate in your hands if you picked it up.

Also that said, WTF Eorzeans have no sense of history. No wonder the Sharlayans left in a huff. I mean, we dig up some 5,000 year old piece of history and wear it to battle or we destroy it (thank you desynth). Sharlayans are all probably screaming:

That's where it comes from, though, and I'm not even just poking fun. Artifact armor in FFXI became shorthand as AF, and when Dynamis came out and dropped "upgraded" recolored versions they became known as AF2. It was all job-specific armor that was highly sought after, and in some cases so exceedingly rare that if you saw someone wearing something specific (RDM/BLM hat, THF hands, PLD body) you knew you were looking at someone who was in a good group.

So yeah. AF2 because "Dynamis relic gear" doesn't abbreviate as well.
