  1. I've often wondered if fictional characters make appropriate ethical role-models for adults. A lot is said of 'role models' for young people in fiction, be they in soap operas or books, but there's rarely talk about whether it's right for adults to turn to created people in fiction for moral guidance. This is why the concept of 'Fiction Lag' is so interesting to me. If I play games involving virtuous characters, will I subconsciously be moved to act in real life in an accordingly virtuous way? Is courage contagious between a fictional person and a real one? If I were to role-play a dishonest character, would it nudge me toward more duplicitous behaviour in my every day dealings with people? Perhaps as role-players we are more susceptible to Fiction Lag because we not only empathise with our characters, we actively seek to get inside their heads to act them out. We're all aware that personality transference can happen from player to PC, but what about the other way around? maybe i should like curb bryn's racism a bit idk
  2. Congrats on your 1 year anniversary from Aeon FC! KinRP are good folks, and I hope we can play together again soon.
  3. I'm not ruling it out. But it would only happen once Bryn's long-term story is resolved. There's too much story to go as it stands, and I'm terribly fond of her. So it wouldn't be for a long time. Most perma-deaths come when people grow bored of their characters, I think. It's a difficult thing to part with a character you still love.
  4. This was good fun, I'm just sorry I couldn't stay for longer. Thanks for running it!
  5. Hello all, Like many of us here at the RPC, I just love the character Wiki. It's endlessly useful for forging character connections, meeting new people, striking up organic RP or just learning interesting things about other peoples' characters. If you haven't used it, I thoroughly recommend it. One feature in particular that I love is the 'Recent Changes' link. This allows you to view all of the character pages that have been created or edited recently. It's really useful for keeping up with what's going on with other people's PCs and also for spotting new characters so that you can track them down in-game and give them a formal, organic RP welcome. Many of us put a lot of time and effort into our wiki pages ( guilty...), and that means a lot of edits. The unfortunate downside of this is that if you edit your page lots of times in succession, you flood the recent changes page with your own edits, and push the edits of others further down the page. To prevent this, while editing your wiki you can use the 'show preview' button at the bottom of the edits window: This will allow you to view the changes you've made, without committing to them and actually editing your page. If you're concerned about your browser crashing mid-edit and losing what you've been working on (Tip: when I'm working on a big edit, I copy paste my changes into a Google doc. I love you, Google docs. ; ;), there's another option: Saving your wiki page as a 'minor edit' until you're satisfied with your final edit allows people viewing the recent changes page to select 'Hide minor edits' at the top of the page, and thus remove edit spam. And that's it! Remember, only YOU can prevent edit page hogging and help me stalk characters I like and help maintain an effective and efficient character wiki!
  6. Alright, I'm curious. I'm interested to see how I can help out.
  7. Hi, and welcome! Firstly; oh my Twelve, that little animal (Pixel, I'm guessing?) is adorable. I've only lived on Balmung, but I here that it's the more populated and active of the RP servers. I can definitely confirm that there's plenty of RP. You can find info on lore and naming conventions here. This forum is a good way to find people, make connections and friends! Begin by perusing the linkshell list, and see if you can find a group you like the look of. Alternatively, hang out in RP spots. The Quicksand (adventurer's guild) in ul'dah is one of the more active RP spots on the server. This Reddit subforum may help you with your RAF issue.
  8. I have caught myself on numerous occasions mid-way through saying the following: "Anyroad." "By the by." "Aye." "Och."
  9. Brynhilde

    Hullo!

Welcome, Brendt. Good to have you with us.
  10. Hey Tera, welcome to the RPC! Feel free to track down Brynhilde Wulf for some RP.
  11. Hey Banquo, and welcome!
  12. Like Averill said, typically you'll have the best luck making characters on Balmung early morning EST / late morning GMT. Good luck!
  13. Hey, all. It's really encouraging to see other Europeans about on Balmung and keen to find RP, but it's also saddening to hear that some are moving away out of frustration. I was previously unaware that this was happening, too. Because we Europeans are a small proportion of the population of Balmung, I think when linkshells and FCs advertise themselves as both North American and European, it's kind of assumed that the Europeans are a minority of that group and will consequently lose out to the North Americans when it comes to event scheduling. I don't know about other NA/EU FCs, but in my own we try to schedule events that are convenient in both time zones. As it turns out, we've ended up with a membership who are mostly active during EU times anyway, which is nice. But anyway, there seems to be a general sense here that: It's difficult to meet fellow Europeans for RP, Events made by and open to Balmung's general community are sometimes exclusionary to Europeans due to being created and hosted by those in non-European timezones, There aren't many European RP LS/FC options out there, There is perhaps a lack of communication and organisation between European players and RP groups. If these points are the broad sentiment going on here, then I definitely agree. I've felt the occasional loneliness of the European player on Balmung before, too. I imagine a lot of us have, at some point. The question is; what can we do about that? In my opinion, I think that if we pull together and put a little effort in, we can really improve the lot of Europeans on our server. There are of course resources already in place that we can use, such as those listed in Nebb's list. But perhaps there's more we can do. Do we feel that a European-specific sub forum here on the RPC would help us be visible to each other? Or perhaps even our own Enjin site, if people would prefer that. Should European-inclusive FCs and Linkshells form some sort of co-operative alliance? Perhaps an option to filter the linkshells page by timezone / region would be helpful. In short, there's loads of options open to us if we want to make Balmung a better home for EU RPers. I'd love to work with you all to make this happen, if the desire and will is there!
  14. A fellow Brit. Allo mate. Welcome to Balmung, and to the RPC! I hope to see you around Eorzea sometime.
  15. Here's the official answer from SE's lore team on breeding between the five races. Tl;dr: It is possible, and does happen. It is rare, however, due to 'cultural differences'. So what can we draw from that? It seems that while the 5 races coexist amicably in Eorzea due to their mutual dependency and the trials they've endured together, each of the races maintains the uniqueness of their own racial culture enough that pairing with their own race is very strongly preferred. This is interesting, given how long the races have shared Eorzea by this point. Eorzeans seem to show a greater resistance to the kind of cultural 'bleeding' and blending we witness on earth when disparate groups come to live together over time. Perhaps Eorzeans are simply a proud lot, who value their racial heritage enough to make efforts to protect it. This can clearly be seen in the Sea Wolf Roegadyn, who still name their children using the old tongue, despite the fact that these names are often difficult for the other races to pronounce. In my head canon, Highlander Hyur (Ala Mhigans in particular) are similarly proud regarding their heritage. Or perhaps it is partly because there are significant psychological differences between the races that the desire is not often there, or which makes interracial pairings difficult. At this point, it's tricky to say. But SE has stated that we'll see more lore regarding this at some point in the future, so we can look forward to seeing that. So the long and short of the issue is; given what SE has said regarding interracial breeding in Eorzea, it's reasonable to make a half-breed character. Also, while Eorzeans are typically a tolerant bunch, given how rare half-breeds are, it's up to you whether your half-breed character would face prejudice regarding their background. Other considerations include what Roswyn has already mentioned; the significant physical differences between some of the races make certain combinations... Improbable, at least until SE says otherwise.
  16. Well, what timing! Aeon is currently exploring avenues to connect with other FCs, too. We're a small FC and a bit of a motley crew, who masquerade ICly as a run-of-the-mill adventurers' company. Let's see if we can't brainstorm some awesomeness together. [Edit] Oh, and this offer extends to other FCs, too. If you're in need of adventurers-for-hire or can see another plot we can brew up, let me know!
  17. So does that mean you're accepting Miqo'te characters? It does indeed!
  18. Recruitment has been opened for all applicants for as long as it takes us to fill our recruitment spots (5) for this round. Applications from all are welcome!
  19. Just point me at the collections box, I'll help.
  20. I suggest Balmung. It's the biggest RP server, and like Warren said, we have quite a few FCs that are either EU based, or who are active at EU times. I don't think transfers are an issue, but to make a new character on Balmung you'll have to keep checking at low traffic hours. Friends and I have usually managed to make new characters on Balmung during early morning EST, about 6/7AM.
