The IC/OOC boundary and how to approach it the SMILE way
Nebbs replied to g0ne's topic in RP Discussion
We have no more responsibility for our character's actions than an actor playing a character, or a writer writing a character's part. Yes what Aya says. If you play an obnoxious character and push it to cause problems, or try to break other characters up.. then say it is not you it is the character.. no dice. From another angle, RP is a cooperative endeavour in which we are all essentially co-authoring a shared story in real time. This is more about intent and responsibility to be a positive part of the shared story. And that can equally be a baddie as a goody character and action. -
The IC/OOC boundary and how to approach it the SMILE way

I disagree. Certain things need to be kept separate -- one thing that I have seen happen too often is when two characters fall in love icly. Now, it's fine if both of the players are romantically involved, too, but sometimes one of the players starts liking the other player, but that feeling isn't returned. OOC stalking ensues, kills the rp, and leaves the player being stalked feeling unsafe and harassed. Another thing is two characters have a disagreement, or a character does something really bad. The other characters start to dislike that character. OOCly, the players start to dislike the player of the bad character. That player then becomes an outcast in the community, despite the fact that the player is nothing like the character. Last one: Something bad happens to a character. The player of that character takes the pain the character is going through and internalizes it until it gets to the point that the player is depressed with everyday actions, and the angst begins to affect the player's life. These are a little extreme, yes, but they can and have happened before and clearly show that there should be a line between the characters and what they are doing, and the players' lives. Yes, you're right that there will be some bleed-through, because we are the ones in control -- but there is a line that should not be crossed. We are not our characters, and we do not live in the world our characters live in. That must be acknowledged at all times. We are playing pretend in a way that lets us have fun and experience occasional catharsis, nothing more. I think you describe just normal interaction, RP as an activity may loosen some of the normal constraints but such trouble is not limited to the RP community. I have tried many approaches, but I am left feeling that people's feelings are not bound by rules and their "self" will come through in the end. Everyone is flawed, so expect trouble. Take guilds for example, they filter applications so that they narrow the people to a "type", even then every guild I have been in has troubles. People cause the troubles not the characters. My own approach is to be "casual" and not take it too seriously (I take RP seriously and prefer 100% IC, I hate OOC attempts to fix the outcome). On the few occasions I have gotten close to people due to great RP that leads to OOC friendship, it dies in the end. But then at my age that sometimes takes a long time and in some cases decades. The RP friends that I have that have persisted are those that I have a relaxed interaction with rather than any intense RP. Maybe I am agreeing with you, and that deep involved RP goes too deep, and it is best to keep it more superficial with some hard separation. (or maybe that is not what you are saying?) And.. to add.. if people do want to cross some conceptual line and not keep it separate.. I wish them luck. If it is consensual then I'd back it. But then I dislike imposed rules and stereotyping people. -
Do you have those 1st shots of meeting that person? Where it all began - Spot the difference. This is the first shot I have of the two love-birds. Ilwe hair (on the toon) has the black ears (though he still has these IC) Nebbs with short heir and no stripe

Off the wall but.. There is only OOC? We decide what our characters do, no one else. We are not playing a part that someone else has written, we are responding to what is happening in a scene and then translating that to actions of a character. So while there may be separation of context, there is no separation of responsibility. Now we are all flawed and have different norms, so friction will occur. If that is spoiling the enjoyment and can't be resolved IC, you need to talk OOC. Though even then, just because it is OOC does not mean things will be nice and smooth. People sometimes get along and sometimes they don't... that's just Life. -

We are full at the moment but I will put you all on the watch list. There is no priority, it just means we can keep an eye out when slots open up.

All good stuff, I would caution that things are seldom clear cut and you should look for ways to be resiliant when it does go wrong. But just to add another dimention. In more longer term RP you can find an OOC friendship. This brings its own joy and issues, and as that friendship grew out of RP it can be a little mixed up. The important thing is to understand that your friend is a person, and not their toon (and yourself also). Hard to do when the RP is emotional as that by passes rational reason. Sometime the person not the toon needs a hug, sometimes they need to be alone... you now have an ooc friendship, not RP. As for myself I supose I have faild or been the victim at most aspects of online RP over too many years. Some lessons I learn, some I struggle with. I even mess up a bit every day. -
Well after healer fear from WoD but I also want Bard. So running as healer so far I snagged legs (need) for healer and legs (greed) for bard. If you just want one piece it could take ages, so for keeping calm I can recommend widening your shopping list.

I love the impromptu RP made up on the fly and have many instances of that. You know you bump into someone start chatting and for the next two hours find yourself on some adventure.

More I supose wishes to myself to sort mysrlf out. Help Others - I love doing this, and have gear and skilz and patiance. That is help and not carry people. Role Play - I really want to do more interactive stuff but I feel the stuff I try fails and there is always something in the way... I know I can fix this myself. PvE - T8 and FCoB, and a nice Shiva farming experience CT/ST/WoD Static - could be fun to get a group to burn this weekly on Tuesdays PvP - I need more levels so I can wear the gear so maybe a maelstrom group is out there? Crafting/Gathering - I suppose just pimping out a bit. I can get mats and even know crafter's but I don't like asking for help. I think maybe a small house, I haz funds but am unsure it would work. I have not even made use of my FC room. So a pipe dream.

So I (the Tank) went DF for Roulette High, got Haukke HM. Now this is an easy thing to run through, the party looks well geared, I just need protect and... hang on where is the WHM going? Yes, he ran of ahead to pull the mobs and holy them. I waited a while then took them off him. He then proceeded to do the same in the next room. I left, exit stage right. I do wonder what people say when I leave... it is never anything good when others leave a party I'm in. -

Don't stand in the fire! It's a basic of just about every fight, un every game. For the first time in a long time I left a party (as Tank) because the healer kept standing in fire, they also were always in cleric stance and never stoneskined anyone. 4 wipes on Copperbell HM 1st Boss, the rest of the party managed to understand by try 3 to kill the flamebombe but the healer.. omg. Also it was 15mins to maintenance. Hi, I'm Nebula and I bailed on a party.. I need help. -

Wait for 5 sunders! Seriously yes, help your tank by: Don't put heal over time on the tank before the pull Wait for the tank to finish the pull, some of the longer ones involve running Waiting for him to establish aggro Then watch your aggro, you can back off or switch targets If you get aggro.. go to the tank, he will have a better chance to get it off you and not loose aggro on other mobs while doing so But nobody is perfect, so also allow for your tank to just be okay. -

I feel for all the new people, and I love it when i get a group of such people. It makes for a great experience to chat, learn and have some fun. Honestly give me people that interact over "just here for the win" folks, and keep the nutters well away. -

Burn the Boss and ignore adds, aoe and mechanics is a dumb way to approach stuff! There I said it. In fact there are a few "not so hard" boss encounters that will serve you your ass with this approach. I much prefer to do the dance than run through the ballroom and pretend it's dancing.
